About the Author
James Matthew Barrie was born in1860 in Angus,Scotland.He is the ninth of ten children and his parents are weavers.As a child he loves reading and playing make-believe games about pirates with his school friends.Barrie grows up in Scotland, then he moves to London because he wants to become a writer.He writes novels,plays for the theatre and articles for newspapers.He also makes friends with many writers.
In London,Barrie often takes his dog for walks in Kensingston Gardens.One day he meets the Llewelyn Davies family there: George,John,Michael,Peter and Nicholas, and their mother,Sylvia.They become good friends and Barrie starts to spend a lot of time with the family.He invents stories to entertain the boys.He tells them that baby Peter can fly, and the bars on the windows of the children's bedroom are to stop him flying away.The idea for the story of Peter Pan is born.First Barrie writes a play called Peter Pan.It is very popular and he decides to write a novel.

Peter Pan is one of the best-loved children's books of all time.It tells the story of three children,Wendy,John and Michael Darling,who live in London with their parents and their nurse,a dog called Nana.One night when Mr.and Mrs.Darling go out,Wendy meets Peter Pan,a little boy who never grows up.Peter teaches the Darling children to fly and takes them away to an island called Neverland.On Neverland they meet pirates, Indians and a mermaids and have lots of adventures.
Wendy becomes a mother for some children called the Lost Boys.They live with Peter Pan in a house under the ground.But Captain Hook and evil pirate,captures Wendy and the boys.Peter goes to the pirate ship to rescue them and there is a dramatic sword fight between him and the captain.After that the children fly back to their home in London. Mrs.Darling agrees to adopt all the Lost Boys. She offers to adopt Peter,too,but he doesn't want to grow up and returns to Neverland. Many years pass.When Peter visits Wendy again,she is married and has the daughter of her own.Peter takes her daughter to Neverland for a visit,and then years later he takes her daughter's daughter.

Chapter1The Darling Family
All children grow up to be adults.All children,that is,except one.Wendy they knows this.One day she grows up,too.But at the start of our story she's still a child.
Wendy lives with her parents,Mr.and Mrs.Darling,and her brothers,John and Michael,at number14(the house number on the street).

第一章达林一家

Chapter2Peter loses his shadow
One morning Mrs.Darling finds some leaves on the bedroom floor.She is surprised because it's a strange place to find leaves. When Wendy sees them,she smiles and says:“Oh!It's Peter again!He is a naughty boy!He never cleans his feet.
This is the first time that Mrs.Darling hears about Peter Pan.
Wendy tells her mother that Peter Pan comes into the bedroom during the night.He sits on her bed and plays tunes to her on a pipe. She doesn't wake up but she knows Peter is there.
“No one can come into the house without knocking on the door.Wendy,”Mrs.Darling says.
“I think Peter comes in through the window,”replies Wendy.
“But the window is upstairs,my dear!It’s too high.”
“But the leaves are near the window,”says Wendy.
And it is true.The leaves are very near the window.Mrs.Darling doesn't know what to think.Perhaps Peter Pan comes to the house in Wendy’s dreams.

While she is sleeping,the bedroom window blows open and a tall boy drops onto the floor.There's a strange small light beside him.The light flies around the room like a very small animal.
Mrs.Darling opens her eyes suddenly and sees the boy.She knows immediately that he is Peter Pan.He is a lovely boy and his clothes are made of leaves.But Peter isn't happy to see a grown-up and he growls at her.
Mrs.Darling screams.

The door opens and Nana comes in.She growls and runs towards the boy.Peter jumps out of the window quickly.Nana closes it,but the window catches Peter’s shadow and it breaks off.Mrs.Green takes the shadow and looks at it carefully.It's just an ordinary shadow.She puts it in the top drawer of the chest of drawers and he doesn't think about Peter again for a week.
The following Friday Nana puts the children to bed while Mr.and Mrs.Darling are getting ready to go to a party.

“Nana,good dog,”Mr.Darling says, patting her.“Look,there's some milk in your bowl,Nana.”
Nana wags her tail,runs to her bowl and begins to drink the medicine.Then she stops. She looks at Mr.Darling very sadly and goes into her kennel.

Mr.Darling feels bad now.The children don't say anything.Mrs.Darling smells the bowl and says:“Oh George,it’s your medicine!”

“Everybody loves Nana.What about me? I'm the father of the family,she is only the dog.”
Then he says:“The dog must sleep outside-that's the place for a dog.”
The children cry and Nana runs up to him, but he only says:“The right place for a dog is outside,in the yard.Nana must go there now.”
“George,George,”whispers Mrs.Darling.“Remember that boy Peter Pan!”

Michael puts his arms around her and says:“Mother,I love you very much.”
These are his last words to her for a long, long time.

Chapter3Wendy helps Peter
After Mr.and Mrs.Darling leave the house,the candles in the children's bedroom stay lit for a while.Then they go out.Now there's another small but very bright light in the room.It's flying around quickly.And when the light stops,you can see that it is really a fairy.Her name's Tinker Bell.She is looking for Peter’s shadow.She goes into all the drawers in the bedroom.She goes into the wardrobe and into pockets.

Then he tries to stick his shadow to his body again.But he can't.He tries soap from the bathroom but it doesn't work.He doesn't know what to do.He sits on the floor and begins to cry.Peter’s sobs wake Wendy up.She isn't afraid when she sees Peter,just interested. Peter is polite,too.He stands up and bows to her.She is very pleased and bows to him from the bed.“What's your name?”he asks.

“What a funny address!Do people write it on your letters?”
“I don't get letters,”he says.
“Does your mother get letters?”Wendy asks.
“I don't have a mother,”he says.He does not have a mother and he doesn't want one. But Wendy thinks this is very sad.

Peter doesn't know if he wants a kiss because he doesn't know what a kiss is.He holds out his hand.Wendy is a little surprised but she doesn't want to hurt his feelings so she gives him a thimble.
“Now,”says Peter.“I want to give you a kiss.”And he gives her one of his buttons.

The little fairy continues tinkling loudly.
“Peter,where do you live?”asks Wendy.
“With the Lost Boys.They are children who fall out of the prams.We live in Neverland.I’m their captain.”
“What fun!”cries Wendy.
“Yes,it is,says Peter.“But we are lonely. There are no girls there,only boys!And no one tells us stories like your mother tells you and your brother.”
“Oh,poor you!”cries Wendy.“I know lots and lots of stories!”

Peter takes her hand and pulls her towards the window.
“Wendy,come to Neverland with me and tell me stories!”
Of course Wendy is very pleased.But she says:“Oh dear,I can't.What about Mother? And I can't fly!”
“I can teach you,”says Peter.“You can fly around with me and talk to the stars.And Wendy,there are mermaids in Neverland.
Peter is very clever.He knows the things that Wendy likes.
“Oh!”cries Wendy.“I'd love to see a mermaid!”
“Wendy,you can put us to bed at night,”he says.

“Lots,”Peter replies.
“Who is the pirate captain?”
“Hook,”answers Peter,and he looks angry as he says the same.
Michael begins to cry.John is worried, too.They all know about Hook,the terrible pirate captain.
“What's he like?Is he a big man?”John asks.
“He is a bit smaller since our last fight.A bit of him is missing now,”Peter replies.
“Which bit,Peter?”asks John.
“His left hand.”
So he can't fight now?”
“Oh,yes,he can.”

Hook shivers.
“The crocodile!”he cries and runs away very fast.Smee follows him.

A few minutes later,the Lost Boys come out of the holes in their trees into the wood again.Then Nibs appears.He is very excited.

Then they hear a tinkling sound above them.
“It's Tink,”the boys all cry together.

“A lady!And she is dead because of us!”says Nibs.“Peter brings us a mother and we kill her!”
They feel very sorry for themselves now. Then suddenly they hear Peter’s voice.
“Great news,boys,”he cries.“I have a mother for you all.She is flying this way.”
The boys move to one side and point to Wendy’s body.Peter looks at her,he does not know what to do.He pulls the arrow out.
“Is this your arrow,Tootles?”He asks angrily.
“Yes,Peter,”says Tootles.He’s on his knees now.Peter lifts the arrow and he her holds it like a knife over Tootles.

But some things stops Peter's hand.

“She's alive,”he says.

Time passes.Wendy cooks for the boys and a man's their socks and trousers.She is very busy,but she likes being their mother. She doesn't worry about her mother and father, but she worries about John and Michael.They are starting to forget their old life.Perhaps this is because there are so many exciting adventures in Neverland.
One night,for example,the Indians attack their house under the ground.Some of the Indians go into the holes in the trees and can't get out again.The other Indians have to pull them out,like corks from bottles.
Another day Peter saves Tiger Lily,an Indian princess,from Captain Hook.The Indians become Peter's friends after that.They guard the entrances to the house under the ground and protect the Lost Boys from the pirates.
Then another day the pirates try to kill the boys with a poisoned cake.Luckily Wendy takes it from them in time.
But then the“Night of Nights”arrives. The children don't know it,but this is the last evening on Neverland.In the house under the ground,Wendy puts John and Michael and the Lost Boys to bed.She starts to tell them their favorite https://www.360docs.net/doc/5219226644.html,ually Peter puts his hands over his ears because he doesn't like this story, but tonight he sits and listens with the others.
