Most fitness advice is aimed at a general audience. But if you’re an older adult, the International Council on Active Aging (ICAA) has some tips for seniors to get started and keep them at the top of their game.

72 Talk with your doctor about getting permission to begin a fitness program and making any changes to suit your situation.

73 Before starting, pick a program you’ll enjoy, so you’ll do it regularly. Check out the facility and the staff. Is the place friendly? Can you change clothes comfortably? Are facilities easily accessed?

Determine your participation style. Choose what’s best for you——a class or going solo? Morning or night hours? 74

Start slowly. Most people are overeager and sometimes overdo it. Record a baseline of your regular activities and determine a reasonable plan.

Make a date. Find a friend to exercise with you and keep you motivated.

Set specific short-term and long-term goals. Plan for activity in your day and make it a priority. Remind yourself what your goals are. If it hurts, don’t do it. 75 And once you’ve reached your goal, treat yourself for the good job you’ve done, so it will encourage you t o continue.

Competitors who wear red win more than those that are dressed in any other color, according to study in Germany.

71 Experts believe that red could make individuals and teams feel more confident as well as being perceived by others as more aggressive.

72 On the other hand, the results could suggest that the success of those teams has given those that wear the red color more confident.

The study, by German sports psychologists at the University of Munster, was reported in New Scientist magazine. They showed video recording of taekwondo matches to 42 experienced referees. One fighter wore blue and the other wore red. They then showed them the same recordings but digitally manipulated the clothing to exchange the colors. 73 “If one competitor is strong and the other is weak, it won’t change the outcome of the fight,” said Norbert Hagemann, who led the study. “ 74 ”

In 2004 scientists at Durham University also looked at how color influenced sporting competitiveness. They analyzed Olympic contest sports such as boxing, taekwondo, and freestyle wrestling and found that nearly 55% of which were won by the competitor in red.

The Mayas believed that chocolate had mystical properties. 73 In fact, cocoa beans were used as a form of currency that was worth its weight in gold.

Spanish conquistador Hernando Cortez was the first European e xplorer to realize coco’s commercial possibilities. 74 in 1529, Cortez returned Spain and introduced chocolate——as a drink mixed with sugar, vanilla, and cinnamon——to European society.

Exercise 5:

For the rest of March, a disease will sweep across the US. It will keep kids home from school.

71 Employees will suddenly lose their ability to concentrate.

The disease, known as “March Madness”, refers to the yearly 65-team US men’s college basketball tournament(锦标赛). 72 Teams compete against each other in a single-elimination(单局淘汰) tournament that eventually crowns a national champion.

Nearly 20 million Americans will find themselves prisoners of basketball festival madness. The fun comes partly from guessing the winners for every game. Friends compete against friends.

73 Colleagues against bosses.

Big-name schools are usually favored to advance into the tournament. But each year there are dark horses from little-known universities.

This adds to the madness. Watching a team from a school with 3,000 students beat a team from a school with 30,000, for many Americans, is an exciting experience. Two years ago, the little-known George Mason University was one of the final teams. 74

College basketball players are not paid, so the game is more about making a name for their university and themselves. 75 About $4 billion will be spent gambling on the event. According to Media Life magazine, the event will bring in $500 million in advertising income this year, topping the post-season income of every US professional league, including that of the NBA.

Exercise 6:

Culture means any human behavior that is learned in human society. All of the meaningful parts of a culture are passed on to different generations through tradition or social learning. 71 Culture exists in agricultural as well as industrialized societies.

Culture is necessary for the survival and existence of human beings as human beings. Practically everything humans know, think, value, feel, and do is learned through taking part in a sociocultural system. 72 Here is one of the cases of children growing up apart from human society. In the province of Midnapore in India, the director of a children’s home was told by local villagers that there were “ghost” in the fo rest. Upon looking into the case, the director found that two children, one about eight years old and the other about six years old, appeared to have been living a pack of wolves in the forest. 73 In his diary, the director describes his first view of Kamala (as the older child was named) and Amala ( the name given to the younger child): Kamala was a terrible-looking being, the head, a big ball of something covering the shoulders.

74 Their eyes were bright and sharp, unlike human eyes. They were very fond of raw meat and raw milk. Gradually, as they got stronger, they began going on all fours, and afterwards began to run on all fours, just like squirrels.

Children learn human language in the same way they learn other kinds of human behavior——by taking part in a cultural community. 75

A. From this viewpoint, all human groups have a culture.

B. Close at its heels there came another terrible creature exactly like the first, but smaller in size.

2017年高考英语阅读专练(七选五) 1. Brain Transplants Research on the human brain has been attracting more and more scientists in recent years. 1 If we compare a human brain to a hard disc, what the scientists are doing is to make better use of the hard disc. The idea that a human brain could be transplanted may come from Frankenstein. In 1999, an experiment turned a bear into a dolphin. 2 They were made of the memory area in the dolphin’s brain containing information about swimming. They had a series of useful information, which was saved into a button-sized chip (芯片). Later the information was transplanted into the action memory area in the bear’s brain. 3 It proved to be a highly successful experiment and a bear was turned into a dolphin. Recently, another memory transplant was performed at the Motor Nerve Research Institute of the University of California. The experiment had an entire transplant of the memory area. 4 The transplant was performed from a dog named Genius to a dog named Idiot. Genius could follow up to 100 gestures and orders made by its master. It was a real genius in memorizing. However, Idiot had no contact with people since its birth. It became an animal with nothing in its brain, without any memory. 5 When the two dogs woke up, Idiot had grasped all the abilities Genius possessed; it was good at memorizing and sensible. It could follow every gesture and any command given by its master. But Genius gave no response to its master, and did not recognize him at all. A. The experiment was a complete success. B. It included actions, moods, logic, words, images, etc. C. Then it was released by means of electric power. D. Different images have different meanings in the memory area. E. Using the most advanced technology, detailed images were produced. F. Discoveries show that messages are carried by the central nervous system in the brain. G. One of the latest topics is how to change the human brain or combine it with the computer. 2. W. Lloyd Jerome’s Dental Surgery If you walk into W.Lloyd Jerome’s dental surgery in Glasgow,
