Impressions of Pride and Prejudice

I’ve read a book called Pride and Prejudice written by Jane Austen during this winter holidays. Jane Austen was unmarried all her life. She was born in a mid-class family and was brought up in a comfortable environment with harmonious surroundings, so there’s not too many conflicts in her sight neither in her novel. In Pride and Prejudice she talked different ideas about love and marriage through different characters.

The novel has told an interesting story: Mr. Bennet is an English gentleman with an estate in Hertfordshire. He has five unmarried daughters but no sons while his inheritance must be inherited by a male, so Mrs. Bennet has been keen to seek husband for her daughters with great enthusiasm. One day the Bennets had a new neighbor called Bingley who was a wealthy bachelor

and followed be the target of Mrs. Bennet. At a ball Bingley fell in love with Jane Bennet who’s the oldest daughter of the Bennets. Bingley’s friend Darcy also came to the ball and struck the sights, many girls liked him while he thought all of them couldn’t suit his preference, including Elizabeth. Mr. Darcy always shows others a impression of pride, having found this Elizabeth began to hate Mr. Darcy. Before long Darcy fell in love with Elizabeth Bennett(second oldest daughter in the Bennets) because of her lovely behavior, while Elizabeth is disgusted by his pride and has a prejudice about him. The official Wickham was welcomed by the villagers, and Elizabeth also took a shine to him. Wickham told Elizabeth that his father had been the steward of the Darcys. The old Darcy had regarded Wickham as his own son and showed more love to him than to Mr. Darcy. After the old Darcy died, the property should be inherited by Wickham was all deprived by Mr. Darcy, also was his pastorate. All this increased Eli’s prejudice about Mr. Darcy. At another ball Mr. Darcy invited Elizabeth to dance with him, but Eli refused him. Eli’s elder male cousin Mr. Collin came to Hertfordshire to inherit the Bennett's property by rules, he wanted to marry with one of the Bennets. Having known that Jane was already engaged with Mr. Bingley, he asked Elizabeth to marry him but was seriously rejected. At last he proposed to Charllote who was Eli’s friend. Mr. Collins was good at flattering and he got the pastorate with the help of Lady Catherine. Once his family was invited to Rosings Garden by Lady Catherine. Elizabeth also went there with Mr. Collin and Charllote. There she met Mr. Darcy who’s Lady Catherine’s nephew. Later in a garden, Sir William told Eli about Mr. Darcy’s latest act of dissuading Mr. Bingley’s marring Jane Bennet which caused Eli’s exceedingly anger. Then Mr. Darcy came to the Collins’and confessed his love for Elizabeth, of course he was rejected impolitely. Afterwards Mr. Darcy wrote a letter to Eli in order to remove her misunderstandings of him. Elizabeth’s uncle and aunt were also impressed by Mr. Darcy’s politeness. Gradually Eli’s prejudice of Mr. Darcy diappeared. Eventually they became couple.

The writer Jane Austen disclosed mid-class young ladies’different ideas of marriage and love through describing the different ways in which the Bennet girls doing with their marriage problems ,and this undoubtedly shows the writer’s idea about love and marriage: it’s wrong to get married just for property, wealth and status while neither would it be without caring about those elements.Jane Austen just attached great significance to marriage through her novel by telling people that marriage should be regarded carefully cause it is not a game you could just enjoy without prudent consideration. She also wanted to deliver information that marriage should be based on real love between the lovers. The female subject Elizabeth is a mid-class girl, and Darcy proposed to her regardless of the gap between them, but Elizabeth refused because of his pride had formed Eli’s prejudice. Cause Darcy’s pride was a suggest of status gap between he and Eli, he wouldn’t have the same thought with Eli and consequently the ideal marriage. But later Darcy’s doings especially his change of the prideful manner eliminated Eli’s misunderstandings and prejudice about him, and Eli accepted his proposal. Those two opposite attitudes reflect female’s pursue of independent personality and equality. I think Elizabeth has personality ethic which caused her independent idea about love and marriage and in consequence she earned a happy life. There’re also Eli’s sisters’ love stories served as contrasts to the female subject’s ideal marriage, such as Charlotte and Collin’s life: they do had a luxury life, but there’s no real love between them and this kind of marriage is surely a tragedy of society.

The distance is nothing ,when one has a motive. Mrs.Bennet’s eyes sparkled with pleasure. We must trespass a litter longer on your kindness. Mrs.Bennet was profuse in her acknowledgements. I often tell my other girls they are nothing to her. That is my idea of good breading;and those persons who fancy themselves very important and never open their mouths , quiet mistake the matter. A lady’s imagination is very rapid;it jumps from admiration to love, from love to matrimony . Pride relates more to our opinion of ourselves, vanity to what we would have others think of us. He is ate up with pride. Upon my word ! Affectation of candour is common enough –one meets it everywhere. But to be candid without ostentation or design—to take the good of everybody’s character and make it still better , and say nothing of the bad—belongs to you alone Mr. Bennet was so odd a mixture of quick parts, sarcastic humor, reserve, and caprice, that the experience of three and twenty years had been insufficient to make his wife understand his character. Everything nourishes what is strong already. She had high animal spirits, and a sort of self-consequence. The day passed much as the day before had done.

After reading the Pride and Prejudice written by Jane Austen,I am impressed deeply by the touching love story. She descripeed a truthful picture of her world, especially the love and marriage between ladies and gentlemen. Therefore,it is not only a love story but also the illisution of marriage in Batain at that time. Firstly, I want to say something about Charlotte Lucas, who is twenty-seven, Although Charlotte is a well-educated girl but she doesn't have much property. She isn't as beautiful as other girls. In order to make a living at that time, she can do nothing but to marry a man who has social status or is rich enough. So she chooses Mr. Collins as her husband, though he is a vulgar pompous clergyman based on excessive formality and overuse of high-level abstractions. What enables her to make a decision is the identity of Mr. Collins and the close relation between he and Catherine, noble family. It is obvious that there is no love between them. So she is very practical. The marriage is called "world marriage ". So does Mr. Benet. He saw nothing but the beauty of his wife when he was young. He had to accept another side of his wife after marriage. I reckon that they will not live a happy life before they get a child, because they don not have true love. As we all know, love can make our life more comfortable and happy. Besides, relation between Mr. Wickham and Lydia also develops in such a way. Lydia is the youngest daughter of the family, who is a dance-loving and pure girl. Attracted by the Mr. Wickham's charming appearance and disguised words, she ran away with him secretly. So silly is she that she does not realize the reason why he is glad to stay with her is that she is very young and he desires for sex as a man.Bodily needs build a bridge between them. Without of Darcy's help, it is hard to say he prefers to marry her. The marriage is called "ridiculous marriage ". Compared the people mentioned above, I show a special preference to the couple of Darcy. We regard their marriage as "admirable marriage ".They both love each other. Despite the first impression they leave on each other, they gradually change their attitudes towards each other and fall in love with each other. Time has already brought great changes since Lizebeath and Darcy met at the first time at the boll. Especially when she heard something unpleasant from Wickham, she was angry with what Darcy did. However, As time goes on, she knows the true image of the things, she tries to understanding him and clearly feels a warm heart beneath of the arrogant appearance. Darcy also change his attitude toward Lizebeath. He holds the idea that she is not as superficial as her mother. She is very self-confident and has numerous admirable qualities. With the help of appreciation and love, they married. As to Bingley and Jane, they don not experience as much as the couple of

These past months have been a torment. I came to Rosings only to see you. I have fought against judgement, my family's expectation, the inferiority of your birth, my rank. Miss Elizabeth: Sir, I appreciate the struggle you have been through, and I am very sorry to have caused you pain. It was unconsciously done. Mr Darcy: Is this your reply? Miss Elizabeth: Yes, sir. Mr Darcy: Are you laughing at me? Miss Elizabeth: No. Mr Darcy: Are you rejecting me? Miss Elizabeth: I'm sure the feelings which hindered your regard will help you overcome it. Mr Darcy: Might I ask why with so little civility I am thus repulsed? Miss Elizabeth: I might enquire why you told me you liked me against your better judgement? If I was uncivil, then that is some excuse. But you know I have other reasons. Mr Darcy: What reasons? Miss Elizabeth: Do you think anything might tempt me to accept the man who has ruined the happiness of a most beloved sister? Do you deny that you separated a young couple who loved each other, exposing your friend to censure for caprice and my sister to derision for disappointed hopes, involving them both in acute misery? Mr Darcy: I do not deny it. Miss Elizabeth: How could you do it? Mr Darcy: I believed your sister indifferent to him. I realised his attachment was deeper than hers.

Pride and Prejudice By Jane Austen (An Excerpt from Chapter One) 第一句:"It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of wife."*在本文中"It is a truth universally acknowledged"在七个译文中,大多译为“一条举世公认的真理”。 However little known the feelings or views of such a man may be on his first entering a neighborhood, this truth is so well fixed in the minds of the surrounding families, that he is considered as the rightful property of some one or other of their daughters."*在这七则译文中,文字上各有不同的修辞,修饰。 My dear Mr Bennet',said his lady to him one day, have you heard that Netherfield Park is let at last?"*在译文一中,译者把“My dear Mr Bennet"译成“我的好老爷”,个人觉得用的不是很恰当,“老爷”这一词太偏中式化了;而在二三四五六七中,则均译为“亲爱的本内特先生”,给人一种太正式化的印象,夫妻之间的谈话更应亲密些;译文五译得比较好些;而在叙述句中,"said his lady to him one day"译文一四五把此译文放在了第一句,其他的则放在原句位置,个人认为放在句首更加贴切。 Mr Bennet replied that he had not."*这句简单的译文七句也各不相同。" But it is,returned she.For Ms Long has just been here, and she told me all about it."*译文"But it is"一至七中,译文二三译为“的确租出去了”;译文三则“可确是租出去了”’译文四则为“但的确已经租出去了”;文五则为“当真租出去了”;译文六与七则译为“确实租出去了”。

On Jane Austen's View of Marriage in Pride and Prejudice written by Zhu Mengxian Abstract: Jane Austen's masterpiece Pride and Prejudice fully embodies her view of marriage. In the following, a brief review is given about her views on marriage by analysing several related articles. Key words: Jane Austen. Pride and Prejudice views of marriage Introduction: Jane Austen humorously described different kinds of marriage relations in Pride and Prejudice. Until today, this novel is still very popular among many readers and arouses people's observation and unlimited thinking of marriage. Review: It has been pointed out that Jane holds the view that love and marriage are associated with but not totally lie on the property and social status, the marriage which is based on the love is a true happy marriage. There are many articles to support this view. For example, one of researchers thought marriage and property and social status are interconnected, but marriage could not only depend on the property and the social status based on researching the four young couples' marriages in this novel which can be categorized into two groups according to their different marriage foundation, Simply one just like Charlotte — Collins and Lydia — Wickham is called unhappy marriage. The other one like Elizabeth —Darcy and Jane —Bingley is the opposite. “ She believed that marriage just for money was wrong, but marriage of no money was stupid.” On the other hand, some papers have reported that Jane attaches great importance to ideal marriage and regards the feelings between men and women as the cornerstone of the ideal marriage. Austen fully expresses her views on love and marriage only by appreciating the marriage founded on the basis of mutual admiration, understanding and mutual respect. In Tang Chunhua’s paper, she considered that “ She believed that a husband not only need have certain number of family property but also must respect women, and at the same time there must be mutual understanding between them.” It happens that there is a similar case, Yu Hongen pointed out that Jane stresses that character is important than appearance in a marriage. “Austen believes that the person’s character is more important than appearance in the matter of a happy marriage.”“They have common in character and mutual appreciation, it is the most solid foundation that they can go into the marriage hall and toward a rational happiness.” At the same time, it emphasizes the independence and dignity of women on the marital problems. Conclusion: During her time, Jane's view was so advanced that it was not accepted widely. Until today, it still has important influence. Austen’s views on marriage and love are also suitable for our real social. We youth should make right marriage and love views to orient our lives. There are a thousand Hamlets in a thousand people’s eyes. In a word, we can find her idea about marriage from the analysis, marriage, property and social status interconnected, but not absolutely. In this term,I read a book which named .The author is Jane Austen,.When I first knew this art work, because I watched the movie acted by Kara Knightly and so many famous stars .But this term I read the original work .And I realize the difference between them . After I briefly knew the author -Jane Austen .About her life ,her experience .I found she was an sensitive, strong in mental ,maverick and independent woman.I do really admire her.In 1775 December she birthed to this world. She has eight brothers and sisters. Her father, who had served in that area for forty years, and he also was a encyclopedic clergyman .And the same her mother ,came from an welfare family, she also had certain cultural accomplishment. Therefore, even though Jane ha dn’t go to the official school, because of the great family condition and the environment of reading books .All of those give her the chances to learn by herself and then build up the interests about writing. When she was only thirteen or fourteen years old,she stared to writing something she liked. This showed her talent about her language expression. In the1800,her father retired, and they moved to somewhere, but Jane didn’t like there. At there,Jane refused the marriage from a teenager who will inherited a larg e fortune, just because she didn’t like him.The gods throw out the questions ,we human need to find ,to choose the answers by ourselves. The answer from this problem is probably not "no" to us now. Although our hearts still have some expectation for love, we believe that love is sacred. But gradually, like wealth, background, politics, more and more things go beyond love, above all else, to our life,to our heart. In 1796 ,at 20 she met Lefroy. She fall in love with this clever young Irish lawyer. Her unforgettable first love was forced to break up,she chose never marry for the whole life, and put the all emotions and feelings devoted to the literary creation. What make me impressively is her attitude to the people ,world, and to herself. The world and people hurt her ,break up she and her lover, make her never marry, but she still keep her mind to the world, put all her love to the literary creation, write the sweet, profound work for the people. To tell them ,among the millions of people in the world, it likes a miracle to meet someone you love who loves you as much as you do. And do not cherish this person is how ignorant and pitiful.A person may be arrogant but not vain.In most cases, pride is nothing more than what we think of ourselves ,but vanity refers to how we v alue other people’s evaluation of us. In fact, there are few people I really like. The more I look at the world, the less satisfied I am, and the more I believe that every day, I believe that all kinds of peo ple are capricious, and that the good things what appeared on the surface are untru stworthy. But then I can't tell you exactly when, where, what kind of style , what kind of talk I heard, which all of those made me fall in love with you gradually. It was
