第三部分阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)

Being a single mother, doing a few jobs and trying to finish my schooling leaves me very little time for a social life. So when I had a date with a guy I had met, I was very excited! I kissed my daughter goodbye and set out in my car. After a while, the thought to get gas crossed my mind, but I ignored it, as I wanted to be on time.

I was driving down the freeway when I realized there was no way I would make it and I should pull off at the next exit to get gas. But the next exit was miles away. When the car stopped in the lane at last, I became horrified! I was all dressed up in a skirt and high heels, and the traffic was terribly blocked! I looked in my rear-view mirror and saw a big SUV behind me.

The doors opened and 4 teenage girls who were about 16 years old came out. They came up to my window and asked if they could help. I gratefully accepted their help.

I put the car in neutral (空挡) and they pushed it all the way to the gas station! It was not an easy task! I offered to pay them, but they just smiled and went into their car and headed on their way.

I g ot my gas and went back on my way. I was quite late, but the story helped me have a great conversation with my date. Having been given an act of kindness, I was in a wonderful mood.

It just goes to show that the youth are more than just the stories you often hear on the radio. Our world is filled with sweet souls. They just usually don’t make the headlines.

Puppy Love is not your typical pet store! There are several reasons why Puppy Love is a unique place. Firstly, it is not part of a chain. Puppy Love is a privately owned store with the owners always in. Secondly, we only sell puppies! By focusing only on puppies rather than fish, birds or other animals, we are puppy experts! We have a huge selection of puppies. Our adult staff will guide you toward the right puppies for your lifestyle and family. Our employees are not paid on commission (佣金), so their goal is a perfect match for every customer and every puppy. Our customers benefit because we focus on one thing and we do it very well. Our puppies and our service are excellent.

Another unique feature of our store is that our puppies are in large open cages in a very large room where they are easy to be seen. We also have “puppy playrooms” where puppies can be held and played with. Our puppies are better socialized with other dogs and with people than puppies that are kept isolated in small cages behind a glass wall.

As a patriotic (爱国的) student in Ang Lee’s Golden Lion-winning Lust?熏Caution ?穴SeJie?雪, Leehom Wang plots to kill a traitor to save his country. And in his latest album ChangeMe ?穴GaibianZiji?雪, the R&B idol faces up to the threat of climate change.

“In the past, I cared about whether I could lead a music trend,” said the 31-year-old Wang. “But now I just want to do something meaningful for my listeners.”

In ChangeMe, he calls on everyone to help to protect the earth by making small changes in their behavior. And that’s what he’s doing in his daily life too.

“I ride a bicycle to press conferences and I refuse to buy over-packaged products,” he said. The cover of his new album is made from recycled paper. Inside, he gives advice on protecting the environment, for example, by using energy-saving light bulbs. To get more people involved, Wang is organizing an online charity auction (拍卖) to sell off outfits from his concerts. He will use the money to plant trees.

Some critics believe the album won’t sell well because of the serious message behind it, but Wang said that he regarded the album as a “venture”. He also thought hard about it before making it.

“This topic doesn’t belong to mainstream pop music,” he said. “My company was unwilling to let me change my direction, but I insisted.”

However, this “green” album still has some elements that will help to sell well. The song LongLivetheChinese (HuarenWansui) was written in honor of the Olympic champions like Liu Xiang and Guo Jingjing, who made an ad with Leehom Wang. He wrote another song FallingLeaves (LuoyeGuigen) under the pen name Kuang Yuming, the name of his character in Lust, Caution.

Lake Superior, the world’s largest freshwater lake, has been shrinking for years — and now it appears to be getting hotter.

Residents near the lake, which is bounded by Wisconsin, Michigan, Minnesota, and Ontario in Canada, must walk 300 feet farther to reach the shorelines now. Some wharfs are unusable because of low water, and some lake edges now grow lots of tall wetland plants. The remaining lake water is also heating up at dramatic rates. Researchers are starting to think that the shrinking and heating are related and both are caused by rising global temperatures and an on-going local drought (旱灾).

From the late 1960s to 1999, there was a 30-year period with water levels above average, said Scott Thieme, chief of the Great Lakes Hydraulics and Hydrology Office for the US Army Corps of Engineers in Detroit, Michigan. But in 1999, the water levels started to fall below average and have mostly stayed that way.

“Lake Superior is in its largest stretch of below average water levels since we recorded water levels,” Thieme said. Scientists predict that by this fall, the lake will set a new record low —about an inch below the old one. Falling lake levels have seemed dramatic to lake residents because they’ve spent most of their lives alongside Lake Superior, he added. Some locals suspect water is being secretly moved from the lake to places such as the thirsty West. And as the climate over the Great Lakes region warms, Lake Superior is heating up at nearly twice of the climatic pace.

69. According to the researchers, Lake Superior is becoming lower and hotter because _______.

A. the water in the lake has been used too much

B. there are too many wetland plants in the lake

C. global temperatures keep on increasing

D. too many forests have been destroyed in the area

70. Why do the residents near the lake have to cover a longer distance to reach the shorelines?
