Editor: Today our topic is part-time jobs. Are they good for school children or not?

Headmaster: Certainly not. Children have got two full-time jobs already: growing up

and going to school. Part-time jobs make

them so tired that they fall asleep in

class.

Mrs. Barrens: I agree with you. I know school hours are short, and there’s homework

too, so children need a lot of sleep.

Mr. Barrens: Some students stay at school until they’re eighteen of nineteen. A part-time

And they see something of the world

outside school.

Businessman: You’re quite right. Boys learn a lot from part-time jobs. And we mustn’t

forget that some families need the extra

Maybe your maths teacher has already taught you how to find the centre of a circle(圆).It isn’t easy to learn and it takes some time to do so. Here’s a simple idea. This idea can be easily learned in a few minutes.

Put a corner of a square piece of paper on the

It had been some time since Jack had seen the old man. In fact, in the rush of his busy life, Jack had little time to think about the past and often no time to spend with his wife and son. He was working on his future, and nothing could stop

him.

Over the phone, his mother told him, “Mr. Belser died last night. The funeral(葬礼) is Wednesday.” Mem ories flashed through his mind as he sat quietly remembering his childhood(童年) days.

“Jack, did you hear me?”

“Oh, sorry, Mom. Yes, I heard you. It’s been so long since I thought of him. I’m sorry, but I honestly thought he died years ago,” Jack said.

“Well, he didn’t forget you. Every time I saw him he’d ask how you were doing. He’d think of the many days you spent with him. ” Mom told him.

“ He spent a lot of time teaching me things he thought were important…Mom, I’ll be there for the funeral,” Jack said.

Busy as he was, he kept his word. Mr. Belser’s funeral was small. He had no children of his own, and most of his relatives had passed away.

The night before he had to return home, Jack and his Mom stopped to see the old house next door one more time. Every step held memories. Every picture, every corner… Jack stopped suddenly.

“What’s wrong, Jack?” his Mom asked.

“The box is gone,” he said.

“What box?” Mom asked.

“There was a small gold box that he kept locked on top of his desk. I must have asked him a thousand times what was inside. All he’d ever tell me was ‘the thing I value most’,” Jack said.

“Now I’ll never know what was so valuable to him,” Jack said sadly.

Returning to his office the next day, he found a package on his desk. The return address caught his attention.

“Mr. Harold Belser” it read.

There inside the small gold box he found a beautiful gold pocket watch, he opened it. Inside he found these words “Jack, Thanks for your time! Harold Belser.”

The evidence for harmony may not be obvious in some families. But it seems that four out of five young people now get on with their parents, which is the opposite of the popular image of unhappy teenagers locked in their room after endless family quarrels.

An important new study into teenage attitudes (态度) surprisingly shows that their family life is happier than it has ever been in the past. “We were surprised by just how positive (积极的) today’s young people seem to be about their families,” said one member of the research team. “They’re thought to be rebellious

(叛逆的)and selfish but actually they have other things on their minds; they want a car and material goods, and they worry about whether school is serving them well. There’s discussion between parents and children, and children hope to take part in the family decision-making process. They don’t want to rock the boat.”

So it seems that these parents are much more likely than parents of 30 years ago to treat their children as friends. “My parents are happy to discuss things with me and willing to listen to me,” says 17-year-old Daniel Lazall. “I always tell them when I’m going out clubbing. When they know what I’m doing, they’re fine with it.” Susan Crome, who is now 21, agrees. “Looking back on the last 10 years, there was a lot of what you could call talk or discussion. For example, when I’d done all my homework, I could go out on a Saturday night. But I think my grandparents were a lot stricter with my parents than that.”

It is possible that the idea of teenage rebellion (叛逆) is not based on real facts. A researcher explain s, “Teenagers were thought to be different from others in a part of time in our social history. But to our surprise, they say they are getting on well with their parents. But that idea of rebelling(叛逆)and breaking away from their parents really only happened during that one time in the 1960s when everyone rebelled(叛逆).”

34. What is the popular image of teenagers today?

A. They worry about school.

B. They dislike living with their parents.

C. They have to be locked in to make fewer troubles.

D. They quarrel a lot with other family members.

35. “They don’t want to rock the boat.”shows that teenagers don’t w ant to _________.

A. share family duties

C. go boating with their family

D. make family decisions

36. According to the writer, teenage rebellion _________.

A. may be a wrong opinion

B. is common at present

C. lived only in the 1960s

D.

was caused by changes in families

37. What is the passage mainly about?
