I greet you on the re-commencement of our literary year. Our anniversary is one of hope, and,

We do not meet for games of strength or skill, for the recitation of histories, tragedies, and odes(颂诗,颂歌), like the ancient Greeks; for parliaments(集会) of love and poesy(诗歌), like the Troubadours(中世纪浪漫诗人); nor for the advancement of science, like our cotemporaries in the British and European capitals. Thus far, our holiday has been simply a friendly sign of the survival of the love of letters amongst a people too busy to give to letters any more. As such, it is precious as the sign of an indestructible instinct. Perhaps the time is already come, when it ought to be, and will be, something else; when the sluggard(懒惰的)intellect of this continent will look from under its iron lids (眼睑=eyelids), and fill the postponed expectation of the world with something better than the exertions(行使,发挥) of mechanical skill. The millions, that around us are rushing into life, cannot always be fed on the sere(干枯的,枯萎的)remains of foreign harvests. Events, actions arise, that must be sung, that will sing themselves. Who can doubt, that poetry will revive and lead in a new age, as the star in the constellation (星系)Harp, which now flames in our zenith(天顶), astronomers announce, shall one day be the pole-star(北极星)for a thousand years?

(“The American Scholar”An Oration delivered by Kalph Waldo Emerson (1803-1812) before the Phi Beta Kappa Society, at Cambridge, August 31, 1837 ------1837年8月31日在麻省剑桥城美国大学生联谊会Phi Beta Kappa Society发表的演说,被称为美国知识界的“独立宣言”)(美国伟大的思想家,演说家、诗人,散文家,美国超验主义的旗手,“美国民族精神之父”“美国精神的先知”,“美国的孔子”)会长,诸位:

1. When I wrote the following pages, or rather the bulk of them, I lived alone, in the woods, a

mile from any neighbor, in a house which I had built myself, on the shore of Walden Pond, in Concord, Massachusetts, and earned my living by the labor of my hands only. I lived there two years and two months. At present I am a sojourner(过客)in civilized life again.

I should not obtrude(强加,侵扰)my affairs so much on the notice of my readers if

very particular inquiries had not been made by my townsmen concerning my mode of life, which some would call impertinent(不着边际、不切题、不恰当), though they do not appear to me at all impertinent, but, considering the circumstances, very natural and pertinent. Some have asked what I got to eat; if I did not feel lonesome; if I was not afraid;

and the like. Others have been curious to learn what portion of my income I devoted to charitable purposes; and some, who have large families, how many poor children I maintained. I will therefore ask those of my readers who feel no particular interest in me to pardon me if I undertake to answer some of these questions in this book. In most books, the I, or first person, is omitted; in this it will be retained; that, in respect to (就…而言)egotism(言必称自我,念念不忘自己), is the main difference. We commonly do not remember that it is, after all, always the first person that is speaking. I should not talk so much about myself if there were anybody else whom I knew as well. Unfortunately, I am confined to this theme by the narrowness of my experience. Moreover, I, on my side, require of every writer, first or last, a simple and sincere account of his own life, and not merely what he has heard of other men's lives; some such account as he would send to his kindred(亲属)from a distant land; for if he has lived sincerely, it must have been in a distant land to me. Perhaps these pages are more particularly addressed to poor students.

As for the rest of my readers, they will accept such portions as apply to them. I trust that none will stretch the seams(线缝)in putting on the coat, for it may do good service to him whom it fits.

It therefore becomes more and more important that, if students are not to waste their opportunities, there will have to be much more detailed information about courses and more advice。

47 To err is human; to forgive, divine. Brevity is the soul of wit. Until these issues are resolved, a technology of behavior will continue to be rejected, and with it possibly the only way to solve our problems.(2002) 分析:很明显,and with it possibly the only way to solve our problem,是一个省略句,with 做状语一般表示伴随,这一个分句只有一个状语加一个名词结构,构不成一个完整的句子。 所以,后一分句补充完整就是:with the rejection of the technology of behavior, possibly the only way to solve our problem will continue to be rejected. 练习:1. The reasons for poverty are many, but for the most part center on illiteracy, the lack of opportunities and in some cases pure laziness. (主语the reasons) 2.He majors in English, and I, in French. (谓语major ) 3.Self-confidence gives you light when you are in dark and encouragement when you are dismay. See 材料48页1. 3.If handled properly and not misused, the clone technology will only bring more benefit than disaster to mankind. (条件状语从句) 4.Some people look as if afraid of nothing. (方式状语从句) 5.The computer is still not yet able to do the work as well as an intelligent secretary. 1 Actually we know of no type of astronomical body in which the conditions can be favorable to life except planets like our own revolving round a sun. in which引导定语从句,修饰astronomical body.

When they approached Trenton, lights were still burning in many of the houses and Christ mas parties were still going on. 2、翻译成固定(常规)句型 一般像由hardly (scarcely)…. when (before)…no sooner…than…as soon as …the moment(the instant )…just as… Hardly had the computer started working when viruses were found. As soon as she heard the news, she fainted. I was going home when I met Mary.

The lack of any special excretory system is explained in a similar way. (名词转译) As he ran out ,he forgot to have his shoes on. The earth on which we live is shaped a ball. (动词转译) The doctor did his best to cure the sick and the wounded. It is no use employing radar to detect objects in water. (作表语的名词转译) The sun affects tremendously both the mind and body of a man. When he catches a glimpse of a potential antagonist, his instinct is to win him over with charm and humor . They are as like as two peas . (形容词) He likes mathematics more than physics . (动词) Wheat, oat, and the like are cereals.

1. The latest was a panel from the National Academy of Sciences, enlisted by the White House, to tell us that the Earth’s atmosphere is definitely warming and that the problem is largely man-made. (2005. The latest was a panel from the National Academy of Science s to tell us that...and that...。 2. But science does provide us with the best available guide to the future, and it is critical that our nation and the world base important policies on the best judgments that science can provide concerning the future consequences of present actions. (2005. 【析句】首先,句子的主干science does provide us...future and it is critica l...。 t hat主语从句中,our nation and the world 是主语,base是谓语,important policies是宾语,on the best judgments 是宾语补足语,而judgments后有that引导的定语从句。 3. Just as on smoking, voices now come from many quarters insisting that the science about global warming is incomplete, that it’s OK to keep pouring fumes into the air until we know for sure. (2005. 【析句】句子的主干是voices now come from many quarters, insiting that...,that... 1. However, when two monkeys were placed in separate but adjoining chambers, so that each could observe what the other was getting in

A few years ago, in one of the most fascinating and disturbing experiments in behavioral psychology, Stanley Milgram of Yale University tested 40 subjects from all walks of life for their willingness to obey instructions given by a“leader”in a situation in which the subjects might feel a personal distaste for the actions they were called upon to perform. Stanley Milgram of Yale University tested 40 subjects from all walks of life. A few years ago, in one of the most fascinating and disturbing experiments in behavioral psychology为状语,修饰主干;for their willingness to obey instructions given by a“leader”in a situation也是状语,修饰主干;in which the subjects might feel a personal distaste for the actions为状语中的定语从句,修饰”situation”;(that)they were called upon to perform是定语从句中的定语从句,修饰”actions”。 A few years ago, in one of the most fascinating and disturbing experiments in behavioral psychology译为“几年前,在一次行为心理学中最吸引人但又最让人不安的实验中”。 Stanley Milgram of Yale University tested 40 subjects from all walks of life,译为“来自耶鲁大学的Stanley Milgram测试了来自各行各业的40个实验对象”。

At the very least, the court should make itself subject to the code of conduct that applies to the rest of the federal judiciary. At the very least在句首作状语,that 引导定语从句修饰the code of conduct。 4. They gave justices permanent positions so they would be free to upset those in power and have no need to cultivate political support. They gave justices permanent positions, so 引导目的状语从句,从句主干为they would be free...and have no need...。 5. Constitutional law is political because it results from choices rooted in fundamental social concepts like liberty and property. Constitutional law is political。 作定语修饰choices, 介词短语like liberty and property 修饰concepts。
