Part 5 Reading comprehension

Directions: Read the following passages carefully. Each

passage is followed by some questions or unfinished

sentences. For each of them there are four choices marked

A, B, C, and D. Choose the best answer to each question.

Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage or

dialog.

It is very odd that no one is afraid of the word "dance" and

no one would object to the phrase "let's go dancing," but

mention "ballet" and people start complaining. These social

prejudices come from several misconceptions and from

certain historic facts. Ballet is the Western theatrical dance

form that has developed over a period of four centuries. It

has always depended upon government or royal support for

its life. In more modern times, this support came from

wealthy people who attend the ballet in beautiful theaters

in some of the world's great cities. People have, therefore,

come to see ballet as a cultural form.

Over time, Ballet has developed its own language, one that

many ordinary people do not understand. Being a ballet

dancer involves seven years of very difficult training from

an early age, yet anyone can dance at a social gathering,

given a certain amount of effort and desire. The physical

image of both male and female dancers is very stylized, and

costuming is so unnatural in many cases, with its tight

clothes, special slippers, and short skirts. For these

reasons, it is not possible for the general public to have the

kind of identification with a ballet dancer that they often

feel for an actor, film star, or athlete.

It is also strange that a visual art that speaks directly to the

eye, in the same way a soccer game or an Olympic gymnastic contest does, still makes people nervous. Too often people stay away from ballet because they think they will not "understand" it. However, they never seem to find this problem when they watch popular ice dance championships on television. Nor are they afraid to express their opinions and sometimes disagree with judges'

decisions. People enjoy watching sports because they

enjoy its physical daring. They appreciate athletes'

superbly conditioned bodies working at maximum efficiency. If people only looked at dancing – any form of dancing – in the same way they appreciate sports, there would be fewer prejudices to overcome.

1. What is the social prejudice mentioned in the passage?

A. Some people like dancing but not ballet.

B. People don't like ballet if they don't come from a big

city.

C. Ballet has always depended upon government or

royal support.

D. People have come to see ballet as a cultural form.

2. Which of the following statements is true?

A. Many ordinary people understand Ballet.

B. To become a ballet dancer is especially difficult.

C. To become a dancer at a social gathering is equally

difficult.

D. The general public like ballet better than other

actors.

3. What is something strange mentioned by the author?

A. People appreciate sports more than they appreciate

ballet.

B. People understand sports, but they don't

understand ballet.

C. People will enjoy ballet more if they see it as a sport.

D. Ballet that performs the same way as soccer still

scares people.

4. According to the author, why do people enjoy watching

sports?

A. They do not understand ballet.

B. They think sports are more exciting.

C. They love soccer and skating.

D. They can change judges' decisions.

5. What does the author want to say through this

passage?

A. Everyone can enjoy ballet.

B. You can only enjoy ballet if you understand it.

C. Only educated people can enjoy ballet.

D. To enjoy sports is less difficult than enjoy ballet .

Questions 6 to 10 are based on the following passage or

dialog.

Do you ever automatically say "God bless you" when someone sneezes (打喷嚏)? Did you ever cross your fingers when making a wish? Most people who do these things never think about why they do them. They just do them.

But there is a reason. Both acts are meant to insure good luck. They are superstitions that have come down to us from an earlier time, when everybody believed in good and devil spirits. Even in our modern world, when men are traveling to the moon, we are still practicing some of these ancient habits in our daily lives.

In ancient times, men believed that the soul lived in the head. Every time when someone sneezed, he was risking the danger of forcing that soul out and blowing it out of the nose into the outside world. So, as protection against a lost soul, people would say "God bless you" to be sure that God would catch the soul and return it to its rightful owner.

Similarly, in earlier times, men felt that the cross was a lucky sign. The point where the two lines of a cross met was

the luckiest spot, for if you made a wish on this spot, the wish would be held between these two lines and not get loose. So, people crossed their fingers when they made a wish. A wish bound forever in this way would eventually

have to come true.

Moreover, since the evil spirits stood on the left, and the good spirits on the right, the right side was always considered the lucky side of the body. Putting your best foot forward meant starting out on the lucky side, with your right foot first. That was a guarantee of good luck at whatever you were about to do. We still speak of "putting your best foot forward," although we don't always start

walking with the right foot.

Each of these little good-luck habits once had a serious purpose. Although people no longer believe in evil spirits, they are still crossing their fingers or putting their best foot forward – just to be sure that good luck comes their way.

6. To make a wish come true, you should ________.

A. knock on a wood

B. fling salt over your shoulder

C. put your best foot forward

D. cross your fingers

7. To start out on the lucky side, you need to ________.

A. change the habit of starting with your right foot

B. start walking with your right foot

C. put your best foot backward

D. let evil spirits stand on the left

8. It can be inferred from the passage that people

________.

A. no longer believe in superstitions

B. still believe that evil spirits follow them

C. follow superstitions without knowing where they

began

D. think everyday things had magical powers

9. From the passage, we can learn that people thought

________.

A. superstitions were against their religion

B. evil spirits were too smart to be tricked

C. they could do things to be protected from evil spirits

D. evil spirits lived in your head and nose

10. The main idea of the passage is ________.

A. there are reasons behind superstitions

B. superstitions are foolish

C. people still believe in superstitions

D. people today don't have superstitions

Questions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage or

dialog.

Red, white, pink, purple – what is your favorite color? We are all sensitive to color. There are some colors we like a lot and some we don't like at all. Some colors comfort us, others excite us, some make us happy, and others make us sad. People are affected by color more than they realize because color is tied to all aspects of our lives.

Experts in colorgenics, the study of the language of color, believe that the colors we wear say a lot about us. Do you know why you select a shirt or dress of a certain color when you look through your clothes in the morning? Colorgenics experts say that we unconsciously choose to wear certain colors in order to communicate our desires, emotions, and

needs.

Colorgenics experts claim that our clothes send messages to others about our mood, personality, and desires. Pink expresses the peace and contentment of the wearer. People who often wear pink are supposed to be warm and understanding. The message is that you would like to share your peace and happiness with others. Red garments, on the other hand, indicate a high level of physical energy. People who wear red like to take life at a fast pace. Brown is the color of wealth, and it shows a need for independence and material security. Wearers of green have a love of nature and enjoy peaceful moments. They often like to be

left alone with their thoughts.

Although colorgenics may be a recent area of study, associating colors with emotions is not new. Colors have always been used to describe not only our feelings but also our physical health and attitudes. "Red with rage" describes anger; "in the pink" means to be in good health; "feeling blue" is a sad way to feel; and "green with envy"

indicates a jealous attitude.

In conclusion, the study of color can help us to understand ourselves and to improve our lives. It offers an alternative way to heal the body and spirit, and it can help us

understand what others are trying to communicate.

11. Why are people affected by color more than they

realize?

A. Colors make people more sensitive.

B. Colors bring people different feelings.

C. Colors are everywhere in people's lives.

D. Colors give people excitement.

12. According to the passage, ________.

A. people wear different colors to show their feelings.

B. people communicate better when wearing their

favorite colors.

C. people like to wear different colors in the morning.

D. people choose different colors without knowing

they do it purposely.

13. Who want to share peace and happiness?

A. People who wear green clothes.

B. People who wear pink clothes.

C. People who need security and independence.

D. People who like to be left alone with their thoughts.

14. What is implied in the passage?

A. People started to associate colors with emotions

long time ago.

B. How colors show emotions is a new research topic.

C. People wearing different colors usually feel happy.

D. The colors people choose affect their physical

health.

15. How might learning about color be useful in our lives?

A. It helps us to express our ideas more clearly.

B. It helps us to control our emotions and desires.

C. It helps us to feel happier and more excited.

D. It helps us to understand ourselves and others.

Unit1 Americans believe no one stands still. If you are not moving ahead, you are falling behind. This attitude results in a nation of people committed to researching, experimenting and exploring. Time is one of the two elements that Americans save carefully, the other being labor. "We are slaves to nothing but the clock,” it has been said. Time is treated as if it were something almost real. We budget it, save it, waste it, steal it, kill it, cut it, account for it; we also charge for it. It is a precious resource. Many people have a rather acute sense of the shortness of each lifetime. Once the sands have run out of a person’s hourglass, they cannot be replaced. We want every minute to count. A foreigner’s first impression of the U.S. is li kely to be that everyone is in a rush -- often under pressure. City people always appear to be hurrying to get where they are going, restlessly seeking attention in a store, or elbowing others as they try to complete their shopping. Racing through daytime meals is part of the pace

III. 1. rewarding 2. communicate 3. access 4. embarrassing 5. positive 6. commitment 7. virtual 8. benefits 9. minimum 10. opportunities IV. 1. up 2. into 3. from 4. with 5. to 6. up 7. of 8. in 9. for 10.with V. 1.G 2.B 3.E 4.I 5.H 6.K 7.M 8.O 9.F 10.C Sentence Structure VI. 1.

举例来说,杂货店的指示牌会把他们引向stationary(静止处),虽然便笺本、相册、和笔记本等真正的stationery(文具用品)并没有被钉在那儿。朋友和亲人常宣称They've just ate。实际上,他们应该说They've just eaten。
