Nowadays (recently/these days/currently), there has been a heated discussion (a sensational debate) on the issue of sth.( on whether or not we should …) People who prefer （to treat college as destination of tourists）have their reasons: The first reason for their choice is, they maintain, that (this will provide university an extra sum of money, will can help solve the university financial problem). Besides, (this practice), they go on to point out, (can help college students have contact with the outside world). What is more important,. they also claim that colleges can be soils for teenage tourists to cultivate their love for knowledge and truth.
But others may not agree. They would argue that (this will inevitably distract college students from their study)；What is worse, they emphasize, (tourists might leave some rubbish on the campus, which will ruin the beauty of campus).
Who is right? Of course both sides have their reasons. Were I to offer my choice, I would not hesitate a moment to say that I favor (the former side). After all, (colleges and universities are public places as long as tourists take care not to cause trouble for colleges).
How to Use the Library
A library is a building for a collection of books, magazines, periodicals and newspapers. The books are kept on the shelves in the stack room whereas rihe magazines,journals,etc. in the reading rooms. Modern libraries also have xerox rooms, and computer rooms.
If you want to borrow books, you can go to the loan desk, look over the correct call numbers in the card catalog and ask the librarian to take them out for you. Or you’re allowed to enter the stack room to find books for yourself, you can look up the bound volume of index for the articles relative to the subject, on which you are going to write a thesis. If the library doesn’t subscribe to the magazine which carries the article you want, you can borrow the magazine from other libraries by means of interlibrary loan service. Don’t forget to show your libr ary card or I.D. card to the librarian before you go into the reading room, where you can read magazines or newspapers. If you find a good article and want to keep it, you can have it duplicated in the xerox room. Besides, if you want to watch films or slides, you can ask the projectionist to play the videotape for you in theaudio-visual room, where you can.also listen to language tapes and music tapes.
World Population
According to a recent report from the United Nations, the world population continues to grow. It is over 5 billion now. It could reach 8.4 billion in the year 2025.
But during the past 10 years or so, a large and rapid drop in the world’s birth rate has taken place.Families generally are smaller now than they were a few years ago. It is happening in both developing and developed countries.
China is such a country that has already cut its rate of population growth by about one half since ! 970. Each Chinese family has no more than one child. And the hope is to reach a zero population growth rate by 2010.
Several countries in Europe already have a negative growth rate. Experts say that these countries could face a serious shortage of workers in the future. And the persons who are working could face much higher taxes to help support the growing number of retirees.
