第一部分课程性质与目标

一、课程性质与特点

商务英语阅读课程是湖北省高等教育自学考试商务英语(专科)的一门专业基础课。本课程以当代英语国家的原版教材、英语报纸、杂志和学术刊物中与经济和商务有关的文章为基础,材料内容涉及商贸英语的主要领域,如经济学、国际贸易、市场营销、企业管理、投资、证券、保险、广告等。本课程是一门理论联系实际,应用性较强的课程。

二、课程目标与基本要求

通过本课程的学习,学生既可学到地道的英语(包括大量的专业术语),又可以学到对外经济贸易知识,同时也能够掌握商务报刊文章的基本特点,提高阅读和分析能力,最终从整体上提高商贸英语语言水平以及语言欣赏和运用能力,达到商务英语专业专科生水平。三、与本专业其他课程的关系

商务英语阅读课程与商务英语口语、综合英语等课程同属于专业基础课,是商务英语写作、商务英语翻译、商务英语函电等课程的先修课程。

一、考核的能力层次表述

本大纲在考核目标中,按照“识记”、“理解”、“应用”三个能力层次规定其应达到的能力层次要求。各能力层次为递进等级关系,后者必须建立在前者的基础上,其含义是:识记:能知道有关的名词、概念、知识的含义,并能正确认识和表述,是低层次的要求。

三、自学方法指导

1、在开始阅读指定教材某一章之前,先翻阅大纲中有关这一章的考核知识点及对知识点的能力层次要求和考核目标,以便在阅读教材时做到心中有数,有的放矢。

2、阅读教材时,要逐段细读,逐句推敲,集中精力,吃透每一个知识点,对基本概念必须深刻理解,对基本理论必须彻底弄清,对基本方法必须牢固掌握。

3、在自学过程中,既要思考问题,也要做好阅读笔记,把教材中的基本概念、原理、方法等加以整理,这可从中加深对问题的认知、理解和记忆,以利于突出重点,并涵盖整个内容,可以不断提高自学能力。

4、完成书后作业和适当的辅导练习是理解、消化和巩固所学知识,培养分析问题、解决问题及提高能力的重要环节,在做练习之前,应认真阅读教材,按考核目标所要求的不同层次,掌握教材内容,在练习过程中对所学知识进行合理的回顾与发挥,注重理论联系实际和具体问题具体分析,解题时应注意培养逻辑性,针对问题围绕相关知识点进行层次(步骤)分明的论述或推导,明确各层次(步骤)间的逻辑关系。

1、本大纲各章所提到的内容和考核目标都是考试内容。试题覆盖到章,适当突出重点。

2、试卷中对不同能力层次的试题比例大致是:"识记"为30%、"理解"为40%、"应用"为30%。

3、试题难易程度应合理:易、较易、较难、难比例为2:3:3:2。

4、每份试卷中,各类考核点所占比例约为:重点占65%,次重点占25%,一般占10%。

(一)阅读理解Reading comprehension.

Although it is nothing new for companies to build relationships with customers, it has

generally been done on a one-to-one basis. In recent years, however, technological developments have made it possible to build up individual relationships with clients on a much larger scale, and this more sophisticated kind of operation is known as relationship marketing. Relationship marketing aims to increase sales through deliberate efforts to retain customers and promote two-way communication with them and new technology has make communication possible with a for larger customer base than before. The information gathered forms the basis of highly technical analyses of customer purchasing and profitability, which can be used to increase sales.

The building of good personal relationships with customers is usually integral to the management of small businesses, and owners of small corner shops clearly illustrate the essence of relationship marketing, although the technology available to them is far less advanced than that available to, say, a supermarket chain. Small shopkeepers have direct knowledge of regular customers and become familiar with their needs, likes and dislikes. The shopkeepers can then provide services tailored to individual needs. Over time, a bond of loyalty is likely to develop between shopkeepers and regular customers.

The benefits of relationship marketing enjoyed by small businesses are now available to big businesses, thanks to a number of developments. First and foremost is the increasing recognition of the importance of profitability of retaining existing customers. Secondly, technologies have been developed which enable the collection, manipulation and analysis of huge banks of customer information. Large retailers can use store cards to obtain detailed background information about customer’s ages, salaries and lifestyles, and point-of-sale technology can be sued to track purchases made by every customer. Electronic storage enables all of this information to be retained, manipulated and integrated, while detailed analyses can be carried out on ever more powerful computers. Companies are thus able to target individuals amongst their thousands of customers with unique promotions or information matched to their back grounds and to their purchasing tendencies. Thirdly, companies feel a need to use relationship marketing because of increased competition: amassing knowledge about customers and building up customer relationships through interactive contact can enable organizations to differentiate their products or services more easily form those of competitors.

However, relationship marketing is not always the right route for organizations to take, and is not appropriate for all customers. Some bank customers, for example, cost more to serve than the bank actually makes form their custom, while a supermarket customer who spends very little and does not shop regularly does not justify the expenditure of several pounds per annum on relationship marketing. In addition, customers may not always be interested in a relationship, even where there are demonstrable benefits to be had.

Overall, successful relationship marketing depends upon selecting and targeting the customers you wish to retain, and identifying sales areas where the investment and effort will be worthwhile. Many organizations have found the approach to be very rewarding in terms of customer retention and related profitability, but relationship marketing is still a developing field and is neither cheap nor easy to operate. It involves an integrative approach which draws marketing, quality and customer service together; it also depends upon developing the capacity of every employee particularly front-line staff to market the goods or services of the organization in a customer-focused way; and finally, it can require heavy investment in appropriate information technology.

(二)快速阅读Skimming and scanning.

There are various ways in which individual economic units can interact with one another. Three basic ways may be described as the market system, the administered system, and the traditional system.

In a market system individual economic units are free to interact among each other in the marketplace. It is possible to buy commodities from other economic units or sell commodities to them. In a market, transactions may take place via barter or money exchange. In a barter economy, real goods such as automobiles, shoes, and pizzas are traded against each other. Obviously, finding somebody who wants to trade my old car in exchange for a sailboat may not always be an easy task. Hence, the introduction of money as a medium of exchange eases transactions considerably. In the modern market economy, goods and services are bought or sold for money.

An alternative to the market system is administrative control by some agency over all transactions. This agency will issue edicts or commands as to how much of each good and service should be produced, exchanged, and consumed by each economic unit. Central planning may be one way of administering such an economy. The central plan, drawn up by the government, shows the amounts of each commodity produced by the various firms and allocated to different households for consumption. This is an example of complete planning of production, consumption, and exchange for the whole economy.

In a traditional society, production and consumption patterns are governed by tradition; every person’s place within the economic system is fixed by parentage, religion, and custom. Transactions take place on the basis of tradition, too. People belonging to a certain group or caste may have an obligation to care for other persons, provide them with food and shelter, care for their health, and provide for their education. Clearly, in a system where every decision is made on the basis of tradition alone, progress may be difficult to achieve. A stagnant society may result.

第2单元 出口、进口与对等贸易 辨认出口机会 出口面临的一个最大障碍就是信息的匮乏。通常一个公司的产品会有许多需求市场,不过由于许多需求市场都不在本国,基于文化、语言、距离以及时间的不同,公司很难找到这些需求市场。事实上全世界有180多个国家,各个国家之间又有很大的文化差异,这些使得辨认出口机会更加困难了。面对这样复杂以及多样化的市场,企业很多时候在寻找出口伙伴时显得优柔寡断也就不足为奇了。 国际比较 克服出口信息不对称的办法就是尽可能的搜集信息。我们先以德国为例。德国有一些贸易协会、政府代理商以及商业银行为企业牵线搭桥,帮一些小公司寻找出口机会。日本也有类似这样的商业机构,譬如日本国际工商业会社,总是积极地帮出口商寻找出口机会。此外,日本许多公司都是综合商社的分公司。综合商社是日本特有的综合贸易公司,由于办事处遍布全世界,它能够积极不断地为大大小小的分公司提供各种出口信息。日本、德国公司的一个最大优势就是能够为他们的出口企业搜集到世界各地的技术经验、出口信息以及其他资源。 与德国、日本那些竞争对手相比,美国的许多企业在寻找出口机会时就显得有些盲目,在信息搜集上处于劣势。这种差异一部分是历史上的原因。长期以来日本、德国都把对外贸易作为支柱产业,而美国一直到近期还是一个相对自给型的国家,对外贸易在美国经济当中只占据很小的一部分。虽然近两年美国对外贸易在国内经济当中的分量比20年前重了许多,然而美国依然没有一个类似于日本或者德国那样的商业机构帮助出口企业搜集信息。 信息来源 尽管美国处于劣势,美国企业也在不断提高搜寻出口机会的意识。美国商务部及其在全国各地的办公室是美国最大的出口信息源,其下属的两个独立机构——国际贸易局、美国对外商业服务中心都致力于为企业提供智力援助并且积极地帮助企业拓展海外市场。 他们为潜在出口商提供一份“光辉前程”名单,名单上列出了某种行业海外市场潜在经销商的名称、地址及联系方式。此外,美国商务部专门成立了一个针对海外14个主要出口市场的“比较购物服务”中心。企业缴纳很少的费用就可以获得一份某产品目标市场的顾客调查报告,报告不仅提供该产品海外市场的可销售性,而且对竞争者、比较价格、营销渠道以及可能的销售代表人员都作了详尽的描述。调查报告是由美国商务部的官员进行实地考察而得出的。 商务部还会组织一些贸易活动帮助潜在出口商与外界接触,拓展海外市场。在一些大城市举办的国际贸易展览会上,美国商务部也会组织出口企业参展。另外,美国

Business English reading I have learned a lot in the Business English Reading classes. This course mainly analyses business stratages during the development of some famous companies, and introduces some main influencial factors. We talked about P&G Company at the very beginning. P&G is a well-known and successful company all over the world. It produces various products of different brands, for example VS, Pantene, OLAY, Crest, Pampers, Safeguard, Tide, Whisper and Gilllete and so on. These products are trusted generally by consumers and used almost in each family. P&G is a successful example in the same kind of company absolutely. However, it is not easy to gain the big success. It has ever been in danger of becoming another Eastman Kodak Co., a once great company that had lost its way. Thank to Lafley, the current CEO, taking some effective measures, the P&G could get through the trouble. Different with the former CEO, the first thing he told his managers when he took the job was just what they were thinking: focus on selling the company’s major brands, instead of trying to develop new brands. He has replaced more than half of the company’s top 30 officers and cut 9,600 jobs. And he has move more women into senior positions. He wants a focused, flexible company, that’s why he does all the things. To reach this goal, he has adopted the policy of outsourcing: he outsourced P&G’s information-technology operation to Hewlett Packard Co.. As to sales, Lafley suggests that they should remain the biggest retailer Wal-Mart stores, and develop more wholesalers to promote sales quotas. All these correct decisions owe to Lafley’s significant cognition and well preparation. Of course, there are many other successful examples. Too much factors can have effects on a company’s destiny.Of all the factors, the most important is the ability of leadership in management and decision making. Leadership includes the top leaders, CEO or president or general manager, and managers of each department. These leaders can be regarded as the main body of a company, so the quality of the body directly influences the whole company’s development. Every department has its own responsibility, only all departments work well can the whole company goes well. No matter what happened, capable leaders always catch up with proper methods to solve those problems to keep company running normally. Although sometimes it may be suffer a big shock, like economic crisis, good leadership must be able to negotiate a countermeature to avoid loss or reduce loss. This’s the most important function of leaders. Therefore, if we want to know whether a company can go further or not, we just need to realize what kind of leadershis it has. In my opinion, if a company wants to become a success, it should have the following points: first, it is based on quality-reliable products; second, it should win a good credit by considerate service and reasonable products price; third, keep communicating with consumers in order to know what the product that consumers really want is; forth, it should have an outstanding leading group to manage the company. For this reason, I think P&G is really an example of success.
