7)stresses.They have to work extra hours to make more money to support their families. It would be wise for us to be 8)aware of the importance of fathers to their children. It would also be advisable for us to recognize the great efforts that fathers make to support their families. They , the unsung heroes, 9)deserve our recognize and our thanks for what they do.

There is no doubt that the heartfelt love a natural man has for the young.It is the natural paternal affection shared by all animals. But the passion

for the old needs to be taught by culture. Therefore, a natural man loves his children , but a culture man loves his parents.

In the matter of the attitudes toward old age, there is an absolute difference between the West and the East. Old American try to “postpone”the much feared old age. Thy always tell others they are young and wish to leave the impression they are busy and active. However, a saying that “the older you are , the more vigorous you are ”is a nice compliment for the elderly of great vitality in China. This is understandable if one learns about the desire of the Chinese to enjoy good health in their old age. Besides, the West and the East take opposite points of view on children’s care fore the elderly. Elderly parents in China are honored to be taken care of by their children. One is believed to commit a moral sin if he fails to feed his aged parents. On the contrary, elderly parents in America are ashamed of being dependent on their children. They seem to forget it is the right they deserve because they have done so much for their young and it is the obligation that their children should assume because they have received so much care from their parents. 第四单元

First many law schools and medical schools 2)indicate that the best preparation for them is that preparation which makes a student 3)capable of

criritical thinking; of clear , logical self-expression; of sensitive 4)analysis of the motives, the actions, and the thoughts of other human beings. These are the skills that the study of English is designed to teach. Second, the English major with an emphasis in business is 5)particularly well prepared for a future in business administration. Third, English majors are also at work in the thousand 6)occupations provided by government at all levels.

In short, a major in English is 7)neither restricting nor impractical: the study of English is excellent preparation for 8)professional life.

Die-hard football fans are often (1) portrayed as lonely misfits, but a study has (2) revealed that football fans suffer fewer bouts of (3) depression and alienation than people who never watch the (4) game.

The research shows that through football matches, fans can win (5) admiration not for their own achievements, but through their (6) connection to a team that wins.

More surprising is that they have higher self-esteem than people (7) uninterested in sports. Some ardent fans remain (8) loyal to their teams through thick and thin, and this can be explained by the desire to belong to a group or a society. Having experienced the family's ups and downs from the good old days to the Great Recession , the author and her family finally learned not to take anything for granted. Bill, the author's husband , was a man with entrepreneurial spirit, a personal quality the author liked him about and also the source of both excitement and anxiety of the family. Bill can always find the fun of working in some challenging and exciting jobs in start–ups or big companies like Cisco and Google . And the family was living the American Dream. However , when the Great Recession hit, the family was suffered like many others. When many American lost their jobs ,Bill resigned from his position in Google because it was no longer exciting .For months, he couldn't find any suitable job and the family had to live on their depleted savings, which made the author worry about their children's college tuition , the mortgage, and their retirement .Fortunately , from a spring cleaning initiated by Bill, the family recongnized the significance of the "new normal" life and liked it by letting go the unnecessary old "baggage, " feeling that they need less and ask less. Six months later , both Bill and the author began their decent career again with a new attitude towards life and the future.

Although American people spend large sums of money on Valentine's Day greeting cards, there is an even bigger potential for selling these cards in Asia. The world famous Hallmark card manufacturing company has created several organizations in Asia and is turning some of the areas in Asia from distribution centers into investment ones .

The sales of Hallmark cards in Asia seem to show that the number of romantic consumers in Asia is rising as Hallmark card can help to overcome some of the emotional restrictions which still reign in many Asia countries .For example, a Chinese man can buy and give his sweetie a Hallmark card for Valentine's Day to express his emotions and can avoid losing face in case of being refused ; and the Japanese and Korean women who are more emotionally inhibited than men can send a Hallmark card to their sweethearts to show their affection.

It's not necessary to translate Hallmark English cards into different local languages,because love is global,and no language skill is needed. What's more,English is a fashionable language nowadays,sending an English card is more impressive and updated than sending one in one's mother tongue.
