三、阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

A

This is not an ordinary summer camp. Michelle Pawlaw is glad that she signed up for it. “Getting to experience fire-fighting is really cool and something that most people don’t get to do,” says Michelle. Michelle and eight other teenage girls took part in the three-day camp offered by the Arlington County Fire Department located just outside of Washington. Firefighter Clare Burley was in charge of the program. “The purpose of the camp is to try to get young women interested in considering the fire service as a job,” she says.

The free-of-charge, overnight camp was designed to let the girls experience what firefighters do to protect the city. They took classes and learned how to climb the ladder on a fire truck, operate emergency tools and rescue an injured person. They also did their share of cleaning the firehouse and the equipment.

Firefighting is still a male-dominated (男性主导的) service, but Burley says with 32 women in its force of 320, the Arlington Fire Department is above the national average of 4.5 percent. Clare Burley joined the department seven years ago. “Women are generally weaker than men physically, but we do everything that the guys do to the same standard (标准). We are tested to the same standard. We a re expected to operate to the same standard,” she says.

Most of the girls say they never thought about becoming a firefighter, but the camp was a great learning experience. By spending three days together, they also made new friends and had a lot of fun.

36. What do we know about the firefighting camp?

Trees also suffer from stress, just as people do. Sounds unbelievable, isn’t it? So, how do you

know if your tree is stressed? Trees actually speak quite loudly when they are stressed; you just need to learn how to listen.

If your tree is wilting (枯萎), it probably needs water or you might be watering it too much. Unfortunately, under- or over-watering shows the same signs. However, a little research work will have the problem solved in no time. Giving your tree proper water is a good idea. If you have a drip irrigation system (滴灌系统), make sure it is working properly. If your tree is not quite right, with spots on the leaves or other unusual discolorations, look over your tree carefully. These are signs of insects, disease or nutrient problems. Look on the undersides of the leaves, as these are where they like to hide in.

You should have the right species for your climate and soils. Nutrient problems will appear if your soil is not right for the tree. If the climate is not suitable, a tree is stressed from too much or too little water and it sends out signals to insects, which take advantage of its weaknesses. Insects weaken the tree even more, and then diseases take hold.

Trees will show signs of stress, such as dropping bark (树皮) or leaves when their roots are disturbed. At this time, do not decide the tree needs fertilizer. Feeding a sick tree with too much fertilizer will just make it sicker. Sometimes you love your plants to death. Too much fertilizer may make your tree grow faster, but fast growth upsets a tree’s tender balance. The faster a tree grows, the less energy it has for defense against insects and disease.

41. Dropping bark or leaves probably shows that .

B. the root of the tree is negatively affected

C. the tree has been badly attacked by insects

D. the tree is in great need of various nutrients

42. What may happen if you give a tree too much fertilizer?

A. It will soon be killed by the fertilizer.

C. It will lose its ability to keep standing in the wind.

D. Its growth and development will completely stop.

New York teenager Timothy Doner has an unusual hobby. He likes to learn languages. The 17-year-old has mastered 23 languages now. While this has earned him the title of the world’s youngest polyglot, he is still not satisfied.

Timothy’s quest (追求) to learn languages began in 2009 after completing basic Hebrew (希伯来语) lessons in preparation for his Bar Mitzvah ceremony. He enjoyed it so much that he decided to become fluent in modern Hebrew. Longing for more, he then picked up Arabic. Within four days, he managed to master the alphabet and the ability to read the language fluently. After that, he couldn’t stop himself from learning more languages.

Over the years, he has added Russian, Farsi, Hausa, Italian, Persian, Swahili, Indonesian, Hindi, Pashto, Turkish, Kurdish, Yiddish, Dutch, Croatian, Spanish and German to his languages. The list does not include the ones that he has taken up at school in the past several years, which include French, Mandarin, Latin, and of course English. The most amazing part is that he has managed to learn all the additional languages on his own, using just online apps and grammar books.

The teenager begins by learning how to pronounce the alphabet correctly and then teaching himself the correct grammar. He then strengthens this by reading newspapers and talking with people who speak that language, either in person or on Internet chat rooms. In order to attract other people with similar skills and interest, he has even started posting videos of himself speaking different languages on YouTube. He is now in constant contact with 31-year-old Ohio resident Moses McMormick, who has mastered 50 languages.

Timothy’s next goal is to conquer Sudanic and Malay. He says that his language skills come in quite handy when he is on subway, walking around New York City or even while at a restaurant.

A. is considered well-rounded

B. can speak various languages

D. never gets satisfied with his life

44. What do we know about Timothy Doner?

A. showed no gift for language learning when he was at school

Active listening is the art of listening to another person’s feelings and then reflecting them back. Active listening does not require that you agree with your children’s feelings, but it allows your children to feel connected and understood and provides them with an opportunity to explore those mysterious impulses (冲动) known as emotions.

Four-year-old Chrissy ran through the front door, slamming (砰地关上) it so forcefully that the pictures fell off the wall. “I hate Tammy!” she cried. Then Chrissy threw herself onto the sofa in a storm of sobs (抽泣).

Her mom, Diane, looked up from the bills she was going to pay. Resisting the impulse to scold (责骂) Chrissy for slamming the door, she asked quietly, “What’s the matter with you, Chrissy?”

Chrissy said sadly, “Tammy took my ball! Tammy is bigger than me. It isn’t fair for her to take away my ball.”

“It must be pretty upsetting to be picked on by a big girl,” Diane said. “Yeah. I’m mad,” the little girl said firmly, “I don’t want to play with her anymore.”

She sat quietly for a moment, watching as Diane put stamps on envelopes. After a while, Chrissy said, “Mom, can I go to play out in the backyard?” Diane gave her daughter a hug. Chrissy left, seeming to forget her anger.

By simply reflecting back her daughter’s underlying feelings, Di ane allowed Chrissy the opportunity to explore what was going on for her, and in the process, Chrissy discovered a solution to her own problem. Some other time, Diane might be able to talk with Chrissy about avoiding future problems—and perhaps tell her what she could do to express her anger instead of slamming the door.

Like most adults, sometimes what children really need is for someone to listen and understand. Active listening opens the door for real connection, problem-solving and works towards building a lifelong relationship of love and trust.

47. This text is intended for .

A. teachers

B. parents

C. children

D. students

48. How did Chrissy feel when she entered the room?

C. Very angry.

49. What do we know about Tammy?

A. She is older than Chrissy.

B. She is younger than Chrissy.

C. She is weaker than Chrissy.

D. She is larger than Chrissy.

50. What was Diane probably going to do before then?

A. She was going to post a letter.

B. She was going to scold Chrissy.

C. She was going to slam the door.

D. She was going to talk with Tammy.

Positive thinking is the belief that good things will happen and that one’s ha rd work will be rewarded with success. When you ask for positive and good things to happen in your life, you are thinking positively. Positive thinking is based on hope and belief that hard work is never wasted.

Positive thinking leads a man to succeed. One who thinks that he can succeed will put his best to work, and won’t be fettered (束缚) by the problems in the path of success and one day he’ll win. Positive thinking aids a person in finding a way in a difficult task or a difficult situation. He starts feeling that something can be done to get over the difficulties. Those who think positively always keep hope alive, which gives them a chance to succeed.

Positive thinking is like exercises to develop the muscles (肌肉). The more you do it, the better you’ll be at it. It’s not possible to think positively all the time, but you want the majority of your thoughts to show good and happy things. Some things that can help you be positive are: skills of dealing with problems, building up encouragement, changing your thoughts by developing good habits, surrounding yourself with positive people and being confident.

To train yourself to think positively in any situation, you can design some positive thoughts that you wish for in life. For example, if you want success in life, then a positive thought for success could be “I’m going to be successful because I’m working hard for it.” You can speak it up, write it down, or repeat it at least a couple of times throughout the day, and your life will have a change for the better.

Edwarda O’Bara was a 17-year-old high school student in 1970 when she became sick from her diabetes(糖尿病)medication and slipped into a diabetic coma. Just before she lost consciousness, Edwarda asked her mother, Kaye O’Bara, to never leave her side, and her family never d id. Edwarda’s father, Joe O’Bara, and Kaye took care of their daughter—reading to her, playing her music, making sure she was turned every two hours, bathed, given insulin(胰岛素)and given nourishment through a feeding tube—until their deaths in 1976 and 2008, respectively. After that, Edwarda’s sister Colleen O’Bara took over. Her family’s unending care for her became a story told across the world. And visitors from across the world traveled to the Miami Gardens home every year, sometimes appearing at the doorstep on random days, other times for Edwarda’s yearly birthday party, a cheerful affair with decorations, balloons and cake. Through it all, Edwarda remained in a coma. But to her family and followers she remained alive.
