There is one language used in every country in the world. It is ev erybody’s second language. It is easy to understand, although you can’t hear it. It is sign language.

For example, when you wave to a friend who is across the street, you are using sign language. When you smile at someone, you are saying, “I want to be friendly”, but you are not using speech. You are using sign language. When you raise your hand in class,

you are saying, “Please ask me. I think I know the correct answer.” A policeman is using sign language when he holds up his hands to stop traffic. Even a baby can use sign language when she points at things that she wants.

Many years ago, a French priest（牧师）called Charles Michel invented a finger alphabet（字母表）for deaf people. It is still in use. People can make the sign for letters and spell words with their hands, and deaf people can read and understand them. Soon there were schools for the deaf in many countries. I left secondary school in New Zealand when I was 17 years old.

I had no idea of what to do with my life. In Western countries, many students like to take a ‘gap year’. It means during the time, a student may travel and work before he begins university. Some

people think that it is a good idea, as the students can see more of the world around them in order to help them decide what they want to do exactly.

So I decided to take a gap year too. I travelled around New Zealand with my friends. We lived in Queenstown for the winter. It is very famous for its mountains and winter snow. My friends and I went snowboarding every day! We also did a lot of other outdoor activities, such as hiking.

I was having so much fun, so my gap year turned into two years. Then I started to think about my future. One by one, my friends started to go to university. I thought I’d better go there as well.

One of my mother’s friends was a schoolteacher. She persuaded me to be a teacher and told me what to do step by step. I didn’t know if I could control a class. But as I thought more, I was more likely to be a teacher. Later, I applied to the University of

Auckland and was accepted to do an education degree.

Halfway through my degree, I visited Hong Kong during my summer holidays. I was amazed by how busy it is, and how hard everyone works. I thought “This is where I want to teach.” When my holiday was over, I studied even harder. Two days after I graduated with my Education degree, I got on a plane to Hong Kong. My adventure in China was about to begin!
