Why would one person have two different ancestries? One, in Marks gospel, is straightforward, the royal succession, king after king regardless of blood. Recently I was in Georgia, what I call proper Georgia, in the Caucasus, to speak in their European week, and one day I managed to get out into the country for a lovely walk with a friend. We need it in our care homes, and we need it to be expressed in the political policies of the State towards the

elderly.

You dont need to be religious to have this attitude. But I do think that a Christian understanding of what it is to be a human person made in the image of God, with a spiritual orientation and destination, does give a dimension that suffuses, and reinforces our best human values and attitudes. An interesting phrase, given Mr Johns introduction to this once devastating scourge.

Elton Johns book is provocatively entitled, Love is the Cure. Not medicine, or science, or technology, it is love for which this God is known above all, extending an invitation into His kingdom to a terrorist hanging by His side. As Elton John said, Jesus, like Ryan who followed Him, loved and forgave unconditionally and died for the sake of others. A death even more disagreeable than my friends all those years ago.
