PartⅠ Reading Comprehension(共60分)

SectionⅠ Passage Reading (50 points)

Part A

Directions: There are 4 passages in this part. Each passage is followed by 5 questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are 4 choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the best one and mark the corresponding letter with a single bar across the square brackets on your machine-scoring ANSWER SHEET.(40 points)

Passage One

In bringing up children, every parent watches eagerly the child's acquisition (学会) of each new skill—the first spoken words, the first independent steps, or the beginning of reading and writing. It is often tempting to hurry the child beyond his natural learning rate, but this can set up dangerous feelings of failure and states of worry in the child. This might happen at any stage. A baby might be forced to use a toilet too early; a young child might be encouraged to learn to read before he knows the meaning of the words he reads. On the other hand, though, if a child is left alone too much, or without any learning opportunities, he loses his natural enthusiasm for life and his desire to find out new things for himself.

Parents vary greatly in their degree of strictness towards their children. Some may be especially strict in money matters. Others are severe over times of coming home at night or punctuality for meals. In general, the controls imposed represent the needs of the parents and the values of the community as much as the child's own happiness.

As regards the development of moral standards in the growing child, consistency is very important in parental teaching. To forbid a thing one day and excuse it the next is no foundation for morality (道德). Also, parents should realize that "example is better than precept". If they are not sincere and do not practice what they preach (说教), their children may grow confused, and emotionally insecure when they grow old enough to think for themselves, and realize they have been to some extent fooled.

A sudden awareness of a marked difference between their parents' principles and their morals can be a dangerous disappointment.

D. should create as many learning opportunities as possible

3 . The second paragraph mainly tells us that _____

A. parents should be strict with their children

B. parental controls reflect only the needs of the parents and the values of the community

C. parental restrictions vary, and are not always enforced for the benefit of the children alone

5 . In moral matters, parents should ______ .

B. be aware of the marked difference between adults and children

C. forbid things which have no foundation in morality

D. consistently ensure the security of their children

Passage Two

So long as teachers fail to distinguish between teaching and learning, they will continue to undertake to do for which only children can do for themselves. Teaching children to read is not passing reading on to them. It is certainly not endless hours spent in activities about reading. Douglas insists that "reading cannot be taught directly and schools should stop trying to do the impossible."

Teaching and learning are two entirely different processes. They differ in kind and function. The function of teaching is to create the conditions and the climate that will make it possible for children to devise the most efficient system for teaching themselves to read. Teaching is also public activity: It can be seen and observed.

Learning to read involves all that each individual does to make sense of the world of printed language. Almost all of it is private, for learning is an occupation of the mind, and that process is not open to public scrutiny. If teacher and learner roles are not interchangeable, what then can be done through teaching that will aid the child in knowledge Smith has one principal rule for all teaching instructions.

"Make learning to read easy, which means making reading a meaningful, enjoyable and frequent experience for children."

When the roles of teacher and learner are seen for what they are, and when both teacher and learner fulfill them appropriately, then much of the pressure and feeling of failure for both is eliminated. Learning to read is made easier when teachers create an environment where children are given the opportunity to solve the problem of learning to read by reading.

Since we are social beings, the quality of our lives depends in large measure

possibility to give and receive support from one another under stressful(有压力

based on their interpersonal ties. Those of us with strong support systems appear

better able to deal with major life changes and daily problems. People with strong

social ties live longer and have better health than those without such ties. Studies

over types of illnesses, from depression to heart disease, show that the presence

of social support helps people defend themselves against illness, and the absence

of such support makes poor health more likely.

Social support cushions stress in a number of ways. First, friends, relatives and co-workers may let us know that they value us. Our self-respect is strengthened when we feel accepted by others in spite of our faults and difficulties. Second, other people often provide us with informational support. They help us to define and understand our problems and find solutions to , we typically find social companionship supportive. Taking part in free-time activities with others helps us to meet our social needs while at the same time distracting(转移注意力)us from our worries and troubles. Finally, other people may give us instrumental support — money aid, material resources, and needed services — that reduces stress by helping us resolve and deal with our problems.

One factor that can influence consumers is their mood state. Mood may be defined 36 a temporary and mild positive or negative feeling that is generalized and not tied 37 any particular circumstance. Moods should be 38 from emotions which are usually more intense, 39 to specific circumstances, and often conscious. 40 one sense, the effect of a consumer’s mood can be thought of in 41 the same way as can our reactions to the 42 of our friends—when our friends are happ y and “up”, that tends to influence us positively; 43 when they are “down”, that can have a 44 impact on us. Similarly, consumers operating under

a 45 mood state tend to react to stimulant(刺激因素)in a direction 46 with that mood state. Thus, for example, we should expect to see 47 in a positive mood state evaluate products in more of a 48 manner than they would when not in such

a state. 49 mood states appear capable of 50 a consumer’s memory.

Moods appear to be 51 influenced by marketing techniques. For example, the rhythm, pitch, and 52 of music has been shown to influence behavior such as the 53 of time spent in supermarkets or 54 to purchase products. In addition, advertising can influence consumers’ moods which, in 55 , are capable of influencing consumers’ reactions to products.

When Andrea Peterson landed her first teaching job, she faced the daunting task of creating a music program with almost no money for equipment or supplies in a climate where standards-based learning was the focus and music just provided a break for students and teachers.

For her drive and creativity in overcoming those challenges, she’s been named national teacher of the year.

Principal Waynes Kettler said he’s worked with many outstanding teachers in his 22 years as an educator, but Peterson is “just that one step above anybody I’ve ever worked with before.”

Kettler and others at Monte Cristo Elementary School talk about the ways she has introduced the learning from other classrooms into her music program and her creativity in working around things such as the lack of money for new music.

When students were reading . Hinton’s novel The Outsiders in their regular classroom, Peterson helped them write a 30-minute play with scenes from the book. Then they chose three Broadway tunes that focused on race, equality and social justice, the themes of the book. Peterson composed two other songs herself after classroom discussions about the play and the book.

The honor means a lot to residents of Granie Falls. It’s inspiring to know that people from small towns can even win national honors.

As national teacher of the year, Peterson will spend the next year outside classroom, as a national and international spokeswoman for education.

Not surprisingly, she is a big believer in the value of arts education. She said it’s essential for schools to offer classes such as art or music and physical education because for some kids one of those subjects is the only thing that motivates them to come back to school day after day.

56. When Peterson began her teaching career, the school ___________________.

(66)Architects have long had the feeling that the places we live in can affect our thoughts, feelings and behaviors. But now scientists are giving this feeling

an empirical(经验的, 实证的)basis. (67)They are discovering how to design spaces that promote creativity, keep people focused, and lead to relaxation.

Researches show that aspects of the physical environment can influence creativity. In 2007, Joan Meyers-Levy at the University of Minnesota, reported that the height of a room’s ceiling affects how people think. (68)Her research indicates that the higher ceilings encourage people to think more freely, which may lead them to make more abstract connections. Low ceilings, on the other hand, may inspire a more detailed outlook.

(69)In addition to ceiling height, the view afforded by a building may influence an occupant’s ability to concentrate. Nancy Wells and her colleagues at Cornell University found in their study that kids who experienced the greatest increase in greenness as a result of a family move made the most gains on a standard test of attention.

Using nature to improve focus of attention ought to pay off academically, and it seems to, according to a study led by C. Kenneth Tanner, head of the School Design &Planning Laboratory at University of Georgia. Tanner and his team found that students in classrooms with unblocked views of at least 50 feet outside the window had higher scores on tests of vocabulary, language arts and maths than did students whose classrooms primarily overlooked roads and parking lots.

Recent study on room lighting design suggests that dim(暗淡的)light helps people to loosen up. (70)If that is true generally, keeping the light low during dinner or at parties could increase relaxation. Researchers of Harvard Medical School also discovered that furniture with rounded edges could help visitors relax.

66. Architects have long had the feeling that the places we live in can affect our thoughts, feelings and behaviors.

67. They are discovering how to design spaces that promote creativity, keep people focused, and lead to relaxation.

68. Her research indicates that the higher ceilings encourage people to think more freely, which may lead them to make more abstract connections.

69. In addition to ceiling height, the view afforded by a building may influence an occupant’s ability to concentrate.

70. If that is true generally, keeping the light low during dinner or at parties could increase relaxation.

记忆方法因人而异,但一条不变的真理就是词汇不但要会背,而且要会用。所以背诵文章、例句的效果远比干巴巴地背单词要好得多,而且有趣得多。当然最好是在理解的基 础上背诵。 记忆词汇的途径有以下几种: 1)词汇书; 2)范文;

The report was released this week at the World Water Forum in Brasilia. The conference has been described as the world’s larg est water-related event. Federal District Governor Rodrigo Rollemberg spoke at a panel discussion on Tuesday at the forum. He described water shortages as a worldwide problem. “Here in Brasilia, it is no different,” he added. The public water supply has less water because of low rainfall as well as fast and disorderly growth in Brasilia, which is part of the Federal District, Rollemberg said. In January 2016, after three years of little rain, district officials began limiting how much water people could use. The governments of the Federal District and the nearby state of Goias also gave $166 million to develop water infrastructure (基础设施). Demand around the world is expected to increase by nearly one-third by 2050. By then, 5 billion people could be left with poor access to water, the U.N. warned in its 2018 World Water Development Report. To avoid such a crisis, U.N. officials called for “nature-based solutions” that use or copy natural processes that should be

It can free people form poverty, giveing them the power to greatly improve thier lives and take a productive place in society. It can also free communities and countries, allowing them to leap forward into periods ofg wealth and social unity that otherwisewould not be possible. For this reason, the international community has committed itself to getting all the world's children into primary school by 2015, a commitment known as Education for All. Can Education for All be achieved by 2015? The answer is definitely “yes”, although it is a difficult task. If we now measure the goal in terms of children success fully completing a minimum of five yeas of primary school, instead of just enrolling for classes, which used to be the measuring stick for education, the challenge will become even more difficult. Only 32 countries were formerly believed to be at risk of not achieving education for all on the basis of enrollment rates. The number rises to 88 if completion rates are used as the standard.Still, the goai is achievable with the rigt policies and the right support form the international community. 59 of the 88 countries at risk can reah universal primary completion by 2015 if they bring the efficiency and quality of their education systems into line with standards observed in higher-perforrming systtems.Theg also need significant increasesin external(外部的)financing and technical support. The 29 countries lagging(落后) farthest behind wll not reach the goal without unprecedented(空前的)rates of progress. But this is attainable with creative solutions, including the use of information technologies, flexible and targeted foreign aid, and fewer people living in poverty. A key lesson of experience about what makes development effective is that a country'to use aid well depends heavily on its policies, institutions and management.Where a country scores well on these standards, foreign assistance can be highly effective.
