How can we measure intelligence? Experts are not completely certain about the answer to this question. However, in solving some problems, monkeys are better than other animals and this is agreed to be a sign of their high intelligence. In one experiment the animal had to reach the food at the other side of a fence by walking round. Monkeys quickly saw the solution. Dogs were not so certain, while hens simply rushed at the fence, trying to reach the food in a straight line. In the second step of the experiment, the animal could not walk round, but there was a rope connected to the food. The bus had been ordered to arrive at the rest-house at seven thirty, and by eight thirty we thought we should be well on the road. It was clear that we were new to Africa. At ten o'clock we were pacing round and round our mountain of luggage at the gate of the rest-house. At eleven o'clock a cloud of dust appeared in the distance and in the middle of it was the bus. Then it stopped in front of us. I noticed that there had been twelve passengers sitting in the back of the bus, talking to each other with their goats and chickens. They enjoyed their travel. I went to have a talk with the driver, and it was then that I learned that it was better not to ask why a bus was late. I was treated to at least six different reasons, none of which satisfied anyone except the driver. Wisely leaving this subject, I turned my attention to the crowd in the back of the bus. I was told that this was the driver's wife, this was the driver's wife's sister, this was the father of the conductor, and so on. Then our luggage was loaded quickly and carelessly, which was frightening me, and, as I watched, I wondered how much of our equipment would be left undamaged.

The Mother Goose stories, so well known to children all over the world, are commonly said to have been written by a little old woman for her grandchildren. According to some people, she lived in Boston, and her real name was Elizabeth Vergoose. Her son-in-law, a printer named Thomas Fleet, was supposed to have published the famous stories and poems for small children in 1719. However, no copy of this book has ever been found, and most scholars doubt the truth of this story--and doubt, moreover, that Mother Goose was ever a real person. They point out that the name is a direct translation of the French "Mere 1'Oye."In 1697 the Frenchman Charles Perrault published the first book in which this name was used. Think again. Leasing can end up being just as expensive as buying. Most people think about leasing because they believe it will cost them less money. They're right-it is cheaper, but only in the short term. For example, if you were to lease anew Subaru Forester, you might pay $300 per month for the car. If you were to buy the same car, you would pay about $400 per month. Over a three-year, you would save $3600-a big savings. But after your lease is over, you have to give the car back. Many people want to lease because they can drive a more expensive car than they might otherwise be able to afford. For example, if you spend $300 monthly on a car, you might be able to lease a new Ford Explorer. For the same price, you might have to buy a used Explorer, or buy a new but much less expensive model. A lease, therefore, allows you to drive the latest models of more expensive cars. However, whatever car you can afford to buy you get to keep it, and it will always have a resell or trade-in(以新旧换)value if you want to upgrade to a new car later. Furthermore, people who lease cars are often shocked by how much they must pay when the lease is over . Most leases limit you to a certain number of miles. If you go over that, you must pay for each mile. As a result, you may end up paying thousands of dollars in mileage(里程) fees. In addition, when you lease ,you have to pay for regular maintenance and repairs to the vehicle. Since you must return the car finally, you are paying to repair someone else's car.

(3) 空格前为冠词a /an/the,应填名词。

He took out one thing at a time until he got down to his $20. With eyes full of tears, he asked if he could phone his mum to pick him up. when he got through, it appeared that even this was inconvenient for his mother. He bit hard on his lip to stop the tears and walked outside to wait on the bench in front of the shop. This was all too much for the young assistant who had served him and she said,“1 wish I could afford to pay for the rest of his things.” One of the other girls said she had a few dollars. Then two others said they could help as well. These four young girls pooled their money and found that they had more than enough money for the boy’s extra purchases. So they upgraded his pens and pencils to top-quality ones, then took the bag out to the boy on the seat. His young face changed from sadness to the most beautiful smile. His mother arrived much later to pick him up. Instead of running to the car, he ran back into the store and called out, “Thank you!” I was so proud of my team that day.
