The American population was the tallest in the world from about the American Revolution to World WarⅡ-that's a long time. The U. S. had a very resource-rich environment, with game, fish and wildlife. In fact we have data on disadvantaged people in America, such as slaves. They were obviously among the most mistreated populations in the world, but given the resource abundance, and given the fact that the slave owners .needed ,their work, they had to be fed. relatively decently. So the slaves were taller than European peasants. It's no wonder that Europeans were just flooding to America.

Americans today are no longer the tallest people in the world. After World War ‖many Western and Northern European countries began to adopt favorable social policies. There is universal health insurance in most of these societies-that ,of course; makes a difference in health care. You can also consider income inequality in the U. S. ; since-people who are. at the low end of the totem pole(图腾柱) have considerable adversity making ends meet. I suspect The difference in height between Americans and Europeans is due to both diet and health care.

Americans today suffer from an additional problem: obesity. If children are too well nourished, then they're not able to grow optimally. There are certain hormones that control the start of' the adolescent growth and the start of adolescence. Nutrition is one of the factors, along with genetic and hormonal ones which are associated with the start of puberty(青春期) . And if puberty comes too early, then the youth will peak out sooner, and will not become as tall in adulthood as someone who had better nutrition. Also, the overload of carbohydrates and fats in a fast-food diet may hinder the consumption of micronutrients essential to growth.

Passage Two

Questions 26 t0 30 are based. on the following passage. .

The threat of a global outbreak(疾发) of bird flu makes it urgent for the international community to cooperate effectively. Wealthy countries will have to provide hundreds of millions of dollars for the testing and production of medicines necessary for treating patients suffering from bird flu. Developing countries, particularly in Southeast Asia, where the bird flu virus(病毒) has spread since 1997 , must work out special programs so that farmers will not hide signs of possible outbreaks. In addition, the way such farm birds as chickens and ducks are traditionally raised and marketed in the" developing world should be changed; there should be more distance between the birds and their keepers. Countries should deal with the disease with joint effort. If one country is inadequately prepared, -it will be a threat to every other country.

The potential effects of' a national outbreak of bird flu are enormous. Firstly, an outbreak may kill large numbers of people. World Health Organization ( WHO) estimates that an outbreak similar to The mild Hong Kong flu of 1968 could kill as many as 7.4 million people. If it were as dangerous as the 1918 Spanish flu, which killed 50 million, the number would be much higher. Secondly, such an;' outbreak may cause great financial damage: The latest. outbreak of bird flu, which began in December 2003, has cost Southeast Asia more than $10 billion and depressed its GDP by l. 5 percent. If a new outbreak of' bird flu were to last for a whole year, $800 billion would be lost.

Despite the 124 human cases and 63 deaths from. bird 7flu since December 2003, the virus remains mainly a disease of animals. However, the more animals that die of the disease, the more chances it has of spreading to people. Large numbers of dead or dying birds mean that more people will be exposed to the. virus, which could in theory combine with a human flu virus and change into a virus with new characteristics. If the international community works together efficiently, man can surely prevent such a virus and possibly save millions of lives.

26. Faced with the threat of a global outbreak of bird flu, the international community should ______

A. establish new markets

B. work together effectively

C. stop birds from flying to other countries

D. raise fewer chickens and ducks

27. The second paragraph focuses on ______ .

A. World Health Organization

B. flues in Hong Kong and Spain ;

C. the economy of Southeast Asia

D. possible effects of a bird flu outbreak

28. The number of people who have died of bird flu since 2003 is ________.

A.63

B. 124

C. 7.4 million

D. 50 million

29.In the third paragraph, the author is mainly interested in ___________ .

A. stimulating financial growth B reducing economic damages

C. saving human lives

D. protecting bird species

30. The passage deals with all the following aspects about bird flu EXCEPT --

A. the origin and history of bird flu

B. the importance of international cooperation

C. the possible dangers of a national outbreak

D. the significance(,f preventing it from spreading

Passage Three

Questions 31 t0 35 are based on the following passage.

Storytelling is one of the few human features that are truly universal across culture and through all of known history. Anthropologists find evidence of folktales everywhere in ancient cultures, written in Sanskrit, Latin, Greek, Chinese, Egyptian and Sumerian. People in societies of all types weave stories, from oral storytellers in hunter-gatherer tribes to the millions of writers bringing out books, television shows and movies. And when a characteristic behavior shows up in so many different societies, researchers pay attention: its roots may tell us something about our evolutionary past.

To study storytelling, scientists must first define what constitutes a story, and that can prove tricky. Because there are so many diverse forms, scholars often define story structure, known as narrative, by explaining what it is not. Exposition contrasts with narrative by being a simple, straight for-ward explanation, such as a list of facts or an encyclopedia entry. Another standard approach defines narrative as a series of causally linked events that unfold over time. A third definition draws on the typical narrative' s subject matter: the interactions of intentional

agents-characters with minds-who possess various motivations.

However narrative is defined, people know it when they feel it. Whether fiction or nonfiction, a narrative engages its audience through psychological realism-recognizable emotions and believable interactions among characters.

Everyone has a natural detector for psychological realism," says Raymond A. Mar, assistant professor of psychology at York University in Toronto. " We can tell when smelling rings false. " But the best stories-those retold through generations and translated into other languages-do more than simply present a believable picture. These tales attract heir audience-,whose emotions can be closely tied to those of the story' s characters. Such immersion(沉浸)is a state psychologists call" narrative transport". Researchers have only begun figuring out the relations among the variables that can initiate narrative transport.

31. The passage indicates that storytelling__________

A. is ecoming less and less popular in modern societies

B. attracts researchers' attention all through human history

C. is the best way to show the evolutionary past of human beings

D. s a common cultural phenomenon all through the known history

32. The phrase "a characteristic behavior" in Para. 1 refers to____________

A. elling tories

B. witing books

C. studying folktales

D. producing movies

33. Exposition is characterized by ___________

A. believable pictures .

B. diverse subject matters

C. a simple and direct explanation

D. a number of causally linked events

34. How many approaches are mentioned to define a narrative?

A. ONE

B. TWO

C. Three.

D. Four.

35. The best stories attract their audience because they ___________

A. present a believable picture

B. express the audience' s emotions

Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving (感恩节).On this day most retail stores open their doors very early一some as early as 4 am. In addition, they provide their customers with great discounts on products. With this in mind, it is clear to see why so many shoppers buy many of their Christmas gifts on Black Friday. Black Friday is not as ok! as many people think. In fact, it is believed that the first Black. Friday was held in the 1970s in the USA. It was a day when stores decided to mark the start of the holiday season In order to draw more customers, they offered great discounts. All products sold very well. This large success resulted in the name Black Friday, it was so named because the stores were "in the black". This financial term means the stoics made a lot of money. However, it was not until around 2002 that Black Friday really started to gain in popularity. Today in the USA, countless advertisers proudly announce their Black Friday sales. They hope to attract shoppers into their stores. Black Friday is a day when many shoppers in the USA go out and buy gifts, even though Christmas Eve is still a more popular day to shop. Think again. Leasing can end up being just as expensive as buying. Most people think about leasing because they believe it will cost them less money. They're right-it is cheaper, but only in the short term. For example, if you were to lease anew Subaru Forester, you might pay $300 per month for the car. If you were to buy the same car, you would pay about $400 per month. Over a three-year, you would save $3600-a big savings. But after your lease is over, you have to give the car back. Many people want to lease because they can drive a more expensive car than they might otherwise be able to afford. For example, if you spend $300 monthly on a car, you might be able to lease a new Ford Explorer. For the same price, you might have to buy a used Explorer, or buy a new but much less expensive model. A lease, therefore, allows you to drive the latest models of more expensive cars. However, whatever car you can afford to buy you get to keep it, and it will always have a resell or trade-in(以新旧换)value if you want to upgrade to a new car later. Furthermore, people who lease cars are often shocked by how much they must pay when the lease is over . Most leases limit you to a certain number of miles. If you go over that, you must pay for each mile. As a result, you may end up paying thousands of dollars in mileage(里程) fees. In addition, when you lease ,you have to pay for regular maintenance and repairs to the vehicle. Since you must return the car finally, you are paying to repair someone else's car.

In no way can cheating on exams be ______ in school. A. elevated B. navigated C. exaggerated D. tolerated Most violence-related toys jeopardize the role of play in helping children make better _________ of their own feelings and interpret the world. A. knowledge B. realization C. emotion D. sense 我们选D为答案。 They are still not fully able to distinguish right __________ wrong.
