Part II Reading Comprehension (35 minutes, 30 %)

Directions:Read the following passages and choose the best answer to each of the questions following the passage.

Questions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage:

Why do students cut classes so frequently? I can cite the immediate causes, but I first want to note that they can cut because they are allowed to. They cut because of the climate of acceptance that comes from our belief that responsibility can be developed only when one is free, free even to act against personal best interests. That that is a misapplied belief in this case can be easily demonstrated. When substantial numbers of students do not attend, classroom learning is depreciated (贬低), student and teacher morale suffers, and academic standards are compromised. Students who miss classes unnecessarily are hurting more than themselves. They are undermining what colleges and universities are all about.

Students cut for two general reasons. They have things to do that appear more important than the class, or they wish to avoid what they fear will be painful consequences if they attend. In regard to the first, nursing an illness or attending family weddings are good excuses for missing a class. But other excuses—the demands of outside jobs, social engagements (including recovering from the night before), completing assignments for other courses—are, at best, questionable.

The other general reason is more disturbing and perhaps less well recognized. A few years ago, I asked several classes what they most disliked about the way courses were taught, and the answer was plain—anything that produced sustained tension or anxiety. I believe cutting is often a result of that aversion. The response of students to feelings of personal inadequacy, fear of humiliation, or a threatening professorial personality or teaching style is often simply to avoid class. This response feeds on itself, as frequent absences make attending even more threatening.

But what accounts for frequent cutting where the teacher tries to make the material interesting, knows the students by name, and approaches them with respect and help? I accept that questions as unanswerable. I simply tell my students: Attend my classes regularly or drop the course. That’s the rule.

21. The word “that” (Line 4, Para. 1) refers to __________.

A) the immediate causes of the students’ absence from classes

B) the author’s belief that students are permitted to cut classes

C) teachers’ tolerance of the students who rarely show up in the classroom

D) the belief that freedom is essential in cultivating a sense of responsibility

22. Why do university students so often miss classes?

A) They are advised to rest until they recover from their illnesses.

B) They want to avoid painful feelings brought by the professors.

C) The inadequate allowances they get force them to take part-time jobs.

D) They think the teaching qualifications of the professors are open to question.

23. The word “aversion” (Line 4, Para.3) means __________.

A) response B) dislike

C) excuse D) plainness

24. What is the result of the students’ frequent cutting?

A) They are likely to avoid more classes.

B) They have to lower their academic standards.

C) They are involved in more social activities.

D) They attach less importance to classroom learning.

25. What is the author’s attitude towards students who often cut classes?

A) Indifferent. B) Regretful.

C) Negative. D) Cautious.

Questions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage:

A subject which seems to have been insufficiently studied by doctors and psychologists is the influence of geography and climate on the psychological and physical health of humankind. There seems no doubt that the general character of landscape, the relative length of day and night, and climate must all play a part in determining what kind of people we are.

It is true that a few studies have been made. Where all the inhabitants of a particular area enjoy exceptionally good or bad health, scientists have identified contributory factors such as the presence or absence of substances like iodine, fluoride, calcium, or iron in the water supply, or perhaps types of land that provide breeding places for pests like mosquitoes or rats.

Moreover, we can all generalize about types of people we have met. Those living in countries with long dark winters are apt to be less talkative and less lively than inhabitants of countries where the climate is more equable. And where olives and oranges grow, the inhabitants are cheerful, talkative, and casual.

But these commonplace generalizations are inadequate: the influence of climate and geography should be studied in depth. Do all mountain dwellers live to a ripe old age? Does the drinking of wine, rather than beer, result in a sunny and open character? Is the strength and height of a Kenyan tribe due to their habitual drinking of the cow blood?

We are not yet sure of the answers to such questions, but let us hope that something beneficial to humankind may eventually result from such studies.

26. The passage mainly discusses __________.

A) the importance of environmental protection

B) the influence of geographical environment

C) different ways to keep healthy

D) the psychological and physical health of humankind

27. We may infer that “iodine, fluoride, calcium,...” (Para. 2) are __________.

A) substances which act positively or negatively on human health

B) harmful substances in the water supply

C) substances which help provide breeding places for pests

D) substances contributory to the height and strength of a person

28. From Paragraph 3 we know that geography and climate play an important role in determining

the inhabitants’ __________.

A) health condition

B) life-span

C) social habits

D) diet

29. According to the author, research into the influence of geography and climate should

__________.

A) focus on some unknown aspects

B) be pursued on a larger scale

C) be carried out among remote tribes

D) be more in depth

30. The author hopes that the studies mentioned in the passage will enable us to __________.

A) generalise better about types of people in the world

B) find better water supplies for inhabitants in some dry areas

C) gain insight into the influence of geographical environment on humankind

D) live to a ripe old age just like those mountain dwellers

Questions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage:

Are you ready for your Avril Lavigne (American pop singer) mobile phone? Cellphone companies are developing a new wireless phone featuring an “intelligent”faceplate. Subscribers will be able to personalize the look of their phone, and get theme-related ring tones, games and video clips.

Korean handset manufacturer Curitel and US software company Wildseed are partnering to launch a new wireless phone aimed at music-loving, fashion-conscious teens.

The main appeal of the phone, named “Onyx”, is its “Smart Skin”faceplate. It also has a built-in camera, FM radio, games and Web links that all relate to a particular theme.

The faceplate on the phone, which contains about 10 times more memory than an average mobile, is changeable. An Avril Lavigne phone, for example, has a photo of the teen pop star on the faceplate, with software that shows an Avril screensaver. There are also clips from her latest video, concert ticket information and links to her favorite Websites.

Curitel expects the handsets, which use the GSM phone network, to be available in US retail stores in early 2004, and later throughout the world. Different colored faceplates could be worth US $1 billion in annual sales worldwide. With the new faceplates, Wildseed hopes to change the way the wireless phone industry sells to the MTV audience.

Some phone carriers are in a competitive money-losing spiral of offering customers free

monthly minutes. So, the additional income from downloads is crucial. As adult subscriptions reach their maximum limit, wireless phone carriers are hot for the young people.

Targeting young customers is necessary because it is the only market that shows significant interest in using wireless phones for more than just talking. Text-messaging has proven to be an important feature for teens.

The price of the new phones is likely to be a little less than US $200. Teenagers are an unpredictable market, but analysts said the new phones could tap into the youthful desire to personalize their favorite products.

31. According to the passage, the new wireless phone is characterized by __________.

A) a built-in camera

B) video games

C) a smart faceplate

D) theme-related ring tones

32. The example of an Avril Lavigne phone is given to illustrate that __________.

A) music-loving and fashionable teenagers are its target customers

B) the functions of current mobile phones are very changeable

C) its price is not very high concerning its various functions

D) the new wireless phone has a bigger memory than the average one

33. Which of the following statements is TRUE?

A) Curitel hopes that the handsets will use the GSM phone network.

B) The wireless phone is expected to change its way of selling products.

C) The annual sales of cellphones will amount to US $1 billion in 2004.

D) Avril Lavigne phone will be popular throughout the world quickly.

34. What can you infer about some phone carriers from the passage?

A) They are faced with intense competition in the market now.

B) They want to get additional download profit from teenagers.

C) They try to expand the sales of phones among adult users.

D) They provide some free minutes for the young people.

35. The passage implies that __________.

A) text-messaging has been a significant source of profit for phone carriers

B) young people show interest in other aspects of wireless phone except talking

C) the price of a new wireless phone appeals more to teenagers than adults

D) wireless phone companies are confident of the prospect of youth market

Questions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage.

In only two decades Asian Americans have become the fastest-growing U.S. minority (少数民族). As their children began moving up through the nation's schools, it became clear that a new class of academic achievers was emerging. Their achievements are reflected in the nation's best universities, where mathematics, science and engineering departments have taken on a decidedly Asian character. This special liking for mathematics and science is partly explained by the fact that Asian-American students who began their educations abroad arrived in the U.S. with a solid grounding in mathematics but little or no knowledge of English. They are also influenced by the promise of a good job after college. Asians feel there will be less unfair treatment in areas like mathematics and science because they will be judged more objectively. And the return on the investment in education is more immediate in something like engineering than with an arts degree.

Most Asian-American students owe their success to the influence of parents who are determined that their children take full advantage of what the American educational system has to

offer. An effective measure of parental attention is homework. Asian parents spend more time with their children than American parents do, and it helps. Many researchers also believe there is something in Asian Culture that breeds success, such ideals that stress family values and emphasize education.

Both explanations for academic success worry Asian Americans because of fears that they feed a typical racial (种族的) image. Many can remember when Chinese, Japanese and Filipino immigrants (移民) were the victims of social isolation. Indeed, it was not until 1952 that laws were laid down giving all Asian immigrants the right to citizenship.

36. While making tremendous achievements at college, Asian-American students ___.

A. feel they are mistreated because of limited knowledge of English

B. are afraid that their academic successes bear a strong Asian character

C. still worry about unfair treatment in society

D. generally feel it a shame to have to depend on their parents

37. What are the major factors that determine the success of Asian Americans?

A. A solid foundation in basic mathematics and Asian Americans?

B. Hard work and intelligence.

C. Parental help and a limited knowledge of English.

D. Asian culture and the American educational system.

38. Few Asian-American students major in human sciences mainly because ______.

A. their English is not good enough

B. they are afraid they might meet with unfair judgment in these areas

C. there is a wide difference between Asian and Western cultures

D. they know little about American cultures and Western cultures

39. Why do the two "explanations" (Para. 3, Line 1) worry Asian Americans?

A. They are afraid that they would again be isolated from American society in general.

B. People would think that Asian students rely on their parents for success.

C. Asian American would be a threat to other minorities.

D. American academic achievements have taken on too strong an Asian character.

Job hunting has always been a headache for college students. Though many graduates are employed right after graduation, some are not. Most serious of all, some still have no idea where to go working even a long time after graduation.

The reasons for this phenomenon are various. On the one hand, a few years ago colleges and universities enrolled so many students in popular majors, such as economy, finance and so on that the number of graduates was greater than the need in the market. On the other hand, most graduates would rather stay in large cities without suitable job to do than go to the country.

I reckon this problem can be solved if both colleges and students take measures. First, they should research the market and develop special skills to suit its need. Second, students’ attitude towards employment should be changed. They should go to small cities and country. There they can also give full play to their professional knowledge. In a word, if we pay much attention, the situation can be improved.

It has been a widespread belief that the American family is dying. But a new study reveals that the American family is stronger than ever. This study affords surprising evidence of the persistence of American commitments to family life. The American family is changing, not dying. It is becoming smaller, men and women are becoming more equal, and the divorce rate is higher. But despite the high divorce rate, marriage has never been more popular. The majority of divorced people remarry, but only2%marry more than twice. Most marriages last a long time, and a large proportion of divorces are from teenage marriages.Depending on the specific situation, there’s often good reason for teenage marriages to break up. There is no evidence that children receive less attention from mothers who work outside the home than from mothers working inside the home.So far the amount of educational or development time hasn’t varied very much, whether or not the mother works outside the home.In fact, working mothers try to make up for it by setting aside time only for their children. The study shows that television is by far the most significant new childcare arrangement of this century. The most important activity for children up to age14is watching television. School is the second most time-consuming activity for children. They spend an average of about19hours a week in school.A larger proportion of children go to school earlier than ever before, and they stay in school longer.Another big change is that the proportion of very young children in daycare centers(日托站)has almost doubled in recent https://www.360docs.net/doc/7410171373.html,pared with these two dramatic changes in child activity, the changes caused by mothers working outside the home appear very small. 1The main idea of this article is that_______.

Part I. Reading Comprehension (40%) Directions:Read the following passages and choose the best answer to each of the questions or incomplete statements following the passage. You must read the four choices marked A, B, C and D, and decide which is the best answer. Then mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center. (2’×20) Passage 1 Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage. The majority of divorced people remarry, but only 2% marry more than twice. Most marriages last a long time, and a large proportion of divorces are from teenage marriages. Depending on the specific situation, there’s often good reason for teenage marriages to break up. There is no evidence that children receive less attention from mothers who work outside the home than from mothers working inside the home. So far the amount of educational or development time hasn’t varied very much, whether or not the mother works outside the home. In fact, working mothers try to make up for it by setting aside time only for their children. The study shows that television is by far the most significant new childcare arrangement of this century. The most important activity for children up to age 14 is watching television. School is the second most time-consuming activity for children. They spend an average of about 19 hours a week in school. A larger proportion of children go to school earlier than ever before, and they stay in school longer. Another big change is that the proportion of very young children in daycare centers (日托站) has almost doubled in recent years. Compared with these two dramatic changes in child activity, the changes caused by mothers working outside the home appear very small. 1 The main idea of this article is that _______. A. the American family is dying B. young people today don’t want to get married C. the American family is changing, but it is stronger than ever D. education has resulted in dramatic changes in the American family 2 Which of the following statements is NOT true? A. Marriage is more popular than before. B. Many divorced people remarry. C. The majority of marriages last long. D. Working mothers devote less time to their children.

大学英语口语考试参考范例

Do you think “we all have a responsibility to be safe”? There is no denying that safety plays an important part in our daily life. Recently our school has carried out a program aiming at increasing our safety awareness. I consider this as indeed a good practice, which will remind us that safety should always come first in our daily life, whether when we stay at school or outside it. For example, when we are doing sports, we should attach great importance to safety and avoid being hurt. Besides, we should follow the traffic rules when we are going to school or when we are on our way back home. I firmly believe that we should develop a good sense of safety and do everything safely. What measures have been taken to prevent driving infractions like drunk driving and speeding in China? Driving infractions cases have been increasing and have caused numerous deaths. A more severe punishment should be given to those who drive after they have drunk, especially to those who are drunk and have caused serious injuries or deaths while driving. In order to crack downdriving infractions, the government should introduce a more severe law. Besides, more measures should be taken to cultivate the drivers’ awareness of traffic laws and respect others’ lives as well as their own when they are driving on the road, which I think should be the key to decrease drunken driving cases. Can you tell us how to escape a fire, esp. when you are in a high-rise building? As we know, no one knows for sure when a fire will happen, so it is extremely necessary to make preparations before a fire starts. To beginwith, checking the fire escape in advance and make sure that you can find it when lights have failed. What’s more, taking care not to be overcome by smoke, which containing monoxide gas, can kill you quickly. At last, cover your mouth with a wet towel or a wet cloth, and avoid getting into the smoke. In short, if you make preparations before and take precautions during the fire, chances are that you will survive in case of a fire if it really breaks out some day. What are the things you have to defend yourself so that you can have a peaceful and wonderful life?
