Frank Woolworth was born in Rodman, New York, in 1852. His family were very poor farmers, and there was never enough to eat. Frank decided he did not want to be farmer. He took a short business course, and went to work as a salesman in a large city.

Woolworth realized he had a natural skill for showing goods to attract people’s interest, bu t he soon learned something more important. One day his boss told him to sell some odds and ends (小商品) for as much as he could get. Frank put all these things on one table with a sign which said FIVE CENTS EACH. People fought and pushed to buy the things and the table was soon cleared.

Soon afterwards, Woolworth opened his own store, selling goods at five and ten cents. But he had another lesson to learn before he became successful. That is, if you want to make money by selling low-price goods, you have to buy them in large quantities directly form the factories. Once, for example, Woolworth went to Germany and placed an order for knives. The order was so large that the factory had to keep running 24 hours a day for a whole year. In this way, the price of the knives was cut down by half.

By 1919, Woolworth had over 1000 stores in the US and Canada, and opened his first store in London. He made many millions and his name became famous throughout the world. He always ran his business according to strict rules, of which the most important was: “ THE CUSTOMER IS ALWAYS RIGHT.”

In choosing a friend, one should be very careful. A good friend can help your study. You can have fun together and make each other happy. Sometimes you will meet fair weather friends. They will be with you as long as you have money or luck ,but when you are down, they will run away. How do I know when I have found a good friend? I look for certain qualities(品质)of character, especially understanding, honesty and reliability(可靠).

Above all else, I look for understanding in a friend. A good friend tries to understand how another person is feeling. He is not quick to judge. Instead, he tries to learn from others. He puts

himself in the other person’s place, and he tries to think of ways to be helpful. He is also a good listener.

At the same time, however, a good friend is honest. He does not look for faults (过错) in others, he noticed their good points. In short, a friend will try to understand me and accept me.

Another quality of a friend is reliability. I can always depend on(信赖)a good friend. If he tells me he will meet me somewhere at a certain time, I can be sure that he will be there. If I need a favor, he will do his best to help me. If I am in trouble, he will not run away from me.

There is a fourth quality that makes a friend special. A special friend is someone with whom we can have fun. We should enjoy our lives, and we would enjoy friendship. That is why I especially like friends who are fun to be with. A good friend likes the same things I like. We share experience(经验) and learn from each other. A good friend has a good sense of humor(幽默, too. He likes to laugh with me. That is how we share in the joy of being friends, and I know that he is looking for the same quality in me.

When I meet someone who is reliable, honest, and understanding, I know I have found a good friend!

Talking to Teachers—Teachers are just people.Behind that desk, is a living, breathing human being. And just like any human being, they will probably be friendly to people who talk nicely to them.Teachers also seem to get along better with children who take schoolwork seriously and are prepared for class. And, just like any other human being, teachers like to be appreciated. The next time your teacher helps you solve a math problem or figure out a science project, say thank you with a smile.

Talking to Parents—Parents can be very supportive if their children ask for help.If you think there’s something your parents can do to help you socialize more or feel more comfortable around people, then ask them.V ery often, parents want very much to help, but really don’t know what to do.Pick a quiet time of the day and ask to talk.Tell them how you feel.Maybe they had the same trouble when they were kids.

Talking to Stranger —This is always a tough one.How do you deal with a neighbor, the mail carrier, or someone walking down your street—situations that often seem to cause arguments between kids and parents. The answer to these questions will vary(变化) from kid to kid, from parent to parent because all cultures are different. Some folks live in small towns where a hello to

everyone is “what’s done”.Then there are kids who live in the city who may have been taught not to speak to anyone they don’t know.If you’re having trou ble with this and always feel awkward in these kinds of situations, you might want to talk to your parents or a teacher about it.Where do they think you should draw the line(线)? Will it matter if you don't take your breakfast? Recently a test was given in the United States. Those tested included people of different ages, from 12 to 83. During the experiment, these people were given all kinds of breakfasts, and sometimes they got no breakfast at all. Special tests were set up to see how well their bodies worked when they had eaten a certain kind of breakfast. The results show that if a person eats a proper breakfast, he or she will work with better effect than if he or she has no breakfast. This fact appears to be especially true if a person works with his brains. If a student eats fruit, eggs, bread and milk before going to school, he will learn more quickly and listen with more attention to class.

Opposite to what many people believe, if you don't eat breakfast, you will not lose weight. This is because people become so hungry at noon that they eat too much for lunch, and end up gaining weight instead of losing. You will probably lose more weight if you reduce your other meals.

48. During the test, those who were tested were given ________.

A. no breakfast at all

B. very rich breakfast

C. little food for breakfast

D. different breakfast or none

49. The results of the test show that ________.

A. breakfast has great effect on work and studies

B. breakfast has little to do with a person’s work

C. a person will work better if he has a simple breakfast

D. those working with brains should have much for breakfast

50. The passage mentions that if you don't eat breakfast, you will _________.

A. lose weight

B. not lose weight

C. be healthier

D. gain a lot of weight

How to get out of bad habits

Most of us have one or a few bad habits that we’d like to get out of. 51 I have a few suggestions that have helped me and people around me. Here are some tips that can help you finally get out of that bad habit.

52 If you tell people around you that you will stop smoking or start to exercise three times a week, then they will check up on you. And you will feel you have to keep your promise because it is let out into the world.

Avoid temptations (诱惑). 53 Places where you are likely to spend too much money. Things in your cupboard that will not help you to get healthier and you should not have at home at all. And people that drag (拉) you down and back into your old ways.

54 It may seem like a good idea to change your life all at once. In our daily life, stress and lack (缺乏) of energy usually lead to failure. Don’t try to be Superman or Wonder Woman. Take it easy and break one habit at a time.

55 You will probably not succeed the first time you do it. You fail and you make mistakes when you make changes and try new things. That’s just life and nothing to feel bad about. What you should do next is try again.

A. Tell your friends and family.

B. Know what usually gets you into bad habits.

C. See your future in your mind.

D. The reason why we need to make good habits.

E. But how do you do it?

F. Don’t break more than one habit at a time.

G. If at first you don’t succeed, please try again.
