A

Every few years, two groups carry out a study of how many Americans wash their hands after using the toilet. These groups are the American Society for Microbiology and the American Cleaning Institute, formerly the Soap and Detergent Association.

There was good news in the latest study. Researchers found that eighty-five percent of adults washed their hands in public restrooms last moth. That was the most since the studies began in 1996. Researchers visited restrooms at a baseball park in Atlanta and a science museum and aquarium(水族馆) in Chicago. They also visited two train stations in New York City and a large farmers’market in San Francisco. In all, they observed about six thousand adults, with females and males equal in number.

The researchers found that seventy-seven percent of men and ninety-three percent of women washed their hands. That was up from sixty-six percent of men and eighty-eight percent of women in the last study three years ago.

The lowest rate of hand washing among men was at Turner Field, home of the Atlanta Braves baseball team. Only sixty-five percent of men washed their hands, compared to all but two percent of women. Chicago and San Francisco had the most hand washers—eighty-nine percent of adults. Atlanta followed at eighty-two percent. New York had the lowest rate, at seventy-nine percent of the adults observed at Grand Central Station and Penn Station.

The findings of the observational study conflicted(不一致) with the findings of a separate telephone survey of about one thousand people. Ninety-six percent of them said they always washed their hands after using public restrooms.

Almost nine out of ten also said they always washed after using the bathroom at home.

Hand washing can help prevent the spread of many different infections.

To clean your hands well, wet them first and rub in soap for at least twenty seconds, including between the fingers and under the nails. Then wash under running water. In a public restroom, if you dry your hands with a paper towel, you should also use the towel to shut off the water and open the door.

B.Mini Computer Capitalists

Impressed by the persuasive technical advice which Trent Eisenberg gave online computer powerhouse Compaq approached him about a job at the company's headquarters in Houston. But Compaq was forced to withdraw(收回)the offer when an important detail about Eisenherg was discovered: he was just 14. Two years later, Eisenberg now runs his own technical support company, F1 Comput er, “I might be interested in getting a job in a few years, after college,” he says. “But this is just right for me now.”

Eisenberg is among an increasing number of teenagers who are running their own computer-related businesses--and, for the most part, being successful at it. "Many kids in suburban homes have grown up operating very powerful computers, so technology is second nature to them in a way that it's not to many adults," says Gene Depose, president of a high tech research firm based in New York.

Danny Kalmick, the 14-year-old president of Kalmick & Co. Computing took his first step toward becoming a neighborhood computer expert at age 11, when he broke down his first PC (a 486/DX2) to inspect its motherboard (主板). When neighbors called him for computer advice a year later, Kalmick saw a business opportunity. So he printed up business cards, and took out an ad in a neighborhood telephone book. He now has about 10 regular clients, works 6 to 10 hours a week, and earns $ 20 an hour solving tech problems.

Low prices are usually an advantage in the marketplace, but so is age. Many young business people argue: Kids aren't as frightening to work with as their more senior adults. “We're professional, of course, but we are just kids, and people feel like they can talk with us and ask us whatever they want without being embarrassed,” says Charles Ross, 18, vice president of a Web services company that develops marketing sites for local businesses. Ross runs the firm with his twin brother, James, and their friend Matthew Baylis, 17. “Beside, a lot of our clients tell us that they would rather work with us because we've grown up with the technology and have a solid handle on it.”

A. young computer business people

Third-generation mobile phones, known as 3G, are the next big step for the telecom industry. Data speed in 3G networks is much quicker than that in present technology. This means users can have high-speed Internet access and enjoy video and CD-quality music on their phones.

“Mobile data is not a dream; it’s not an option but a requirement,”said Len Lauer, head of a US communications company, Sprint PCS, at a 3G conference in Bangkok earlier this month.

With 3G, you can forget about text messages telling you yesterday’s news; a 3G phone can receive video news programs, updated four times a day. Internet access will also be much quicker, making it easier to surf the Web on your phone than on your computer at home.

Face-to-face video calls

Don’t worry about getting lost. 3G phones offer map services so you can find a new restaurant just by pressing a few keys on your handset.

However, the most impressive part of 3G technology is video calling. With live two-way video communication, you can have face-to-face talks with friends and family on your mobile phone.

Many European countries have already launched the service. In May 2000 the US Government issued five license to run 3G wireless services, while the first 3G phones arrived in Italy in March this year. International telecom companies can’t wait to sell 3G in China, the world’s largest mobile telecommunications market. But they will have to be patient. At the moment, China is involved in testing its 3G-based technologies, networks and services. This will be followed by a trial period before the phones can finally hit the shops.

“We need to create a pool of 3G customers before the large-scale commercial launch of the service,” said Fan Yunjun, marketing manager for Beijing Mobile. “We expect that the 3G licenses will be issued late

There was something wrong with my computer yesterday. When(we are)in difficulty/When we meet with difficulties/When we have difficulties ,what we need is not to blame each other but to help each other. We should do something to prevent the spread of this disease. What can we do to prevent the spread of this disease? He is likely to get the driving license with his own efforts. 其实,学生对likely这个key word的使用也是会的,完全能够使用be likely to do或It’s likely th at… Shanghai has gone through…,it has become…,这已成为很多学生的一个习惯,句子和句子中随便用逗号隔开,英语不像中文,必须要考虑到句子的结构,逗号也不能随意使用。
