Professor: Hi, Jane. I’ve been meaning to talk to you. I’m afraid I have some bad news.

Jane: What’s wrong, Professor Barry?

Professor: Well, it’s the poetry reading we’ve been organizing. It turns out that the new arts center isn’t going to be ready on time. So we won’t be able to hold the reading there.

Jane: But it’s scheduled for next week and it was supposed to be the opening event. I mean we’ve had a lot of local poets coming, and a lot of student poets, too.

Professor: So it looks like we may have to come up with a different plan.

Jane: Hum, I wonder if we could postpone the reading and then reschedule it once the center is finished.

Professor: That’s possible, and then the reading would still be the first event there, which would be nice.

Jane: Right. It’s just that we may not be able to get as many poets if we change the date. Several of them might have other plans.

Professor: Oh, that’s a good point.

Jane: Well, instead of postponing it, we could try having the reading at the auditorium in the library. It’s quite small, so, it might actually be better for reading. You know, cozier, less formal.

Professor: True, of course. Then fewer people can attend because the space is smaller. And I bet a lot of people would want to come.

The student and the professor discuss two possible solutions to the student's problem. Briefly summarize the problem. Then state which solution you recommend and why.

Well, the woman has got a problem that she is supposed to organize the poetry reading next week but the arts center, where the reading will be held, isn't going to be ready on time. There are two solutions for the woman to solve the problem. She could put off the reading and reschedule it once the center is finished or she could hold the reading at the auditorium in the library. I guess the woman should take the second solution for two reasons. First of all, it's not easy to call all these poets together if she choose to reschedule the reading on another day, and having the reading at the auditorium could at least make sure these poets have time to come. Second, an auditorium may be a better choice for holding the reading since it is cozier and less formal, and people may feel more comfortable there. The smaller place wouldn't be a problem because there must be some poets who won't be able to come, so actually the auditorium is large enough for a good number of people. All in all, I agree that the woman should hold the reading in the auditorium instead of rescheduling it on another day.

TPO 17 Task1 Talk about a special opportunity that was given to you. Explain why the opportunity was important. Task2 State whether you agree or disagree with the following statement. Then explain your reasons, using specific details in your explanation. Students should not be allowed to bring cell phones into the classroom. Task3 New Library Workspaces Say good-bye to the big, multi person study tables in Turner Library. This summer, the tables will be exchanged for new personal study cubicles---small, one-person desks enclosed by walls. These new units will allow students to have privacy and work in isolation and will therefore eliminate noise in the library so students can concentrate. Additionally, the cubicles will enable the library to accommodate the recent increase in the number of students attending our university. Although the current tables seat six students each, they make poor use of the available floor space. The cubicles, on the other hand, are designed for maximum space efficiency, and the library can therefore add 50 new seats. The man expresses her opinion about the upcoming change. State her opinion and explain the reasons she gives for holding that opinion. Task4

精听材料有很多,推荐SSS(Scientific American’s Sixty-second Science),它非常短,但信息量很大,更重要的是,它是新托福听力出题的重要来源。 我认为泛听的材料有两个:一个是National Geographic(国家地理频道),另一个是Discovery(探索)。

Reading As early as the twelfth century A.D., the settlements of Chaco Canyon in New Mexico in the American Southwest were notable for their "great houses," massive stone buildings that contain hundreds of rooms and often stand three or four stories high. Archaeologists have been trying to determine how the buildings were used. While there is still no universally agreed upon explanation, there are three competing theories. One theory holds that the Chaco structures were purely residential, with each housing hundreds of people. Supporters of this theory have interpreted Chaco great houses as earlier versions of the architecture seen in more recent Southwest societies. In particular, the Chaco houses appear strikingly similar to the large, well-known "apartment buildings" at Taos, New Mexico, in which many people have been living for centuries.

口语第一题(16套) 2009.1.10 Q1 Which of the following features do you think is the most important in friendship: honesty, loyalty or humor? Please include specific examples and details in your explanation. Sample answer I think the most important quality in friendship is loyalty. Loyalty means always being honest to your friends and staying right beside them when they feel down. I'd love to talk about Tom. We've been good friends since we were kids. Once I forgot to bring my lunch to school, Tom immediately took out his lunch and gave it to me. Besides, he is always the first one to point out my weakness directly. Thanks to his straightforwardness, I made quite a progress. I really appreciate his loyalty and treat him as my lifelong friend. 2009.2.14 Q1 Which important skill do you think a student should learn? Please include specific examples and details in your explanation. Sample answer I think students need to learn communication skills. It is impossible to overstate the importance of good communication skills. In today's society we have to work cooperatively with others. A good communicator finds it easier to put forth his ideas clearly. In this way, there will be fewer misunderstandings. In addition, a person with good communication skills is a good mediator and negotiator. He or she can play a valuable role in resolving disputes and enhancing cooperation. This means that a good communicator is often a natural leader. 2009.3.29 Q1 Describe a day that you enjoy the most or is the most special for you. However, there are efforts to persuade doctors to adopt electronic medical record systems in which information about patients is stored in electronic databases rather than on paper. It is argued that storing patients' medical records in electronic databases has several advantages over traditional paper-based record keeping. Reducing Costs First, the use of electronic records can help reduce costs by saving money on storing and transferring medical records. While paper records require a significant amount of storage space, electronic medical records take up virtually no space. Moreover, by having patients' records computerized in databases, doctors can easily access the records from almost anywhere and can easily duplicate and transfer them when necessary. This costs much less than copying, faxing, or transporting paper records from one location to another. Preventing Errors Second, electronic medical records are crucial to reducing the chances of medical errors. Illegible handwriting, improper transcription of data, and nonstandard organization of paper records have caused errors that in some cases have had serious consequences for the patients' health. In contrast, electronic records are associated with standardization of forms and legible computer fonts and thus minimize the possibility of human error. Aiding Research Third, electronic medical records can greatly aid medical research by making it possible to gather large amounts of data from patient records. It is often impractical, impossible, or prohibitively expensive to manually go through thousands of patients?ˉ paper records housed in doctors' offices. However, with the existence of electronic medical records, it would be simple to draw out the needed information from the medical databases because the databases are already formatted for data collection. Once in the electronic system, the records could be accessed from any research location. ????íD?£TPO46×?o?D′×÷ìyá|?-????±?£o ????The benefits claimed for electronic medical records are actually every uncertain. ????First, the costs savings are unlikely be as significant as the reading suggests. For example, there probably won't be any savings related to record storage. You see, doctors who adopt electronic records usually don't throw out or discontinue the paper records. They keep the paper records as an emergency backup or because the paper originals with signatures are needed for legal reasons. So as a result, most doctors who adopt electronic record keeping still have to pay storage costs associated with paper-based record keeping. ????Second, electronic medical records cannot eliminate the possibility of errors

In such environments, some animals collect and prepare food when it is plentiful, then hoard it – store it – for future use. Some types of hoarders engage in scatter hoarding. Unlike other types of hoarders, scatter hoarders do not store the food all in once place; instead, they scatter it – divide it up and hide it in many different places. Later, at a time when food is scarce, the hoarders return to these hiding places and recover the food. Now listen to part of a lecture on this topic in a biology class. (male professor) OK, so we sometimes see this with animals that live in parts of the world where it gets very cold in the winter. For example, in the northeaster United States, there's a species of squirrels that does this. This squirrel, like many species of squirrel, loves to eat nuts. Nuts are one its primary sources of food. Now, nuts are very difficult to find in the winter. But in the autumn, they are lying all over the place because that's when they fall from the trees. So, what this squirrel does is in the autumn it spends a lot of time finding nuts. After it finds a nut, it prepares it. It takes off the outer shell and cleans it. This preparation may in some way help preserve the nut and or may make it easier to eat later on. The squirrel then digs a little hole in the ground and buries the nut. In one autumn, this squirrel may bury hundreds of nuts. But it doesn't just dig a big hole and put all the nuts in it and cover them up. No, it digs hundreds of holes all over the place. And it puts just one nut in each hole. Now, why would it do that? Well, probably primarily because even if other animals happen to find some of the holes, some of the nuts, the squirrel will still have a lot of other holes with nuts in them so it’ll still have enough food to survive the winter. Explain how the example from the professor’s lecture illustrate the practice of scatter hoarding. Animals usually hoard some food for the time when there's no food. Jane Austen (1775-1817) is one of the most famous of all English novelists, and today her novels are more popular than ever, with several recently adapted as Hollywood movies. But we do not have many records of what she looked like. For a long time, the only accepted image of Austen was an amateur sketch of an adult Austen made by her sister Cassandra. However recently a professionally painted, full-length portrait of a teenage girl owned by a member of the Austen family has come up for sale. Although the professional painting is not titled Jane Austen, there are good reasons to believe she is the subject. First, in 1882, several decades after Austen's death, Austen's family gave permission to use the portrait as an illustration in an edition of her letters. Austen's family clearly recognized it as a portrait of the author. So, for over a century now, the Austen family itself has endorsed the claim that the girl in the portrait is Jane Austen. Second, the face in the portrait clearly resembles the one in Cassandra's sketch, which we know depicts Austen. Though somewhat amateurish, the sketch communicates definite details about Austen's face. Even though the Cassandra sketch is of an adult Jane Austen, the features are still similar to those of the teenage girl in the painting. The eyebrows, nose, mouth, and overall shape of the face are very much like those in the full-length portrait. Third, although the painting is unsigned and undated, there is evidence that it was painted when Austen was a teenager. The style links it to Ozias Humphrey, a society portrait painter who was the kind of professional the wealthy Austen family would hire. Humphrey was active in the late 1780s and early 1790s, exactly the period when Jane Austen was the age of the girl in the painting. Professor:The evidence linking this portrait to Jane Austen is not at all convincing. Sure, the painting has long been somewhat loosely connected to Austen's extended family and their descendants, but this hardly proves it's a portrait of Jane Austen as a teenager. The reading's arguments that the portrait is of Austen are questionable at best.First, when the portrait was authorized for use in the 1882 publication of her letters, Jane Austen had been dead for almost 70 years. So the family members who asserted that the painting was Jane had never actually seen her themselves. They couldn't have known for certain if the portrait was of Austen or not.Second, the portrait could very well be that of a relative of Austen's, a fact that would explain the resemblance between its subject and that of Cassandra's sketch. The extended Austen family was very large and many of Jane Austen's female cousins were teenagers in the relevant period or had children who were teenagers. And some of these teenage girls could have resembled Jane Austen. In fact, many experts believe that the truesubject of the portrait was one of those relatives, Marianne Kempian,
