Task1 - Describe your least liked music. Please explain the reason.

Sample response:

Well, I believe all types of music are enjoyable, however, I would mention Hip Pop to be the lowest of my ranking. For me, a graceful piece of music should contain either the beautiful lyrics or the sounding rhythms. But the first time I listened to Hip Pop in a mini concert, I felt like being abandoned on a noisy island. I barely heard anything clear but dozens of words floating in the air. I could not concentrate on the lyrics to understand the songwriter’s thoughts, not to mention having any responsive chord deep in my heart. Though Hip Pop has kind of magic power to make everyone move, it is still hard to touch me in most of the cases.

Task2 - With the development of technology, some people believe students will study on the Internet in the future, while others believe that students should still study in buildings. Which do you agree with and why? Use details and examples to explain your opinion.

①The increasing access to the Internet enables students to study whe never and wherever they want. The benefits of convenience achieved can help encourage students to individually arrange their own studying schedules.

②As an advanced teaching method, the Internet can provide different studying reference, which helps students to learn the more cutting-edge and more precise knowledge. Students can hear from different opinions rather than the only voice of teachers in the classroom.

In buildings:

①The brick-and-mortar classroom gives a more involving atmosphere for students to study, especially for those who lack self-control. And there will be less distraction.

学校新闻说一年级学生宿舍分配不再是random而是根据学生的相同兴趣爱好来分配roommates。对话中女生认为没有必要，首先自己和室友是不同major的，但一样相处的很好。另外搬出宿舍很多时候不是因为没有common interest。

Task4

阅读讲的是商学中的compromising effects，指出当消费者面对众多选择时会选择价格和质量居中的产品。教授举例说到贩卖咖啡机，其中一款便宜，另一款是平均价格，结构便宜的那款很受欢饮。此时加入一款价位和质量更高的咖啡机一起出售，结果最受欢迎的就变成了均价的那款咖啡机。

I think it is most enjoyable to be with my friends. Because we don’t get to see each other so often now. Most of us go to different universities and study in different majors, so getting together on weekends to connect is really important for us. Mostly we spend half a day in a cafe or bar simply talking about our daily life. There’s always something interesting with each person’s study, dorm life or even love life. Sometimes we see movies, go shopping or play board games. And I’d really like to keep this meeting thing as a habit because there’s no other way to keep friends unless you’re wil ling to invest in time.

Task2 - Would you like to live in a modern building or a rather historical one?

Sample Response:

I prefer to live in a modern building. Because in many ways modern buildings mean convenience. First, the design of modern buildings makes the daily use of electricity, water at hand. There’s usually an elevator so I don’t need to clime stairs. Also, most modern buildings are located near bus stops or subways, if not there’s definitely a big parking lot. So it’s easy to go places. On the contrary, historical buildings may have lots of problems. Since it’s been used for decades or even hundreds or years, the fee for maintenance might be huge. Let alone the possible safety issues and inconvenience! I mean sure, a historical building may appeal to our mind and senses, but just not a perfect residence.

话题是Population cycle in ecology，教授介绍了捕食者wolf和猎物mice的数量此消彼长的三个阶段。第一阶段：当老鼠的数量大时，狼有足够的食物，从而老鼠数量减少，狼的数量增多。第二阶段：当老鼠少时，狼缺乏食物，则狼变少，之后老鼠又增多。接下来的第三阶段和第一阶段重复，则为循环。

男生的论文放在寝室里，但钥匙丢了，室友也不在，而论文马上要交。第一个方案是跟教授坦白，但是他以前也出现过类似情况，不想让教授觉得他是惯犯;第二个方案是找人来开锁，但是要花钱。

Task6

话题是电影保持悬念的方法。第一个方法是不让观众知道结局。比如说两个竞争关系的人要达到某种目的，一个场景中人物A在找东西，另一场景中人物B找到了某关键线索，观众就会好奇到底最后谁会成功?第二方法是观众已经知道了结果，但不知道过程。比如即使观众已经知道两个相爱的人走到了一起，但仍然会好奇他们是如何遇见及相爱的。

Task1–If you were asked to do community service, which of the following activities do you like to choose and why? ①Help children with their homework.②Teach adults how you use computer.③Clean the community park.

Sample Response:

Well, if I were to do some community service, I would definitely choose to help teaching kids. The main reason is that I am majored in education and I already have the experience of helping children with their homework when I worked in a training school last summer. And I got plenty of professional knowledge in teaching from teachers work there, such as how to manage the classroom or how to correct kids when they misbehave. Also, compared with teaching kids, I don’t think I’m competent to do the rest two activities since I find myself a little bit dumb in dealing with all digital devices including computer a nd I don’t really even know to use cleaning machines such as vacuum cleaner cuz I seldom do housework at home.

Task2 – Some people prefer a job dealing with different tasks, while others prefer a job dealing with tasks following the routine and predictable. Which do you prefer and why?

Sample Response:

Compared with the job dealing with the predictable tasks, I definitely prefer the one that requires me to deal with different tasks everyday. This is due to the fact that I am a person who is always willing to meet challenges in work and I believe

that only if you are capable to address unpredictable problems can you be different with the rest members in your work place. And I think it is necessary for young people including myself to develop the flexibility and innovation by coping with various tasks, whether you wish to be a successful leader a qualified group member. On the other hand, it’s would be so boring to do the tedious work everyday, I think it will kill me if I work like that. When the tasks a re following the routine, I’m sure it will be the time for me to change my job.

Reading: 学校决定设置一个art club, 但是不算学分students can still pursue their major degree,另外，能提供affordable museum tickets.

Listening: 男生同意，理由一，他在高中的时候非常喜欢艺术，但现在的专业是chemistry,所以这个art club能够give him chance to pursue interest without worrying about influencing his credit.理由二，museum ticket is expensive for students. It’s a good chance for them to enjoy the art that they cannot afford before.

Listening: The professor used to teach little kids, and sometimes teach them how to use pen to paint. A girl named Mary, painted on the desk and damaged some facilities, the professor punished her by not allowing her to go out play with other kids. But Mary still misbehaved next time, this time the professor punished her by not allowing her to use the pen, and it did work, Mary correct her wrong behavior this time.

Problem: The boy just moves to an apartment, and have some furniture left in the old apartment, he can’t rent a small track.

Solution 1: rent a big one, but it’s more expensive, he thinks it’s no t worthy.

Solution 2: borrow a car from his friends, but he should run for several times cuz the car is not big enough to contain all the furniture.

Task1 - Which of the following activities do you prefer the most on a Saturday afternoon: doing exercise, watching TV, or staying with your family?

Sample Response:

I prefer the last one, to stay with my family. Because I go to a boarding school, so weekends are the only time I get to see them and spend some quality time with them. Mostly we just stay at home. My mom would prepare for a big meal, my dad and I would watch some games or business news together. And every other weekend, we go visit our grandparents. It’s a 2-hour drive, a little tiring indeed. The things we do is simply talking and bonding with each other but I think it’s very important. It’s so easy today to neglect the ones that care about us most. The solution is quite obvious though, just go and spend some time with them whenever we can.

Task2 - Do you agree or disagree with the statement that young children should learn to draw or paint?

Sample Response:

I agree with the statement. I mean, there’s a reason why every elementary school in China has music and art class. Young children need such stimulus for their brain to develop. From these classes, children can learn about basic singing and drawing skills. Even for the ones who are not good at these classes, they can relax and enjoy the stories about some famous painters, musicians. I mean, these classes won’t become mandatory when they go to high school so there won’t be much pressure. And

for the ones who find themselves talented in such areas, they may develop their personal strong suit and even know better about what they are gonna learn as major when they go to college.

话题是Task Partitioning，昆虫会分工协作。教授给了关于leaf cutting ant的例子，它们会分成三组进行协作。第一组蚂蚁会爬树收集叶子，第二组会cut the leaves into pieces以便于运输，第三组会负责把叶子运回nest。这些蚂蚁就是这样能够独立高效地完成分内工作。

话题是railroad的发展对美国经济的影响。第一，有了铁路后货物运输便利了，商户不需要把贩卖范围局限在小地方，他们可以把商品运往别的城市甚至全世界。第二，工厂选址自由更大了。工厂需要使用蒸汽机，而蒸汽机需要能源(coal)，所以过去工厂都建造在煤矿区附近。但有了铁路后煤矿可以得到运输了，这样工厂有了选址自由，比如可以造在有廉价劳动力的地方。

Well, I would prefer to work with others in a group. First of all, I believe it is the fastest way to get your problem solved. When you are in a group, you can easily find someone to consult for the knowledge you are not absorbed yet, and vice versa. Although there is a possibility that all group members may face the same problem, then “two heads are better than one.” You can work together to find a solution. Secondly, people with different background knowledge can come up with various new ideas, which can help expand vision for every group member within. Through brainstorming, you can expect lots of unbelievable yet great answers.

Task2– Some people think wearing fashionable clothes is important, while others not. Which do you agree with and why? Use details and examples to explain your opinion.

Response tips:

Pros:

①Clothes can reflect one’s taste, and a recognized good taste can always make people, especially women happy or excited in everyday life.

②We should believe that a fashionable wearing is a social etiquette to some degree. And a fashionable appearance can make others feel respected.

Cons:

①One should not really care so much about appearance and focus on the inner part instead. And one can glitter with knowledge, capability, or morality rather than the way of dressing.

②Everyone has a very different taste upon dressing. Therefore, it is meaningless to put too much emphasis on such a subjective topic.

Task3

学校要求加强对戏剧表演专业学生的要求，要求他们到校外去看专业戏剧表演，同时学生每学期要多交35美金。对话中男生表示认同，首先只通过课本知识学习戏剧表演是不够的，看专业表演可以加强理解;其次35美金并不算多，属于合理的收费范畴。

Task4

阅读解释的是ecosystem resistance: an ability to restore to its original condition，而生态复原能力的关键在于物种的多样性。教授举例讲到ocean中coral reefs 的数量如何得以恢复。如果在一片海域有多种鱼类以一种algae为生，那么当其中任何一种鱼类死亡，其他鱼类仍可以捕食algae并控制其数量，使这一海域内的coral reefs的生态环境维持原貌。但如果这一海域只有一种鱼类以algae为生，那么当这种鱼类死亡时，algae 的数量就会猛增，从而影响coral reefs的生态环境，使其死亡或被取代。

女生碰到一个时间计划冲突的问题。她在宿舍等Internet installation的人来，但那人下午没来，把时间reschedule到了明天下午。但女生明天下午约了人出去看电影。男生提出两个方案，第一，让女生的室友等在宿舍，但室友第二天下午有一个test prep session 要参加。第二，让女生取消和朋友的聚会，但女生非常想去看那部电影。

Task6

讲到了关于古代应用astronomy原理应用于生活的两个方面。第一种应用是农业方面, 举例古埃及人看见某颗星星就知道夏天开始了，然后开始播种;第二种是用来navigation，举例Viking人在海上航海，利用星星导航，知道离南方或北方有多远。
