Part A Reading Aloud

The South Pacific Ocean is on the surface of it still a healthy ocean. We depend on it. Over 60% of the world’s fish catch comes from the Pacific. But like all oceans, it has little or no protection, so it may not stay healthy much longer. For the South Pacific, this is a critical time. It’s changing in ways that. If left unchecked, could develop into a global crisis. Some of its residents have been through crisis before. And protecting the fish will ensure a healthy ocean for all the marine life of the Pacific. It will require international commitment and cooperation.

Uncle John Was Saved

When Uncle John was 85 years old, most of his families and relatives were already dead. He lived by himself in a big house. The only person who often talked to him was his nephew Tom. Tom called several times a week just for few minutes to say hello and see if everything was OK.

One morning Tom phoned Uncle John again. Again no answer. Two hours later he called the 3rd time. Still no answer, he got very anxious. So he called Uncle John’s next door neighbor. Tom told her that he was worried about Uncle John and asked her to see what was wrong. A while later, the neighbor phoned Tom. She said nervously, “Tom, I’m sorry it took so long. Uncle John didn’t answer the door, so I used his spare key. I found him lying on the bathroom floor. I could not wake him up.” Tom called the doctor immediately, and then rushed to Uncle John’s house. When he got there, the doctor had already been there. The doctor said that he was just in time to save him.

Tortoises, as heavy as four grown men. In their huge bodies they can store enough fat to go for a year without eating or drinking anything. To survive here, it seems you need to be a monster. Or is it just that you need to be different? Their rich at, their giant size made tortoises perfect for the ship’s larder. In 200 years, over 200,000 were taken. On some islands tortoises were completely wiped out. But out of the tragedy came some good. As more people came to Galapagos, a clearer picture of the islands began to appear. Each got its own name.

W: Dr. Brown, welcome to today’s program.

M: Thank you. It’s a pleasure being here.

W: We know that you are a language specialist, and you just published a book on how to learn a foreign language. And it’s selling well, so tell us the title of your book?

M: It’s called “Learning a language over Ex and Tost” (音)

W: That sounds very interesting, tell us what you discuss in your book.

M: It is very important to set up a regular program like planning a few minutes every morning around the breakfast time.

W: But I have been learning Spanish for four years, and I haven’t become a good speaker of it.

M: We can’t become fluent speakers in the matter of a few minute hearing that. We should follow a regular course of study.

三问

1. 学生问:Could you please speak a little more?

电脑答:My basic suggestion is to learn a foreign language by talking small steps. Some people think they can learn a foreign language in thirty days, and they become very discouraged when they can’t. Learning 5 words a day and learning to use them actively is far better than Learning 30 and forgetting them the next day. But people many have different learning styles.

2. 学生问:What do you mean by “learning styles?”

电脑答:I mean different ways of learning. Some prefer to see models of the patterns they are expected to learn; others see the hearing instructions over reading them. All preferences are determined by factors so just character, culture and past experiences.

3. 学生问:How did you learn a foreign language?

电脑答:I learned while doing things. Moving around as well as trying to learn helps me. I often recite aloud the words when I cook potatoes and onions for breakfast in the morning.

五答

1. 录音问:What is Dr. Brown’s book about?

学生答:It’s about how to learn a foreign language.

2. 录音问:How long has the woman been learning Spanish?

学生答:4 years.

3. 录音问:What is Dr. Brown’s basic suggestion on learning a foreign language?

学生答:To learn a foreign language by taking small steps.

4. 录音问:What factors determine one’s learning styles?

Locked In

Last summer vacation, Tom took a part-time job in a company. His office was very small at the end of the second floor. One Friday evening, he finished his work and went out of his office. It’s already six o’clock. He looked around and found everybody had gone home. The building was very quiet, and the main lights were all out. He ran down to see whether he could find somebody, but it was too late. The doors all locked, and he was locked in the building. Tom went back to his office to phone the doorkeeper, but the phone did not work. He tried another one, and that phone did not work, either. Tom realized the phones in the office had been locked for the weekend. He thought, “I had to be here for the weekend”. Suddenly he remembered that in the reception room there was a phone that was always on. So he rushed to the reception room. The door was locked, too. So he went into the room through the window, and phoned the doorkeeper. Half an hour later, the doorkeeper came, and Tome went home.

The Road tells us stories of cities, stories of wars, all passed on through travelers’ tales. The hardest part of the Silk Road journey was crossing the vast expanse of desert, called “The Sea of Death”. The Mogao Cave is an intersection between the edge of the Silk Road and starting point of the “Desert of Death”. The numerous stories of the Silk Road tale were hidden in the desert. The desert sand wind has two different sides, and the desert does not leave any traces. However, uncovering the Silk Road’s stories is similar to counting the grains of sand in the desert.

Two Problems

During his first year at university, one day, Tom arrived late at one of Professor Brown’s courses. On the blackboard were two math problems. He thought they were their homework and copied them down. A few days later, Tom went to Professor Brown’s office and apologized to him for taking so long to finish the homework. The problems seemed to be a little harder to do than usual. He asked Professor Brown if he still wanted his homework. He told Tom to throw it on the desk covered with a lot of papers. Tom feared that his homework would be there forever.

One Sunday morning, about six weeks later, Tom had a heavy knock at the front door. It was Professor Brown. He rushed in with Tom’s homework in his hand. He said to Tom excitedly, “I’ve just written an introduction for one of your papers. Read it so that we can get it published.” For a minute, Tom had no idea what he was talking about. Tom was later told that the two problems he copied down as his homework were two famous math problems that had never been worked out. For the first time, Tom realized that the two problems have something special in them.

John and Mary’s Skiing Holiday

Both John and Mary love skiing. After they got married, they went to Canada for their skiing holiday. They had planned it for some time but they didn’t enjoy it very much because the things didn’t go as they planned. First the taxi to the airport didn’t come, and they had to ask their friend to take them to the airport. Fortunately, they got there just in time. They got on the plane and then discovered the pilot was sick and they had to wait another two hours for another pilot. The plane finally took off, and they arrived in Canada several hours later. By the time they got to the hotel they were very tired and annoyed, but at least they had arrived. The holiday was beginning. Then on the third day, John broke his shoulder while skiing and couldn’t ski for the rest of the week, so they wanted to go back home, but before they left, they got a phone call from the neighbor who was looking after their car. The night before the neighbor noticed that someone had broken that car window, so he went to check the house the door was open. The thief had taken everything including all their wedding presents.

W: Doctor Brown, is it true that English people prefer old things to new ones?

M: I suppose so, the English are very fond of traditions.

W: I was thinking more about houses and other things.

M: It depends on what kind of old things you are talking about. I would always prefer to live in an old house with a garden than some new one. I used to lived in a house that is over one hundred years old. It was really something I am proud of, so yes, on the whole, I think the English do prefer old things.

W: Why do you think that is the case?

M: Well, a lot of people feel not all things were much better made. It also goes better with old style houses. We think lots of modern furniture is poorly made.

三问

1.英国人喜欢旧车吗?

Q:Does the British people like cars?

A:In fact, we love new cars. In England, people care much about first letter of their car number. 2.你什么意思呢?

Q: What do you mean?

A:In August, each year, there is a new letter before the number on the registration plate. For example, my car is an “M” registration, which means it was made in 2004. People love to have a really recent letter on their number plate. An English person would buy a brand new car and drive it if they had a lot of money.

3.英国人不太在乎穿什么衣服,对吗?

Q: The British people care little about clothes, do they?

A: We generally don’t care much about clothes, some are even quite proud that they find their clothes in second-hand shops. I guess this is mainly because in England what really matters is not clothes but background.

2018 D Part A The wind has had some of its most dramatic effects on human history when it interacts with the energy of the oceans. It’s an interaction that can have major long term consequences. But it can also bring short term disaster. The sea acts as a main store of the sun’s heat. There’s more energy in the top 3 meters of the ocean than the whole of the atmosphere. By pumping this energy into the air, the ocean is constantly influencing the wind. A principle that is demonstrated each year: the hotter the ocean, the faster the air above rises. Part B 视频对话 W: Hi, Tom. How was your summer vacation? M: Good, I went to Beijing in August. W: Oh, how did you like it? M: Well, I’ve been there several times. This time I had a three-day tour and I noticed something different. I like it better now. W: Really? What is the difference? M: I’ve seen a lot of fantastic office buildings and some of them are of eco-design. 1. 那是什么意思? What does that mean? 电脑回答It means that the designs combines environmentally friendly ideas. I visited one building with eco-designs. They helped cut energy cost greatly. Last year, that building saved up to 20% energy cost, compared to other ordinary buildings. Thanks to the various wonderful design. 2. 让你印象最深刻的设计是什么? What design impressed you most? 电脑回答Well, I think what impresses me most is the high-tech curtain wall. For one thing, it is used to adjust temperature automatically in the building. The indoor temperature will not be affected by conditions outside. For another, it enables 90% of the office area to enjoy natural sunlight, which makes people feel like closer to nature. 3. 这栋大楼里还有其他新设计吗? Are there any other new designs in this building? 电脑回答Yes, of course. For example, there is only one elevator in the building. Many staff have to walk to their offices. At first some of them complained, but gradually they realized walking is pretty good exercise to keep them fit. Another example is that the parking spaces are reserved mostly for small cars, so the use of small cars is encouraged. 1. When did Tom visit Beijing?

Yet its story is one of the least understood. But what is now the site of a spendid palace was once open countryside. As royal residences go, Buckingham Palace is something of a newcomer.
