Most people who fly on passenger planes in the United States do not lose their luggage. Even if the luggage is lost, usually it is only delayed. Most “lost” luggage is found in a few days. Airlines search for the owners of unclaimed(未被认领的) bags for up to three months. But when the owners cannot be found or the bags are not claimed, they are sold to a store in the small city of Scottsboro, in the southern state of Alabama.

About one-half of one percent of all luggage passing through US airports is unclaimed. Many of the missing bags, and what is in them, are sold at the Unclaimed Baggage Center. Seven thousand items arrive at the store every day.

Brenda Cantrell, who works at the store, said, “ The Unclaimed Baggage Center is the only store in America that buys and resells unclaimed baggage from the airline industry. You would be surprised at all the jackets, eyeglasses, neck pillows, blankets, laptops, Kindles, iPads and, you know, all kinds of expensive electronics.”

The store says it once sold a container for flowers for

$80 that was found to be worth $18,000. And it says a painting it sold for $25 was later found to be worth $25,000. The store buys the luggage from the airlines. It does not examine the things inside them before buying them. Only about half of the items in the bags are suitable for sale at the store.

Some people say it is not fair to the owners of the lost luggage to sell their goods. Customer Daniel Martin is not one of them.

“ I feel the airport may try to find the people that lose the things. If they’ve tried and they can’t get a hold of them, it’s better than throwing them away or just letting them rot in a warehouse somewhere.”

25. According to the text, what may happen to the US airline luggage?

C. Some luggage will be sold if nobody claims it.

A. He thinks it’s unusual.

B. He thinks it’s ridiculous.

C. He thinks it’s acceptable.

D. He thinks it’s inappropriate.

28. What would be the best title for the text?

A. What happens to lost US airline luggage?

This week,Google CFO Patrick Pichette made headlines when his resignation letter announcing his retirement surfaced in the media.

“After nearly seven years as CFO,” he began, “I will be retiring from Google to spend more time with my family.” What he wanted now was to enjoy life at home and abroad with his wife, to “carry our backpacks and hit the road.”

The media has described the letter as “powerful” and “unusually reflective.” Google co-founder and CEO Larry Page said, “It is well worth reading, an d it will warm your heart.”

But if Pichette’s work/life balance was achieved by quitting his job to go see the world, what message does it

send to the rest of us seeking work/life balance, in particular women?

A November 2014 study found that women show more signs of depression as they move up the career ladder. Similarly, a survey found that the pressure women put on themselves to balance work and family is causing them signficant stress. The survey also found that the majority of men expected their partners to take primary responsibility for childcare, and indeed that happened in more than 70% of cases.

Of course, one could argue that the idea of balancing work with life may be harder for men than for women, who are the traditional breadwinners and the ones more likely to find self-worth through their work. This is one reason we see many wealthy, powerful men working well into their 80s. At the same time, it’s easier for these men to make a decision to leave the whole thing early. Pichette retires as Google’s highest paid executive(执行官). He can afford to retire and not even have to work for the rest of his life. The rest of us are nowhere close to making that choice.

29. Pichette resigned because ____________.

A. he is too old to work

B. he has got tired of his job

C. he has some physical problems

D. he wants to enjoy life with his family

30. What can we infer from Paragraph5?

A. Women usually work harder than men.

B. Women’s work performance is better than men’s.

C. Women are better at taking care of kids than men.

D. Women have more difficulty seeking work/life balance.

31. According to the text, Pichette _______.

A. didn’t achieve work/life balance

B. doesn’t think he is a successful man

C. spent a lot of time caring for his children

D. thinks women should choose life over work

32. The author may agree that ______.

A. most people can’t give up work early

B. people should work as hard as possible

C. ordinary people can learn from Pichette

D. Pichette’s decision is hard to understand

D

To support his sick wife and earn a paycheck, a 61-year-old lowa man named Steve Simoff sometimes walks 35 miles to his job as an overnight gatekeeper. Simoff said that he leaves his basement apartment in a small town at about 3:30 p.m. to get to the Lakeside Hotel and Casino in Osceola where he begins to work at 11:00pm for $9.07 per hour. His wife suffered a stroke(中风) nine years ago and for some days there just isn’t enough money to put gas in the couple’s 2002 car. Moving closer to his job would likely mean paying more than he now does in monthly rent ---$400.

Family and a job are “the two most important things I can think of,” Simoff said, explaining why he walks to his job. He and his wife, Renee, adopted their now 22-year-old grandson, Steven, who has been unemployed since January.

Although some people along the route do stop to offer him

a lift, they often drop him off about 8 miles from home. But Simoff doesn’t seem to mind. He describes the walking route

as “picturesque(美如画的)” and so unds like he enjoys passing the cows and fields along the way. He’s done the walk in all kinds of weather, including snow. It’s a little dangerous because trucks frequent Interstate Highway 35, whizzing(嗖嗖飞驰) past him at 70 miles per hour.

Simoff’s sto ry has a familiar ring. Last month there were stories written about a Detroit man named James Robertson who

for years has been walking 21 miles roundtrip through city streets to and from his factory job. The media attention got Robertson $350,000 from a GoFundMe campaign and a new car. We wonder what the Internet holds for Simoff.

33. Stimoff walks 35 miles to his job mainly _____________.

A. to attract others’ attention

B. to keep healthy and strong

34. What do we know about Simoff’s walking route?

A. It is pretty boring.

B. There are high buildings.

C. It is full of fun and danger.

D. There are only a few regulars.

35. James Robertson is mentioned because ________.

A.his story inspired Simoff

B. he donated money

to Simoff

C. he is quite familiar with Simoff’s

D. his

experience is similar to Simoff’s

A Last Thursday, Michael and Linda stood behind large food trucks distributing meals to 4,000 homeless people for their wedding reception on the border town of Kilis. The couple had decided that instead of hosting their friends and family for a traditional feast reception, they would feed the victims from an earthquake-stricken area. The idea came from the bridegroom's father, Ted, who volunteers for a Turkish relief organization. For the past few years, the organization has distributed daily meals to thousands of people who've suffered from natural disasters. He approached a representative of the organization and suggested that the family cover part of the costs of feeding them for the day. Then he told his son, who was surprised by the suggestion, but soon won over. When he told that to the bride, she was really shocked but finally accepted because in southeastern Turkey there is a real culture of sharing with people in need. They love to share their food, their table and everything they have. And afterwards she was quite amazed about it. So, they arrived at the distribution center on Thursday to spend the day serving food and taking photographs with their grateful recipients(接受者). On Tuesday evening, the newly married couple were still pleased with their decision to quit a personal celebration for one with a greater good. "It's like sharing a dinner with your friends and family who have this kind of thing on a daily basis or sharing something with people who don't even have the most basic things," Michael said. "Hopefully, this will also give the start for other wedding dinners to be held here with our brothers and sisters in need." 1. Why did so many people c row d in Kilis? A. To attend Michael and Linda's wedding. B. To support the organization. C. To escape the damaging earthquake. D. To help distribute

Quiet carriages on trains are a nice idea: travelers voluntarily make their phones silent, turn stereos off and keep chatter to a minimum. However, in reality, there is usually at least one silly babbler(喋喋不休的人) to break the silence. A couple of problems prevent peaceful trips. First, there is a sorting problem: some passengers end up in the quiet carriage by accident and are not aware of the rules. Second, there is a commitment problem: noise is sometimes made by travelers who choose the quiet carriage but find an important call hard to ignore. The train operators are trying to find answers. Trains in Queensland Australia, are having permanent signs added to show exactly what is expected; a British operator has invested in some technology to prevent phone calls. Microeconomics suggests another approach. Fining people for making a noise would surely dissuade(劝阻) the polluter and is a neat solution in theory, but it requires costly monitoring and enforcement. Another way would be to use prices to separate quiet and noisy passengers-in effect, creating a market for silence. A simple idea would be to sell access to the quiet carriage as an optional extra when the ticket is bought. Making the quiet coach both an active choice and a costly one would dissuade many of those who don’t value a peaceful ride. Charging may also solve the commitment problem. This is particularly tricky, as attitudes to noise can
