Unit 6 Cultures and Festivals

1. What special festivals are there in China? Which do you like to celebrate? Opinion

I like the Spring Festival best.

Reason

It is an important occasion for family reunions. It’s a great time to catch up with relatives I ha ven’t seen all year.

Activities

On New Year’s Eve, family members sit at the table and have special holiday meal together.

After dinner, we watch a Spring Festival Gala on TV.

It is Chinese customs to stay up until the New Y ear comes.

Firecrackers are set off at midnight. Some years, we go to see professional displays, and some years we set off our own.

2.Do Chinese people often celebrate western festivals?

Opinion

Y es, some western festivals are celebrated by an increasing number of Chinese people.

Examples

Almost all the young people in big cities celebrate Christmas, although it is more commercial and doesn’t have the same religious significance. But you can feel a strong festival atmosphere on December 25th as Christmas decorations are everywhere.

Ce lebrating V alentine’s Day is also quite popular.

3.Describe a foreign food that you would like to try.

Sushi

What is it

A foreign food that I would like to try is Sushi, a traditional dish

originated in Japan.

Sushi is a dish consisting of cooked vinegary rice which is commonly topped with other ingredients, such as fish or other seafood, or put into

rolls.

It’s usually wrapped by a sheet of black seaweed wrapper with the help of a bamboo mat.

Where you can eat it

Nowadays, those seaweed wrappers can be bought in supermarkets or sushi shops. So food lovers can even try to make sushi on their own at

home.

Besides, people can also eat it in Japanese restaurants, too.

Follow the teacher’s instructions and discuss in pairs or groups to work out the best answers to the following questions.

1. Have you ever felt confused by the actions of someone from another culture? If so, describe it.

2. In your culture is it polite to be straightforward and direct when you talk to

someone? To whom is it OK and to whom is it not OK? Interview five of your classmates and then report your findings to the whole class.

3. Do you think “when in Rome, do as the Romans do” is always a good advice? Defend your viewpoint with justifiable evidence.

An example of the questionnaire f or “Straightforwardness”

1.Would you like to describe you as a straightforward person? If you don’t mind,

can you give an example?

2.What will you do if one of your family members wrongs you?

3.What will you do if one of your friends hurts your feeling badly?

4.What will you do if your intimate friend falls in love with a person whom you

know for sure is a playboy/playgirl?

5.What will you do if your sister wears a new dress which doesn’t fit her at all

no matter for the color or the style?

6.Will you tell your beloved who was diagnosed to have deadly disease?

7.What will you do if you found a stranger in front of you on bus wore the

T-shirt inside out?

8.Do you know how to decline others’ requests? Show it.

9.Do you like those who are very straightforward? Why or why not?

10.Which way do you think is better, to be direct or indirect to compliment others?

What about blame or complain about someone?

11.Is it polite to be straightforward and direct when you talk to someone?

12.To whom is straightforwardness OK and to whom is it not OK?

"when in Rome, do as the Romans do"

People from different places have different ways of acting, so it is important to try to do things the way local people do. Because this will make the local people feel more comfortable with you around, also you will feel closer to their culture.

So, imitating the local ways, you will learn more about their culture and tradition, also, you will be able to make many new friends.

Also, it could be fun. The traditions of the place you are visiting might be different and interesting at the same time. If you "do as the Romans do", you will do a lot of things that you wouldn't normally do. Who knows? Maybe you will discover some new talents in you. Therefore, "when in Rome, do as the Romans do" is a very good advice to tourists and visitors.

Unit 7 in or out of job

1. What is important in choosing a job?

?These factors include job satisfaction, working environment, place, pay, sense

of security, interpersonal relations, sense of accomplishment, chances of promotion etc.

2. Do many Chinese people shift jobs in a year? What's your opinion of people who often change their jobs?

?First, some companies are not worth a person's whole career life because they lag far behind their competitors in a certain industry. They offer much less reward for their employees and they do not have a fair promotion system or a reasonable welfare system. Some can barely survive in today’s competitive society. Therefore both in terms of remuneration as well as career prospect, working long for them is not wise.

?Second, it is not easy to find an ideal job the first time you look for it,especially for fresh university graduates. Sometimes it is only by trying several jobs can a person eventually know what he or she likes doing most or can do best. Sticking to the wrong type of work makes it impossible for a person to enjoy working.

?Third, some work is so boring that if someone keeps doing it for too long, people will feel dull and will become less interested and careful in doing that work.

3. Describe your ideal job.

What the job is.

?Well, if possible, I’d like to have a job as a volunteer teacher,

teaching kids in a foreign country.

Why you choose this kind of job.

I think the job is really interesting because it is one that combines

travelling, teaching and doing voluntary work.

It could take me to different parts of the world, so that I can experience different cultures, meet different kinds of people and help them get

through their hard time.

And at the same time, the experience could help me learn and grow, and in the end, make it easy for me to find out the real meaning of life.

Uint 8 money money

1. What would you do if you had a million dollars?

?Well, a million dollars isn’t what it used to be, but I suppose I would invest some of it, give some of it to charity and then blow the rest of it on travel and presents for my relatives or friends.

2. Do you think people’s attitude towards money changed in the past twenty years? What’s your attitude towards money?

?The older generation in China was very frugal. It gave them a sense of security to have a large nest egg. And they didn’t trust banks. My grandma kept her life’s savings hidden in her apartment.

?The younger generation is much more likely to use credit cards and to buy something flashy to show how much money they have.

?Money is very important for survival but once you have the bare necessities, I

think a lot of other things are more important than money.

?Personally, I’d rather sacrifice fame and fortune if it meant I could relax with my friends and family. I guess I’d rather have time than money.

3. Role play: you borrow money from your classmates.

?C: Hey Jayden, I was wondering if you could do me a favor.

?J: That depends. What is it?

?C: It's kind of a big favor. I'm absolutely flat broke, and I owe my landlady $200. She's given me until Friday to give it to her, but I don't get paid until next Monday. Do you think you could loan me some cash until I get paid?

?J: I'd love to help you out, but I'm a bit short on cash this month as well, I had to get a new engine put into my car, and that ate up my savings.

?C: If you can't give me the full amount, a fraction of it would still help. I'll pay you back on Monday. I promise.

?J: Let's see, I've got about $50 to get me through the weekend. I can only spare about $20. I would give you more if I had it, I just don't have much money to my name right now.

?C: Thanks a lot Jayden. Every little bit will help. Tell you what, if you aren't doing anything tonight, why don't you come over and have dinner at my place.

?J: That'd be great. Thanks! What time should I come over?

?C: How about at 6pm?

?J: See you then!

?Y ou pay your money and you take your choice.

?Everyone knows the value of money. Nothing can be bought without money.

Life demands money. To live within your means is good economy. Happy are those who act upon this rule. To save money is far better than to waste it. It is so useful that it is loved by almost every man.

?However, money can be evil when wrongly used. It may bring you sadness, misery, and even ruin. One should not waste their money on gambling, smoking, or drinking. One should avoid, however, parsimony lest they become

a miser.

?Money is an active thing. It should not be kept idle. One should use their money in doing something good. It is better to invest one’s money wisely than putting it into speculation.

?In short, one should use your money properly. Those who use it properly will find the way to success. One should get it properly, keep it safely, and spend it cleverly. The right use of money may bring one a comfortable life and a cheerful heart.

2. Have you ever met the situation that your parents have different attitudes toward your values about money?

?Do your parents interfere with how you spend your money?

?What do you do when there is a conflict between you and your parents on the money issue?

3. Do you support Ma’s decision of the transfer? Defend your viewpoint with justifiable evidences.

For

? 1. Ma did a right thing because he protected Chinese rights and prevented them from being taken advantage of by foreign enterprises. He is patriotic.

? 2. Ma did not break the contract because the contract was established without considering the benefits of all sides, so the contract was indeed unfair. Ma did this to defend his own right for his employees.

? 3. Ma’s transfer only proves one problem that there are too many bugs with China’s business policies. The incident might well help establish healthy economic and financial system.

? 4. Ma is a perfect model of Chinese businessman who realized his dreams with

arduous wok. He is creative and far-sighted.

Against

? 1. Ma broke his words and the contract, which shows that he lacks business morality.

? 2. Ma betrayed his business partners, which had a negative influence internationally and would make foreigners doubt Chinese honesty and integrity.

? 3. Ma simply played some tricks. His success only proved that he is opportunistic.

? 4. Ma took use of Chinese law to win himself benefits and profits, which can only show that he is selfish, hypocritical and crafty.

Unit 9 CHALLENGES IN EDUCATION

Part III Interaction

1. What is the student life like on campus?

?University is a good place for acquiring academic and social skills. Well, on

one hand my life is enriched by extracurricular activities like sports, V olunteers League, etc. On the other hand, I am busy with endless coursework, papers and deadlines.

2. Do you know some differences between Chinese and American parenting styles?

?independence

?interests

?creativity

?psychological health

?fame

?relationship with parents

Differences in the cultivation of children’s independence

American parents love their children but they educate them to be independent, and when their children become adults, they ask them to live by themselves and make their own decision.

Chinese parents often spoil their children and do everything for their children. For instance, in China, if a child want to buy expensive clothes, they often make all-out

effort to satisfy their child’s demand, even sacrifice themselves.

Differences in the cultivation of children’s creativity

American parents encourage their children to innovate and surpass their predecessors in all fields. They encourage children to explore and provide very different views on some problems and let children solve these problems through their own efforts.

Chinese parents are always just satisfied with their children to imitate others. They always hold a negative attitude toward children’s exploration activities, and these activities are always stopped by their parents. The children’s creativity is usually ruined by their parents’strict supervision in the early age.

3. Describe a challenging experience or opportunity you met in the university.

?Y ou should say:

What the challenge or opportunity is.

How you overcome or grasp it.

What you have learned from this experience.

Reference

What the challenge or opportunity is.

?I want to talk about an interpreting activity I attended five years ago when I

was still a postgraduate.

How you overcome or grasp it.

?It was on the occasion of a very important international academic conference

hosted by my university. The theme was about Higher Education Development and most of the guests were world-famous scholars in Education and senior government officials working in related departments. Then luckily or unluckily, the university appointed me to be the interpreter for one of the keynote speakers, David, who was a department director. I was really freaked out in the beginning that I might screw up his lecture. But I realized it was a great opportunity to practice my English and that I couldn’t let him down, so I pulled myself together and got down to making preparation for his speech. What you have learned from this experience.

?I did a good job and the university later gave me a reward. I’ve learned that

your strongest enemy is not others but yourself. Hard work will pay off.

Part V Performance

1. There are five styles of parenting based on Dr. Baumrind.

?5-year-old preschooler: authoritarian or authoritative?

?14-year-old teenager: authoritative or permissive?

?21-year-old college student: permissive or uninvolved?

2. an interview: “the biggest challenge of the university life”.

?What kinds of academic activities are there in your university? What kinds of

academic activities have you participated in on campus?

?Is cheating in exam and plagiarism common in your university? Is there any

punishment on cheating in exam and plagiarism?

?Do you think it is a good or bad to have a part-time job while in university?

?What should the relationship be between your part-time job and your studies?

?Have you ever skipped class? If so, what are the main reasons you skip class?

Who do you think should be blamed for the mandatory attendance of students?

?How can a college student prepare to find a job?

?Should textbooks be more practical or theoretical?

?What do you think is the best way to avoid conflicts in a dormitory?

?What’s your opinion on campus love?

?Are you satisfied with the dining condition in your university?

3. Tiger mother or Cat Father

? A Chinese father claims himself to be a “Cat”, a docile and gentle role in

Chinese culture, who successfully sent his daughter to Harvard University in a liberal teaching style.

?As a post-graduate student of many years of education, which role will you

assume in your future role of parenting, a tiger or a cat?

Tiger Mother

?Chua did not let her own girls go out on play dates or sleepovers. She did not

let them watch TV or play video games or take part in garbage activities like crafts. Once, one of her daughters came in second to a Korean kid in a math competition, so Chua made the girl do 2,000 math problems a night until she regained her supremacy. Once, her daughters gave her birthday cards of insufficient quality. Chua rejected them and demanded new cards. Once, she threatened to burn all of one of her daughter’s stuffed animals unless she played a piece of music perfectly. As a result, Chua’s daughters get straight As and have won a lot of musical competitions.

Cat Father

?Confidence, kindness, honesty and independence are the most important

qualities to develop in a child, Chang says. Chang disagrees with Tiger Mother Amy Chua. “She imposes parents’ideas on children, ignores their demands and views kids as those being educated and shaped,”he says, adding that parents can learn a lot from their children. “She only seems to cultivate children’s skills, while ignoring their personality and characteristics.

“Respect should be the core of family education,”Chang concludes. Conversation Skills in Debate

?Asking for clarification

I didn’t follow what you said about…

I don’t see what you mean.

I don’t get your point.

What exactly are you getting at?

What exactly are you trying to tell me?

Unit 10LAWS TO BE WEIGHED

Part III Interaction

1. Juvenile delinquency is increasing nowadays and how to solve this problem?

?Figure out what is juvenile delinquency.

?List reasons for the phenomenon (family, school, society).

?Give measures to solve the problem

Reference: reasons for the phenomenon

Ill-treatment or lack of proper guidance at home can lead teenagers astray.

Poor grades and other unpleasant experiences at school are for many minor offenders a starting point on the road toward delinquency.

Negative influences from TV programs and games could also lead the youngsters to commit crimes.

Reference: measures to solve the problem

Families, schools and society as a whole, should attach greater importance to the issue and take better care of teenagers

physiologically and psychologically. Children sometimes get into

trouble because of the special mindset during puberty. These

psychological and physical conditions can make them commit crimes.

And sometimes it's because of the negligence from families or schools.

Parents and teachers, therefore, should be on guard against early signs

of moral aberrance in youngsters in order to lead them back to the

normal track as soon as possible. Proper ideological guidance from

teachers and parents could have kept many minor offenders from

committing crimes.

For those who has experienced in juvenile delinquency, show them leniency and help them return to school or find jobs in the hope they

become accepted by society and recover from their individual traumas.

2. Can you drive? What is a suitable age, do you think, for your kids to start driving?

?Y es,I can drive. My parents didn’t allow me to drive a car until I have

graduated from the college. And, in my opinion, kids should be enough mature to drive a car, so I will give them the right to drive when they are 20.

3. Describe a law you are familiar with.

?Y ou should say:

?What the law is.

?When it went into effect.

?What the content is.

Describe a law by talk about “what”, “when”, “the content”and “how”.

?New Labor law

?Transportation Regulations

?Environmental Protection law

?Taxation law

?new plastic-bags standards

?One Child Policy

? 1. The images of 9/11 are seared into our national memory—hijacked planes

cutting through a cloudless September sky; the Twin Towers collapsing to the

ground; black smoke billowing up from the Pentagon; the wreckage of Flight

93 in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, where the actions of heroic citizens saved

even more heartbreak and destruction.

? 2. On September 11, 2001, in our time of grief, the American people came

together. We offered our neighbors a hand, and we offered the wounded our blood. We reaffirmed our ties to each other, and our love of community and country. On that day, no matter where we came from, what God we prayed to, or what race or ethnicity we were, we were united as one American family.

?Then, last August, after years of painstaking work by our intelligence

community, I was briefed on a possible lead to bin Laden. It was far from certain, and it took many months to run this thread to ground. I met repeatedly with my national security team as we developed more information about the possibility that we had located bin Laden hiding within a compound deep inside of Pakistan. And finally, last week, I determined that we had enough intelligence to take action, and authorized an operation to get Osama bin Laden and bring him to justice.

2. Do you prefer a strong government or a weak government?

Ideal Government

?What do you think of China’s government?

?What do you think makes an ideal government? Name some characters.

?Must a government be too strong for the liberties of its people or too weak to

maintain its own existence?

?Do you prefer a strong government or a weak government?

?What is the role played by the government?

?List the benefits brought by the government to people.

?Is there any negative influence of the government on people?

?Are there any incompatible conflicts between the government and people?

What are they?

?How does corruption influence the relationship between people?

?Do you have confidence in Chinese government’s fight against corruption? Gettysburg Address By Abraham Lincoln

?Four score and seven years ago, our fathers brought forth upon this continent a

new Nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal. Now, we are engaged in a great Civil War, testing whether that Nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battlefield of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field as a final resting-place for those who gave their lives that Nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.

?But, in a larger sense, we cannot dedicate, we cannot consecrate, we cannot

hallow this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it far above our power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us, the living, rather to be dedicated to the great task remaining

before us; that from these honored dead, we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion; that this Nation, under GOD, shall have a new birth of freedom; and that government of the People by the People and for the People shall not perish from the earth.

3. Is it necessary or possible to ban using animals in experiments? Hold a debate on animal experiments.

?Pros

Experiments on animals should be considered on a case-by-case basis. The proper principle to apply, however, is that the reduction of human suffering is our first priority and the prevention of animal suffering or death is secondary to that (although still important). Animal experimentation is the (sometimes distasteful) means to much greater ends.

Although in principle it is more important to reduce human suffering that to prevent animal suffering, in practice it is possible (and absolutely right) to keep animal suffering to an absolute minimum. In short, it is possible to experiment on animals without being cruel to animals.

Past experience has shown what invaluable advances can be made in medicine by experimenting on animals, and that live animals are the most reliable subjects for testing medicines and other products for toxicity.

Human beings share about 99% of their genes with chimpanzees and only slightly fewer with other monkeys. As a result, the reactions of these creatures are a very good guide to possible reactions of human patients.

There are indeed new issues raised by the advent of genetic engineering and 'transgenic' animals; these, like all animal experiments should be closely monitored so as to minimize animal suffering. The fact that there are new issues here does not mean that there should never be any experiments on animals.

What is often overlooked in this debate is the subject of veterinary medicine. It is in the interests of animals themselves that experiments be done on animals to test medicines and surgical procedures for using on animals themselves, not just on humans.

Cons

?Animals have the right to be treated as beings of value in themselves, not as

the means to human ends; this principle must be applied in order to guarantee the end of cruelty to animals. The application of this principle means that animals should never be experimented upon whatever the potential gain for humanity.

?In practice, as everyone knows, animals are not routinely treated well by

animal experimenters. It is idealistic to suppose that this will ever stop as long as society endorses vivisection.

?In fact few breakthroughs have been made as a result of animal

experimentation—its advocates have overstated its achievements. There has been a catalogue of errors and failures in animal testing, which its advocates gloss over; as many as half the drugs that have been approved in the US and the UK after animal testing have subsequently had to be withdrawn because of harmful side-effects.

?In fact, most animal experiments are done on animals that are nothing like

human beings. Each species has its own unique physiology. And the more similar an animal is to a human being - e.g. a chimpanzee - the more intelligent and sentient it is, and so the more immoral it is to treat it as a disposable and worthless biological object.

?The advent of genetic technologies has made possible all sorts of new and

horrific acts of animal exploitation, from cloning sheep to creating mutant and hybrid creatures with no dignity or quality of life at all.

?It is only acceptable to test human medicines on human beings if they give

their consent. Non-human animals are never able to give such consent. Expressions for clarification

?That’s not exactly what I mean…

?Let me put it another way…

?Let me explain it further…

?Let me try that again…

?What I tried to say is that …

Unit 11 Love and Marriage

Part III Interaction

1. What does real love mean?

?Well, that’s a difficult question, especially for someone who has never

actually been in love like me.

?I think the concept of real love, or true love has various meanings to different

people. Some people might define it as a kind of mania in which people indulge in.

?From what I see, however, real love means not only a pleasure, but also

loyalty and obligation, which indicates that so indispensable does a person mean to you that you are willing to sacrifice everything you have for his or her well being.

2. What has resulted in the increasing divorce rate in modern society?

?Men and women have to confront much more challenges and stress in modern

society. As a result, they tend to be more fragile in a sense, which will lead to more out-of-marriage love affairs.

?People have higher expectations on life. They would rather change than stick

to a dull unhappy relationship at the cost of their life-long happiness.

?People have less sense of responsibility for others and the family. They care

more about their own happiness; if they feel that they are not quite satisfied with the present marriage, many people would like to turn to the solution of abandoning the old relationship and find new happiness.

?Women’s social position is much higher and they pay more attention to their

own career and success. Many of them don’t want to sacrifice their own career to support their husbands. Thus the stability in traditional families is easily broken if the husbands can’t understand and support their wives.

Part V Performance

1. What qualities in a partner are important to you?

?One can be unhappy by oneself, but to be truly tormented, one must love.

?Love is harder to accept than to give.

?To love is to embrace life. To love fully is to embrace both death and life.

The secret of happiness is simple: be loving, giving, caring,

?Why, then, are so many unhappy?

Because they are afraid.

?Love only yourself, and you are alone.

Love only one other, and the two of you are alone.

Love only your family, and your family is alone.

Love only your nation, and your nation is alone.

There can be no communion, not even with yourself, except through love of God.

Unit 12 Information Age

Part III Interaction

1. What are the impacts of hi-tech on human beings?

Positive

?On one hand, it saves us a lot of time and makes life efficient.

Negative

?On the other hand, it seems people have less free time than ever as people are

so addictive to some entertainment technologies such as text message.

?Besides, the side effects of hi-tech, like mobile phones, are still unknown to us

though technology keeps advancing.

2. Do you think people rely too much on information technology nowadays?

?I think most people rely too much on it. They more often turn to it for help,

like communicating on telephone, amusing themselves on the internet and so on. I think we should actually get away from it and back to nature.

3. Describe a good website you have used.

What the website is

?I think I would like to choose https://www.360docs.net/doc/9d8370505.html,, which is one of the most popular

websites featuring news in China.

What you use it for

?I really need to add that the website provides a range of news from global

update to entertainment or sports news and it really entitles me to the access to what is going on around the globe. For example, when the earthquake happened in Japan, it was just through this website that I knew about the natural disaster.

Why it is good

?The quality of the news is good.

How can we keep friendship alive? As for me, I regard friendship as a very important part in my life.Just imagine a life, there’s no one to be your friend. What life could be if you had no friend to talk to , no friend to comfore you and cheer you up when you were having a hard time,no friend to lend you a hand when you needed help …… Life without friends is unthinkable ... We have to do hard work to build up and sustain our friendship. First, let your friends know that you really care about them. It’s important to give some cues to your friends. To begin with, we need to be honest with others and always say what we mean. Lies will surely make people stay far away from us in the long run. After all, honesty is the best policy. Second, we have to be humble enough. If we are proud in public, we can hardly win other's respect, not to mention "friendship" . Finally, we must not be selfish. We should learn how to show concern for others. As long as we abide[?'ba?d] by what is mentioned above, we will find it easy to get along well with others.

For example, some college students who are tattooed think tattooing is cool and shows great personality. But teachers and parents do not think tattooing is right for students. They believe to be a student you should dress like a student--no tattoos, of cause. Some people even believe that those who are tattooed are not good students. As far as I am concerned, although many people can not accept students’ tattooing, nothing is wrong with tattooing. College students are grown-ups. They can tell right from wrong. If they want to be tattooed, just remember to tell them to select clean places, preferably with parental consents. 3.What do cultural difference mean ? Can you give some examples? Cultural differences mean differences among people in ways of thinking, life, aesthetic concepts, social practices, diet and etc. Let’s talk about, for example, eating habits in different areas. In China, people prefer vegetables and fruits, for the Chinese believe that such things are rich in vc, which are good to health. However, western people are more likely to eat meat. Known as having a good tradition of hospitality , Chinese people always greet their guests with warm hand. Chinese meal table normally is filled with delicious food, yet the host is used to saying " I am sorry. I don’t think the food is good enough today" and other courtesies. Host or hostess sometimes use their chopsticks to take food to the guest’s bowl, which is considered as a way to show hospitality in China. However, in western countries, people emphasize respect to individuality. At dinner, people eat whatever they like or we say they eat at their own will. 4.Do you consider your 18th birthday is one of the most important days in your life? Give reasons. Yes, 18th birthday is considered the most important. Each birthday means a new year. I am most concerned about my 18th birthday as it is a sign of adulthood, indicating that I am no longer a child, but one who can try to do things independently and should be reliable for his or her own actions as an adult. Since my eighteenth birthday, I am entitled to go shopping alone, to travel alone and to live independently. I still remembered my 18th birthday. After my birthday celebration, I suddenly felt grown up, both physically and mentally. Birthday to me is an important turning point, enabling me to learn and think independently. So far as I am concerned about each birthday, I usually feel better.
