Apple除了一般我们都知道的意思,例如:“An apple a day keeps the doctor away .”(一日一苹果,医生远离我。)

1、the app le of sb’s eye

亦作the apple of the eye,意为“为人钟爱的人或物(a person who is most dear to the person specified)”。 (Psalms,17,8)》:“Keep me as the apple

of the eye, hide me under the shadow of thy wings”。

[例句]His daughter is the apple of his eye.

2、Adam’s apple

[例句]I find that your Adam’s apple isn’t apparent.

3、apple of discord

由此,人们就用apple of discord来喻指“祸根;争端(cause of contention)”。

[例句]The use of the car was an apple of discord between Joe and his wife.

4、apple of love

[例句]Hey, don’t touch that bike, it’s my apple of love.

5、apple of Sodom

[例句]The sofa he bought yesterday was found to be an apple of Sodom.

6、apple-pie order

[例句]Before her guests arrived, the hostess had put her house in apple?

7、apple-polisher

[例句]John is such an apple-polisher —he always agrees with whatever the boss says.

8、upset the apple-cart

[例句]Tom really upset the apple cart by telling Mary the truth about Jane.

Stew in one’s own juice

A young man knew an old woman in the bridewell. He knew the old woman’s daughter later and captivated her. Then the girl asked him to lend her twenty thousand yuan to buy a house. The man intended to make up to her through lending the money. The girl didn’t want to marry the man or return the money. So she contrived to cheat the man. She asked the man to pay her one hundred and fifty thousand yuan as the money fo r betrothal gifts. She thought the man couldn’t afford to pay that much money and gave up the marriage. However, the man was of fortitude and tranced. He even paid the money without hesitation though his family was not rich. As an upshot, the girl had to marry him. She thought he was a crank and a little bit cocky. She had to look for a chance to divorce him because she was a go-getter to do so. The man was really a landlubber who was holocausted by a skilled swimmer. The man once hit the girl one month after their marriage, which was what the girl wanted. She immediately interposed her demand to divorce him. The man was shocked

and at once deified the girl. He didn’t know the girl’s idea. She would divorce him sooner or later.

点),a Herculean task(艰巨的任务),between Sylla and Charybdis(腹背受敌,进退两难)。 《伊索寓言》中很多故事是家喻户晓的,例如:sour grapes(酸葡萄,指把得不到的东西说成不好的,聊以自慰),the last straw(终于使人不能忍受的最后一击),to cry wolf too o ften(假话说得太多,以至于说真话时别人也不信),to nourish a viper in one’s bosom(对坏人仁慈),borrowed plums(靠他人得来的声望)。英语和法语有很多共有的成语:to bell the cat(做众人都不愿做的危险事),to throw down the gloves(挑战),to take he bull by the horn(不畏艰险),o n the carpet( 受训斥),to read between the lines(体会字里行间的言外之意),to kill time (消磨时间)。 Rome was not built in a day.(伟业非一日之功),All roads lead to Rome.(条条大路通罗马),等等。

例如:the apple of one’s ey e(掌上明珠),beat the air(徒劳),cast pearls before swine(对牛弹琴),writing on the wall(灾祸的征兆),等等。莎士比亚是英国文艺复兴时期伟大的戏剧家和诗人,他的作品语言生动活泼、优美精炼,有很多英语习语就源于其中,例如:enough to make the angels weep(足以使天使落泪,现指愚蠢得使人丧失信心和希望),paint the lily现在多作gild the lily(画蛇添足),applaud one to the echo(大声喝彩、掌声雷动),to the heart’s content(尽情地),to give the devil its due(公平对待,平心而论)。

英国是一个岛国,位于欧洲西部大西洋中的不列颠岛上,有很长的海岸线,千百年来英国的航海业和渔业十分发达,因此产生了很多与航海业有关的习语,例如:all hands to the pumps(情况危急时全力以赴),all at sea(不知所措),raise the wind(筹钱);英国渔业资源丰富,所以英语语言中也有不少习语都打上了渔业的烙印,比如说:to drink like a fish(牛饮),to have other fish to fry(有另外一件更重要的事情去做),a big fish in a small pond(在小范围内出名的人),alive and kickin g(活蹦乱跳),Never offer to teach fish to swim.

比如:to put something in apple-pie order(把某事、物弄得井井有条),as easy as pie (非常容易),mother’s milk(生来就喜欢的东西),butter up(过分恭维,拍马屁),等等。

英国人酷爱狩猎,因此有很多习语来源于此,比如:to run with the hare and hunt with the hounds(两面讨好),to throw off scent(使某人无法跟踪),等等;打扑克牌也是英国人钟爱的娱乐项目,to show one’s card(摊牌),to stack the card(暗地里布局舞弊),to turn the table(转变形式,转败为胜),to turn up trumps (出人意料地令人满意),由此可见风俗习惯对英语习语的影响之深。

Every dog has its day.(每个人都有得意的时候。)Love me,love my dog.(爱屋及乌),a lucky dog(幸运的人),to be top dog(处于支配地位),a dog in the manger(占着马槽的狗——比喻不让别人享受他自己不能用来享受的东西的人),to teach old dogs new tricks (教老年人学新技能,让守旧的人接受新事物)。cat也是英语习语中出现频率比较高的动物,例如let the c at out of the bag(泄露秘密),cat’s paw (受人愚弄被人利用的人)。 ,to eat like a bird常用来形容某人吃得少;eleph ant 有时也在习语中出现,如a white elephant (漂亮而又不实用的东西)。

By hook or by crook

I'll get the work finished in this week by hook or by crook.

By hook or by crook, I mean to have control of that business.

1.Like attracts(或draws)like. (like 指similar people)这与另一句谬语「Birds of a feather flock together.」(相同羽毛的鸟在一起)意义相似。 2.(Too much) familiarity breeds contempt. 3.Once bitten(或bit),twice shy. When you have bad experience, you don't want to have the same experience again. 这不就是「一朝被蛇咬,见绳也心惊」或「一日被蛇咬,十年怕草绳」吗? 4.A stitch in time save nine. 这句警语与「An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.」(一分的预防,胜於十分的治疗)意义相近。此外,还有:「Don't wait for a rainy day to fix the roof.(不要等到下雨时才去修补屋顶); 或「Always prepare for a rainy day.」或「Prepare for the worst and hope for the best.」(做最坏的打算和最好的希望)这些警语,说的都是「未雨绸缪」。 5.Old habits die hard. 「It is difficult to break an old habit.」这与另一句谚语:「You can not teach an old dog new tricks.」(你不能教老狗新把戏)。 6.Absence makes the heart grow fonder. 「When a person is absent, we may think of him/her more often.」 7.A penny saved is a penny earned. Take care of your pennies(=pence)and the pounds (=dollars)will take care of themselves. If you save small amount of money, you will eventually have a large sum of money. 8.When in Rome, do as the Romans do.

Part One I had only recently seen John in a restaurant. The news of his death came as a bolt from the blue She found the keys she had lost last month, which was like a bolt from the blue A bolt from the blue Meaning:A complete surprise, like a bolt of lightning from a blue sky.
