The God in Youth:Michael Jordan

There were alread signs that he had a good deal of that. Harvest Smith, a classmate and close frend who in those days played basketball with him practically every day, thought he was the bast player on their ninth-grade| team-he was small, but he was very quick. You’d see him get a shot off,and you’d wonder how he did it,because he wasn’t that big, Smith said, but it was the quickness. The only question was how big he was going to be-and how far up he would take his skill level.

The summer after ninth grade, Jord an and Smith both went to Pop Herring’s basketball camp.Neither of them had yet come into his body, and almost all of the varsity(大学代表队)players, two and sometimes three years older, seemed infinitely stronger at that moment when ayear or two in physical de velopment can make all the difference. In Smith’s mind there was no doubt on which of the two of them was the better player-it was Michael by far. But on the day the varsity cuts were announced-it was the big day of the year, for they had all known for weeks when the list would be posted-he and Roy Smith had gone to the Laney gym. Smith’s name was on it, but Michael’s was not It was the worst day of Jordan’s young life. The list was alphabetical, so he focused on where the Js shoud be, and it wasn’t there, and he kept reading and rereading the list, hoping somehow that he had missed it,or that the alphabetical listing had been done incorrectly. That day he went home by himself and went to his room and cried. Smith understood what was happening-Michael,he knew, never wanted you to see him when he was hurt.

“We knew Michael was good,”Fred Lynch, the Laney assistant coach, said later , “but we wanted him to play more and thought the jayvee(大学运动队第二队)was better for him.”He easily became the best player on the jayvee that year. He simply dominated the play, and he did it not by size but with quickness. There were games in which he would score forty point. He was so good,in fact, that the jayvee games became quite popular. The entire varsity began to come early so they could watch him play in the jayvee games.

Smith noticed that while Jordan had been wildly competitive before he had been cut, after the cut he seemed even more competitive than ever,as if determined that it would never happen again. His coaches noticed it ,too. “The first time I ever saw him ,I had no idea who Michael Jordan was.I was helping to coach the Laney varsity.”said Ron Coley. “We went over to Goldsboro, which was our big rival, and I entered the gym when the jayvee game when the jayvee game was just ending up.There were nine players on the count just coasting, but there was one kid playing his heart out.The way he was playing I thought his team was down one point with two minutes to play.So I looked up at the clock and his team was down twenty points and there was only one minute to play.It was Michael ,and I quickly learned he was always like that.”

Between the time he was cut and the start of basketball in his junior year ,Jordan grew about four inches. The speed had always been there ,and now he was stronger, and he could dunk(灌篮).His hands had gotten much

bigger,Smith noticed. He was as driven as ever, the hardest-working player on the team in practice. If he thought that his teammates wew not working hard enough ,he would get on them himself, and on occasion he pushed the coaches to get on them.Suddenly Laney High had begenning of a very good basketball team, and its rising star was Michael Jordan. For questions 1-7,mark Y(for yes),N(for no),NG(for not giving)

Part ⅣReading Comprehension (Reading in Depth) (25%)

Section A

Directions: In this section, there is a passage with ten blanks. You are required to select one word for each blank from a list of choices given in a word bank following the passage. Read the passage through carefully before making your choices. Each choice in the bank is identified by a letter. Please mark the corresponding letter for each item on Answer Sheet 2 with a single line through the centre. You may not use any of the words in the bank more than once.

Questions 47 to 56 are based on the following passage.

One study compared four 47 , aged 18-30, 31-48, 49-62, and 63 and over.

Several questions were asked to tap into basic beliefs and values, such as "Hard work is the key to getting ahead" and "America is the very best place in the world to live in".

Across the generations, there was great 48 in the responses.

Many studies on youth also refute the concept of a generation gap.

These studies show that while young people tend to value their peers' 49 over parents’ on things like music, clothing and what's "cool", they continue to look to parents for basic values and guidance in the more important areas of life, such as 50 and lifetime goals.

Of course, general trends can't always be 51 to 52 cases.

It is natural to feel like there is an 53 "gap" between our teens and us and that there is a need to bridge it.

54 , though, the problem does not lie in a difference of opinions or values, but in the way we relate to and communicate with each other.

Here are some tips from an article entitled "Bridging the Generation Gap" that might help.

Show respect.

An attitude of respect and trust can be 55 .

Young people tend to see themselves the way their parents see them.

In turn, they gain self-confidence and respect for themselves when you show that you respect their ability to make decisions and learn from their mistakes.

Listen more than you talk.

56 can sound like interrogation.

Instead, adopt an attitude of curiosity rather than control.

Ask questions like "How so?" "What do you think now?" "Were you surprised?" "What will you do now?" "What's your plan?" "Is this something you want help with?"

If your object is only to listen, you should be careful not to be your response while your teen is still talking.

You'll hear better that way, and they will be encouraged to talk more.

Ask whether your child wants to hear it before sharing your point of view.

Section B

Directions: There are 2 passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked [A], [B], [C] and [D]. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2 with a single line through the centre.

Passage One

Questions 57 to 61 are based on the following passage.

It was half past seven before I reached the hotel, which was in a quiet street opposite a church. The manageress was a stern lady of about sixty. She showed me to my room herself because there was no porter(旅馆服务员). When I asked her about dinner, she said there was only one sitting, at six-thirty, and I had missed it.

“Never mind, ” I said. “I’ll just have a drink in the bar and then go to a restaurant.”

“Bar!” she said, raising her eyebrows. “This is a respectable hotel, young man. If you want alcohol you must go somewhere else.” She spoke as if a glass of beer were a dangerous drug.

I had dinner in a restaurant and noticed there was a good film in the local cinema. When I returned the hotel, it was half past eleven. Everything was in dark. I banged on the door but nothing happened. Eventually a window opened upstairs and the old lady looked out. I made her understand who I was and she let me in after ten minutes’ wait. She was in her nightdress and her hair was in curlers. “Guests are to be back by eleven o’clock,” she said. “The same rule goes for every one.”

I went to my room and tried to sleep. The bed was hard and the sheets were damp. Every quarter of an hour the clock struck and at midnight the whole hotel shook with the noise. Just before dawn, I finally got off to sleep.

When I arrived at breakfast, everyone else had nearly finished and there was not enough coffee to go round.

“Did you have a comfortable night’s rest?” the old lady asked.

“To tell the truth, I don’t think I could go through another night in the room,” I replied. “I hardly slept at all.”

“That’s because you were up all night drinking alcohol,” she said disappointedly, putting an end to the conversation.

C) a bad night a guest spent in a small hotel D) a hotel which gave poor service to its guests

Passage Two

Questions 62 to 66 are based on the following passage.

By almost any measure, there is a boom in Internet-based instruction. In just a few years, 34 percent of American universities have begun offering some form of distance learning (DL), and among the lar ger schools, it’s closer to 90 percent. If you doubt the popularity of the trend, you probably haven’t heard of the University of Phoenix. It grants degrees entirely on the basis of online instruction. It enrolls 90,000 students, a statistic used to support its claim to be the largest private university in the country.

While the kinds of instruction offered in these programs will differ, DL usually signifies a course in which the instructors post syllabi (课程大纲), reading assignments, and schedules on Websites, and students send in their assignments by e-mail. Generally speaking, face-to-face communication with an instructor is minimized or eliminated altogether.

The attraction for students might at first seem obvious. Primarily, there’s the convenience promis ed by courses on the Net: you can do the work, as they say, in your pajamas (睡衣). But figures indicate that the reduced effort results in a reduced commitment to the course. While drop-out rates for all freshmen at American universities is around 20 percent, the rate for online students is 35 percent. Students themselves seem to understand the weaknesses inherent in the setup. In a survey conducted for eCornell, the DL division of Cornell University, less than a third of the respondents expected the quality of the online course to be as good as the classroom course.

Clearly, from the schools’ perspective, there’s a lot of money to be saved. Although some of the more ambitious programs require new investments in servers and networks to support collaborative software, most DL courses can run on existing or minimally upgraded (升级) systems. The more students who enroll in a course but don’t come to campus, the more the school saves on keeping the lights on in the classrooms, paying doorkeepers, and maintaining parking lots. And, while there’s evidence that instructors must work harder to run a DL course for a variety of reasons, they won’t be paid any more, and might well be paid less.

62.What is the most striking feature of the University of Phoenix?

A) It boasts the largest number of students on campus. B) All its courses are offered online.

C) Its online courses are of the best quality. D) Anyone taking its online courses is sure to get a

degree.

63. According to the passage, distance learning is basically characterized by

A) a minimum or total absence of face-to-face instruction

B) a considerable flexibility in its academic requirements

C) the great diversity of students’ academic backgrounds

D) the casual relationship between students and professors

64. Many students take Internet-based courses mainly because they can

A) save a great deal on traveling and boarding expenses

B) select courses from various colleges and universities

C) work on the required courses whenever and wherever

D) earn their academic degrees with much less effort

65. What accounts for the high drop-out rates for online students?

A) There is no mechanism to ensure that they make the required effort.

B) There is no strict control over the academic standards of the courses.

C) The evaluation system used by online universities is inherently weak.

D) Lack of classroom interaction reduces the effectiveness of instruction.

66. According to the passage, universities show great enthusiasm for DL programs for the purpose of

A) building up their reputation B) upgrading their teaching facilities

C) providing convenience for students D) cutting down on their expenses

Part V Cloze(10%)

Directions: There are 20 blanks in the following passage. For each blank there are four choices marked A),

B), C) and D) on the right side of the paper. You should choose the ONE that best fits into the passage.

It's amazing how many people she has (77) on the job.

(78), the network began helping hair stylists throughout the southeast (79) up similar programs in their shops.

The hair stylists are also valuable resources in spreading information to their schools, community groups, and churches. The organization has developed (80) techniques useful to other groups doing similar (81).

While no one way of winning the war against AIDS exists, the network shares these lessons learned in its battle against AIDS: Speak to your community in a way they can hear.

Many communities have (82) low literacy rate, making impossible passing out AIDS literature and expecting people to read it.

To solve this problem, ask people in the community who can draw well to create low-literacy AIDS education publications.

These books use simple, hand-drawn pictures of "sad faces" and "happy faces" to (83) ways people can prevent AIDS .

They also show people who look like those we need to educate, since people can relate more when they see familiar faces and language they can understand.

As a result, such books actually have(84) effect in the communities where they are used than government publications, which cost thousands of dollars more to produce.

Train teenagers to educate their peers.

Because AIDS is spreading (85) among teenagers in the rural South, the stylists have (86) an "AIDS Busters" program which trains youth from 8 to 26 to go into the community and teach "AIDS 101" to their peers.
