Canada is the world's second largest country after Russia. Canada is thinly populated, however, with much of the land too cold or too mountainous for human settlement most Canadians live within 300km (186 miles) of the southern border.Surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean to the east and Pacific Ocean to the west., Canada?s boundaries span (跨越) the widest portion (一部分) of the North America continent, from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean, from the United States along the 49th Parallel in the south to the North Pole, Arctic Ocean and Beaufort Sea in the north. The entire expanse of Canada covers 9,976,140 km2(Land: 9,220,970 km2and Water: 755,170 km2) about 1.3 times the size of Australia and over 40 times the size of the United Kingdom.

Varied Climate

Canada…s c limate is not as cold all year around as some may believe. In winter, temperatures fall below freezing point throughout most of Canada, especially in Nunavut where it is extremely cold. But the south-western coast has a relatively mild climate. Along the Arctic Circle, mean temperatures are below freezing for seven months a year. During the summer months the southern provinces often experience high levels of humidity (潮湿) and temperatures that can surpass 30 degrees Celsius regularly. Western and south-eastern Canada experience high rainfall, but the Prairies (大草原) are dry with 250 mm to 500 mm of rain every year.

Multi-national population

Canada has a widely spread population of 31,413,990 (July 2002). Almost 35% of Canadians are of British descent, 20% French and Italian, Chinese, Ukrainian, Dutch, Greek, Polish and Scandinavian make up a large portion of the population.

The aboriginal people who account for 470,000 Native Indians and 32,000 Inuit (the Eskimos of Canada) are much less than when the Europeans first inhabited Canada. There are also about 450,000 Metis, the name used to denote (指代) those of mixed aboriginal and European blood. All together this group of inhabitants accounts for around 4% of the population.

Multicolorful Religion

Canada is a multicultural country, and so it…s no surprise that there are a wide variety of religion s practiced in Canada as well. Although Canada began as a Christian country and Christianity continues to dominate, i t?s not easy to f igure out how many spiritual beliefs that cover all corners of the country.

Cities

There are ten provinces in all and three territories in Canada. Newfoundland and Labrador are the furthest east and were the latest to join Canada; formerly they were a British colony. The Maritimes consist of Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. Quebec is the French speaking province and shares most of the heavy industry in Canada with Ontario. The Canadian capital is Ottawa, located on the Ontario-Quebec border. Westwards are the prairie provinces and then British Columbia on the Pacific coast. North of British Columbia is the Yukon Territory which extends north to the Arctic Ocean with the Northwest Territories. The newest territory is Nunavut which extends throughout the Eastern Arctic with Greenland its nearest neighbor to the east. It used to be a part of the Northwest Territories and is totally isolated from the rest of the country except by aircraft and for the most part supplied by ship during a very short summer season. Most people there have a gift for riding dog sled.

T: So far we have learned a lot about Canada. Suppose you are a Canadian teacher and you are going to teach in Wenling High school. You are going to introduce your country to Wenling High School students in your first class. (Your introduction should include the following topics: location, size, capital, national flower, national animal, population, language, climate and natural resources.) Sample: Canada, which lies in the north of North America, is a multicultural country with Ottawa as its capital. The maple is the national flower and the beaver is the national animal. Canada is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean on the east, the Pacific Ocean on the west and the Arctic Ocean on the north. It is the second largest country in the world, covering an area of 9.98 million square kilometers. The distance from east to west is over 5,500 kilometres. There are two official languages spoken in Canada, French and English. As in China, the climate is quite different from area to area. Canada is quite empty with a population of only slightly over 30 million, most of whom live within 320 kilometres of the USA border. Canada is rich in natural resources. Much of the country is covered by forests and wood is sold all over the world. It has one third of the world?s supply of fresh water, much of which is in the five Great Lakes. Fishing is also important for Canadians.

T: Do you know any cities in Canada? Talk about the cities that you know.

S: Besides the capital city Ottawa, Canada has many other important cities. For example, Vancouver is known as the warmest city and of great beauty. Toronto is the biggest and most wealthy city in Canada and Montreal is a city with a French culture.

T: Have you ever heard of the city, Iqaluit, the capital of Nunavut? It is the smallest Canadian capital city. Look at the map. Where does the city lie?

S: It lies in the northeast of Canada, north of the Arctic Circle.

T: Who do you think live in Nunavut?

S: The Inuit.

T:Yes. Nunavut is a special area for Inuit people, who are the original people in the far north of Canada. Why is there a special area created for the Inuit?

S: To keep the Inuit culture alive.

T: Today we are going to read a passage about Iqaluit. What can you learn from the title “ Iqaluit—The frozen town”.

Iqaluit is located 2,000 kilometres from Ottawa and is generally only accessible(可进入的) via aircraft, dog sled, snowmobile and some boats. Recorded history of Iqaluit dates back to 1576, when Martin Frobisher arrived at this port city. Iqaluit has a typically arctic climate, with very cold winters and short summers. It experiences 24 hours of daylight per day in June, and six hours per day in December. The average temperature in January is -35degrees and in July is 15degrees. Iqaluit has a population of about 6000, of which about 60% are Inuit. The Inuit are the original people of Canada, who used to live by hunting and fishing and live in movable houses and tents.

重庆高中英语必修五 Unit3《Life in the future》全套教案

Unit 3 life in the future说课稿 尊敬的评委: 早上好。今天我说课的主题是必修五第三单元life in the future,第一篇课文First impressions。
