Passage 1 Christmas Day

Tom is an American boy. He likes Christmas very much. It often snows on this day. The earth, trees and houses are all wearing beautiful clothes. People will put a beautiful Christmas tree in front of the house or in the room and the tree is full of candies.

On Christmas Day, Tom can get some gifts from Father Christmas. Father Christmas is an old man. He has a red hat and a red coat; he has white hair, two large eyes and a red nose. He is really kind to children. At night, he will put his gifts on the children’s bed.

At daytime, Father Christmas walks in the white field after his deer. He will send his gifts to every child. However, only good children can get his gifts. If the children often tell lies, if they don’t study hard, or if they don’t listen to their parents, they can’t get his gifts.

Passage 2 April Fools’ Day

April Fools’ Day came about in France in 1582. In the 16th century France, the start of the New Year was observed on April 1st. It was celebrated in much the same way as it is today with parties and dancing to music into the late hours of the night. Then in 1582, Pope Gregory introduced a new calendar for the Christian world and the New Year fell on January 1st. There are some people, however, who hadn’t heard the news or didn’t believe the change in the date, so they continued to celebrate New Year’s Day on April 1st. Others played tricks on them and called them “April Fools”. They sent them on a “fools errand” or tried to make them believe that something false was true. Gradually, this festival comes to other countries, as well as to China in the twentieth century. On that day, people will play all kinds of tricks, even the president may lie to you too. You must be careful, don’t believe it if someone gives you a ticket for a movie, even a small letter may be a trick. They are lying not for chocolate but for fun.

Passage 3 International chess

In China, people are more likely to play Chinese chess, but for western people, they are good at chess. Chess has thirty-two chessmen, two different colors, usually white and black, before the game starts, two players put their sixteen chessmen at the first two rows in order. The game starts, two players move their chessman one following the other. Different chessmen have different rules to move. When one of the players couldn’t move any more, the game is over.

About chess, there is an international chess league. 169 countries have taken part in this league; they set rules of chess, organize international matches together. In these international matches, people will use a clock to check the time for each one, players have to play in a limited time, or he will lose.

Playing chess can help people become smarter. Because when people play, they will think a lot about how to play and how to win the game. Usually, people who can play chess well are smart.

Nowadays, to play chess on the computer or to play on-line with other people is very popular. And this will make chess more and more popular.

(Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland)两块。

In the past few weeks, we spent 10 lessons on essentials of British & American cultures study. In this course, we learn in brief about the history and government system etc. During the Learning process, what impresses me most is the cowboys. An integral part of the story of America, the cowboy is a national icon, a romantic, rugged metaphor for America’s frontier past, Westward expansion and creation myths. Sensationalizedby Hollywood and by real-life bad boys, the heroic, hard-working, hard-riding, free-thinking cowboy is inseparable from American history itself. America’s first cowboys came from Mexico. Beginning in the 1500s, vaqueros—the Spanish term for “cowboy”—were hired by ranchersto drive and tend to livestockbetween Mexico and what is now New Mexico and Texas. During the early 1800s, and leading up to Texas’s independence from Mexico in 1836, the number of English speaking settlers in the area increased. These American settlers took their cues from the vaquero culture, borrowing clothing styles and vocabulary and learning how to drive their cattle in the same way. The vaquero influence persisted throughout the 1800s. Cowboys came from a variety of backgrounds, and included European immigrants, African Americans, Native Americans and Midwestern and Southern settlers. In the nineteenth century, one out of three American cowboys in the south was Mexican. As America built railroads further and further west, fostering industry, transportation and white settlements in former Indian territories, the cowboy played a crucial part in the nation’s expansion. In the early 1800s, Texas cattleman had herded cows via the Shawnee Trail to cattle markets in St. Louis and Kansas City. During the 1860s and following the Civil War, they began herding via the Chisholm and Western Trails towards the new railroads in Kansas, where livestock was then loaded into freight cars and transported to markets around the country. In less than two decades cowboys herded more than six million cows and steers to the railroads. Most cowboys were young—the average age was 24—and hard-working men in need of quick cash, although the pay was low. The work was exhausting and lonely. Cowboys also helped establish towns, spending their money in the “cowtown” settlements across the wes t during their time off. Townspeople frowned oncowboys as lawless troublemakers who brought nothing but violence and immorality, and some even banned them from town. Ranching, or the raising of cattle or other livestock on range land, also expanded during the late nineteenth century. The forced removal of Native Americans and the clearing of the American frontier resulted in the near extinction of the region’s many buffalo and bison. This land, now dominated by white homesteaders, was used for ranching. Public lands on the Great Plains constituted “open range,” where any white settler could buy and raise cattle for grazing. The invention and distribution of barbed wire in the 1870s revolutionized the concept of privately owned land in the Midwest, fencing off homesteads suitable for farming and ranching—but also limiting the work to be done by cowboys. With the rise of private landholdings in the late 1800s, the cattle driving industry had lost its cachet. Private landowners and “free grazers”—vaqueros and cowboys alike—locked horns over what was appropriate use for land whose ownership was also in question. By the 1890s, the wide open ranges and cattle trails were gone and privatized, and the days of the long cattle drives to

Historic events 一)Hundred Years’ war 百年战争 It was a series of separate conflicts between the Kingdom of England and the Kingdom of France and their various allies for control of the French throne, which had become vacant upon the extinction of the senior Capetian line of French kings. Time: From1337 to 1543 The war is commonly divided into three or four phases, separated by various unsuccessful truces: ①the Edwardian War (1337–1360); ②the Caroline War (1369–1389); ③the Lancastrian War (1415–1453); Cause: The background to the conflict is to be found in 1066, when William, Duke of Normandy, led an invasion of England. He defeated the English King Harold II at the Battle of Hastings, and had himself crowned King of England. As Duke of Normandy, he remained a vassal of the French King, and was required to swear fealty to the latter for his lands in France; for a king to swear fealty to another king was considered humiliating, and the Norman Kings of England generally attempted to avoid the service. On the French side, the Capetian monarchs resented a neighboring king holding lands within their own realm, and sought to neutralize the threat England now posed to France The King of England directly ruled more territory on the continent than did the King of France himself. This situation – in which the kings of England owed vassalage to a ruler who was de facto much weaker – was a cause of continual conflict. John of England inherited this great estate from King Richard I. However, Philip II of France acted decisively to exploit the weaknesses of King John, both legally and militarily, and by 1204 had succeeded in wresting control of most of the ancient territorial possessions. Significance: The Hundred Years' War was a time of military evolution. Weapons, tactics, army structure, and the societal meaning of war all changed, partly in response to the demands of the war, partly through advancement in technology, and partly through lessons that warfare taught. The war also stimulated nationalistic sentiment. It devastated France as a land, but it also awakened French nationalism. The Hundred Years' War accelerated the process of transforming France from a feudal monarchy to a centralized state. The conflict became one of not just English and French kings but one between the English and French peoples. There were constant rumours in England that the French meant to invade and destroy the English language. National feeling that emerged out of such rumours unified both France and England further. The Hundred Years War basically confirmed the fall of the French language in England, which had served as the language of the ruling classes and commerce there from the time of the Norman Conquest until 1362 Important Figures: England King Edward III 1327–1377 Edward II's son
