In the sea there are many islands. In its warm waters there are some little ones. We call them

A coral island is very nice to look at. It looks like a ring of land with trees, grass and flowers on it. One part

of the ring is open to the water. There is a little round lake inside the island.

If you look into this lake, you will see beautiful coral. You may think they are flowers. If you look at a piece

Buzz Aldrin, the second man to walk on the Moon, is a long-time fan of space tourism. He climbed out of

Apollo Ⅱhot on the heels of Neil Armstrong in 1969. Now, at the age of 72, he is working on a new project that

could put more fellows in space, namely, on journeys to one of our most fascinating neighbors, Mars(火星).

Together with scientists from Purdue University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the

University of Texas, Aldrin is designing spacecrafts that would continuously travel between Earth and Mars.

These spacecrafts, known as “circlers”, would ca

on Mars, which has long been dreamed about in science fiction. While now most people are convinced that they

are going to do this:the only question is when.

The average distance between Mars and Earth is 48 million miles. To get a sense of just how far this is, try

doing this calculation: Given that there are 2,500 miles between New York and Los Angeles, how many times

would you have to travel from NY to LA and back to cover the same distance? It sounds like a trip that would

require a lot of fuel. According to the engineers, the circlers may have a natural, renewable “When the circler flies by Earth, it will be traveling at a speed of about 13,000 miles per hour. Space taxis will

be needed to bring people from the surface of the earth to intercept(拦截)the circler. “This sort of taxi is like a

bus that doesn’t stop,”says Longuski, a professor from Purdue University. “When it comes by, you have to ru alongside of it and grab on.”

Aldrin and his group think that the first circler could be on its way by 2018. So, if you’re in high school now,

you could be taking a trip to Mars by the time you’re in your thirties. It seems a long way off now, but it

than you think!

Fasten your seatbelts and your flight to space may set out soon.

When the musical sound rings out, you immediately reach for your pocket ready to have a chat. But although

you probably use it all the time, have you ever stopped to think about the manners related to talking on the phone?

t, here are some tips to guide you.

If you haven’

●Always give the person you are calling plenty of time to get to the phone before you hang up. If the person

who answers is not the one you want, give your name and ask if you may speak to the person you want.

●Think about the time you call people. Try not to call too early in the morning (before about 9∶00) or too

late at night (after about 9∶30). Also try not to call at mealtimes.

●If you go by plane to visit your relatives at Christmas, remember to follow airline instructions. Cell phones

must be turned off as soon as the plane doors are closed and remain so until the doors open again on arrival.

●When face to face with someone, do not talk on the phone. It is rude to be on the phone when a waiter is

trying to take your order in a restaurant, or when you are returning the shoes you have just been trying on in a

shop. Finish any face-to-face business before taking a call. Continuing to use the phone while nodding to the

person in front of you is quite impolite.

●When in a restaurant with your friends, keep phone conversations short. Make a call only if it is important.

Practise speaking in a low voice. If no one looks your way, you’ve got it.

●If you go to a theatre, a concert or a cinema, consider the other people around you. Check that your phone

is “off”before you enter. If you are expecting a very important call, put your phone on “vibrate”(振动) and run

for the exit as soon as you feel it. If you forget both “off” and “vibrate” and your phone rings, don’t it off straight away.

44. Which is TRUE according to the passage above?

A. You may call people anytime as you like.

B. You may talk loudly on the phone at dinner in the restaurant.

C. You may keep on talking on the phone while greeting somebody.

D. You may call people as soon as you get on the plane, but not after the doors are closed.

45. We may infer from these tips that _______.

A. some people don’t pay much attention to manners while making cell phone calls

B. you may ask to leave a message unless the person you are calling is in

C. calling people too early or too late in the morning is not polite

D. almost everyone has got a cell phone

46. What does the underlined sentence mean in the passage?

A. You have succeeded in making a call without disturbing others.

B. You have made the phone call brief and interesting.

C. You’ve got the message you are waiting for.

D. You have made a phone call secretly.

47. From the tips given above, we can decide the writer is sure to share the opinion that _______.

wadays cell phones make a man

A. 1ike the saying “clothes make a man”, no

B. as the old saying goes, money talks; nowadays cell phones talk

C. the way we use the cell phones tells what we are like

D. we are what cell phones we use

London—A morning train rides away, across the channel. English kids discuss the Liverpool’s football team in a Paris pub.

Some Parisians have started to travel to work in London.

In the 19th century, Charles Dickens compared the two cities, London and Paris, in A Tale of Two Cities.

These days, it might be A tale of One City.

As there are few jobs at home over recent years, perhaps 250,000 Frenchmen moved across the channel.

With an undersea tunnel, they could travel between cities in three hours. The European Union freed them from

immigration and customs.

Paris, rich in beauty, is more stylish. But London feels more full of life, and more fun until the pubs shut

down.

“For me, the difference is that London is real, alive,” said Trevor Wheeler, a financial expert.

Chantal Jaouen, a professional designer, agree s. “I am French, but I’ll stay in London,” she said.

There is, of course, the other view. Julie Lenoux is a student who moved to London two years ago.

people laugh more in Paris,” she said.

y Collins, an author and sometimes a Londoner.

“Both cities have changed beyond recognition,” said Larr

Like most people who know both cities well, he finds the two now fit together comfortably.

“I first fell in love with Paris in the 1950s. Things are so much more ordered, and life is better.”

But certainly not cheaper.

In some parts of London, rents can be twice those on Avenue Foch in Paris.

Deciding between London and Paris requires a lifestyle choice.

Like Daphne Benoit, a French journalism student with perfect English, many young people are happy to be

close enough so they don’t have to choose.

“I love Paris, my little neighbourhood, the way I can walk around a centre, but life is too organized,”said. “In London, you can be whoever you want. No one cares.”

48. It can be inferred that _______.

A. Paris and London are the two biggest cities in the world

B. in the 19th century, Dickens told his stories in the two cities

C. London and Paris used to be separated

D. Liverpool is a big city in France

49. According to this passage, which of the following is TRUE?

A. People feel it difficult to find a job in Paris.

B. People can’t travel to London without a passport.

C. People can travel to London without a passport.

D. People can find any job in London.

50. Which city is better to live in according to the passage?

A. Paris.

B. London.

C. Both cities.

D. It just depends.

51. What’s the meaning of the last sentence?

A. People can do everything in London.

B. People will feel lonely in London.

C. People in London enjoy living in different ways.

D. People in London enjoy a lawless life.

An American researcher has developed a simple device(装置) to help people stop snoring. The device limits

the movements of the tissues(组织) that cause the unpopular sound. Snoring is a common problem. It may prevent

a person from getting enough sleep. It may also prevent enough oxygen from reaching heart and lungs during

sleep. But for most people, snoring affects relations with another person who must sleep in the back room.

Snoring happens when the sleeping person breathes with the mouth open. In the back of the mouth the

tissues surrounding the entrance of the throat are soft. As the person breathes, the movement of the air around the

soft tissues causes them to move or vibrate. This tissue movement causes the sound we call snoring. A number of

possible solutions have been proposed. Some devices keep the mouth shut. They force the patient to breathe only through the nose. A medical operation is also possible. Other devices catch the sound of snoring and then wake the patient. The new antisnoring device was developed by a dentist, George Wagner of the Indian University School

of Dentistry. He developed a piece of plastic that fits up against the inside of the mouth. The device keeps the soft tissues from vibrating and making the snoring noise. It is worn only at night. Doctor Wagner said that the simple device has ended several patients’ snoring problem in a simple way.

52. The underlined word “snoring” ( in Paragraph 1) probably means ______.

A. speaking while one sleeps

B. dreaming while one sleeps

C. noises made while one sleeps

D. sighs given while one sleeps

53. Snoring happens when a person is _______.

A. dreaming at night, even during the day

B. breathing with one’s mouth closed

D. poor in health

C. sleeping with one’s mouth open

54. From the passage we know that the simplest and most efficient way to prevent a person from snoring is

to _______.

A. keep the soft tissues from vibrating

B. give patient a medical operation

C. wake him / her up as soon as he / she snores

D. make him / her listen to the sound of snoring

55. How many possible solutions to snoring have been proposed in the passage?

A. Two.

B. Three.

C. Four.

D. Five.

To forgive may be great, but no one ever said it was easy. Forgiveness can be surprisingly beneficial to your physical and mental health. People who forgive show less depression, anger and stress and more hopefulness. Try following these steps:

★Calm yourself. To calm your anger, try a simple stress-management technique. Take a couple of breaths and think of something that gives you pleasure: a beautiful scene in nature, or someone you love.

★Don’t wait for an apology. Many times the person who hurt you has no intention of apologizing. They may

just don’t see things the same way. So if

, you could be waiting an awfully long time. Keep in mind that forgiveness does not necessarily mean reconciliation (和解) with the person who upset you.

★Try to see things from the other person’s perspective(视角). If you empathize(产生共鸣) with that person, you may realize that he or she was acting out of ignorance, fear —even love. To gain perspective, you may write a letter to yourself from that person’s point of view.

★Recognize the benefits of forgiveness. Research has shown that people who forgive report more energy, better appetite and better sleep patterns.

★Don’t forget to forgive yourself. For some people, forgiving themselves is the biggest challenge. But it can

rob you of your self-confidence if you don’t do it.

人教版高中英语必修四(高一版)

高中英语黄金阅读(高一版) 习俗类 (1) In the US, people prefer waiting for a table to sitting with people they don’t know. This means a hostess may not seat a small group until a small table is available, even if a large one is. If you are sitting at a table with people you don’t know, it is impolite to light up a cigarette without asking if it will disturb them. At American restaurants and coffee shops you are usually served tap water before you order. You may find the bread and butter is free, and if you order coffee, you may get a free refill. Most cities and towns have no rules about opening and closing time for stores or restaurants, though they usually do make rules for bars. Especially in large cities, stores may be open 24 hours a day. Serving in restaurants is often large; too large for many people. If you can’t finish your meal but would like to enjoy the food later, ask your waitress or waiter for a “doggie bag”. It may have a picture of a dog on it, but everybody knows you’re taking the food for yourself. Supper and dinner are both words for the evening meal. Some people have “Sunday dinner”. This is an especially big noon meal. Tips are not usually added to the check. They are not included in the price of the meal, either. A tip of about 15% is expected and you should leave it on the table when you leave. In some restaurants, a check is brought on a plate and you put your money there. Then the waiter or waitress brings you your change. 1. Which statement is true? A. American people like sitting with people they don’t know. B. A hostess always seats a small group at a large table. C. American people never sit with people they don’t know. D. American people would not light a cigarette if the people who sit at the same table mind their smoking. 2. What is served before you order? A. bread B. butter C. coffee D. cold water 3. What do American people always do when servings are too large for them? A. They take the food home with a doggie bag for their dogs. B. They leave the food on the table and go away. C. They take the food home with a doggie bag and enjoy the food later. D. They ask the waitress or waiter to keep the food for them. 4. Sunday dinner is_______. A. a dinner in the evening B. A big noon meal C. a big lunch on Sunday D.

4 Unit 1 A STUDENT OF AFRICAN WILDLIFE It is 5:45 am and the sun is just rising over Gombe National Park in East Afri ca. Following Jane's way of studying chimps, our group are all going to visit them in the forest. Jane has studied these families of chimps for many years and helped people understand how much they behave like humans. Watching a family of chi mps wake up is our first activity of the day. This means going back to the place where we left the family sleeping in a tree the night before. Everybody sits and wa its in the shade of the trees while the family begins to wake up and move off. Th en we follow as they wander into the forest. Most of the time, chimps either feed or clean each other as a way of showing love in their family. Jane warns us that our group is going to be very tired and dirty by the afternoon and she is right. Ho wever, the evening makes it all worthwhile. We watch the mother chimp and her b abies play in the tree. Then we see them go to sleep together in their nest for the night. We realize that the bond between members of a chimp family is as strong as in a human family. Nobody before Jane fully understood chimp behaviour. She spent years observi ng and recording their daily activities. Since her childhood she had wanted to work with animals in their own environment. However, this was not easy. When she firs t arrived in Gombe in 1960, it was unusual for a woman to live in the forest. Only after her mother came to help her for the first few months was she allowed to be gin her project. Her work changed the way people think about chimps. For exampl e, one important thing she discovered was that chimps hunt and eat meat. Until th en everyone had thought chimps ate only fruit and nuts. She actually observed chi mps as a group hunting a monkey and then eating it. She also discovered how ch
