When first entered, Vanak Restaurant does not look like much of a restaurant, but once the pleasant smells of kabob(烤肉串)hit the senses, you are incapable of calling it anything less.

Owned by a local couple, this Persian restaurant has an inviting, homelike atmosphere that many restaurants lack.

The space is small with only a few dining tables and nearly no decoration, but the environment is truly charming.

Lying in a hardly noticeable street corner, the restaurant still attracts all customers, especially those experienced in the delights of Middle Eastern cooking.

A common sight is that of old Persian men sitting in the corner talking loudly about world topics, watching news events on TV, drinking a black tea known as Persian chai, an reading local Persian newspapers all the while

trying to finish off their plates piled with food.

The variety of food at the restaurant is limited, but the amount of each dish is fairly large. Most of the meals can serve two people and are under $10, so not only is it affordable but practical as well.

The food, especially appeals to health-conscious eaters because each dish is very healthy, made with limited fat and oil and served straight off the grill (烤肉架).

The main dish that the restaurant is popular for is its kabobs, which are different style of grilled meat.

One delicious and extremely healthy dish is the Joojeh Kabob, which is made of grille chicken pieces served with cither rice or bread. Another great kabob is the Cbelo Kabob, kabob consisting of grilled beef.

Although the restaurant is small, the atmosphere and the food is delicious. It is a place that should not be overlooked.

8. When first entering the restaurant, one can find that it ________.

A. is splendidly decorated

B. has pleasant smells of kabobs

C. is crowded with dining tables

D. looks like a common restaurant

9. What activity is also mentioned apart from dining in the restaurant?

A. Watching news events on TV.

B. Drinking a kind of black coffee.

C. Reading local English newspapers.

D. Discussing world topics in low voices.

10. What is the dish Joojeh Kabob mainly made of?

A. Rice

B. Chicken

C. Bread

D. Beef

11. It can be inferred from the passage that the restaurant ________.

A. occupies a large space

Since 1984, Philadelphia has been cleaning up its art. One by one, graffiti-covered walls are being changed into outdoor art. So far, more than 1,800 murals(壁画)have been painted. Philadelphia now has more murals than any other American city.

The walls that were once ugly with graffiti(涂鸦)are now covered with beautiful pictures of historical heroes and modern art, thanks to the Mural Arts Program (MAP). Its work makes schools and public places attractive, and its citizens very proud. The program began as part of Philadelphia's Anti-Graffiti Network. Jane Golden is the MAP's artistic director. "When people ask me what ow program is about," she says, "I answer them with one word: hope." Each year, the MAP offers youth art programs and workshops. Some one-time graffiti writers even help paint MAP murals.

The MAP's work, says Golden, is all about developing a sense of community(社区).When a neighborhood requests a mural, the MAP works with the people there to develop a message. Some messages have been "Safe Streets," "Love and Care," and "Peace Walk."

The MAP receives up to 50 requests for murals each week. Last year, the workers painted 140 murals.

"The making of a mural enters people's collective memory as an extraordinary, pleasant moment in neighborhood history" says Golden, who began as a muralist in Los Angeles.

12.What can be the best title for the text?

A. Love, from Graffiti Writers to Muralists

B. MAP, a New Company in Philadelphia

C. Jane, an Excellent Mural Artist

D. Hope, One Wall at a Time

13. What is the Mural Arts Program in Philadelphia aimed at?

A. Helping the young find jobs.

B. Protecting the neighborhood.

C. Fighting against graffiti.

D. Attracting more visitors.

14.How does the MAP decide on the message for a mural?

A. By having discussions with people in the community.

B .By seeking advice from the city government.

C .By learning from the young graffiti writers.

D. By studying the history of the city.

15. Which of the following words best describes the work of the MAP?

A. Difficult.

B.Dangerous.

C. Experimental.

D. Successful.

Reading Comprehension (40 分)

Section A (30分)

Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished

statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.

A

Can dogs and cats live in perfect harmony in the same home? People who are thinking about adopting a dog as a friend for their cats are worried that they will fight. A recent research has found a new recipe of success. According to the study, if the cat is adopted before the dog, and if they are introduced when still young (less than 6 months for cats, a year for dogs), it is highly probable that the two pets will get along swimmingly. Two-thirds of the homes interviewed reported a positive relationship between their cat and dog.

However, it wasn’t all sweetness and light. There was a reported coldness between the cat and dog in 25% of the homes, while aggression and fighting were observed in 10% of the homes. One reason for this is probably that some of their body signals were just opposite. For example, when a cat turns its head away it signals aggression, while a dog doing the same signals submission.

In homes with cats and dogs living peacefully, researchers observed a surprising behaviour. They are learning how to talk each other’s language. It is a surprise that cats can learn how to talk ‘dog’, and dogs can learn how to talk ‘Cat’.

What’s interesting is that both cats and dogs have appeared to develop their intelligence. They can learn to read each other’s body signals, suggesting that the two may have more in common than was preciously suspected. Once familiar with each other’s presence and body language, cats and dogs can play together, greet each other nose to nose, and enjoy sleeping together in the sofa. They can easily share the same water bowl and in some cases groom(梳理) each other.

The significance of this research on cats and dogs may go beyond pets----to people who don’t get along, including neighbors, colleagues at work, and even world superpowers. If cats and dogs can learn to get along, surely people have a good chance.

1. The underlined word “swimmingly” in paragraph1 is closest in meaning to______.

A. early

B.sweetly

C.quickly

D. smoothly

2. Some cats and dogs may fight when_________.

A. they are cold to each other

B. they look away from each other

C. they misunderstand each other’s signals

D. they are introduced at an early age

3. It is suggested in paragraph 4 that cats and dogs_______.

A. have common interests

B. are less different than was thought

C. have a common body langage

D. are less intelligent than was expected

4. What can we human beings learn from cats and dogs?

A. We should learn to live in harmony

B. We should knows more about animals

C. We should live in peace with animals

D. We should learn more body languages

Two-thirds of the homes interviewed reported a positive relationship between their cat and dog.

根据第二段while aggression and fighting were observed in 10% of the homes. One reason for this is probably that some of their body signals were just opposite.可知选C。

They can learn to read each other’s body signals, suggesting that the two may have more in common than was preciously suspected.

According to the US government, wind farms off the Pacific coast could produce 900 gig watts of electricity every year. Unfortunately, the water there is far too deep for even the tallest windmills to touch bottom. An experiment under way off the coast of Norway, however, could help put them anywhere.

The project, called Hywind, is the world’s first large-scale deepwater wind turbine(涡轮发电机). Although it uses a fairly standard 152-ton, 2.3-megawatt turbine, Hywind represents totally new technology. The turbine will be fixed 213 feet above the water on a floating spar (船用圆材), a technology Hywind’s creator, the Norwegian company StatoilHydro, has developed recently. The steel spar, which is filled with stones and goes 328 feet below the sea surface, will be tied to the ocean floor by three cables; these will keep the spar stable and prevent the turbine from moving up and down in the waves. Hywind’s stability in the cold and rough sea would prove that even the deepest corners of the ocean are suitable for wind power. If all goes according to plan, the turbine will start producing electricity six miles off the coast of southwestern Norway as early as September.

To produce electricity on a large scale, a commercial wind farm will have to use bigger turbines than Hywind does, but it’s difficult enough to balance such a large turbine so high on a floating spar in the middle of the ocean. To make that turbine heavier, the whole spar’s to design a new kind of wind turbine, one whose gearbox(变速箱) sits at sea level rather than behind the blades (see picture )

Hywind is a test run, but the benefits for perfecting floating wind-farm technology could be extremely large. Out at sea, the wind is often stronger and steadier than close to shore, where all existing offshore windmills are planted. Deep-sea farms are invisible from land, which helps overcome the windmill-as-eyesore objection. If the technology catches on, it will open up vast areas of the planet’s surface to one of the best low-carbon power sources available.

5. The Hywind project uses totally new technology to ensure the stability of _______.

A. the cables which tie the spar to the ocean floor

B. the spar which is floating in deep-sea water

C. the blades driven by strong and steady sea wind

D. the stones filled in the spar below the sea surface

6. To balance a bigger turbine high on a flatting spar, a new type of turbine is to be designed with its gearbox

sitting _______.

A. on the sea floor

B. on the spar top

C. at sea level

D. behind the blades

7. Wide applications of deepwater wind power technology can ____________.

A. solve the technical problems of deepwater windmills

B. make financial profits by producing more turbines

C. settle the arguments about environmental problems

D. explore low-carbon power resources available at sea

【答案】BCD

C

They are the sort of friends who are so close they trust each other with their lives. If one falls, the other is there to catch him.

They are Wellman, whose legs were permanently injured nine years ago in a rock-climbing accident, and Corbett, an experienced rock climber. Together, they climbed up Half Dome, the famous 2,000-foot rock in the Yosemite National Park, through one of the most difficult routes(路线).

During the climb, Corbett took the lead, hit in the metal spikes (尖状物) that guided the ropes and climbed up. Then, after Wellman pulled himself up the rope, Corbett went down to remove the spikes and climbed up again. This process was repeated time and again, inch by inch, for 13 days. Wellman’s job was not easy either. He got himself up the rope through upper body strength alone.

In all, Wellman figured that he had done 5,000 pull-ups up the rope on the climb.

However, when the two men first met, they never talked about climbing. “He knew that was how I got injured.” Wellman said. Until one day Wellman decided that he wanted to climb again and they started training.

Their climb of Half Dome was not all smooth. At one point, pieces of rock gave way, and Corbett dropped down quickly. Wellman locked their rope in place, stopping the fall at 20 feet. His quick action probably saved his friend’s life.

“Your partner can save your life — you can save your partner’s life,” Wellman said as the pair received

congratulations from friends. “There are real close ties.”

8. Which of the following was a challenge for Corbett in climbing Half Dome?

A. To climb up to remove the spikes.

B. To climb it twice

C. To do 5,000 pull-ups up the rope.

D. To lock the rope in place.

9. Why did the two men never talk about climbing when they first met?

A. Corbett was poorly trained.

B. Wellman had lost interest in climbing.

C. Corbett didn’t want to hurt Wellman.

D. Wellman hadn’t decided whether to climb again.

10. What do we know about Wellman?

A. He climbed Half Dome by himself.

B. He was disabled in a traffic accident.

C. He stopped rock-climbing for some time.

D. He was saved by Corbett during the climb.

11. The main idea of the text is that .

A. two heads are better than one

B. friendship is precious in life

C. the disabled should never give up

D. a man can be destroyed but cannot be defeated

根据句子when the two men first met, they never talked about climbing. “He knew that was how I got injured.” Wellman said和…Wellman, whose legs were permanently injured nine years ago in a rock-climbing accident可知,他们没有谈论攀岩是因为Corbett不想伤害Wellman这个残疾人的自尊。

A项课文中没有提及;B项错在in a traffic accident,应为in a rock-climbing accident;D项错误,应为Wellman挽救了Corbett的生命。

There are real close ties也能说明C项正确。

D

“Mum, what does it mean when someone tells you that they have a skeleton(骨骼)in the closet(衣橱)?” Jessica asked. “A skeleton in the closet?” her mother paused thoughtfully. “Well, it’s something that you would rather not have anyone else know about. For example, if in the past, someone in Dad’s family had been arrested for stealing a horse, it would be ‘a skeleton in his family’s closet’. He really wouldn’t want any neighbor to know about it.”

“Why pick on my family?” Jessica’s father said with anger. “Your family history isn’t so good, you know. Wasn’t your great-great-grandfather a prisoner who was transported to Australia for his crimes?” “Yes, but people these days say that you are not a real Australian unless your ancestors arrived as prisoners.” “Gosh, sorry I asked. I think I understand now,” Jessica cut in before things grew worse.

After dinner, the house was very quiet. Jessica’s parents were still quite angry with each other. Her mother was ironing clothes and every now and then she glared at her husband, who hid behind his newspaper pretending to read. When she finished, she gathered the freshly pressed clothes in her arms and walked to Jessica’s closet. Just as she opened the door and reached in to hang a skirt, a bony arm stuck out from the dark depths and a bundle of white bones fell to the floor. Jessica’s mother sank in a faint(晕倒), waking only when Jessica put a cold, wet cloth on her forehead. She looked up to see the worried faces of her husband and daughter.

“What happened? Where am I?” she asked. “You just destroyed the school’s skeleton, Mum,” explained Jessica. “I brought it home to help me with my health project. I meant to tell you, but it seemed that as soon as I mentioned skeletons and closets, it caused a problem between you and Dad.” Jessica looked in amazement as her parents began to laugh madly. “They’re both crazy,” she thought.

12. According to Jessica’s mother, “a skeleton in the close” means ______.

A. a family honor

B. a family secret

C. a family story

D. a family treasure

13. What can we learn about some Australians’ ancestors form Paragraph 2?

A. They were brought to Australia as prisoners.

B. They were the earliest people living in Australia.

C. They were involved in some crimes in Australia.

D. They were not regarded as criminals in their days.

14. Jessica’s mother fell down into a faint because she was ______.

A. knocked

B. frightened

C. injured

D. surprised

15. Jessica’s parents laughed madly at the end of the story probably because ______.

A. they were crazy

B. they were over excited

C. they realized their misunderstanding

D. they both thought they had won the quarrel

12.B,词义猜测题,根据第一段母亲所说的话“it’s something that you would rather not have anyone else to know about”“它是一件你不希望其他人所知道的事情”,选择B。

Yes,but people these days say that you are not a real Australian unless your ancestors arrived as prisoners”,“如今的人们说如果你的祖先不是以囚犯的身份到达澳大利亚的话,那么你就不是一个真正的澳大利亚人。”选择A

14.B,细节理解题,由第三段“Just as she opened the door and reached in to hang a skirt, a bony arm stuck out from the dark depths and a bundle of white bones fell to the floor.”“正当她打开门伸进手去挂短裙的时候,一只骨头胳膊从暗处伸出来然后一堆骨头摔倒了地板上。”

15.C,判断推理题,结合全文理解,开头讲述了Jessica的一个提问“Mum, what does it mean when someone tells you that they have a skeleton(骨骼)in the closet(衣橱)?”引出了父母之间的争论,之后妈妈被孩子藏在衣橱中的用来完成学校课题的骷髅吓晕过去,最后Jessica解释时说,“I meant to tell you, but it seemed that as soon as I mentioned skeletons and closets, it caused a problem between you and Dad.”

Reading Comprehension (40 分)

Section A (30分)

Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.

A

The American west is full of “ghost towns”, where people left everything behind to find new homes. Now a “ghost city” is being built in the US. It won’t be abandoned. It will be used to test the technology of the future. Called CITE – the Center for Innovation, Testing and Evaluation – the city will cover an area of 39 square kilometers in the middle of the New Mexico desert. The city was proposed by Pegasus Global Holdings, a technology company.

Why build a city that nobody lives in? Because new technologies may cause problems or even be dangerous. In a “ghost city”, they can be tested for safety.

“It will be a true laboratory without the problems and safety issues that come with people living there. Here you can break things and run into things, and get used to how they work, before taking them out into the market,” said Pegasus managing director Robert Brumley in Wired magazine.

Without the worry of harming people, any new idea can be tested in this city. Just think about the possibilities – driverless cars can move freely on the streets, robot homes can be designed and drone delivery can be used for mailing packages.

There’s just one problem with CITE. “People … can suddenly jump out in front of something,” Reese Jones, a founder of Singularity University, US, told Fortune magazine.

Jones is worried that even if a technology works perfectly in CITE, it will not work well in a place full of people.

1. The empty city is being built ______.

A. to help people experience life in a “ghost town”

B. for shooting movies

C. to test new technology

D. to help people in “ghost towns” settle down

2. What do we know about CITE?

A. It takes up 39 square kilometers of ocean area.

B. It is located in the middle of New York.

C. It was started by Singularity University.

D. There will be nobody living in it.

3. According to Jones, what is the problem with CITE?

A. It is not a true laboratory.

B. Testing in CITE will be expensive.

C. There won’t be anyone who can fix things if they break in CITE.

D. The test results might not work in real cities.

4. What might be a suitable title for this text?

A. Mysteries of the American west

B. Technology of the future

C. Testing in empty cities

D. Discussions about ghost towns

美国正在建一个被用来测试未来新科技的空城CITE(创新测试测评中心)。 It will be used to test the technology of the future.

Why build a city that nobody lives in?

Jones is worried that even if a technology works perfectly in CITE, it will not

work well in a place full of people.

residents to sort garbage into four categories (类别), namely recyclable, harmful, dry and wet waste. If people fail to sort their garbage properly, they can be fined up to 200 yuan.

Since the regulation took effect, the amount of total daily waste in Shanghai has been reduced by an average of 15,500 tons, dropping 26 percent from the end of 2018, while the average daily weight of recyclables hits 4,500 tons, five times higher than the end of 2018, according to the Shanghai Landscaping and City Appearance Administrative Bureau.

The city also rebuilt 21,000 waste-sorting stations and more than 40,000 waste bins have been updated. The city’s waste collection and transportation system is complete, according to the bureau.

“Proper waste sorting protects the environment and saves natural resources,” said Deng Jianping, director of the bureau. “Led by the central government, Shanghai is making efforts to develop long-term solutions to garbage management.”

However, there have also been some problems. Some people complained that it is difficult to deal with wet garbage, as they are asked to remove wet garbage from its bag when dumping. According to the sorting rules, the wet garbage must go in the wet waste bin and the bag must go in the dry waste bin.

This separation is necessary, as it ensures that the wet garbage will decompose (分解) properly and become useful organic (有机的) waste, the bureau said.

Plastic bags can affect this process. Some people in Shanghai are instead using paper bags that can biodegrade (生物降解) or plastic containers that can be washed and reused, according to Xinhua.

5. People in Shanghai are asked to sort their garbage into the _____ categories.

A. recyclable, dry, harmful and kitchen waste

B. recyclable, kitchen, dry and “other” waste

5.D 。根据第二段的into four categories (类别), namely recyclable, harmful, dry and wet waste,可知答案为D

and s aves natural resources,” said Deng Jianping, director of the bureau. “Led by the central government, Shanghai is making efforts to develop long-term solutions to garbage management.”,所以选D。

Humans share Earth with many different kinds of wildlife. However, many of our animal and plant friends may not be around for much longer.

According to the first comprehensive report on biodiversity released by the United Nations in May 2019, 1 million of Earth’s 8 million species are in danger of extinction, including amphibians (两栖动物), marine mammals (海洋哺乳动物) and insects.

Humans are mainly to blame for this, according to the report. The world’s population has more than doubled (from 3.7 to 7.6 billion) in the last 50 years. Humans have used more than a third of the world’s land and 75 percent of freshwater supplies to grow crops and keep livestock (牲畜). As a result, there are fewer habitats and natural

resources available for animals, as well as more pollution.

Climate change is another reason. The world’s coral reefs are suffering from climate change. If the world warms up by another 0.5 C, coral reefs will be reduced in size by 70 to 90 percent, the report said.

This has led scientists to believe that there could be a sixth mass extinction, the first to be caused by humans, according to the Guardian. There have been five mass extinctions before, the last being 65 million years ago. That was when dinosaurs went extinct.

To deal with this problem, many countries have taken action. For example, China started banning (禁止) ivory trading in 2016, China Daily reported.

According to HuffPost, there are things that we can do personally to save animal species. For example, we can avoid buying products that come from animals and use less water.

“Each individual action has an effect and every person can make a difference -through a mass we can turn the tide,” said Claudia Sobrevila from the Global Wildlife Program, according to the World Bank.

9. What does the UN’s report tell us?

A. Many species are at risk of extinction.

B. Humans are not being friendly to animals and plants.

C. Earth is no longer a suitable place for wildlife.

D. Little was done to protect wildlife in 2019.

10. What are the two major causes of this problem?

A. A growing population and pollution.

B. Pollution and climate change.

C. Climate change and human activity.

D. A growing population and wasted resources.

11. The possibility of a sixth mass extinction shows that _____.

A. the problem is normal

B. the problem is serious

C. humans will go extinct as well

D. nothing can be done to save most animals

12. What do we know from the last two paragraphs?

A. Many countries have taken action.

B. Every person’s effort matters.

C. Humans should raise more animals.

D. Animal products will not be available.

As the novel coronavirus rapidly spreading to about 70 nations, many countries are canceling their major sporting and cultural events.

Already, major domestic events in China, including the National People’s Congress and the World Athletics Indoor Championships, have already been postponed. Now the rest of the world seems to be following suit.

The world of soccer is also being affected. In Italy, several matches in February were played behind closed doors (without spectators). Meanwhile, entire soccer leagues in Japan, South Korea, and China’s Super League have all been placed on hold (暂停). There is also the possibility that Euro 2020 – an international soccer tournament for European teams – could be cancelled. When asked about the cancellations, FIFA president Gianni Infantino said, “The health of persons is much more important than any football game. If games have to be postponed, then we have to go through that.”

The outbreak is also impacting cultural events around the world. Facing Europe’s largest coronavirus epidemic, with over 2,000 confirmed cases (确诊病例) so far, Italy also cut short its iconic Venice carnival (狂欢节) and Milan Fashion Week show. The latter was being live-streamed from an empty theater.

Even a small increase in light activity such as washing dishes, or walking around the house might help prevent an early death among older adults, researchers say. "It is important for elderly people, who might not be able to do much moderate intensity(强度)activity, that just moving around and doing light intensity activity will have strong effects and is beneficial," said Ulf Ekelund, who led the research. Published in the BMJ, the latest research was based on a review of eight studies involving a total of more than 36,000 people with an average age of almost 63 years. Participants were followed for five to six years; 2,149 deaths were recorded. All of the studies involved monitoring the physical activity of individuals who had activity trackers, and the studies did not rely on self-reporting, which, the experts noted, could be unreliable. For each study participants were split into four equal-sized groups, based on the total amount of time spent actively, and the risk of death assessed, taking into account factors such as age, sex, body mass index, and socioeconomic status. This was then repeated for an amount of activity at different levels of intensity. The results were analyzed together to give an overview. The team found a greater amount of activity was linked to a lower risk of death. The results held for different intensities of activity. The team said the study supported the message "sit less and move more and more often". However, the study had limitations. It only looked at the situation for middle age and older adults, most of whom lived in the US or Europe, and some of the effect could be due to those people with a higher risk of death being less likely to be related to physical activity. Physical activity levels also were only measured over one period of time. Dr Gavin Sandercock, from the University of Essex, said the results suggested moving more brought bigger benefits than simply reducing the time of sitting, another factor measured in the study. "This study reinforces the important message that getting the least active people to do even just a little bit more physical activity can have important public health benefits," he said. (1)Which of the following may Ulf Ekelund suggest elderly people do? A.lying on the sofa reading. B.Doing a little gentle gardening. C.Going out to hike with friends. D.Playing basketball sometimes. (2)What can we know about the research? A.It lasted about 8 years. B.The researchers admitted they used fake data. C.The participants didn't include younger people. D.Some participants died because of doing too much physical activity (3)What is the author's attitude towards the researchers' conclusion? A.Doubtful

(I)★★★ MONTREAL (Reuters) – Crossing the US-Canada border(边界)to go to church on a Sunday (安全)rules. cost a US citizen $10,000 for breaking Washington’s strict new security The expensive trip to church was a surprise for Richard Albert, who lives right on the Canadian border. Like the other half-dozen people of Township 15, crossing the border is a daily occurrence for Albert. The nearby Quebec village of St. Pamphile is where they shop, eat and go to church. There are many such situations in these areas along the largely unguarded 5,530-mile border between Canada and the US-which in some cases actually runs down the middle of streets or through buildings. As a result, Albert says he did not expect any problems three weeks ago when he returned home to the US after attending church in Canada, as usual. The US customs(海关)station in this are is closed on Sundays, so be just drove around the locked gate, as he had done every weekend since the gate appeared last May, following a tightening of border security. Two days later. Albert was told to go to the customs office, where an officer told him he had been caught on camera crossing the border illegally(非法). Ottawa has given out special passes to some 300 US citizens in that area so they can enter the country when Canadian customs stations are closed, but the US stopped a similar program last May. That forces the people to a 200-mile detour along hilly roads to get home through another border checkpoint. Albert has requested that the customs office change their decisions on the fine, but he has not attended a Sunday church since. “I feel like I’m living in a prison,” he said. 1.We learn from the text that Richard Albert is .

Last week, Vodafone started a test of the UK's first full 5G service, available for use by businesses in Salford. It is part of its plan to trial the technology in seven UK cities. But what can we expect from the next generation of mobile technology? One thing we will see in the preparation for the test is lots of tricks with the new tech. Earlier this year, operators paid almost £ 1.4 billion for the 5G wavelengths, and to compensate for that cash, they will need to catch the eye of consumers. In September, Vodafone used its bit of the range to display the UK's first hologram (全息) call. The Manchester City captain Steph Houghton appeared as a hologram in Newbury. It isn't all holograms, however: 5G will offer faster internet access, with Ofcom (英国通讯管理局) suggesting that video that takes a minute to download on 4G will be available in just a second. The wider application is to support connected equipment on the "internet of things" -not just the internet-enabled fridge that can reorder your milk for you, but the network that will enable driverless cars and delivery drones (无人机) to communicate with each other. Prof William Webb has warned that the technology could be a case of the emperor's new clothes. Much of the speed increase, he claims, could have been achieved by putting more money in the 4G network, rather than a new technology. Other different voices have suggested that a focus on rolling out wider rural broadband access and addressing current network coverage would be more beneficial to the UK as a whole. Obviously, 5G will also bring a cost to consumers. It requires a handset for both 5G and 4G, and the first 5G-enabled smart phones are expected in the coming year. With the slow pace of network rollout so far, it is likely that consumers will end up upgrading to a new 5 G phone well before 5 G becomes widely available in the next couple of years. (1)Why does Prof William Webb say "the technology could be a case of the emperor's new clothes"? A. He is in favor of the application of the new technology. B. 5G will bring a cost to consumers in their daily life. C. 5G helps people communicate better with each other. D. He prefers more money to be spent on 4G networks. (2)The underlined word "addressing" in the fourth paragraph has the closest meaning to________. A. making a speech to B. trying to solve C. managing to decrease D. responding to (3)The last paragraph indicates that . A. it'll take several years .to make 5G accessible to the public in the UK B. 5G service shows huge development potential and a broad market C. customers are eager to use 5G smart phones instead of 4G ones D. it's probable that 5G network rollout is speeding up in Britain (4)What do we know about the text?
