Switzerland is famous for its watches. However, this country didn’t invent the watch. It was the British who did it. Here is a story of how the watch was brought to Switzerland.

Many years ago, an Englishman was traveling to Italy, On his way he stopped in a small town in South Switzerland. This Englishman traveled in a carriage inside which there was a carriage watch. This was the earliest kind of watch. A native shop assistant happened to see the watch. He wondered what it was and asked the Englishman about it, “It is a carriage watch,” said the man. “This machine tells the time but now it isn’t working.”

At once the shop assistant offered to try to repair it. So the traveler handed him the watch. The assistant was a very wise man. So it was not surprising that he managed to repair it. He even remembered how it was made. As soon as the traveler had gone on his journey, he made a watch exactly the same type.

Thus the watch-making was started in Switzerland. Today Swiss watches are sold in stores all over the world.

A surprising number of students will do anything to make the grade. What’s behind this epidemic (流行病)?

There’s plenty to suggest that academic cheating is an epidemic in the country’s high schools and colleges. Consider a few examples: nine students at the University of Maryland were caught receiving text-messaged answers on their cell phones during an exam; a Texas teen was charged with selling stolen test answers --- by illegally affixing a decoding device (解密仪器)to a teacher’s computer ---to fellow students; seven Kansas State students in one class were charged with plagiarizing (抄袭)papers from the Internet.

Beyond the above examples, experts point to a lot of information, much of which is from students themselves, which shows cheating is common. A report showed 70 percent of the students at 60 colleges admitted to some cheating the previous year; one in four admitted to engaging in serious cheating (copying from another student, using hidden notes, or helping someone else cheat).

A recent Gallup survey proved those findings. Polling one group of 13-to 17-year-olds in and another in , Gallup reported that 65 percent cite “a great deal” or “a fair amount” of cheating in their schools. About half said they’d cheated on a test at some point.

Cheating isn’t n ew. As long as there have been rules, there have been people intent on breaking them. What’s surprising now is how widespread and shameless the practice has become.

“Before, people who cheated were in the minority, and they kept it a secret, even from thei r friends,” he says. “Now they are in the majority, and they are bold about it. Today, if you ask kids about cheating, you will get such thoughtful but disrespectful attitudes that the statistics are almost unimportant.”

Kansas State professor Phil Anderso n agrees: “Many of our students have the attitude of ‘I’ll do whatever I have to do to get ahead’. It’s endemic.”

Not everyone likes organized sports or team sports. If this sounds like you, don’t sweat it. We’re going to talk about what keeps some kids from liking sports. With a few changes, you might find out that there is a sport out there that you could like. But if not, we’ll suggest other fun ways to stay active.

Sometimes, kids feel that they don’t like sorts because they may not understand how to play them or they haven’t had much practice doing them. Sports can seem comp licated (复杂的)because of all the rules and special equipment. Even the fields and courts they are played on come in different shapes and sizes and have confusing-looking lines drawn.

People spend many years learning about favorite sports and practicing how to do them well. So don’t feel bad if you don’t know the difference between a “corner kick” and a “goal kick” in the soccer. If you want to learn more about a sport, you might ask your mom or dad about camps or programs that introduce kids to new sports. It may be better than just joining a team that starts playing games right away without much explaining first.

Gym class and intramural (校内的) programs at school also can be way to try new sports. Another way to learn about a sport is to watch instructional videos or DVDs or refer to library books that explain the rules and offer suggestions for kids learning to play it.

If you have an older friend or family member who’s good at a sport, you might ask him or her to help you practice. Some sports are just easy to understand, even if you never want to play on a competitive team. For example, you might play softball or volleyball, just for fun, at

a summer picnic.

58. The underlined word “sweat” in the first paragraph means _____.

A. worry about

B. work hard at

C. practice repeatedly

D. have drops of liquid

59. According to Paragraph 2, kids don’t like sports probably because _____.

A. they can’t find proper fields

B. they can’t find good equipment

C. they haven’t enough time to play them

D.they don’t know how to play them

60. Before you try a new sport, you’d better do the following EXCEPT _____.

A. look up some library books

B. watch instructional videos or DVDs carefully

C. attend gym class and school programs

D. practice it repeatedly at home

61. Which of the following is NOT true according to this passage?

A. Making a few changes is necessary for you to like sports.

B. You can ask others for help to play a sport well.

C. You must refuse to play any kinds of sports you don’t like.

D. You may play sports only for fun in your spare time.

1970 was World Conservation(保护)Year. The United Nations wanted everyone to know that the world is in danger. They hoped that governments would act quickly in order to conserve nature. Here is one example of the problem. At one time there were 1,300 different plants, trees and flowers in Holland but now only 866 remain. The others have been destroyed by modern man and his technology. We are changing the earth, the air and water, and everything that grows and lives. We can’t live without these things. It we continue like this, we shall destroy ourselves.

What will happen in the future? Perhaps it is more important to ask “What must we do now?” The people who will be living in the world of tomorrow are the young of today. A lot of them know that conservation is necessary. Many are helping to save our world. They plant trees, build bridges across rivers in forests, and so on. In a small town in the United States a large group of girls cleaned the banks of 11 kilometers of their river. Young people may hear about conservation through a record c alled “No one’s going to change our world”. it was made by the Beatles, Cliff Richard and other singers. The money from it will help to conserve wild animals.

VII.Dear Chen Li,

I’m glad to hear from you. You asked me abou t the difficulties you may meet with when you get here in UK. Now, I’d like to tell you something about it.

First, you may have the problem about the language you think you are well prepared. You may find it difficult to communicate with the natives, because many of them have a strong accent. Besides, you may not get used to the western food here or ev en hate to have it. What’s more, you may feel lonely and miss your family and friends, especially in the very beginning.

However, you needn’t worry about it. Several weeks later, you will get used to everything here and love the place, and I’ll a lso try my best to help you when necessary.

Best wishes!

Yours,

Wang Pin
