My first child was born in 1986 and two and a half years later, I had my daughter. All I ever did from then on was taking care of kids and our home. Throughout those early years, whenever I went somewhere and was around other adults, I would be asked what I did. Far too many people had the same reaction when I told them I was a stay-at-home mom. It made me very angry at such type of response as “Oh, you really don't do anything”. I worked hard as a mom and I took my “job” very seriously! Raising children is doing something and is extremely important.

So that's when I decided to find a way to deal with these ignorant people and to boost my self-esteem(自尊) at the same time. On many of the social occasions, some of the “professional” women would give me their business card as if to show me that they actually did something and had some important title. I decided to give myself a very impressive, important-sounding title and then make up a business card to hand out.

I thought about what I actually did as a mom over the next few days. I took special care to make sure I was giving my children the best care, instruction and information I possibly could. It was my job to teach my kids: how to speak, how to eat, how to dress, how to get along with others, and so on. I specialized in the academic, social and emotional development of human beings — my kids! After reading my brief overview of my own job, I came up with my new, impressive title: Human Development Specialist.

At every opportunity, I handed out my card. 99.99% of the time, people were obviously impressed! It really made me feel better. Most people made a guess at what a “Human Development Specialist” is or does, and I just let them think whatever they wanted to.

24. We can learn from the first paragraph that the writer ________.

A. had a good job before she had children

B. in her opinion , looking after children at home is of great importance.

C. couldn't find a satisfying job

D. didn't know how to get on with other women

25. What did the writer do to improve her self-esteem?

A. She made herself a business card.

B. She pretended to have a good job.

C. She started a business at home.

D. She told others how she was ignored.

26. What was other people's reaction to the writer's title?

A. Most of them felt proud.

B. Most of them were excited.

C. Most of them were disappointed.

D. Most of them were impressed and puzzled.

27. What would be the best title for the passage?

A. Family Is More Important Than Work

B. Being a Mom Means Giving up Many Things

C. Being a Full-time Mom Is Important

D. People Have Equal Rights

Kids are natural scientists. That may be why they ask so many questions.

Younger kids take up science and math with amazing enthusiasm, yet as they get older they often lose their excitement. Children look on scientific exploration as play, but as they get older they start to connect it with big heavy books, long worksheets and a lot of really confusing words.

What a tragedy! We had their attention, they were listening, they were participating, they were learning and then we lost it to boredom.

We need our kids to play more. More play brings up basic scientific concepts. Being familiar with basic scientific concepts brings about exploration which leads to research. Once they are researching, they are completely into the learning.

My boys built a small 9-hole golf course next to our driveway one day. It was a great product of science. They dug out the holes and channels to guide the golf ball. They played with architecture with a series of pipes they had found in the garage. They tested speed and momentum(动量) by creating one of the holes across the driveway. They experienced biology when deciding which front yard plants could be used as a part of the course and which needed to be pulled up.

If I had sent them out to the yard to build a 9-hole golf course,it would have never happened. It was because it was their idea that it worked. I try to tell them some of the concepts after the fact. When they

ask about something,I try to relate it back to something they have built, experienced, or felt. I try to give them a vocabulary around what they already know.

An afternoon can change the way kids look at the world. Not bad for a day of play.

28. What can we learn about kids' attitudes towards science from the first three paragraphs?

A. Kids think they are born to work as scientists.

B. Younger kids begin to learn science on purpose.

C. Older kids often link science with boring things.

D. Children's taking an interest in science is a tragedy.

29.By building the small golf course, the writer's boys learnt about all of the following things

EXCEPT .

A. speed

B. momentum

C. biology

D. agriculture

30. If the writer had forced the boys to build a small golf course, they might have _______.

A. asked her some related scientific concepts

B. made a better golf course than the one they had built

C. asked their friends to help them with the work

D. got bored and refused to follow the writer's directions

31. In which part of a newspaper is the article probably included?

A. Architecture.

B. Education.

C. Health.

D. Sports.

D

In fairy tales, it's usually the princess that needs protecting. At Google in Silicon Valley, the princess is the one defending the castle. Parisa Tabriz is a 31-year-old with perhaps the most unique job title in engineering—“Google Security Princess”. Her job is to hack into the most popular web browser(浏览器)on the planet, trying to find weaknesses in the system before the “black hats” do. To defeat Google's attackers, Tabriz must firstly think like them.

Tabriz's role has evolved dramatically in the eight years since she first started working at Google. Back then, the young graduate from Illinois University was one of 50 security engineers—today there are over 500.

Cybercrime(网络犯罪)has come a long way in the past decade—from the Nigerian Prince Scam to credit card theft. Tabriz's biggest concern now is the people who find bugs in Google's software, and sell

the information to governments or criminals. To fight against this, the company has set up a Vulnerability Rewards Program, paying anywhere from $100 to $ 20,000 for reported mistakes.

It's a world away from Tabriz's computer-free childhood home in Chicago. The daughter of an Iranian-American doctor father, and Polish-American nurse mother, Tabriz had little contact with computers until she started studying engineering at college. Gaze across a line-up of Google security staff today and you'll find women like Tabriz are few and far between(稀少的)—though in the last few years she has hired more female tech geniuses. She admits there's an obvious gender disequilibrium in Silicon Valley.

Funnily enough, during training sessions Tabriz first asks new colleagues to hack into not a computer, but a vending machine. Tabriz's job is as much about technological know-how(专门知识)as understanding the psychology of attackers.

32. What can we learn about Tabriz from the passage?

A. She was the first female engineer at Google.

B. She must think differently so as to defeat the attackers.

C. Her job relates to not only technology but also psychology.

D. Her frequent contact with computers in childhood benefits her a lot.

33. Why has Google set up a Vulnerability Rewards Program?

A. To protect Google against cybercrime.

B. To monitor the normal operation of Google.

C. To help the government locate the cybercriminals.

D. To raise people's awareness of personal information safety.

34. What does the underlined word “disequilibrium” in Paragraph 4 refer to?

A. imbalance.

B. preference.

C. difference.

D. variety.

35. Which of the following could be the best title of this passage?

A. What leads to cybercrime

B. The “Security Princess” who guards Google

C. Measures taken by Google to protect its users

D. How to become an excellent security engineer

第二节:读后续写(满分25分)

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的

词数应为150左右。

Twenty years ago, I drove a taxi for a living. One night I went to pick up a passenger at 2:30 a. m. When I arrived to collect, I found the building was dark except for a single light in a ground floor window.

I walked to the door and knocked, "Just a minute," answered a weak, elderly voice.

After a long time, the door opened. A small woman in her eighties stood before me. By her side was a small suitcase.

I took the suitcase to the car, and then returned to help the woman. She took my arm and we walked slowly towards the car.

She kept thanking me for my kindness. "It's nothing," I told her. "I just try to treat my passengers the way I would want my mother treated."

"Oh, you're such a good man." She said. When we got into the taxi, she gave me an address, and then asked, "Could you drive through downtown?"

"It's not the shortest way," I answered quickly.

"Oh, I'm in no hurry," she said. "I'm on my way to a hospice(临终医院). I don't have any family left. The doctor says I don't have very long. "

I quietly reached over and shut off the meter (计价器). For the next two hours, we drove through the city. She showed me the building where she had once worked, the neighborhood where she had lived, and the furniture shop that had once been a ballroom where she had gone dancing as a girl.

Sometimes she'd ask me to slow down in front of a particular building and would sit staring into the darkness, saying nothing.

At dawn, she suddenly said, "I'm tired. Let's go now." We drove in silence to the address she had given me.

"How much do I owe you?" she asked.

"Nothing." I said.

"You have to make a living," she answered. "Oh, there are other passengers," I answered. She said thanks to me, but she looked so sad.

Paragraph 1:

Almost without thinking, I bent and gave her a hug.

Paragraph 2:

I was on my way to visit her.
