It is a pleasure to stand upon the shore and to see ships tossed upon the sea; a pleasure to stand in the window of a castle and to see a battle and the adventures thereof blow; but no pleasure is comparable to the standing upon the vantage-ground of truth(a hill not to be comman-ded, and where the air is always dear and serene) and to see the errors and wanderings andmists and tempests in the vale below.

There in the mist, enormous, majestic, silent, and terrible, stood the Great Wall of China, Solitarily, with the indifference of nature herself, it crept up the mountain side and slipped down to the depth of the velley, Menacingly, the grim watch towers, stark and foursquare, at due intervals stood at their posts. Ruthlessly, for it was built at the cost of a million lives and each one of those great great stones has been stained with the bloody tears of the captive and the outcast, it forged its dark way through a sea of rugged mountains. Fearlessly, it went on its endless journey, league upon league to the furthermost regions of Asia, in utter solitude, mysterious like the great empire it guarded. There in the mist, enormous, majustic, silent, and terrible, stood the Great Wall of China.

The water of the Qinhuai River looked dark green but not greasy. Could t be that it was mingled with the gold and rouge of the Six Dynasties? When we went aboard it was just dark, and the ripples looked so quiet and mild that we felt the vast space between heaven and earth and imagined the luxurious and dissipated life of those days. When the lanterns were lit, the sky looked darker, and the dim water seemed to be a dream, the occasionally glittering ripples and eyes of the dream. We sat on the foredeck; because of the visionary effect of the highly upwards and we were riding the wind and scaring up to the skies. The boats lying leisurely at anchor here and there and the figures shifting about looked as if they were far away in a world below, and the blurred view also seemed like watching flowers through fog. Then we passed the Lishe Bridge, and the Eastern Gate came in sight. Now and then all along the way we heard songs, some wafted to our ears from the brothels along the banks and the others from boats on the river. We knew for sure that lyrics were hackneyed words mechanically produced by dry throats, but when they were wafted to our ears by the mid-summer breeze over the ripples, they were no longer merely sung by the girls, for the singing blended with the whispers of the breeze and water. We were perforce provoked, shaken and quite carried away by the songs. Soon after making a turn at the Eastern Gate we arrived at the Dazhong Bridge. The three wide arches of the bridge looked like three big gates, and we felt that we were very paltry when our boat was passing through. The bricks of the bridge were dark brown, a sign of their long history; the bridge was intact, which arouse our admiration for the wonders of ancient architecture.

It was dreadfully cold, it was snowing fast, and almost dark; the evening----the last evening of the old year was drawing in. But, cold and dark as it was, a poor little girl, with bare head and feet, was still wandering about the streets. When she left her home she had slippers on, but they were much too large for her; indeed, properly, they belonged to her mother, and had dropped off her feet whilst1 she was running very fast across the road, to get out of the way of two carriages. One of the slippers was not to be found, the other had been snatched up by a little boy, who ran off with it thinking it might serve him as a doll's cradle.

So the little girl now walked on, her bare feet quite red and blue with the cold. She carried a small bundle of matches in her hand, and a good many more in her tattered apron. No one had bought any of them the live long day; no one had given her a single penny. Trembling with cold and hunger crept she on, the picture of sorrow: poor little child!

The snow-flakes fell on her long, fair hair, which curled in such pretty ringlets over her shoulders; but she thought not of her own beauty, or of the cold. Lights were glimmering through every window, and the savoir of roast goose reached her from several houses; it was New Year's eve, and it was of this that she thought.

On and on the Great River rolls, racing east.

Of proud and gallant heroes its white-tops leave no trace,

As right and wrong, pride and fall turn all at once unreal.

Yet ever the green hills stay

To blaze in the west-waning day.

Fishers and woodsmen comb the river isles.

White-crowned, they've seen enough of spring and autumn tide

To make good company over the wine jar,

Where many a famed event

Provides their merriment.

Sweet September

散文翻译Sweet September Sweet September By Hal Borlnd 甜美的九月 September is more than a month, really; it is a season, an achievement in itself. It begins with August's leftovers and it ends with October's preparations, but along t he way it achieves special satisfactions. After summer's heat and haste, the year co nsolidates itself. Deliberate September-in its own time and tempo---begins to sum u p another summer. With September comes a sense of autumn. It creeps in on a misty dawn and vanis hes in the hot afternoon. It tiptoes through the treetops, rouging a few leaves, the n rides a tuft of thistledown across the valley and away. It sits on a hilltop and ho ots like an October owl in the dusk. It plays tag with the wind. September is a cha llenging busy as a squirrel in a hickory tree, idle as a languid brook. It is summer's ripeness and richness fulfilled. Some of the rarest days of the year come in the September season-days when it is comfortably cold but pulsing with life, when the sky is clear and clean, the air cris p, the wind free of dust. Meadows still smell of hay and the sweetness of cut gras s. September flowers are less varied than those of May but so abundant that they make September another flowery month. Goldenrod comes by mid-August, but rises to a peak of golden abundance in early September. Late thistles make spectacular purple accents. And asters blossom everywhere, along the roadsides, in meadows, o n the hilltops, even in city lots, raging in color from pure white through all degrees of lavender to the royal New England purple.

Grandpa and Nightly Blackout Bing Xin In the autumn of 1911, we returned from Yantai of Shandong Province to our native place Fuzhou. While on the way, my parents warned me again and again, “Since we’ll be living in a big family in Fuzhou, remember always to behave properly and never act like a naughty child. Show respect for your elders, particularly your grandpa, who is head of the family…” After settling down in the big family in Fuzhou, however, I found that my previous worries on the way turned out to be unfounded. My grandpa, uncles, aunties and cousins never thought me a naughty child. We treated each other lovingly and equally. There never existed anything like “family rules of good behaviour”. I also found that the big family was a loose community of several smaller ones, which lived and ate separately. They each had their own relatives and friends, for example, their own

The sun shone brightly on the ground in front of her feet as she pondered the reality of light. How did light get here? Who made it and why? She instinctively stepped into the sun spot and instantly felt warmer, brighter, and fuller of life and energy. The sun wrapped her in comfort and stability for, if nothing else, she could always count on the sun waking her up most mornings.

Its predictable radiance felt like the mother she never had as her childhood was characterized more so by pain and heartache than comfort and love. She stepped out of the sunlight and felt that all-too-familiar anxious pang in the pit of her stomach as she remembered how horrible it was to live in her childhood home. Memories flooded her mind as she unsuccessfully tried to block them out by thinking good thoughts. Oh how she wished she could curl up in the middle of the sun and allow its love to encase her for all eternity. But, no, she was stuck here on earth with those who didn't feel the sun's rays the same way she did,who didn't feel deeply connected to this amazing source of life. All she could do was stand in the sun on occasion and shut out the rest of the world for a little while. Maybe if she stood here long enough they would cease to exist.

Part I Reading comprehension Directions: There are some reading passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. you should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center. Education is one of the key words of our time. A man without an education, many of us believe, is an unfortunate victim(受害人) of unfortunate circumstances(状况)deprived of one of the greatest twenty-first century opportunities. Convinced(深信的)of the importance of education, modern states "invest" in institutions of learning to get back "interest" in the form of a large group of enlightened young men and women who are potential leaders. Education, with its cycles of instruction so carefully worked out, punctuated by textbooks ---those purchasable wells of wisdom ---what would civilization be like without its benefits? So much is certain: that we would have doctors and preachers, lawyers and defendants, marriages and births; but our spiritual outlook would be different. We would lay less stress on "facts and figures" and more on a good memory, on applied psychology, and on the capacity of a man to get along with his fellow citizens. If our educational system were fashioned after its bookless past we would have the most democratic form of "college" imaginable. Among the people whom we like to call savages all knowledge inherited by tradition is shared by all; it is taught to every member of the tribe so that in this respect everybody is equally equipped for life. It is the ideal condition of the "equal start" which only our most progressive forms of modem education try to regain. In primitive cultures the obligation to seek and to receive the traditional instruction is binding to all. There are no "illiterates" -if the term can be applied to peoples without a script---while our own compulsory school attendance became law in Germany in 1642, in France in 1806, and in England in 1967, and is still non- existent in a number of "civilized" nations. This shows how long it was before we deemed it necessary to make sure that all our children could share in the knowledge accumulated by the "happy few" during the past centuries. Education in the wilderness is not a matter of monetary means. All are entitled to an equal start. There is none of the hurry which, in our society, often hampers the full development of a growing personality. There, a child grows up under the ever-present attention of his parents; therefore the jungles and the savages know of no "juvenile

Person of the Year(Nancy Gibbs) Sept.11 delivered both a shock and a surprise---the attack, and our response to it----and we can argue forever over which mattered more. There has been so much talk of the goodness that erupted that day that we forget how unprepared we were for it. We did not expect much from a generation that had spent its middle age examining all the ways it failed to measure up to the one that had come before—all fat, no muscle, less a beacon to the world than a bully, drunk on blessings taken for granted. It was tempting to say that Sept. 11 changed all that, just as it is tempting to say that every hero needs a villain, and goodness needs evil as its grinding stone. But try looking a widow in the eye and talking about all the good that has come of this. It may not be a coincidence, but neither is it a partnership: good does not need evil, we owe no debt to demons, and the attack did not make us better. It was an occasion to discover what we already were. “Maybe the purpose of all this,” New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani said at a funeral for a friend, “is to find out if America today is as strong as when we fought for our independence or when we fought for ourselves as a Union to end slavery or as strong as our fathers and grandfathers who fought to rid the world of Nazism.” The terrorists, he argues, were counting on our cowardice. They’ve learned a lot about us since then. And so have we. For leading that lesson, for having more faith in us than we had in ourselves, for being brave when required and rude where appropriate and tender without being trite, for not sleeping and not quitting and not shrinking from the pain all around him, Rudy Giuliani, Mayor of the World, is TIME’s 2001 Person of the Year.(From Time, December 31, 2001)

Andy's Hobbies Andy is always watching animal programs on TV.When he was a child his favorite books were Gerald Durrel's animal books. He also wrote down something about animals when he heard them — especially the ones that were about loving animals. He has always had pets. His first animal friends were pigs. And then he tried his best to persuade his parents to get a dog.For some reasons they did not seem to believe Andy would walk the dog three times a day,no matter how Andy promised he'd do it. He did his best to persuade them:he was good at drawing and left drawings of dogs all over the place. He ran to the library, borrowed all the dog books he could find, and left them lying around as well. His parents were quite used to his books lying around everywhere. Then Andy's mother was told a friend's cat had kittens and they could go and get one.At first Andy was a little disappointed. As time went by,he learned to love the cat so much he has had cats ever since. Cats let us know when it is time to change the sofa.Either when the fabric starts to look like Einstein's hair that has been combed with cat paws, thanks to the generous donation of cat hair. Larry Schwarz's Hobbies Larry Schwarz has played with toys all his life.As a child,he often pulled his toys apart, and then glued them back together. He made toy rockets, cars, and buildings out of boxes.Although he put his toys away long enough to become a lawyer,he never lost his childhood passion for toys.Schwarz dreamed up many toys while in school.Instead of taking notes in class,he filled 26 notebooks with toy sketches! Fall in Love with English Hiding behind the loose dusty curtain, a teenager packed up his overcoat into the suitcase. He planned to leave home at dusk though there was thunder and lightning outdoors. He had got to do this because he was tired of his parents’ nagging about his English study and did not want to go through it any longer. He couldn’t get along well with English and disliked joining in English classes because he thought his teacher ignored him on purpose. As a result, his score in each exam never added up to over 60. His partner was concerned about him very much. She understood exactly what he was suffering from, but entirely disagreed with his idea. In order to calm him down and settle his problem, she talked with him face to face and swapped a series of learning tips with him. The items she set down helped him find the highway to studying English well. The teenager was grateful and got great power from his friend’s words. Now, he has recovered from being upset and has fallen in love with English. 2 Different Countries Have Different Kinds of Englishes Voyages of people from England play an important part in spreading the English language. At present, English is frequently spoken as an official or common language in many countries, such as America, Singapore, Malaysia and some African countries. All based on British English, the English spoken in these countries can be well understood by native English speakers. But actually, these Englishes have been gradually changing in accents, spellings, expressions and the usage of vocabulary. Because of this fact, you can make use of the differences to tell which country the foreigners of your block are from. For example, if a boss fluently commands his driver, “Come up straight to my apartment by elevator and take some gas for my trucks and cabs”, instead of requesting, “Please come to my flat by lift and take some petrol for my lorries and taxis”, you can recognize his American identity, while the latter suggests that he is British .3.A Hard Trip一次辛苦的旅行 My sister was fond of traveling.
