阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

You do not need every word to understand the meaning of what you read . In fact , too much emphasis (强调) on separate words both slows your speed and reduces your comprehension .

First , any habit which slows down your silent reading to the speed at which you speak , or read aloud , is inefficient . If you point to each word as you read , or move your head , or form the words with your lips , you read poorly . Less obvious habits also hold back reading efficiency (效率) . One is “saying” each word silently by moving your tongue or throat ; another is “ hearing” each word as you read .

These are habits which should have been outgrown long ago . The beginning reader is learning how letters can make words , how written words are pronounced , and how sentences are put together . Your reading purpose is quite different ; it is to understand meaning .

It has been supposed that up to 75% of the words in English sentences are not really necessary for expressing the meaning . The secret of silent reading is to find out those key words and phrases which carry the thought , and to pay less attention to words which exist only for grammatical completeness .

An efficient reader can grasp the meaning fr om a page at least twice as fast as he can read the page aloud . He takes in a whole phrase or thought unit at a time . If he “says” or “hears” words to himself , they are selected ones , said for emphasis .

56.This passage is mainly about .

A.improving eye movement B.reading more widely

C.changing poor r eading habits D.reading as fast as you can

57.Saying each word to yourself as you read .

A.improves comprehension B.increases reading speed

C.gives too much emphasis D.reduces reading efficiency

58.Our reading purpose should be .

A.to understand all the words B.to make fewer eye movements

C.to understand meaning D.to understand the grammatical structures 59.While reading , efficient readers usually .

A.move their eyes quickly B.take in whole phrases or thought units

C.point at key words D.read only important points for speed

B

Despite their name , the Want Family don’t want much . They want enough money for a nice house and a holiday every year . But they don’t’ want to be milliona ires . They want to do well at their jobs . But they don’t want to be the big boss . They do want to spend time improving their garden , visiting their families and taking their two kids , Nicolas and Leuan , to McDonald’s for lunch . But they don’t want t o be famous .

The Wants just want to be normal. That’s why they are famous . They have been selected as the most normal family in Britain . After a six-month search for the most ordinary family in Britain , the Wants were selected from hundreds of applicants .

Jo hn wants a job in marketing for a food company , Claire has a part-time job renting out children’s play equipment . John doesn’t understand why they were chosen to represent ordinary English families . How are they normal ?

That is not a bad question . Nearl y ev eryone does some of the things that the Wants do .But very few people do all of them . There have been great changes in the social structure of British life . It is becoming more common for people to have children when they are older than the Wants , and to have one child instead of two . A household with two children may be headed by a single parent , usually the mother . Or perhaps dad and mum are still together , but not married . Or maybe dad and mum are married . Dad goes out to work and mum stays at home and looks after the kids . They have traditional values —Every weekend the whole family goes to church .

“What we have here is not an average family , but a traditional family,” says Cary Cooper , professor of philosophy at Lancaster Un iversity . “There is no such thing as a normal family

anymore , in the way there was 20 or 30 years ago . Of course the Wants exist , but for what do we need to celebrate them ?” Perhaps because we think normal families are an endangered species . Examples of them have to be preserved (保护)to show future generations .

A.they represent traditional Engish families B.they don’t want much

To understand the marketing concept , it is only necessary to understand the difference between marketing and selling . Not too many years ago , most industries fixed their attention mainly on the production of goods , and then depended on “persuasive salesmanship” to move as much of these goods as possible and then change them into money .

Marketing , on the other hand , focuses on the wants of customers . It begins with first understanding the preferences and demands of consumers and then producing goods that will satisfy them . This eye-on-the-consumer way is known as the marketing concept , which simply means that instead of trying to sell whatever is easiest to produce or buy for resale , the makers and dealers first try to find out what the consumer wants to buy .

This concept does not mean that business is friendly or that consumer satisfaction is more

important than profit in a company . Successful businessmen and producers , however , recognize that the surest route to profit is through understanding and satisfying customers . A striking example of the importance of satisfying customers presented itself in mid-1985 , when Coca-Cola changed the flavor of its drink . The non-acceptance of the new flavor by a large majority of the public brought about quick return of the Classic Coke , which was then marketed alongside the new . King Customer ruled !

64.The marketing concept discussed in the passage is .

A.the practice of turning goods into money

B.the customer-centered way

C.a way of making more goods

D.a form of persuasive salesmanship

65.What mattered most for producers before the marketing concept was widely accepted ?

A.Needs and understanding of the market . B.Production and profit of a company .

C.Satisfaction of customers . D.Preference of businessmen . 66.According to the passage , the underlined word “move” (paragraph1) means .

A.sell B.change C.produce D.consume 67.What does the return of the Classic Coke best show ?

A.Traditional goods have a stronger attraction to the majority of people .

B.It takes time for a new product to be accepted by the public .

C.Consumers with different tastes are often difficult to please .

D.Products must be designed to suit the taste of the consumers .

To Lauder Exchange Program :

Gaia Filicori was a student in my Humanities class for the 2002-2003 year . From the first week of classes it was obvious that Gaia was an excellent student and a very sociable young lady . She was always eager to join in class discussions . Gaia’s ability to communicate her own ideas is a skill that many of us work for a very long time to achieve .

Gaia also has a deep curiosity about the world around her . The simple fact that she desires to spend a year in another country is proof enough . I have also seen her show this curiosity in class . She asked some of the most interesting and thoughtful questions of any of the students in her

class . When others were content to accept a point , Gaia would see from a new angle that none of us had tried .

As a student in Humanities , Gaia was requ ired to complete a group project . The project was to write a page for a Humanities textbook using text and multi-media . It was a challenging task and Gaia’s group was experiencing some difficulties . Yet , they had an easier time of it because they did not hesitate to come to me with their problems and try to work them out . As a result Gaia and her group had one of the more successful projects . The ability needed to recognize a problem and ask for help to solve it will be of great value if she is selected to be a Lauder Exchange student .

Gala’s interest in the world a round her will serve her well as a Lauder Exchange student . The ease with which she gets along with others and the ease with which she makes new friends will also help her as she tries to learn in a foreign setting . I have no doubts that Gaia would be a wonderful representative of the Lauder Program , Stuyvesant High School , and the United States .

We sometimes think humans are the only species which can bear anxiety , but stress seems to affect the immune (免疫) system of lower animals too . In one experiment , for example , behavioral scientist Mark Lauden , at the University of Denver , gave mild electric shocks to 24 rats . Half of the animals could turn off the electricity by turning a wheel in their cage , while the other half could not . The rats in the two groups were paired so that each time one rat turned the wheel it protected both itself and its helpless partner from the shock. Lauden found that the immune reaction was below normal in the helpless rats but not in those that could turn off the electricity . What he has proved is that lack of control over an event , not the experience itself , is what weakens the immune system .

Other researchers agree. Jay Weiss , a scientist at Duke University School of Medicine , has shown that animals who are allowed to control unpleasant stimuli (刺激)don’t develop sleep disorder or changes in brain chemistry of stressed rats . But if the animals are faced with situations they have no control over, they later behave passively when faced with experiences they can control . Such findings make researchers believe that the experience or feeling of helplessness is one of the most harmful factors in stress.

One of the most surprising examples of how the mind can change the immune reaction was discovered by chance. In 1995 Robert Ader at the University of Rochester School of Medicine experimented on mice to avoid saccharin (糖精)by feeding them at the same time with the sweetener and a drug that while harming their immune systems caused stomach upsets . Connecting the saccharin with stomach pains , the mice quickly learned to avoid the sweetener . In order to get rid of this dislike for the sweetener, Ader fed the animals with saccharin again , this

time without the drug , and was astonished to find that those mice that had received the highest amount of sweetener the first time died . He believed that saccharin alone weakened their immune systems enough to kill them.

72.Lauden’s experiment showed that the immune system of those rats who could turn off the electricity .

A.was strengthened B.was not affected

C.was changed D.was weakened

73.According to the passage , the experience of helplessness causes rats to .

A.try to control unpleasant stimuli B.turn off the electricity

C.behave passively I controllable situations D.become harmful

74.The reason why the mice in Ader’s experiment avoided saccharin was that .

A.they disliked its taste B.it affected their immune systems

C.it led to stomach pains D.they connected it with stomach pains 75.According to the passage , the most probable reason for the death of the mice in Ader’s experiment was that .

A.they had been weakened by the saccharin

B.the sweetener was poisonous to them

C.the immune systems had been changed by the mind

D.they had taken too much sweetener during the first experiment

Dear Sir,

I’m a senior middle school student. Whenever I go to school, I can see some people breaking traffic rules. For example, some passers-by and cyclists often go into the crossroads when the traffic lights are still red, and some cars exceed the speed limit when they run on busy streets if there are no policemen working there . I hate these offenders but I can’t do anything to stop them.

I think it is the duty of every citizen to obey the traffic rules . I suggest that we have more policemen or assistants working at the crossroads and on the busy streets. Whoever breaks the

rules should be fined or punished. In this way, they will not break the traffic rules again.

Yours sincerely,

Li Hua
