《美国基础教育简介》长句汉译实践报告

Abstract

China has been studying foreign education since the reform and opening up,in which the most prominent one is the study of American education.This report chooses the book“Introduction to the Foundations of American Education”as translation text.It is written by five educators:James A.John,Victoria I.Dupuis, Dean Muchar,Jean E.Hall,Donna M.Guernica.In this book,educational issues in complex systems of institutions,norms,beliefs,social mores,laws and instructional and assessment practices have been discussed,which helps educators to find the root cause of problems in multiple perspectives and explore educational problems through questions.

The third chapter,a total of13414words,has been chosen as the translation text. This chapter is written by Kate Zernike,a correspondent of New York Times,who focuses on exploring educational problems.In this chapter,the problems of ethnic diversity education,adolescent education and school democratization have been comprehensively discussed.These issues are very common and representative in the education area and the author has a wide range of views and opinions.All the discussion can provide strategies for students to improve their study methods and offer practical suggestion for educators to address educational problems.Therefore, this chapter can be consulted as a reference for Chinese educators in solving educational problems such as:ethnic education,narrowing the education gap,child care and adolescent cultivation.It can be seen from this chapter that American scholars tend to link education to the further development of the country.Thus,this chapter has been selected as the translation practice text.

This section has the professional and scientific characteristics of a general academic text,and in order to reflect these two characteristics it is composed by long and complicated sentences.The long sentence contains more information,which makes it difficult to translate the text from both semantic and structural aspects.In order to solve the problem and translate long sentences in this chapter accurately,the relevant technique has been selected as the main topic to be discussed in this report. And the author divide the problem in this book into three types:simple long sentences problem,complex long sentences problem and compound long sentences problem. The solution strategies are:sequencing,reversing,splitting,and recasting.The experience and deficiencies of this translation practice have also been summarized in this report.
