Strangers or Neighbours?

I suppose every neighbourhood is different.

I personally would feel a bit uncomfortable if I did the"Sunday best

door knocking"thing,and I would be a bit uncomfortable if I was

the person answering the door.

When we bought our home in Guangzhou,I found the neighbours

VERY friendly.Of course,I'm a very busy,"do it yourself"kind of a

guy,so when we were down there we would always be outside

weeding,trimming trees,cleaning gutters,etc.When I would see a

neighbour walk by,or perhaps out in their yard a few doors away or

across the street,I would just give a friendly wave and a smile.

That way they could just wave back,ignore me,or perhaps even

walk over and say hello.The ball was in their court.This worked

very well.We were overwhelmed with kindness and these folks

have grown to become very precious friends.

The best friendships grow slowly,like how concrete cures.Like layers of an onion,a friendship grows to a certain"layer".....some just the first layer of small talk,and a few grow to be deep,intimate friendships that are like gold.They are earned as we invest ourselves in them.The key is knowing what layer to be comfortable with regarding each friendship.

What I find interesting is that among our neighbours,many do not have blood relatives close.....so your neighbours become like family.It is wonderful.I'm a bit younger than many of our neighbours and I love helping them with things that to me are nothing,but to them it seems to mean a lot.Hanging a picture or changing a light bulb is a5minute job that they can't do.Hopefully if I do this now,when I get old someone will be there for me when I cannot do it.
