It is certainly true that today traffic in cities throughout the world has become a major problem. This is obvious from the number of vehicles on our roads and the amount of pollution they cause. Probably the traffic problem is due to individuals travelling for work, study or shopping purposes, and this is evident in the rush hours we experience every morning and evening.

It is also true that, these days, such daily commuting is not always necessary because people can do these things from home. We can see this in the options Information Technology gives us today. For instance, on-line work, distance learning and shopping facilities are all available via the Internet.

However, even if everyone had access to the technology and the opportunity to work from home, it is unrealistic to think that everyone would want to. Even though the technology for working, studying or shopping on-line makes this option a possibility, nevertheless it would mean people had less freedom of choice and less social contact in their lives. This would have a large impact on society as a whole.

So, in conclusion, I think that while this practice could reduce the traffic problems in our cities, it is most unlikely to be an acceptable solution. In terms of other solutions, perhaps we need to think more carefully about facilitating public transport and limiting private cars in our city centres. The development of public transport that is not road-based, such as sky trains or subways, would probably be a more acceptable alternative measure to reduce jams on our roads.

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic:

Today, the high sales of popular consumer goods reflect the power of advertising and not the real needs of the society in which they are sold.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Write at least 250 words.

Nowadays, it is common to see advertisements on television or on billboards in the streets. Some people think that advertising boosts the sales of goods and encourages people to buy things they do not necessarily need. This argument contains some truth. In my country, advertising companies often produce advertisements featuring popular actors or singers to induce people, especially youngsters, to acquire goods which their favourite actor or singer seems to endorse, whether they need the products or not.

On the one hand, on the television screen a product is always made to look attractive and of good quality. As a result, people often purchase such goods upon impulse. Furthermore, as the number of consumers of a particular product increases under the impact of a persistent advertising campaign, others may be drawn into the trend, creating a large market for products which do not satisfy the real needs of society.

On the other hand, there are various counterarguments to these objections: The decision to make a purchase is a matter of personal choice. Advertising may not be the main cause of consumption habits. Individuals have their own preferences, and if they have enough disposable income it is entirely up to them how they use it. Also, it is doubtful if anyone can have the authority to judge whether goods for sale are really needed by society or not. Finally, as there is always only a limited amount of disposable income for anyone, people try to manage their budgets as best as they can. Advertising can seldom persuade people to spend money that they need for more urgent things, or to spend money that they do not have (for instance, by buying in installments).

In conclusion, as buyers have their own strong opinions and views on what constitutes good quality and on what they need and do not need, it is better to leave them to make their own decisions. It is difficult to claim that everyone is swayed by advertising and always makes purchases impulsively. However, it is a good idea to put restraints on advertising aimed at children and inexperienced youngsters. Otherwise, they might be persuaded to buy goods that they do not need, or to spend money that they do not have!

The process by which bricks are manufactured for the building industry can be outlined in seven consecutive steps. First the raw material, clay, which was just below the surface of soil in certain clay-rich areas has to be dug up by a digger.

Then the lumps of clay are placed on a metal grid in order to break up the big chunks of clay into much smaller areas, which fall through the metal grid onto a roller, whose motion further segregates the bits of clay. Sand and water are added to make a homogenous mixture, which is then either formed in moulds or cut into brick-shaped pieces by means of a wire cutter.

Those fresh bricks are then kept in a drying oven for at least 24 and a maximum of 48 hours, several dozens if not hundreds of bricks at a time. The dried bricks are then transferred to a so-called kiln, another type of high temperature oven. First they are kept at a moderate temperature of 200 ℃-1300 ℃. This process is followed by cooling down the finished bricks for 48 to 72 hours in a cooling chamber.

Once the bricks have cooled down and have become hard, they get packaged and delivered to their final destination, be it a building site or storage.

如何解决垃圾问题

The roads are dotted with trash, the railways are littered with decaying garbage and our cities are disgraced by plastic bags。Lately, the worsening rubbish problem has aroused people’s wide concern。Some hold the belief that it is an overstatement to claim that people have formed a “throw away”society, and that they just discard the used items, which is necessary。Others, however, firmly contend that people do develop a habit of throwing things away。Personally,I firmly side with the latter。

It is no doubt that our cities are on the way towards becoming a huge landfill。To begin with, people are in the habit of littering。Nowadays, people tend to discard old items like outdated furniture and worn-out appliance, which are actually recoverable。Furthermore, due to the inadequate facilities of garbage collection, people throw away their refuse everywhere at will。In addition, rubbish is in rapid increase。In the first place the quickening tempo of modern lifestyle gives rise to people’s favor of disposable items for sake of convenience, which greatly adds the amount of rubbish。In the second place, the development of science and technology also contributes to it。It generates new product in a more frequent way, which makes the old ones cast aside as rubbish at a quicker pace。Consequently, our cities are decorated with trash。。

In view of the severity of the issue,we should adopt immediate measure to address it。First of all,the government should play a leading role。It ought to bring in strong anti-littering laws, backed by heavy penalties and effective enforcement,to tackle the littering behaviors。Also, officials should make good use of mass media to promote the public’s awareness of environmental protection, making sure that everyone will become a conscious environment protector。Additionally, scientists can develop efficient technologies to degrade and recycle the rubbish。Research findings reveal that 63% of the refuse nowadays are recycled。Finally,it is essential for schools to attach importance to environmental education,so that every child will become environmentally friendly and get rid of the littering habit。

In conclusion, people’s littering habit is turning our communities into a rubbish holder。It is high time that we took joint effort to solve the rubbish problem。Otherwise,we will live with rubbish in the future。

移居外国的人应不应该接受当地的文化

Nowadays, more and more people would like to move to other countries and settle down for better natural environment, and more educational opportunities。Whether these new settlers should accept new countries’values and lifestyles has become a public focus。Before presenting my own opinion,I think it is essential to analyze both sides of the issue。

People in favor of acceptance to new values claim that once you live in a new environment, you have to adapt yourself to the new community。If not,you would feel psychologically isolated。Moreover, getting yourself in the new environment, you can develop a better career, for your employer will consider you to be an adaptable person。And your family also can get themselves involved in the new

community。Last but not least,as you accept the new values and lifestyles, you can learn something new apart from your own culture。

Those who are against, however, argue that if the settlers accept new values and culture, they are considered to betray their own countries,so they no longer belong to their countries。Furthermore, new settlers are supposed to keep their own styles。For instance, their eating habits, religion believes, and so on。Last of all,it is a good way to preserve their tradition and culture, especially the ethnic, who are in minority of people。

Personally speaking,I tend to side with the former view。Though people should have their unique styles,it is crucial to adjust to the new environment and community。An old saying just illustrates my point:When in Rome,do as the Roman。

应否使用动物做实验

Nowadays, experimental usage of animal has become a widely concerned issue around the world。People hold diverse views towards it。

Adversaries claim that it is an extremely crude behavior。Animals, especially mammals, like dogs, cats, rabbits, rats, which are the major victims in the experimentation, are usually human’s pets。Pet owners are strongly against it for they firmly believe that animals suffer physically and mentally as we do。When equality is advocated in the modern world,it is inhuman to disrespect creatures that are not human beings。Furthermore,a number of experts pointed out that it would be at high stake of depending on the results of animal experiment; since they differ from us in many ways。Take the body structure for example,we can’t imagine humans try to jump from the height of nine stories without any protection because cats survive out of the same test。

Those in favor of the idea about usage of animal declare that using animal is an advisable choice。On one hand because their bodies are similar in function to ours。For instance, they catch colds, suffer from stomachs and heart diseases, which more importantly influenced by diet and habits。The consequences of the test may not be applied to humans, although they are highly connected to the human situations。On the other hand, those creatures yell and act abnormally when they feel uncomfortable, which is what exactly researchers expect。In addition, there is an easy-to-answer question:isn’t it crueler to test directly on people with little knowledge on the objects’effects? In a word, there is nothing better than animal that resemble human the best for experiment。

Personally,I am not a supporter of animal experiments, yet there is anything more suitable can replace them,I accept using animals for tests, but take good care of them when they are not in the laboratory。

雅思大作文范文三十篇

Topic 1: When international media (including movies, fashion shows, advertisements and other TV programs) convey the same messages to the global audience, people argue that the expansion of international media has negative impacts on cultural diversity. What is your opinion? 媒体信息一致的缺点: ?国际媒体(global media)—般掌握在少数几个有实力的机构手中(in the hands of a few, large, powerful organizations);有了媒体的宣传(propaganda)后,西方文化成了主流(domineering force),大规模的、有吸引力的广告(mass seductive advertising )唤起了落后地区人们对物质新的向往(create fresh desires),经济联系增强(strong economic ties),西方产品取代了本地产品,使人们更加向往西方的文化; ?文化开始融合在一起(mingle),人们被新的价值观所围绕(bombarded with new values),对自己的文化失去信心和自豪感(confidence and pride),拒绝接受自己的文化传统(rejection of their cultural heritage)转而接受西方的文化习惯(adoption of Western cultural practices);西方媒体削弱了民族的特征(ethnic identity)和社会的凝聚力(social cohesion);因为担心失去观众(a loss of viewers),当地的电视台也开始播放西方的电视节目(television shows), ?国际媒体的普遍会降低世界文化的品质和多样性(degrade the quality and diversity of world culture);文化被商业化(commercialized), —些文化产品(cultural goods),如音乐、服装,都变成了商品(commodities in the marketplace)。 未必一定放弃传统观念(not necessarily lead to the abolition of traditional values),事实上媒体可以起到宣传和稳固传统文化的作用; ?主流媒体一般都会反应文化多元性(The dominant media reflect cultural diversity.); —些外国节目其实促进了文化多元性(Most foreign programming is promoting cultural diversity.),适应了当地的条件(adapt to local conditions),注意到了当地文化的敏感性(aware of cultural sensitivity).自我调节来适应市场(exercise self-censorship to suit the market :)。 As international media companies expand across the world, the growing popularity and uniformity of some media programs (such as TV shows, movies, fashion shows) is causing worldwide concern. Many people have strong views toward this trend. In my opinion, international media is closely linked to cultural globalization and cultural homogeneity. The dominance of international media is a sign of Western cultural imperialism and has the potential to thwart cultural diversity. It is not a secret that international media is owned and operated by a handful of giant corporations, such as Time Warner. They control large sectors of the media market and place national media companies at risk. The contraction in the number of media owners will cause a proportional reduction, in the variety of programs broadcasted. For example, painting, music and movies accessible in the media have a small number of genres, imposing restraints on one's knowledge of artworks of different cultural backgrounds. In addition to seizing control over those creative industries, global entertainment companies affect cultural diversity by reshaping the perceptions, beliefs and norms of ordinary citizens in different countries. Most of the cultural values and ideals promoted by the leading mainstream media are of American origin. American culture values individuality, maximization of one's benefits and material wealth, rather than communal life and family solidarity, the values and norms previously treasured in" many Asian countries. Unfortunately, many Asian people now imitate American people, causing the alteration of their perceptions of family. This radical change can be attributed to those movies and TV programs that portray the success of American individuals or corporations.

# 43. You should spend about 20 minutes on this task. The table below shows CO2 emissions for different forms of transport in the European Union. The Pie Chart shows the percentage of European Union funds being spent on different forms of transport. You should write at least 150 words.

model answer: The chart shows CO2 emissions per passenger kilometre for variuos methods of transport in the European Union while the pie chart shows European Union spending on transport. Flying by air produces by far the greatest CO2 emissions, approximately three times as much as passenger cars which are the next largest producers. Very little is spent by the EU on air travel while roads make up more than half of the EU transport budget. Trains produce about three times less CO2 emissions per passenger kilometre than passenger cars and eight times less than air travel. Nearly a third of EU transport funds are spent on railways. Ships are a clean form of transport and produce about the same amount of CO2 per passenger kilometre as trains do. However, only 2 percent of EU funds are spent on ports. A further one percent is spent on inland waterways. Coaches are the cleanest form of transport. Emissions of CO2 per passenger kilometre from coaches are half those of buses. Buses emit less than half as much CO2 per passenger kilometre as cars. The European Union spends 10 percent of its transport budget on public transport, such as buses and coaches. (197 words)

Simon考官范文-雅思写作Task 2: problem/solution(问题与解决办法) essay

题目: In the developed world, average life expectancy is increasing. What problems will this cause for individuals and society? Suggest some measures that could be taken to reduce the impact of ageing populations. 范文: It is true that people in industrialised nations can expect to live longer than ever before. Although there will undoubtedly be some negative consequences of this trend, societies can take steps to mitigate these potential problems. As people live longer and the populations of developed countries grow older, several related problems can be anticipated. The main issue is that there will obviously be more people of retirement age who will be eligible to receive a pension. The proportion of younger, working adults will be smaller, and governments will therefore receive less money in taxes in relation to the size of the population. In other words, an ageing population will mean a greater tax burden for working adults. Further pressures will include a rise in the demand for healthcare, and the fact young adults will increasingly have to look after their elderly relatives. There are several actions that governments could take to solve the problems described above. Firstly, a simple solution would be to increase the retirement age for working adults, perhaps from 65 to 70. Nowadays, people of this age tend to be healthy enough to continue a productive working life. A second measure would be for governments to encourage immigration in order to increase the number of working adults who pay taxes. Finally, money from national budgets will need to be taken from other areas and spent on vital healthcare, accommodation and transport facilities for the rising numbers of older citizens. In conclusion, various measures can be taken to tackle the problems that are certain to arise as the populations of countries grow older. (265 words, band 9)

剑桥雅思3 T est2 task1 The chart shows that Britain, among the four European countries listed, has spent most heavily on the range of consumer goods included. In every case, British spending is considerably higher than that of other countries; only In the case of tennis racquets does another country, Italy, come close. In contrast, Germany Is generally the lowest spender. This is most evident in photographic film, where Germany spends much less than Britain. Germany only spends more than another country, France, in two cases: tennis racquets and perfumes. Meanwhile, France and Italy generally maintain middle positions, averaging approximately similar spending overall. Specifically, France spends more on CDs and photographic film but less on tennis racquets than Italy does. Italy's spending on personal stereos is only marginally greater than that of France, while spending on toys is equal between the two. It is clear from the data given that there are some significant differences in spending habits within Europe. TEST 2 T ASK 2 Overall, I disagree with the opinion expressed I would like to begin by pointing out that 'traditional skills and ways of life' are not automatically of one country, but of a culture or community. In many ways, the history of civilization is me history of technology: from the discovery of fire to the invention of the wheel to the development of the Internet, we have been moving on from previous ways of doing things. Some technologies, such as weapons of mass destruction, are of negative impact. Others, such as medical advances, positively help people to live better or longer, and so very much help traditional ways of life. Surely, few people would seek to preserve such traditions as living in caves Interestingly, technology can positively contribute to the keeping alive of traditional skills and ways of life. For example, the populations of some islands are too small to have normal schools. Rather than breaking up families by sending children to the mainland, education authorities have been able to use the Internet to deliver schooling online. In addition, the Internet, and modern refrigeration techniques, are being used to keep alive the traditional skills of producing salmon; it can now be ordered from, and delivered to, anywhere in the world. In conclusion, without suggesting that all technology is necessarily good, I think it is by no means pointless', in any way, to try to keep traditions alive with technology. We should not ignore technology, because it can be our friend and support our way of life. 1. Many people prefer to watch foreign ?lms rather than locally produced ?lms. Why could this be? Should governments give more ?nancial support to local ?lm industries? It is true that foreign ?lms are more popular in many countries than domestically produced ?lms. There could be several reasons why this is the case, and I believe that governments should promote local ?lm-making by subsidising the industry. There are various reasons why many people ?nd foreign ?lms more enjoyable than the ?lms produced in their own countries. Firstly, the established ?lm industries in certain countries have huge budgets for action, special effects and to shoot scenes in spectacular locations. Hollywood blockbusters like ‘Avatar’ or the James Bond ?lms are examples of such productions and the global appeal that they have. Another reason why these big-budget ?lms are so successful is that they often star the most famous actors and actresses, and they are made by the most accomplished producers and directors. The poor quality, low-budget ?lmmaking in many countries suffers in comparison. In my view, governments should support local ?lm industries ?nancially. In every country, there may be talented amateur ?lm-makers who just need to be given the opportunity to prove themselves. To compete with big-budget productions from overseas, these people need money to pay for ?lm crews, actors and a host of other costs related to producing high-quality ?lms. If governments did help with these costs, they would see an increase in employment in the ?lm industry, income from ?lm sales, and perhaps even a rise in tourist numbers. New Zealand, for example, has seen an increase in tourism related to the 'Lord of the Rings' ?lms, which were partly funded by government subsidies. In conclusion, I believe that increased ?nancial support could help to raise the quality of locally made ?lms and allow them to compete with the foreign productions that currently dominate the market.
