Introduction

0.1Survey of Wayson Choy

Wayson Choy’s literary achievements are influenced by his cultural being as a Chinese Canadian writer.Born on April20,1939in Vancouver’s Chinatown,growing up between Chinese and Canadian culture,Wayson Choy describes the immigrant experience in his works.Choy,the first Chinese Canadian,attends the University of British Columbia to study creative writing under the guidance of Earle Birneyin the late 1950s.He begins instructing English in1967at Toronto’s Humber College where he is a faculty member of the Humber School of Writers as well.Meanwhile,he serves as a volunteer for various literacy projects.For the third successive year,Choy is elected President of Cahoots Theatre Company in Toronto.Although he experiences some success with his preliminary short stories,Choy does not continue writing in earnest until1977when he enrolls in one Creative Writing program again.In2000,Michael Glassbourg produces a documentary film about Choy’s life,entitled“Wayson Choy: Unfolding the Butterfly”on release at the Savanna Film Festival in Georgia,America. Among1,200entries from as remote as Iran and Argentina,it is the single Canadian films out of the30finalists for screenings.Furthermore,Choy himself travels to China to preside Searching for Confucius(2005),a film exploring the life of this ancient Chinese sage.Choy is accredited to a member of the Order of Canada,Canada’s elevated civilian honor,for his contribution to writing in2005.He is also the recipient of the2008Harbourfront Festival Prize conferred annually to a writer who has fostered the subsequent generation of literary talent.1

Wayson Choy is described as“an accomplished pioneer giving voice and opening a nation’s consciousness not just to the history of Chinese Canadians but to the complexity of survival and cultural identity in a multilingual,multigenerational and
