1. For hundreds of millions of years, turtles (海龟) have struggled out of the sea to lay their eggs on sandy beaches, long before there were nature documentaries to celebrate them, or GPS satellites and marine biologists to track them, or volunteers to handcarry the hatchlings (幼龟) down to the water 's edge lest they become disoriented by headlights and crawl towards a motel parking lot instead. For hundreds of millions of years 为介词短语作时间状语。before ?为时间状语从句,该从句采用的是there be 结构,主语为or 连接的三个名词(词组):natural documentaries ,GPS satellites and marine biologists 和volunteers ,主语 后的不定式均为主语的后置定语。 2. The figures prompted Oceana to petition the government to upgrade the level of protection for the North Atlantic loggerheads from “threatened ” to “endangered” —meaning they are in danger of disappearing without additional help. The figures prompted Oceana ?。to petition the government 为不定式作prompted 的状语,to upgrade the level of protection ? they are in danger ?help 作meaning 的宾语,相当于省略了引导词that 的宾语从句。 3. But Nature is indifferent to human notions of fairness, and a report by the Fish and Wildlife Service showed a worrisome drop in the populations of several species of North Atlantic sea turtles, notably loggerheads, which can grow to as much as 400 pounds. Nature is indifferent ?and?a report ?showed?a ?drop ?。But 表转折。by the Fish and Wildlife Service 为介词 短语作report 的后置定语。which can grow to as much as 400 pounds 为非限制性定语从句,修饰loggerheads 。be indifferent to 意为“对? a drop in 指“在? 4. The narrow strips of beach on which the turtles lay their eggs are being squeezed on one side by development and on the other by the threat of rising sea levels as the oceans warm.

What are the two speakers talking about/discussing? What is the conversation mainly about? What is the main topic of the conversation? What’s the purpose of sb.’s calling/doing...?

And in today’s program, we’re looking at the results of two recently published surveys, which both deal with the same topic - happiness at work. John, tell us about the first survey. M: Well, this was done by a human resources consultancy, who interviewed more than 1,000 workers, and established a top ten of the factors, which make people happy at work. The most important factor for the majority of the people interviewed was having friendly, supportive colleagues. In fact, 73% of people interviewed put their relationship with colleagues as the key factor contributing to happiness at work, which is a very high percentage. The second most important factor was having work that is enjoyable. The two least important factors were having one's achievements recognized, and rather surprisingly, earning a competitive salary. W: So, we are not mainly motivated by money? M: Apparently not. W: Any other interesting information in the survey? M: Yes. For example, 25% of the working people interviewed described themselves as 'very happy' at work. However, 20% of employees described themselves as being unhappy. W: That’s quite a lot of unhappy people at work every day. M: It is, isn’t it? And there were several more interesting conclusions revealed by the survey. First of all, small is beautiful: people definitely prefer working for smaller organizations or companies with less than 100 staff. We also find out that, generally speaking, women were happier in their work than men. W: Yes, we are, aren’t we? M: And workers on part-time contracts, who only work 4 or 5 hours a day, are happier than those who work full-time. The researchers concluded that this is probably due to a better work-life balance. W: Are bosses happier than their employees? M: Yes, perhaps not surprisingly, the higher people go in a company, the happier

(4) 1. The position in which the life preserver will support a person who jumps or falls into the water is most important, as is its tendency to turn the wearer in the water from a face-down position to an upright or slightly backward position, with his face clear of the water, even when the wearer is exhausted or unconscious. (1991. The position is most important,as is its tendency to... in which 定语从句中又有who引导的定语从句修饰a person。as引导的非限制性定语从句中,to turn the wearer from...to...是不定式短语作定语修饰its tendency, with his face clear of the water作伴随状语,
