21.(6分)In the U. S. state of Washington, a road called Interstate 90 cuts through a wild mountainous area to reach the city of Seattle. For the area's many kinds of animals, the busy highway greatly limits their movements. Animals need to move to find food, to find mates and to find new places to live. Crossing I-90 as the road is called is a risky but sometimes necessary act. But soon, animals will have a safer choice.

To help the animals, the state is finishing work on its largest-ever wildlife bridge. The 11-meter-tall,

20-meter-wide bridge begins in the forest. Workers are adding fencing anti-plants to help guide the animals across the bridge. The I-90 bridge is part of a growing number of wildlife crossings across the United States. Some are fences, some are overland bridges, and some are underpasses. They all aim to keep drivers and animals away from each other.

A U.S. Transportation Department study found crashes between animals and humans rose year by year. The accidents made up about 5 percent of all crashes nationally, and cost the economy about $8 billion. Such costs come from car repaid, emergency room visits and removal of the dead animals on roads. Collisions between animals and drivers are rarely deadly to people. But they are often deadly to wildlife. The study also found that 21 endangered or threatened species in the U.S. are affected by vehicle hits.

Patty Garvey Darda of the U. S. Forest Service says the $6-million bridge will one day pay for itself because the highway will not have to be fully or partly closed each time a large animal is struck. “If you shut down Interstate 90, you shut down interstate trade.” she adds.

4、What is Darda’s attitude towards the building of I-90?

B.Concerned.

C.Favorable.

D.Indifferent.

Lakshmi grew up in India in the first half of the twentieth century, seeing many people around her who did not get enough food, were often sick and died young.

In the 1960s, was asked to help manage a program to improve nutrition in her country. At that time, most advice on nutrition came from North American and European countries. Nutritionists suggested foods that were common and worked well for people who lived in these nations.

For example, they told poor Indian women to eat more meal and eggs and drink more orange juice. But Lakshmi knew this advice was useless in a country like India. People there didn’t eat such foods. They weren’t easy to find. And for the poor, such foods were too expensive.

Lakshmi knew that for the program to work, it had to fit Indian culture. So she decided to adjust the nutrition program. She first found out what healthy middle-class people in India ate. She took note of the nutrients (营养物)available in those foods. Then she looked for cheap, easy-to-find foods that would provide the same nutrients.

She created a balanced diet of locally grown fruits, vegetables, and grains. These foods were cheap and could be cooked with simple equipment. Her ideas were thought unusual in the 1960s. For example, she insisted that a diet without meal could provide all major nutrients. Now we know she was right. But it took her continuous efforts to get others to finally accept her diet about 50 years ago. Because of Lakshmi’s program, Indian children almost doubled their food intake. And many children who would have been hungry and ill grew healthy and strong.

1、Why did Lakshmi think European nutritionists’ advice was useless?

A.It worked well for European people.

B.It suggested too many foods for Indians.

C.It was not practical in India at that time.

D.It included foods that didn’t exist in India.

2、Lakshmi studied healthy middle-class people’s diet in order to .

A.know about their eating habits B.learn about Indian culture

C.find out nutrients in their food D.write a report on food nutrients

3、Lakshmi’s balanced diet was considered unusual because people thought .

A.those foods were too cheap B.it should include some meat

C.it provided all major nutrients D.it enabled kids to grow healthy

4、What can we infer about Lakshmi?

A.She came from a rich family.

B.She disliked middle-class people.

C.She worked with European nutritionists.

D.She was a determined scientist.

25.(10分)Most of us spend a lot of time trying to figure out what makes us. We search the Internet for personality quizzes. We think endlessly over the things we’ve said or done. We pick teams-shy or outgoing—and then make our decisions through the label we’ve chosen. Other people, though-that can be a little more of a puzzle. It’s not likely that you can get much insight (深入了解) from taking a personality quiz on someone else’s behalf. But new research suggests that all that self-reflection you’ve been doing may be helpful here—a team of psychologists found a close link between greater self-awareness and social intelligence. The team leader Bockler said, “To get inside other people’s heads, then it may be best to start with your own.”

Over the course of three months, Bockler and her colleagues collected data from 161 people between the ages of 20 and 50 as they experienced a “thoughtful training” designed to help them focus on their inner lives. The participants who improved most over course of the training were also the ones who showed the most growth in how easily they could infer another person, s mental state, a skill known as the theory of mind.

Bockler believes these results are especially important given our current state of affairs. “Many of the global challenges that we face today—taking in refugees (难民), overcoming between-group conflicts, or leading more sustainable (可持续的) lives—require that we put ourselves in the shoes of others,” she said.

Still, we tend to seek inner consideration as a goal in itself, while underestimating (低估) the ways it can also help us connect more closely to others. Self-awareness isn’t limited t o just us—it spreads out into our relationships, too. Taking all those personality quizzes when you’re bored on your computer may not be the most helpful in that regard (就这一点而言), but by trying to become more aware of your own thoughts, you can begin to shape yourself into someone more sympathetic (富有同情心的), more smart and better at understanding the world outside your head.

1、What is implied in the first paragraph?

A.A personality quiz turns out a puzzle.

B.People prefer to do personality quizzes.

C.There are few strategies to understand others.

D.Self-awareness has nothing to do with social intelligence.

2、What is the theory of mind according to the text?

A.A pattern of personal behaviors.

B.A sign of inner personalities.

C.A standard for the mental state.

D.A skill to understand others.

3、What Bockler said proved that the results are ’.

A.practical to deal with modem social problems

B.the solutions to the current global challenges

C.a basis for a world without any conflicts

D.the requirements for the sustainable lives of refugees

4、It can be inferred from the last paragraph that the appreciation of others ’.

A.isn’t a limit to self-awareness at all

B.goes hand in hand with self-understanding

C.is our way of being connected with others

D.makes us care more about our own thoughts

The number of disabled people in India alone is probably more than double the total population of CanadA. In the United Kingdom, about one in ten people have some disability. Disability is not just something that happens to other people:as we get older, many of us will become less mobile, hard of hearing or have failing eyesight. Disablement can take many forms and occur at any time of life. Some people are born with disabilities. Many others become disabled as they get older. There are many progressive disabling diseases. The longer time goes on,the worse they become. Some people are disabled in accidents. Many others may have a period of disability in the form of a mental illness. All are affected by people’s attitude towards them. Disabled people face many physical barriers.Next time you go shopping or to work or to visit friends, imagine how you would manage if you could not get up steps, or on to buses and trains. How would you cope if you could not see where you were going or could not hear the traffic? But there are other barriers:

唐立新:Good evening everybody!

FORBES DEC. 26 2017 1 Artificial intelligence has a huge role to play on both sides of the cybersecurity equation. The industry faces a protracted and severe skill shortage. AI can perform both rote management tasks more quickly and efficiently, without getting bored or distracted. It can also learn new and better security practices from the evolving digital framework it inhabits. (1) In ou r world whe re conne cti vit y has far ou tpac ed securit y, int ell igent a gents that ca n h eal and defend themse lves are invaluabl e all ies. Machine learning has already proven effective in sandbox environments at exploring potential vulnerabilities and devising defenses.、 2 But cybercriminals are developing their own AI, and are unlikely to do so ethically. In legitimate lab settings, AI can be carefully monitored and trained for years to be predictable and reliable. (2)Cybercriminals are less likely to avoid these potentially dangerous side effects, favoring speed over safet y. Malware rings resembling intelligent swarms of (一大群) angry bees are already starting to appear, weaponizing devices against their owners. 3 It is the rise of the hive Today the term botnet refers to automated, zombie-like devices that are remotely programmed to target other vulnerable systems with malware (恶意软件) , or to infect them via blunt-force attacks, such as denial of service. Botnets are dangerous and account for billions of unauthorized network communications every quarter. The hivenet, however, is much more frightening because each unit of the hivenet, a swarmbot, will itself be powered by AI. (3)Swarmbots will be able to make autonomous decisions without relying on a botnet herder and join togethe r int o larger autonom ous thi nking networks. The potential for hivenet damage is substantially greater than anything we have faced from already-potent botnets. 4 (4)That’s why one of the most serious threats we face in 2018 and beyond is malware with the capa cit y to learn and gro w throu gh it s own su cces ses . Polymorphic (多态的) malware with pre-coded algorithms (算法) designed to subvert (破坏) countermeasures and screens is already a reality. But that approach simply generates millions of slight variations on the same theme. Nextgen Al- generated malware will be aware and capable of adapting itself. 5 (5)Instead of sim pl y f oll owing a set of pre -p rogramm ed inst ructi ons, it will select targets of opportuni t y, assess th eir weakness es, dev elo p a plan of att ack and cover it s tracks. And it will make intelligent decisions about what information to exfiltrate, and when. (6) In sh ort , tom orrow’s A I
