too much tourism can be a problem. if tourism grows too quickly, people must leave other jobs to work in the tourism industry. this means that other parts of the country’s economy can suffer.

on the other hand, if there is not enough tourism, people can lose jobs. businesses can also lose money. it costs a lot of money to build large hotels, airports, air terminals, first-class roads and other support facilities needed by tourist attractions. for example, a major international-class tourism hotel can cost as much as 50 thousand dollars per room to build. if this room is not used most of the time, the owners of the hotel will lose money.

building a hotel is just a beginning. there must be many support facilities as well, including roads to get to the hotel, electricity, sewers to handle waste, and water. all of these support facilities cost money.

for years it has been possible to set up cameras to take pictures of cars as they speed along highways, jump lights or drive too fast

down the street.

however, even if the pictures are taken automatically, someone still has to do all the paperwork of sending out fines. but now a

british company called eev has come up with a computerized video system that can do it all automatically.

they suggest that all number plates have a bar code(条形码)as well as the usual number. the bar codes are just stripes of lines like those you see on food packets but bigger. eevs high speed video camera system can read a bar-coded number plate even if the car is doing over 100 miles per hour. the computer controlling the system could then use the information from the bar code to find out the name and address of the driver(from the car records),print out the fine and send it off automatically. the inventors also suggest that the

system should watch traffic to help catch stolen cars.

the new electronic system could be watching everyone that passes the cameras!besides, some people will be very unhappy to realize that with the new system the police could find out where a particular car has been.

答案:b 由文中第一段内容“set up cameras to take pictures of cars as they speed along highways, jump lights or drive too

fast down the street”

a.牌照

答案:c 由文中第三段内容“all number plates have a bar code”,“eevs high speed video camera system can read a bar-coded number plate”

答案:d由文中“come up with a computerized video system ”,“ the new electronic system ”,“big brother is watching you”

答案: b 由文中第三段最后一句“the inventors also suggest that the system should watch traffic to help catch stolen cars.”

the fourth and most beautiful thing about hawaii is the people who live there. the hawaiians never rush, and perhaps this is because they care more for human life than they care for the machine. there is an old hawaiian law that a man can go to sleep in the middle of the road if he wants to. what makes the people of hawaii so beautiful is their feeling about people. there are 64 different combinations of races on the islands, and they a ll live in peace. they believe ―above all nations is humanity.‖ that is the most beautiful thing of all.

passage four

there is a measurable relation between how much a person learns and his attitude toward the subject to be learned. when faced with a difficult learning task, one path to success is to concentrate on the positive aspects of the subject matter. if a student has a boring teacher, one solution is to look for the positive aspects of completing the course, regardless of how boring the teacher happens to be. to accomplish this might require a private tutor or some independent reading, but with the right attitude, success is possible.

over-achievers – students who do better than their test scores show – usually have a positive interest toward learning. they may learn some things more slowly, and they may make more efforts, but, to compensate (补偿), they are often better at applying what they have learned. as long as they do not have emotional problems, they are successful.

under-achievers – those who function below their ability shown by test scored – often tend to allow a few negative factors to affect them. because of their negative attitudes, they sometimes become unfairly critical of teachers. they allow themselves to get bored when it is not necessary. in short,

their attitudes often cause them to learn less than over-achievers.

if you learn to replace a negative attitude toward learning with something more positive, you are on the road to achieving almost any goal you desire. for example, if you realize a personal computer with a word processor would improve your performance, but have an attitude that keeps telling you that a computer is difficult to operate, you tend to make all kinds of excuses. in short, you resist making full use of a terrific tool, simply because your negative attitude prevents you from learning.

a. look for a new course.

b. be critical of the teacher.

c. complete the course with a good score.

d. have a right attitude toward the teacher. a. their test scores b. their judgment of others

c. their attitudes toward learning

d. their skills in using computers

33. the underlined phrase function below their ability shown

by test scoresa. often get low scores in tests

b. do worse in actual learning than in tests

c. usually do better in tests than the over-achievers

d. are always slow in learning and have to make more efforts a. finding excuses helps in learning b. to react negatively can be harmful

c. hard-working is the key to success

d. making use of the computer is important

a. attitudes play an important role in learning.

b. students should learn how to use personal computers.

c. teachers are not so important in the learning process.

d. there are many differences between over-and under-achievers.

in the united states, it is important to be on time for an appointment, a class, a meeting, etc. however, this may not be true in all countries. an american professor discovered this difference while teaching a class in a brazilian(巴西的)university. the two-hour class was scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. and end at 12. on the first day, when the professor arrived on time, no one was in the classroom. many students came after 10 a.m. several arrived after 10:30 a.m. two students came after 11 a.m. although all the students greeted the professor as they arrived, few apologized for their lateness. were these students being rude? he decided to study the students’ behavior.

a lunch appointment with a friend, the average american student showed clearly lateness as 19 minutes after the agreed time. on the other hand, the average brazilian student would be 33 minutes late.

in an american university, students are expected to arrive at the appointed hour. in contrast, in brazil, neither the teacher nor the students always arrive at the appointed hour. classes not only begin at the scheduled time in the united states, but also end at the scheduled time. in the brazilian class, only a few students left the class at 12:00; many remained past 12:30 to discuss the class and ask more questions. arriving late may not be very important in brazil, neither is staying late.

passage three

questions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage.

many chinese high school students are tired of their parents’ nagging(唠叨). they think their parents’ high expectations are burdens. but a recent survey found that they are much luckier than teenagers in japan, korea and the us, who also find their parents annoying. the parents of foreign teens have even higher expectations of their children than chinese parents. 62% of chinese fathers and 66% of chinese mothers

have high expectations of their children at high school age. they rank third and fourth among fathers and mothers of four countries. japanese mothers top the list with 76% having high expectations, while 70% of korean fathers expect too much of their children. japanese teens are the most deeply troubled by their parents constantly comparing them with other kids.

the survey also found that chinese students are the most satisfied with their parents. they blame them less, and also receive less criticism than those from the other three countries. however, satisfaction doesn’t mean they are happy. of the four countries, chinese children are not the happiest at home. they get the least praise from their parents and they don’t feel able to express their unhappiness to them,

results from the survey show that in spite of different cultural backgrounds, generation gaps exist in many countries other than china. it’s even bigger elsewhere. it is said that chinese parents are used to burying their feelings deep in their hearts, which makes their children not want to talk

openly with them. this survey shows that both parents and teenagers in china need to work on communicating and understanding each other.

besides their family life, students were also questioned about their opinions on themselves and others in the world. us students showed more ―individuality,‖ with 88% agreeing

that ―people should follow their own interests instead of

those of others‖. koreans were the next most independent, followed by the chinese and japanese.

21. the text is mainly about________.

b) the different generation gaps in different countries

c) the comparison of students’ family situations in different countries

d) the relationship between children and parents

22. japanese students think it most troublesome that their parents______.

Part I Reading Comprehension (30%) Directions: There are three passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and blacken the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet. Passage 1 Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage: Jarden Zinc (锌) Products, a large zinc plant a few miles outside Greeneville, Tennessee, has a special claim. Since 1982, it has been the only supplier of penny blanks for the U.S. Mint (铸币厂). It's a good business for Jarden-since 2000, the company has earned more than $ 800 million. But it may not be a good deal for the U.S. (76) The value of the penny has been dropping for years. In 2006, it began to cost more than a penny to make a penny. It now costs 2 C to produce a 1 C coin. Many countries have stopped using pennies. Is it time for the U.S. to do the same? Jarden and the zinc industry are fighting to keep the penny. Since 2006, Jarden has given $1.2 million to Americans for Common Cents (ACC). The group's mission is to keep the penny in use. Mark Weller is ACC's executive director. He argues that there are three main reasons for keeping the penny: Without it, we would become more reliant on the five-cent coin, which also has problems; charities (慈善机构) that depend on penny drives would not be able to raise as much money; and a 2012 survey shows that 67% of Americans want to keep the penny. (77) Many people surveyed said they feared they would end up paying more for products. Many experts disagree with ACC, They point to the dozens of countries that have gotten rid of their lowest-value coins without raising prices for consumers. And charities don't seem too concerned either. President Barack Obama says the mint could explore using cheaper metals to make pennies. Steel is less expensive than zinc. Pennies are 97.5% zinc and 2.5% copper. But no matter what it is made of, the penny's days may be numbered. Most in-store purchases are now made with credit cards, not cash. Is it time for a change? 1. what is the main idea of the passage? A. Many countries are trying to reduce the cost of making coins. B. These days a penny made is a penny wasted. C. There is disagreement over whether the U.S. should stop using pennies. D. Many countries have stopped using pennies. 2.The mission of ACC is to ______. A. conduct online surveys B. lower the production costs of the penny C. raise money for charities D. keep the penny in use 3. The penny coin is mainly made of _____. A. copper B. steel C. iron D. zinc

The time of year at which you are born has an enduring influence on levels of optimism and self-reported luck, according to a research by British and Swedish scientists. May was the luckiest month in which to be born, with 50 percent of those born then considering themselves lucky, while October was the least lucky month, with just 43 percent claiming good fortune. The findings add to growing evidence that the phenomenon of luck is not all down to chance, but is affected by a person’s general disposition. Other researc h has shown that whether people think themselves fortunate depends less on objective success than on having a “glass half-full” or “half-empty” approach to life. “What we are seeing suggests that something is influencing how people perceive their luckiness. My hypothesis is that people create their own luck by traits such as optimism, that luck is a psychological phenomenon rather than a matter of blind chance,” said Professor Richard Wiseman, who led the research. The pattern of the result, with those born in spring and in summer reporting themselves luckier than those born in autumn or winter, could have two potential explanations, Professor Wiseman said. 1.According to the passage, whether people think themselves lucky or not depends on the following factors EXCEPT _______. A. one’s objective success B. one’s general disposition C. one’s attitude to life D. one’s place of birth
