Almost every child,on the first day he sets foot in a school building,is smarter, more26less afraid of what he doesn’t know, better at finding and27, more confident, resourceful(机敏的),persistent and28than he will ever be again in his schooling–or,unless he is very unusual and very lucky, for the rest of his life.Already,by paying close attention to and29the world and people around

him,and without any school-type formal instruction,he has done a task far more difficult, complicated and30than anything he will be asked to do in school,or than any of his teachers has done for years. He has solved the31of language. He has discovered it–babies don’t even know that language exists–and he has found out how it works and learned to use it32.He has done it by exploring,by experimenting, by developing his own model of the grammar of language,by33and seeing whether it works,by gradually changing it and34it until it does work. And while he has been doing this,he has been learning other things as well, including many of the―35‖that the schools think only they can teach him,and many that are more complicated than the ones they do try to teach him.

Universities Branch Out

A)As never before in their long history, universities have become instruments of

national competition as well as instruments of peace. They are the place of the scientific discoveries that move economies forward, and the primary means of educating the talent required to obtain and maintain competitive advantage. But at the same time, the opening of national borders to the flow of goods, services, information and especially people has made universities a powerful force for global integration, mutual understanding and geopolitical stability.

B)In response to the same forces that have driven the world economy, universities

have become more self-consciously global:seeking students from around the world who represent the entire range of cultures and values, sending their own students abroad to prepare them for global careers, offering courses of study that address the challenges of an interconnected world and collaborative(合作的) research programs to advance science for the benefit of all humanity.

C)Of the forces shaping higher education none is more sweeping than the movement

across borders.Over the past three decades the number of students leaving home each year to study abroad has grown at an annual rate of3.9percent,from 800,000in1975to2.5million in2004.Most travel from one developed nation to another, but the flow from developing to developed countries is growing rapidly.

The reverse flow, from developed to developing countries,is on the rise, too.

Today foreign students earn30percent of the doctoral degrees awarded in the United States and38percent of those in the United Kingdom. And the number crossing borders for undergraduate study is growing as well,to8percent of the undergraduates at America’s best institutions and10percent of all undergraduates in the U.K.In the United States,20percent of the newly hired professors in science and engineering are foreign-born,and in China many newly hired faculty

members at the top research universities received their graduate education abroad.

D)Universities are also encouraging students to spend some of their undergraduate

years in another country. In Europe, more than140,000students participate in the Erasmus program each year, taking courses for credit in one of2,200participating institutions across the continent. And in the United States, institutions are helping place students in summer internships(实习)abroad to prepare them for global careers.Y ale and Harvard have led the way, offering every undergraduate at least one international study or internship opportunity—and providing the financial resources to make it possible.

E)Globalization is also reshaping the way research is done. One new trend involves

sourcing portions of a research program to another country.Y ale professor and Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator Tian Xu directs a research center focused on the genetics of human disease at Shanghai’s Fudan University,in collaboration with faculty colleagues from both schools. The Shanghai center has 95employees and graduate students working in a4,300-square-meter laboratory facility.Y ale faculty, postdoctors and graduate students visit regularly and attend videoconference seminars with scientists from both campuses. The arrangement benefits both countries;Xu’s Y ale lab is more productive, thanks to the lower costs of conducting research in China, and Chinese graduate students, postdoctors and faculty get on-the-job training from a world-class scientist and his U.S.team.

F)As a result of its strength in science, the United States has consistently led the

world in the commercialization of major new technologies, from the mainframe computer and the integrated circuit of the1960s to the Internet infrastructure(基础设施)and applications software of the1990s.The link between university-based science and industrial application is often indirect but sometimes highly visible:Silicon V alley was intentionally created by Stanford University, and Route128outside Boston has long housed companies spun off from MIT and Harvard.Around the world, governments have encouraged copying of this model, perhaps most successfully in Cambridge,England, where Microsoft and scores of other leading software and biotechnology companies have set up shop around the university.

G)For all its success, the United States remains deeply hesitant about sustaining the

research-university model. Most politicians recognize the link between investment in science and national economic strength, but support for research funding has been unsteady. The budget of the National Institutes of Health doubled between1998and2003,but has risen more slowly than inflation since then.Support for the physical sciences and engineering barely kept pace with inflation during that same period. The attempt to make up lost ground is welcome, but the nation would be better served by steady, predictable increases in science funding at the rate of long-term GDP growth, which is on the order of inflation plus3percent per year.

H)American politicians have great difficulty recognizing that admitting more foreign

students can greatly promote the national interest by increasing international

understanding.Adjusted for inflation, public funding for international exchanges and foreign-language study is well below the levels of40years ago.In the wake of September11,changes in the visa process caused a dramatic decline in the number of foreign students seeking admission to U.S.universities,and a corresponding surge in enrollments in Australia,Singapore and the U.K.

Objections from American university and business leaders led to improvements in the process and a reversal of the decline, but the United States is still seen by many as unwelcoming to international students.

I)Most Americans recognize that universities contribute to the nation’s well-being

through their scientific research, but many fear that foreign students threaten American competitiveness by taking their knowledge and skills back home. They fail to grasp that welcoming foreign students to the United States has two important positive effects:first, the very best of them stay in the States and—like immigrants throughout history—strengthen the nation;and second, foreign students who study in the United States become ambassadors for many of its most cherished(珍视)values when they return home.Or at least they understand them better. In America as elsewhere, few instruments of foreign policy are as effective in promoting peace and stability as welcoming international university students.

Section C

Directions:There are2passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four

choices marked A),B),C)and D).You should decide on the best choice

and mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet2with a single

line through the centre.

Passage One

Questions56to60are based on the following passage.

Global warming is causing more than300,000deaths and about$125billion in economic losses each year, according to a report by the Global Humanitarian Forum, an organization led by Kofi Annan, the former United Nations secretary general.

The report,to be released Friday, analyzed data and existing studies of health, disaster, population and economic trends. It found that human-influenced climate change was raising the global death rates from illnesses including malnutrition(营养不良)and heat-related health problems.

But even before its release, the report drew criticism from some experts on climate and risk, who questioned its methods and conclusions.

Along with the deaths, the report said that the lives of325million people, primarily in poor countries, were being seriously affected by climate change. It projected that the number would double by2030.

Roger Pielke Jr.,a political scientist at the University of Colorado,Boulder, who studies disaster trends, said the Forum’s report was―a methodological embarrassment‖because there was no way to distinguish deaths or economic losses related to human-driven global warming amid the much larger losses resulting from the growth in populations and economic development in vulnerable(易受伤害的) regions.Dr.Pielke said that―climate change is an important problem requiring our utmost attention.‖But the report,he said,―will harm the cause for action on both climate change and disasters because it is so deeply flawed(有瑕疵的).‖However,Soren Andreasen,a social scientist at Dalberg Global Development Partners who supervised the writing of the report, defended it,saying that it was clear that the numbers were rough estimates. He said the report was aimed at world leaders, who will meet in Copenhagen in December to negotiate a new international climate treaty.

In a press release describing the report,Mr.Annan stressed the need for the negotiations to focus on increasing the flow of money from rich to poor regions to help reduce their vulnerability to climate hazards while still curbing the emissions of the heat-trapping gases.More than90%of the human and economic losses from climate change are occurring in poor countries, according to the report.

Questions61to65are based on the following passage.

It’s an annual argument.Do we or do we not go on holiday? My partner says no because the boiler could go,or the roof fall off,and we have no savings to save us.I say you only live once and we work hard and wh at’s the point if you can’t go on holiday. The joy of a recession means no argument next year–we just won’t go.

Since money is known to be one of the things most likely to bring a relationship to its knees,we should be grateful. For many families the recession means more than not booking a holiday.A Y ouGov poll of2,000people found22%said they were arguing more with their partners because of concerns about money. What’s less clear is whether divorce and separation rates rise in a recession–financial pressures mean couples argue more but make splitting up less affordable.A recent research shows arguments about money were especially damaging to couples.Disputes were characterised by intense verbal(言语上的)aggression, tended to be repeated and not

resolved,and made men,more than women,extremely angry.

Kim Stephenson,an occupational psychologist, believes money is such a big deal because of what it symbolises, which may be different things to men and women.―People can say the same things about money but have different ideas of what it’s for,‖he explains.―They’ll say it’s to save,to spend, for security, for freedom,to show someone you love them.‖He says men are more likely to see money as a way of buying status and of showing their parents that they’ve achieved something.

―The biggest problem is that couples assume each other knows what’s going on with their finances, but they don’t.There seems to be more of a taboo(禁忌)about talking about money than about death. But you both need to know what you’re doing, who’s paying what into the joint account and how much you keep separately. In a healthy relationship, you don’t have to agree about money, but you have to talk about it.‖

be asked about what was said. Both the conversation and the questions

will be spoken only once. After each question there will be a pause.

During the pause, you must read the four choices marked A),B),C)and

D),and decide which is the best answer. Then mark the corresponding

letter on Answer Sheet1with a single line through the centre.

1.M:Finally I’ve got the chance to put on my new suit tonight.I hope to make a good impression on your family.

W:Come on,it’s only a family reunion.So jeans and T-shirts are just fine.

Q:What does the woman mean?

2.W:From here, the mountains look as if you could just reach out and touch them. M:That’s why I chose this lodge. It has one of the best views in Switzerland.

Q:What is the man’s chief consideration in choosing the lodge?

3.M:Miss,can I interest you in the pork special we’re serving tonight? It’s only $7.99,half the usual price, and it’s very tasty.

W:Oh,really?I’ll try it.

Q:What does the man say about the dish?

4.W:This crazy bus schedule has got me completely confused.I can’t figure out when my bus to Cleveland leaves.

M:Why don’t you just go to the ticket window and ask?

Q:What does the man suggest the woman do?

5.M:Shawn’s been trying for months to find a job.But I wonder how he could get a job when he looks like that.

W:Oh,that poor guy!He really should shave himself every other day at least and put on something clean.

Q:What do we learn about Shawn?

6.M:Why didn’t you stop when we first signaled you at the crossroads?

W:Sorry,I was just a bit absent-minded.Anyway,do I have to pay a fine?

Q:What do we learn from the conversation?

7.W:My hand still hurts from the fall on the ice yesterday.I wonder if I broke something.

M:I’m no doctor, but it’s not black and blue or anything.Maybe you just need to rest it for a few days.

W:I’m sorry you feel that way,but my mother insists that he come.

Q:What does the woman imply?

Conversation One

M:Hello,Professor Johnson.

W:Hello,Tony. So what shall we work on today?

M:Well, the problem is that this writing assignment isn’t coming out right. What I thought I was writing on was to talk about what a particular sport means to me—one I participate in.

W:What sport did you choose?

M:I decided to write about cross-country skiing.

W:What are you going to say about skiing?

M:That’s the problem.I thought I would write about how peaceful it is to be out in the country.

W:So why is that a problem?

M:As I start describing how quiet it is to be out in the woods,I keep mentioning how much effort it takes to keep going.Cross-country skiing isn’t as easy as some people think. It takes a lot of energy. But that’s not part of my paper,so I guess I should leave it out.But now I don’t know how to explain that feeling of peacefulness without explaining how hard you have to work for it.It all fits together. It’s not like just sitting down somewhere and watching the clouds roll by.That’s different.

W:Then you’ll have to include that in your point. The peacefulness of cross-country skiing is the kind you earn by effort. Why leave that out?Part of your point you knew beforehand, but part you discovered as you wrote. That’s common, right?

M:Y eah,I guess so…

Questions9to11are based on the conversation you have just heard.

9.What is the topic of the man’s writing assignment?

10.What problem does the man have while working on his paper?

Conversation Two

W:Good evening, and welcome to this week’s―Business World,‖the program for and about businesspeople.Tonight we have Mr.Steven Kane who has just taken over an established bicycle shop.Tell us,Mr.Kane, what made you want to run your own store?

M:Well,I’ve always loved racing bikes and fixing them. When I was working full-time as a salesman for a big company,I seldom had time to enjoy my hobby.I knew then that as soon as I had enough money to get my own business going,I’d do it.I had my heart set on it,and I didn’t let anything stand in my way. When I went

down to the bank and got a business loan,I knew I’d love being my own boss. Now my time is my own.I open the store when I want and leave when I want.

W:Y ou mean you don’t keep regular hours?

M:Well, the sign on my store says the hours are10:00to6:00,but if business is slower than usual,I can just lock up and take off early.

W:Have you hired any employees to work with you yet?

M:Y eah,a couple of friends of mine who love biking as much as I do.They help me out a few days a week. It’s great because…we play cards or just sit around and talk when there’re no customers.

W:Thank you,Mr.Kane.W e wish you success in your new business.

Questions12to15are based on the conversation you have just heard.

12.What is the woman doing?

Passage One

I first met Joe Gans when we were both nine years old, which is probably the only reason he’s one of my best friends. If I had first met Joe as a freshman in high school,we wouldn’t even have had the chance to get to know each other.Joe is a day student, but I am a boarding student.W e haven’t been in the same classes, sports,or extracurricular activities.

Nonetheless,I spend nearly every weekend at his house and we talk on the phone every night. This is not to say that we would not have been compatible if we had first met in our freshman year.Rather,we would not have been likely to spend enough time getting to know each other due to the lack of immediately visible mutual interests. In fact,to be honest,I struggle even now to think of things we have in common. But maybe that’s what makes us enjoy each other’s company so much.

When I look at my friendship with Joe,I wonder how many people I’ve known whom I never disliked, but simply didn’t take the time to get to know. Thanks to Joe, I have realized how little basis there is for the social divisions that exist in every community.Since this realization,I have begun to make an even more determined effort to find friends in unexpected people and places.

Questions16to18are based on the passage you have just heard.

16.Why does the speaker say Joe Gans became one of his best friends?

17.Where does the speaker spend most of his weekends?

18.What has the speaker learned from his friendship with Joe?

Passage Two

While Gail Opp-Kemp,an American artist, was giving a speech on the art of Japanese brush painting to an audience that included visitors from Japan, she was confused to see that many of her Japanese listeners had their eyes closed. Were they turned off because an American had the nerve to instruct Japanese in their own art form? Were they deliberately trying to signal their rejection of her?

Opp-Kemp later found out that her listeners were not being disrespectful. Japanese listeners sometimes close their eyes to enhance concentration. Her listeners were showing their respect for her by chewing on her words.

Someday you may be either a speaker or a listener in a situation involving people from other countries or members of a minority group in North America.Learning how different cultures signal respect can help you avoid misunderstandings. Here are some examples:

In the deaf culture of North America, many listeners show applause not by clapping their hands but by waving them in the air.

In some cultures, both overseas and in some minority groups in North America, listeners are considered disrespectful if they look directly at the speaker.Respect is shown by looking in the general direction but avoiding direct eye contact.

In some countries, whistling by listeners is a sign of approval, while in other countries,it is a form of insult.

Questions19to21are based on the passage you have just heard.

19.What did Opp-Kemp’s speech focus on?

20.Why do Japanese listeners sometimes close their eyes while listening to a speech?

21.What does the speaker try to explain?

Passage Three

One of the greatest heartbreaks for firefighters occurs when they fail to rescue a child from a burning building because the child—frightened by smoke and noise—hides under a bed or in a closet and is later found dead.

Saddest of all is when children catch a glimpse of the masked firefighter but hide because they think they have seen a monster.

To prevent such tragedies, firefighter Eric V elez gives talks to children in his community, explaining that they should never hide during a fire.He displays firefighters’equipment, including the oxygen mask, which he encourages his listeners to play with and put on.―If you see us,‖V elez tells them,―don’t hide.W e are not monsters.W e have come to rescue you.‖

V elez gives his presentations in English and Spanish.Growing up in San

Francisco,he learned Spanish from his immigrant parents.

V elez—and other firefighters throughout North America who give similar presentations—will never know how many lives they save through their talks, but it’s a fact that informative speaking saves lives. For example, several months after listening to an informative speech,Pete Gentry in North Carolina rescued his brother, who was choking on food,by using the method taught by student speaker Julie Parris.

In addition to saving lives, informative speakers help people learn new skills, solve problems, and acquire fascinating facts about the exciting world in which they live.

Questions22to25are based on the passage you have just heard.

22.Why do some children trapped in a burning building hide from masked firefighters?

23.What does the passage tell us about firefighter Eric V elez?

24.What do we learn about Pete Gentry?

25.What message is the speaker trying to convey?

英语四级复习大全 第一章听力理解 第一节听力题型改革概述 听力比例由原来的20%提升到35%:短对话部分由原来的10题减至8题;增加两篇长对话,题量在3至4题每篇,一共7题;短文(俗称“段子题”)仍为3篇,题量在3至4题每篇,一共10题;复合式听写保持不变。以上4个听力部分中,短对话和长对话的分值一共占15%,而短文和复合式听写的分值一共占20%。听力题材涉及的范围更加广泛,形式灵活多样,包括对话、讲座、广播电视节目等等。 第二节听力题型概述及应试策略 一、关于对话题 (一) 长短对话听力题改革与分析 1. 听力短对话部分虽然由原先的10题改为8题,但就其题目特点与解题思路而言与以往的老题型没有太大的差异。这些题目一如既往地贯彻了以往的几大常见考点: ·转折引起的作者态度及谈论重点的变化; ·对现象原因的阐述与补充; ·反问句式、反意疑问句式的考察:反问和反意疑问在四级考试中永远以一种无疑而问的形式出现,这次依然用了这样的一个形式。因此,只要能很好把握其“无疑而问”的特点,就能方便解题。当然也应该注意到,反问句往往作为加强语气的建议句型出现的这一考点。 ·建议句型的考察:建议句型往往是比较复杂的考点之一,因为句型相对比较多,而且隐蔽性比较强。 ·场景、人物关系的推测; ·语音语调的考察。 综上所述,试点考试将依然遵循以往的考试规律和特点,一脉相承。但所谓的短对话却也越来越长,这也体现了现在考试在句型句式、言外之意和内容复杂化三个方面的发展趋势。 2. 听力长对话并不可怕,它结合了短对话对问答句式,建议请求,和关键场景赐予的考察和长段子对文章层次和理解能力的要求。所以做这样的题目往往需要具备综合的素质,既要注意其中的细节,又要注意整体的把握,还要能够应付7道题目的题量,这比以往的四级题目对综合能力的要求显著提高了。 (二) 长短对话听力技巧 应注意以下几点: 1. 提前阅读选项,判断问题所属,从而集中精力于有关信息。 2. 注意根据信息词汇判断地点和说话人的身份职业等。 当同学们看到四个地点和职业名词时,大脑中就应该马上出现与这些地点或职业相关的一系列词语,在听的过程中注意提到了什么信息词语,这样就可轻松地判断谈话发生的地点,说话人的职业或身份,以及谈话双方的关系。 为此,同学们有必要了解与各种职业和地点行业有关的信息词汇,如: 饭店:menu, order, waitress, waiter, take order, go Dutch, It's my treat等;

Another distinction between science and technology has to do with the progr ess in each. Progress in science excludes the human factor. Scientists, who seek to comp rehend the universe and know the truth within the highest degree of accuracy an d certainty, cannot pay attention to their own or other people's likes or disli kes or to popular ideas about the fitness of things.

首先要注意听表示转折关系的词汇,例如but、however、unfortunately、unexpectedly、to tell the truth等。 在对话题中,往往会有一些表示建议或劝告的句子,例如“Why…?”“Why not…?”“Why don’t you/we…?”“It would be better to do...”“Wouldn’t it be better to do…?”

As a manager, Tiffany is responsible for interviewing applicants for some of the positions with her company .During one interview, she noticed that the candidate never made direct eye contact. She was puzzled and somewhat disappointed because she liked the individual otherwise. He had a perfect resume and gave good responses to her questions, but the fact that he never looked her in the eye said “untrustworthy,” so she decided to offer the job to her second choice. “It wasn’t until I attended a diversity workshop that I realized the person we passed over was the perfect person,” Tiffany confesses. What she hadn’t known at the time of the interview was that the candidate’s “different” behavior was simply a cultural misunderstanding . He was an Asian-American raised in a household where respect for those in authority was shown by averting(避开) your eyes. “I was just thrown off by the lack of ye contact; not realizing it was cultural,” Tiffany says. “I missed out ,but will not miss that opportunity again.” Many of us have had similar encounters with behaviors we perceive as different. As the world becomes smaller and our workplaces more diverse, it is becoming essential to expand our under-standing of others and to reexamine some of our false assumptions .

As never before in their long history, universities have become instruments of national competition as well as instruments of peace. Colleges taking another look at value of merit-based aid Good grades and high tests scores still matter—a lot—to many colleges as they award financial aid. But with low-income students projected to make up an ever-larger share of the college-bound population in coming years, some schools are re-examining whether that aid, typically known as “merit aid”, is the most effective use of precious institutional dollars. George Washington University in Washington, D.C., for example, said last week that it would cut the value of its average merit scholarships by about one-third and reduce the number of recipients(接受者), pouring the savings, about $2.5 million, into need-based aid. Allegheny College in Meadville, Pa., made a similar decision three years ago. Now, Hamilton College in Clinton, N.Y., says it will phase out merit scholarships altogether. No current merit-aid recipients will lose their scholarships, but need-based aid alone will be awarded beginning with students entering in fall 2008. Not all colleges offer merit aid; generally, the more selective a school, the less likely it is to do so. Harvard and Princeton, for example, offer generous need-based packages, but many families who don’t meet need eligibility(资格)have been willing to pay whatever they must for a big-name school. For small regional colleges that struggle just to fill seats, merit aid can be an important revenue-builder because many recipients still pay enough tuition dollars over and above the scholarship amount to keep the institution running. But for rankings-conscious schools in between, merit aid has served primarily as a tool to recruit top students and to improve their academic profits. “They’re trying to buy students,”says Skidmore College economist Sandy Baum. Studies show merit aid also tends to benefit disproportionately students who could afford to enroll without it. “As we look to the future, we see a more pressing need to invest in need-based aid,”says Monica Inzer, dean of admission and financial aid at Hamilton, which has offered merit scholarships for 10 years. During that time, it rose in US News & World Repor t’s ranking of the best liberal arts colleges, from 25 to 17. Merit aid, which benefited about 75 students a year, or about 4% of its student body, at a cost of about $ 1 million a year, “served us well,”Inzer says, but “to be
