1. Introduction

The comparison of educational differences between China and the United States includes both the realizition of the marrow of China's traditional education and the insight of the quintessence of American education. We can get beneficial enlightenment by studying the thought , which is beneficial to the current educational reform.

2.1. General introduction to the two higher educations

Higher education in the United States includes a variety of institutions of higher education. Strong research and funding have helped make United States colleges and universities among the world's most prestigious, making them particularly attractive to international students, professors and researchers in the pursuit of academic excellence. Public universities, private universities, liberal arts colleges, and community colleges all have a significant role in higher education in the United States.

Higher education in China is continuously growing, changing and developing. There are over 2,000 universities and colleges, with more than six million enrollments in total. China has set up a degree system, including Bachelors, Masters and Doctoral degrees that are also open to foreign students. The country offers non-degree programs as well.

2.2. General history of two higher educations

2.2.1. History of Chinese education

The traditional Chinese education system is based on legalist and Confucian ideals. The teaching of Confucius has shaped the overall Chinese mindset for the past 2500 years. But, other outside forces have played a large role in the nation's educational development. The First Opium War of 1840, for example, opened China to the rest of

the world. As a result, Chinese intellectuals discovered the numerous western advances in science and technology. This new information greatly impacted the higher education system and curriculum.Soviet influence in the early 1950s brought all higher education under government leadership. Research was separated from teaching. The government also introduced a central plan for a nationally unified instruction system, i.e. texts, syllabi, etc. The impact of this shift can still be seen today. Chinese higher education continues its struggle with excessive departmentalization, segmentation, and overspecialization in particular.

From 1967 to 1976, China’s Cultural Revolution took another toll on higher education, which was devastated more than any other sector of the country. The enrollment of postsecondary students can be used as example to illustrate the impacts. The number dropped from 674,400 to 47,800. This has had a major impact on education in the 21st century. The decline in educational quality was profound..In 1977, Deng Xiaoping made the decision of resuming the National Higher Education Entrance Examination (Gao Kao), having profound impact on Chinese higher education in history. From the 1980s on, Chinese higher education has undergone a series of reforms that have slowly brought improvement.

2.2.2. History of American higher education

Religious denominations established most early colleges in order to train ministers. They were modeled after Oxford and Cambridge universities. Harvard College was founded by the colonial legislature in 1636, and named after an early benefactor. Most of the funding came from the colony, but the college early began to collect endowment. Harvard at first focused on training young men for the ministry, and won general support from the Puritan colonies. Yale College was founded in 1701, and in 1716 was relocated to New Haven, Connecticut. The conservative Puritan ministers of Connecticut had grown dissatisfied with the more liberal theology of Harvard, and wanted their own school to train orthodox ministers.In New York City, the Anglicans set up King's College in 1746, with its president Doctor Samuel Johnson the only teacher. It closed during the American Revolution, and reopened in 1784 under the

name of Columbia College; it is now Columbia University.

2.3. Detailed analysis of the differences

2.3.1. The difference in subjects

The United States higher education attaches great importance to the humanities and history of education which in the United States is commonly set. For example,University of Maryland, College Park and other 11 universities. Nowadays, we do not have many History Department of Humanities Department in Colleges and universities . Mainly is the kind of comprehensive universities and colleges. At the same time, university in the United States , humanities and history course is the important content of College students. Chinese college of humanities history lesson is basic for their respective professional. Cultural and professional humanities class are rare. In modern society, the renewal of knowledge is very fast. And the knowledge in university is often obsolete. However, humanistic spirit and cultivating mode of thinking is the most fundamental, is not easy to date.

2.3.2. The difference in credit system

Universities in the United States are the implementation of credit system. Every student chooses subjects according to their interests. As long as the credits to graduate with diploma and degree. The American higher education system is extremely diverse and flexible, which is also in the world higher education; It is a opportunity to expand their knowledge, but also offers convenience condition to the students towards their interest in the direction of professional development. Students can also be dropped out of school to go to work. His credits can be remained and a year or a few years later he will continue to study in the university. In China, the student may choose the specialty according to own interest and hobby, but change of specialty in the school is not easy, and transformation of school is more difficult. At present, China's University also opening towards the direction. More and more students go to universities to further their studies.

2.3.3. The difference in teaching methods

Us’s higher education was considered as the best education in the world . Comparing the elementary education between American and China, people's universal

view will be: China's elementary education aims to build the foundation of education with more study and less thought. While US's education aims to build such an education to raise the creativity with less study and more thought. US's education pays more attention to raise student's self-confidence,independence,spirit of supporting oneself, but China's education emphases on training the students to be strict,rigorous spiritual. When American school inspects the result of student, they emphasize more on the ability to analyze and solve the question but not the ability of memory or description.

2.4 Culture factors for the differences

Education, is a kind of cultural phenomenon, different education reflects the different social and cultural connotation.

The United States of America is a country of immigrants. Its ancestor is from all over the world. Moving to the United States is not only the geographical position of the move, but also the customs of the host country to the new place of residence. It is called Multicultural Education which is in order to pursue multiple racial, ethnic and cultural groups shall jointly enjoy the equal right to receive education.

With a short history, the United States did not have a heavy historical burden. Its civilization and culture are lack of sense of history and stability. The United States developed market culture, science and technology is the modern culture prominent symbol. But China has a long history and splendid civilization and culture, broad and profound. The same as the other civilization, Chinese culture accumulation will inevitably be some dross, some negative, conservative ideas and affects the behavior of people in various fields.

China is a multi-ethnic, multi-lingual country. But from the point of development, minority area education level is generally low. We should learn about the tolerance of cultures in America which means a kind of liberal education.

In my opinion, one of the main problems with todayˊs education is that too much emphasis is placed on the test score. It has become the most important criterion for college enrollment, A student, however creative and intelligent, will not be

admitted into a college if his total scores are just one point less than required. It also one of the crucial factors either in job assignment or in employment competitions.

The competition for high scores among students become intense. Students find themselves concentrating more on strategies to achieve high scores than on acquiring the knowledge. They will play truant of some subsidiary courses, skip over the substance which will not be tested on, even pump teachers for hints on upcoming exams.

Teachers are apt to give the students high scores .As their job is judged mainly by the students performance in terms of scores,some teachers even leak “accidentally”the exam questions or lower their criteria of scoring.

As a result, the competition for high scores becomes so intense that it actually defeats the academic goals of education.

3.Conclusion

With different history,higher education in the United States includes a variety of institutions of higher education and higher education in China is continuously growing, changing and developing. There are differences in subjects: the humanities and history of education in the United States is commonly set. Chinese college of humanities history lesson is basic for their respective professional. Cultural and professional humanities class are rare; There are differences in credit system: Universities in the United States are the implementation of credit system and the American higher education system is more diverse and flexible than Chinese education; There are differences in teaching methods: China's elementary education aims to build the foundation of education with more study and less thought. While US's education aims to build such an education to raise the creativity with less study and more thought. US's education pays more attention to raise student's self-confidence,independence,spirit of supporting oneself, but China's education emphases on training the students to be strict, rigorous spiritual. It has been developing since long before the United States became a country with its own unique social and cultural characteristics .Today, the United States of America is an ethnically and racially diverse country as a result of large-scale immigration from many different countries throughout its history. Chinese culture is the respect of East land. Chinese culture have a long history ,and it is very different from American . The part of social different. If you are in China , it is not rare to see that a crowded of people throng in the supermarket, trying to get service first. People in China do line up the scholar said in a humorous tone , but they prefer to line up at a horizontal way. In contrast , in western countries , say in American ,people always line up ,no matter in a big bank or a small store .And they take it for granted. Lining up has long since become part of their life that they scarcely doubt it or grow impatient while doing it. The food different .Most Chinese families are used to buying fresh food every day while Americans like to buy from supermarket a large bag onetime then eat cold food everyday. Chinese people use chopsticks to eat while American people use folks and knives. when the guest come ,Chinese will make a cup of hot tea, tea can reduce blood cholesterol.on the contrary, American people like drinking coffee, but it is possible to increase blood fat and stimulation to the heart.American breakfast food mainly includes Bread, milk or dairy products, meat, vegetables and fruits. 西方文化与礼仪论文 在这学期我选修了《西方文化与礼仪》这个课程。之所以选它是因为,对于个人来说,适当的礼仪既尊重别人同时也是尊重自己的体现,在个人事业发展中起着决定性作用。它提升人的涵养,增进了解沟通,细微之处显真情。对内可融洽关系,对外可树立形象,营造和谐的工作和生活环境。 特别是中西方之间,礼仪上的差别很大,因为不了解这些差异而引起的误会和笑话并不少见。有一个故事是:一个国民党军官携夫人去机场迎接来自美国的顾问。双方见面后,美国顾问出于礼貌说:“您的夫人真漂亮!”军官甚感尴尬又不免客套一番:“哪里,哪里!”在中国,这本是一句很普通的客套话,可是蹩脚的翻译却把这句话译成:where?where?美国顾问听了莫明其妙,心想:我只是礼貌地称赞一下他的夫人,他居然问起我他的夫人哪里漂亮?于是他只好说:“从头到脚都漂亮!”这个故事就是由于中西文化差异闹出的礼仪上的笑话。由此可见,了解中西方礼尚交往之间的习惯差异是很有必要的。 往大处来说,一个国家无论是在政治上,还是在经济贸易中,了解对方国家的礼仪习惯,将有利于各国之间的交往。从小处来讲,一个人了解对方的礼仪民间习惯,是对对方的尊重,容易给对方留下一个好印象,以便交往的顺利进行。随着东西方文化的不断发展,东西方的礼仪正在相互融合,西方人逐渐地接受了东方文化中重情感等合理因素,东方人也逐渐地接受了西方文化中先进文明的礼仪和交往方式。但在现实生活中,由于东西方文化的差异而对礼仪产生的影响还很多,为此本文就以下几方面具体探讨东西方文化差异对礼仪所产生的影响: 社会交往方式的差异对礼仪的影响 东西方文化都非常重视人际交往,但在交往的观念、交往的方式上都有着明显的差别。如中国人热情好客,在人际交往中饱含热情,问寒问暖,似乎没有什么可保留的,对于了解有关年龄、职业、收入、婚姻状况、子女等问题,觉得都理所当然。而在西方国家中,特别重视对方的隐私权。个人稳私主要包括:个人状况(年龄、工作、收入、婚姻、子女等)、政治观念(支持或反对何种党派)、宗教信仰(信仰什么宗教)、个人行为动向(去何种地方,与谁交往、通信)等。凡是涉及到个人隐私的都不能直接过问。西方人一般不愿意干涉别人的私生活和个人隐私,也不愿意被别人干涉。比如,中国人会直接询问别人所买物品的价格。因为在中国人看来,物品的贵贱只是表示该物品的质量。而在西方人眼里,如果你直接询问别人所购物品的价格,就可能是探问对方的经济条件,因此,这也是西方人的隐私,属于不宜直接询问的问题。如果你想了解该物品的价格,只能委婉地夸耀、赞赏该物品,而这样的情况下西方人一般也只告诉你该物品的贵或贱,一般不会告诉你准确价格。中国人见面打招呼时喜欢问一句“上哪儿去?”,这是招呼的一种形式。而在美国,你如果问朋友上哪儿去,则可能会使对方尴尬,因为这也属于对方的隐私,是你不该过问的。另外,人际交往的空间距离可以分为亲密距离、个人距离、社交距离、公共距离四种。中国人的空间距离相对较近。我们在大街上经常可以看到两个中国少女挽臂亲昵而行,而在西方则很少见到。西方人觉得中国人过于亲近,而中国人又会觉得西方人过于冷淡、傲慢,过分疏远,是不友好的表现。如果中国人发现交际对方的衣服上有根线头,他会很自然地帮助对方摘掉;而在西方人眼里,这是不礼貌之举。中国人看到朋友穿了件非常漂亮的衣服,会上前摸一摸,询问价钱或质地;而西方人则不会这样做,他们

Comparison of the Politics in Britain and United States Abstract: The system that British established in 19 century has a profound effect not only on its own country’s society developments of politics and history but also on other counties’ modern institution, politics and history. British is the mother of world capitalist constitutionalism. As a powerful capitalistic country, US’system is also based on the British’s system and set a prefect system after some reforms. Even so, the systems of the two countries still have many differences. Both of the two countries have powerful political systems in the world. Introduction: (political institution is superstructure, generally refers to the state power organs and the basic system which adapted with the social nature. "Political system, as same as the various systems of the human society, is the product of history development, branding with time and space.”) After the English bourgeois revolution, democratic politics was gradually established. The constitution was promulgated and constitutionalism was gradually be taken. Capitalism got a considerable development in Britain. Britain built the first set of the capitalist system, which is known as the source and model of Western political system. British and US political systems have the same theoretical basis: the principle of "separation of powers” and the theory of “human rights”; the concrete content includes the parliamentary system, the electoral system, the judicial system, and the political party system, etc; these are all considered to be the elements of "people's democracy", Regimes implemented the principles of separation of powers and check and balance and the "rule of law". And most fundamentally,as two typical representatives of capitalist countries’ political systems, Britain and USA have the same nature in the maintenance of bourgeois interests and the private capitalist system, the implementation of other aspects of bourgeois dictatorship. Comparison of constitutions Britain is typical of countries with unwritten constitution, there is no unified, complete written form, and its constitutional system is extremely complex which is constituted by a variety of written and unwritten customary law, jurisprudence and constitutional practices constituted. British constitution can not be listed by one or several pieces of documents, nor strict distinct by the time, it lacks rigorous and explicit content, consistent and complete system。 The United States Constitution is the first written constitution in the world. In the course of its development, the United States Constitution formed the four main principles: the separation of powers and checks and balances, federalism, limited the powers of the government and judicial review. The US Constitution carried thorough the separation of powers which provide the separation of the legislative, judicial and administrative. Congress, the Federal Court and the President perform their respective duties, and the division of labor between federal, state and local governments is also very clear. Federal Court is an important weight in the separation of powers and checks and balances in the United States, in addition to the administrative function and legislative function, the most important function is the supervisory function and judicial function.
