高考英语语法之:时间状语从句

三大从句是高中最重要的语法点,没有“之一”。对于从句的考察贯穿高考英语试卷的始终,从第一个单项听力,到最后的写作。名词性从句、状语从句以及定语从句三者重要性不分伯仲。

但正如大家知道的,“三大”之一的状语从句,种类繁多。时间、地点、原因、结果、条件、让步、条件、比较、方式9种,基本上大家在经历了学校课堂的洗礼后,也都耳熟能详。殊不知,这9种之中,对于高考来说,重要性的区别是很大的。考频为证,以2006-2010年5年全国高考18个省市的19套卷子的单项选择题为例,涉及到状语从句的题目共有93道,其中时间状语从句考到了24题,条件状语从句26题。孰轻孰重,不多赘述。

与名词性从句不同,状语从句最简单也最直接的办法就是牢固掌握相关连词或者连词词组的中文意思。以时间状语从句为例,需要掌握的连词范围如下:

when/while/as/before/after/until/as soon as

1、when: 做“当……的时候”讲,是个尽人皆知的意思,所以高考是不会考到的。相对的,会考到“突然,就在那时”的意思,用以表示从句动作发生的突发性。

2010年全国II卷7题:

Tom was about to close the windows _____ his attention was caught by a bird.

A. when

B. if

C. and

鉴于大家都看得明白,不多赘述。

2、while:当初很多老师讲的时候,告诉我们while和when的区别在于前者连接的主从句一定都用进行时态,是不对的。而且,这更不是判断二者区别的办法。

正解:while在同做“当……的时候”讲时,侧重表达主从句动作的对比关系,翻译成“而”字。

e.g. He has b een a father of 2 babies while I?m still single.

2010年全国I卷25题:

Mary made coffee her guests were finishing their meal.

A.so that B. although C. while D. as if

例句和真题都反复证明了不该在主从句时态上纠结,表示前后动作的对比才是王道。

3、as:同做“当……时”的时候,as更强调主从句动作同时发生,译作“一边……一边……”

e.g. As he works, he studies. 他半工半读(一边工作一边读书)。

4、before VS after: 这两个连词大家貌似很熟,但其实是历年高考中大家最容易犯错的两个连词。例如可以试问自己下:before后面接先发生动作后发生动作?after后面接先发生后发生?我猜90%以上的各位至少会纠结10秒钟以上的时间。

做此类时间状语从句题的罩门就是摸清动作发生的先后顺序。所以牢记“…前?(before)接后,…后?(after)接前”这样的口诀,可以瞬间解决问题。Plus: 关于这两个连词还有一个“损招”:大量的真题证明,只要4个选项中before和after同时出现,则一定从中二选一,没有反例!

5、until: 同样也是一个高频考点。大多数同学都认识作“知道”讲,而且相信很多同学对“not…until…”结构作“直到……才……”讲的这种说法耳熟能详。但真题证明了:首先,高考中如果until成为正确项的时候,把“直到”的意思翻到句子中是翻译不通的;而且,以下句为例:The baby won?t stop crying until his mother tells him a story. 是译作“小孩儿不会停止哭泣直到他妈给他讲个故事”,还是“直到他妈给他讲故事,孩子才停止哭泣”?这也是让很多人头大的问题。

综上所述,给出正解:无论肯定句还是否定句,until的意思都是“过则反主”,即“过了从句所发生的动作后,则发生与主句相反的动作”。

上句正解:过了他妈给他讲故事这个动作时间,小孩儿就停止哭泣了,但主句说不会停哭,所以选择until。

6、as soon as: 这个连词词组就比较简单,译为“一……就……”,没啥技术含量,而且历年真题中一定与as long as(只要)和as far as(就……而言)同时出现在选项中。

另外,做状语从句的题目时,切忌直接将连词的意思逐个带回题目中翻译,因为往往被认为是带入翻译最通顺的选项,其实是强干扰项,这同样也是绝大多数人选错的原因。相反的,拿到题目后第一时间要做的是通过翻译设空点前后的主从句,找出两者之间的内在逻辑关系(因果、时间等),从而选择表示相应的逻辑的连词或连词词组。
