Scientist predict that one of the world’s coldest countries could be covered by thick forests instead of frozen ice sheets by the end of the century, as climate change brings about the “greening of Greenland”.

Today only four types of trees grow on the island, limited to small areas in the south. More than three-quarters of Greenland is covered by ice.

But by the year 2100, “Greenland could become a lot greener,”says Professor Smith from Aarhus University Denmark. “Pine tree forests like those in Alaska and Canada will be able to spread over most of Greenland. And it will provide new opportunities for local people.”

The research published in the journal Biological Science shows that, with expected levels of warming, many of North American and European trees and bushes will be able to thrive in now ice-covered areas of central and northern Greenland. The speed of forest growth will increase as the planet warms and new trees could cover more than 400,000 square kilometers-an area almost the size of Sweden-by the end of the century.

The change is likely to alter Greenland’s environment greatly, lading to the loss of Arctic animals and plants.

On the other hand, there could be significant commercial benefits for farming and tourism. Humans could play an active role in the greening of Greenland by helping to spread new plant types, says Prof Smith.

“People love growing plants, whether for food or beauty; it’s human nature,”he says. “This could help plant life throughout Greenland more quickly. This certainly has positive aspects for local industry and the economy.”

However, Prof Smith warns that, besides all these benefits, there are also risks involved in introducing new plants and animals. “If it is not done carefully, the new life forms could spread in an uncontrolled way as no animals or competing plants have evolved to keep their spread in check.”31. Anger is not wrong. I know this statement seems shocking and challenges the widely popular “Positive Thinking” movement, which encourages us to “be full of positive energy”and “let go of our anger.” However, the truth is that anger is just an emotion, and emotions are neither right nor wrong. We doo not consciously choose them. We do, on the other hand, choose how we express our emotions and there are definitely right and wrong means of expression.

The reason we’re often urged to “keep a lid on” our anger is that few people ever learn proper and positive ways to express anger. Instead, we are taught that “anger is wrong” and “you should keep your anger inside”. But these messages don’t change the fact that, for most of us, anger exists.

Many popular “Positive Thinking”programmes assume that success comes from

“controlling our emotions” and that this can be done by simply repeating positive statements. Interestingly, these positive slogans often include a lot of negativity. “Only losers complain!

I am a winner!” is one popular saying. The belief that those who disagree with us are losers is actually quite negative and is often used as an excuse for rude language and personal attacks.

When it comes to dealing with negative situations in our daily lives, the ability to reasonably express anger of disagreement is an important skill. But we must use balanced and non-violent method to express our dissatisfaction. Frustration at unfair policies or treatment can certainly cause anger, but our anger can never be an excuse for abusing family members, damaging schools, attacking doctors or most seriously, engaging in terrorism.

Instead of pretending that anger doesn’t exist, we should start teaching appropriate means of dealing with anger. When we experience angry feelings in ourselves or others, what we should “let go of” is the silly idea that we can remove anger with just a few sweet words. Instead, we should find reasonable solutions to the cause of those angry feelings. We need to accept anger as a natural emotion but stop using it as an excuse for violent and destructive behavior. Anger isn’t wrong, but failure to deal with it appropriately is.

36. What is the writer’s opinion about the “Positive Thinking” movement?

A. It can help people control their negative feelings.

B. It does not offer useful solutions for dealing with anger.

C. Following such advice can improve people’s chances for success.

D. Most of the people who participate in such progammes are dishonest.

37. The underline expression “keep a lid on”in Paragraph 2 is closest I meaning to

_________

A. freely express

B. always forgive

C. hold inside

D. completely forget

38. According the writer, the best way to deal with anger is to _________.

A. understand the cause and problem and act appropriately

B. ignore the cause and hope that the anger will go away

C. respond to the cause with positive energy and words

D. let the anger out freely until you finally feel relaxed

39. What information would have been useful to add to the final paragraph?

A. The names of some good books that talk about anger issues.

B. The viewpoints of people who hold the opposite to the writer.

C. Different studies that provide some evidence supporting the writer’s beliefs.

D. Some examples of how to deal with anger in a positive and beneficial way.

40. The content of this passage is mostly based on________.

A. fact

B. opinion

C. theory

D. story

D

Your goal as a writer should be to create “common ground” with the reader. You want the reader to share your knowledge and your attitude towards that knowledge. Even if the reader eventually disagrees, you want them to be able, foe the moment, to see things as you see them. A good piece of writing closes the gap between you and the reader.

The first step in closing that gap is to judge the distance between the two of you. Sometimes, obvious differences, such as age or background, create distance, but the key differences for writers usually fall into three areas: the reader’s knowledge about the topic, their attitude toward it, and their personal or professional needs.

KNOWLEDGE This is usually the easiest difference to handle. What does your reader need to know? What do you hope to communicate? Does your reader have enough background knowledge to understand you? If not, what information must you provide?

ATTITUDES When we say a person has knowledge, we usually mean the kind of knowledge that can be easily written down or told to someone ease. However, much of what we “know” is held as an attitude or image-as a loose collection of associations. For instance, my image of lakes includes associations many people would have, such as swimming, water skiing, sailing and having fun. By contrast, one of my best friends has a very different collection of associations. To him a lake means sun, warm feelings, relaxation and happily sitting on the end of a dock. Our different images create different expectations for each of us as a reader .The more your readers’ images and attitudes to the topic differ from your own, the more you will have to make them see what you mean.

NEEDS When writers discover a large gap between their knowledge and attitudes and those of the reader, the writers usually try to change the reader in some way. Needs, however, are different. When you analyze reader’s needs, it is so that you, the writer, can adapt to him. The ability to adapt your knowledge to the needs of the reader is often critical to your success as a writer. Effective writers are not simply expressing what they know. Instead they are using their knowledge: they are reorganizing, maybe even rethinking their ideas to meet

the demands or the needs of their reader.

41. According to the first paragraph, in order to create ” common ground”, the writer

will attempt to get the readers to_________.

A. change their attitude towards a subject

B. increase their knowledge

C. see things from his point of view

D. agree with him

42. What does the writer consider the most important cause of distance between the

writer and reader?

A. Differences in knowledge, attitudes and needs.

B. Differences in age, background and experiences.

C. The physical space between the writer and reader.

D. The lack of communication between the writer and reader.

43. By using the example of the image of lakes, the writer wants to ________.

A. argue that different experiences add the diversity of one’s understanding

B. explain the importance of having a strong belief in the readers’ attitudes

C. show how reader’s image may lead to different attitudes and feelings

D. a effectively describe the image of a lake

44. The writer would most probably agree that ________.

A. effective writing required a large distance between the write and reader

B. effective writing usually starts by pointing out what the readers believe

C. successful writers please the readers by expressing what the readers believe

D. successful writers will change their way of writing to meet the readers’ needs

45. Which of the following is the best title for this passage?

A. Control your reader

B. Analyze your reader

C. Make writing easy

D. Write English essays

Think again. Leasing can end up being just as expensive as buying. Most people think about leasing because they believe it will cost them less money. They're right-it is cheaper, but only in the short term. For example, if you were to lease anew Subaru Forester, you might pay $300 per month for the car. If you were to buy the same car, you would pay about $400 per month. Over a three-year, you would save $3600-a big savings. But after your lease is over, you have to give the car back. Many people want to lease because they can drive a more expensive car than they might otherwise be able to afford. For example, if you spend $300 monthly on a car, you might be able to lease a new Ford Explorer. For the same price, you might have to buy a used Explorer, or buy a new but much less expensive model. A lease, therefore, allows you to drive the latest models of more expensive cars. However, whatever car you can afford to buy you get to keep it, and it will always have a resell or trade-in(以新旧换)value if you want to upgrade to a new car later. Furthermore, people who lease cars are often shocked by how much they must pay when the lease is over . Most leases limit you to a certain number of miles. If you go over that, you must pay for each mile. As a result, you may end up paying thousands of dollars in mileage(里程) fees. In addition, when you lease ,you have to

But scientists say the farms of the future could be built in tall buildings in some large cities. It may be difficult to believe, but in fact, the technology for growing crops in doors already exists. Farming in the city is already happening. Some vegetables are already grown in greenhouses. Even the scientists at the South Pole research station can enjoy fresh vegetables they grow in their own greenhouse. Experts say indoor farming solves many problems. First, traditional farming takes up a lot of land. Growing crops in tall buildings — called vertical farming(垂直农业)— can solve the problem. Also, fruits and vegetables grown indoors would not face serious threats from insects and weather. Though vertical farms don’t exist yet, experts have created a plan for recycling in such farms. The water from indoor fish ponds would be used to water crops. Gases from crop waste would be used to heat the building. Waste from chicken or pigs would be reused as a source of energy. But experts believe vertical farming is not going to be easy. They say it can be difficult to control climate conditions indoors. Besides, Plants differ in their weather and lighting needs. For example, some plants like warm, sunny weather, but other plants prefer cooler temperatures. That’s not to say these difficulties won’t be overcome —but it will take time. Most experts suggest it may take about 5 to 15 years before the first vertical farms could be created. word “farm” may m ake you think of the countryside. Music can also reduce stress, make depression more bearable and help you relax. All the benefits of music can only be got if the listener enjoys the music he is listening to. If the listener dislikes the music or finds it boring, it will have a negative effect on him instead of a positive one. Now let’s examine what most of us do when it comes to listening to music. We usually just listen to a play list and allow a program to randomly (任意地)select the songs we are going to listen to. This is where the problem lies. What if you liked the first song but found the second one boring? What if the third one was a motivating song while the fourth didn’t suit your emotions? What do you think the result will be? What you’ll have is an emotional mess! The first song will lift your mood a little. The second will make you a little bored. The third will motivate you and then the fourth will put you down. In the end you’ll end up feeling worse than before. I strongly recommend dividing your play list into different small lists. For example, a list for relaxation, a list for motivation and so on. Another very important thing you must do is to get rid of the old music that you are bored of. Besides, don’t listen to songs with negative words or messages. The music you listen to can delay your recovery from breakups(分手)by months and months! People who listen to romantic songs after breakups recover 10 times slower than those who don’t. So be careful with your play list if you want to recover faster. 1.Music is believed to have a comforting effect. A.True B. False C. Not Given 2.One can benefit from all kinds of music. A.True B.
