Wind is one of our oldest and cleanest power sources. Historians have found proof of windmills（风车）being used in Persia, an ancient Iranian Culture, as back as the seventh century B.C. They were first introduced to Europe during the 1100s.

When electricity was discovered in the late 1800s ,a new use for wind turbine（叶轮机）was found. People who lived in remote areas did not have electrical power. They equipped（安装）wind turbines to equipment that would turn the energy from the spinning blades into electricity. This process allowed farmers and their families to have electric lights and radio.

By the 1940s, electricity was used by people in almost all area of the United States. So windmills were rarely used. Even water pumps were run using electricity. However, during the 1970s, people started becoming concerned about the pollution that is created when coal and gas are burned to produce electricity.

Citizens who wanted to use cleaner, renewable energy sources rediscovered the wind . Today, there is a global movement to supply more and of our electricity through the use of wind turbines. One windmill does not produce very much energy. So windmill “farms” are built. Dozens of windmills spin together and create a large amount of energy. The best places for windmills are those places with the most wind, like the open plains of the central United States, on the ocean, and on mountain ridges.

Europe is leading the way in wind power. Nearly 75﹪of all turbines are located there. The country that produces the most energy from wind is Germany. However, Germany uses a lot of energy, and wind only supplies about 5﹪of all its electricity needs. Denmark is the global leader by using wind to supply almost 20﹪of its energy usage.

New Year’s celebrations are a little bit different all around the world. They are celebrated with different customs, traditions and special foods. They may even be observed at different times of the year. One of the same things is that they are all marked by a celebration and symbolic welcome of the new year while saying farewell to the old.

In the United States we use the Julian calendar（日历）,created by Emperor Julius Caesar. Celebrations usually begin on December 31, or New Year’s Eve, and continue on into January 1, the first day of the new year.

Making New Year’s decisions is popular American tradition. Many people see the beginning of a new year as the time to make change s or have a fresh start. New Year’s decisions can serve as promises or reminders to oneself of changes and improvements to be made over the course of the coming year.

Black-eyed peas, ham, and cabbage are traditional dishes to serve on New Year’s Day.

Peop le in other countries also have New Year’s traditions surrounding food. For example, the Dutch often eat doughnuts to welcome in the New Year.

In Japan, people eat long soba noodles in celebration. Eating these noodles without breaking them symbolizes（象征）long life. In Spain, there is the tradition of eating 12 grapes at midnight. This marks successful grape harvests of the past and the hope for more in future.

One of the most colorful New Year’s celebrations takes place in China. The Chinese New Year is determined by the lunar calendar, and falls between January 21 and February 19. The festival lasts about two weeks. During this time, towns are decorated with colorful lantern and flowers. Parades and fire works mark the festivals, and seafood and dumplings are traditionally eaten.
