Dear David,

Knowing that you are enthusiastic about Chinese folk culture, I’d like to invite you to take part in the Folk Festival to be held in my city.

The festival is scheduled from August 11 to 17 in the Folk Custom Park, where you can see paper cutting, martial art and lion dancing and enjoy the genuine Chinese food. As for accommodation, I hope you can stay in my home so that you can experience more about our daily life.

I’m sure you will have a good time in China. Looking forward to your reply.

Yours,

Li Hua

Karson stared at the blank name line for a moment. He knew his plan wouldn’t be so great if he won with a ticket that didn’t belong to him. So he walked up to his teacher. “Miss Evans, I happened to find this ticket on the floor near the bookcase.I think the one who lost it will look for it. And these are mine,” he said, dropping his six tickets into the box. When he turned around to leave, the teacher stopped him.

“Karson, I’d like you to have another ticket!”Miss Evans said. Karson was amazed and wondered why. Miss Evans smiled and signed to the class to quiet down, “Karson handed in the

golden ticket he had just found. I think he is honest and deserves another one!” The class burst into loud applause. Karson happily went back to his seat, eagerly expecting the ticket drawing. He still wanted his name to be picked, but he would feel OK even if it wasn’t. After all, making the right choice did make him feel great!

W: Oh, that’s good! He sounds like a good teacher.

M: Absolutely! If you were a student and came to our class, I’m sure you would like him.

Text 10

M: Today I’m going to talk about gesture, and how we use our hands when we talk. Most of what I’m going to say is based on research done by Professor Susan Meadow. She’s written about her work in a book called Hearing Gesture: How Our Hands Help Us Think. It’s on your book list. Professor Meadow has spent a long time studying gestures. We usu ally don’t even notice how we’re using our hands when we talk. But our hands and our eyes and even how we move our bodies all help us to communicate.

The first point I’d like to make is that everybody gestures, including even people who have been blind from birth. So even someone who has never seen a gesture will use their hands when they’re speaking. So scientists have concluded that gesturing is not something that we learn from other people. It’s something that we do naturally, and that we’re all born wi th.
