The Texas-based survey uses a mathematics formula to track the frequency of words and phrases in the English-speaking world of more than 1.58 billion people.

It declared that Apple’s new ipad was one of the top names of the year on a list that also featured “Chilean Coal Miners”, reflecting the worldwide fascination with televised rescue last October of 33 men trapped deep in a mine.

In politics, Tea Party-the U.S. grass-roots political movement-made both the 2010 top phrases and top names list, while “ Man up!”-a signature retort from U.S.political women to their male opponents, made its first entry.

There’re many reasons for this——typically, men take more risks than women and are more likely to drink and smoke——but perhaps more importantly, men don’t go to the doctor.

“Men aren’t seeing doctors as often as they should,” says Dr. Gullotta. “This is particularly so for the over-40s, when diseases tend to strike.

Gullotta says a healthy man should visit the doctor every year or two. For those over 45, it should be at least once a year.

“When I finally saw him it had already spread and he has since died from lung cancer,” he says,“Earlier detection and treatment may not have cured him, but it would have prolonged his life.”

According to a recent survey, 95% of women aged between 15 and early 40s see a doctor once a year, compared to 70% of men in the same age group.

“A lot of men think they can never be defeated,” Gullotta says. “They only come in when a friend drops dead on the golf course and they think, “Geez, if it could happen to him…”

Then there’s the ostrich approach. “Some men are scared of what might be there and would rather not know,” says Dr. Ross Cartmill.

“Most men get their cars serviced more regularly than they service their bodies,” Cartmill says. He believes most diseases that commonly affect men could be addressed by preventive check-ups.

Regular check-ups for men would inevitably place strain on the public purse, Cartmill says. “But prevention is cheaper in the long run than having to treat the diseases. Besides, the ultimate cost is far greater, it’s called premature death.”

37. Why does the author congratulate his male readers at the beginning of the passage?

A) They are more likely to survive serious diseases today.

B) Their average life span has been considerably extended.

C) They have lived long enough to read this article.

D) They are sure to enjoy a longer and happier life.

38. Which of the author’s statement is the most important reason men die five years earlier on average than women according to the passage?

A) Men drink and smoke much more than women.

B) Men don’t seek medical care as often as women.

C) Men aren’t as cautious as women in face of danger.

D) Men are more likely to suffer from fatal diseases.

39. Which of the following best completes the sentence “Geez, if it could happen to him…”?

A) it could happen to me, too. B) I should consider myself lucky.

C) I should avoid playing golf. D) it would be a big misfortune.

40. What does Dr. Ross Cartmill mean by “the ostrich approach” ?

A) A casual attitude towards one’s health conditions.

B) A new therapy for certain psychological problems.

C) Refusal to get medical treatment for fear of the pain involved.

D) Unwillingness to find out about one’s disease because of fear.

41. What does Cartmill say about regular check-ups for men?

A) They may increase public expenses.

B) They will save money in the long run.

C) They may cause psychological strains on men.

D) They will enable men to live as long as women.

As Anna McKane of the London Observer said, "They moved heaven and earth to build the Channel Tunnel. But they also had to move a forest."

It seems that an ancient forest, called Biggins Wood, stood in the way of the tunnel entrance between England and France. (Because the tunnel goes under the English Channel, people call it the Chunnel. It is one of the greatest engineering feats (业绩) of the twentieth century.)

Six years before the building of the Channel Tunnel, students from Wye College collected thousands of acorns (橡果) from the woods. They planted these oak tree seeds and produced 2,000 healthy little oak trees. The students also collected the small plants of Biggins Wood to plant along with the acorns. They wanted the seedlings to grow as they had in the first Biggins Wood. Because the soil itself was important, they removed tons of it from Biggins Wood. This soil was spread over one hectare (2.5 acres). It became the baby-tree field.

The environmental manager of the Eurotunnel Project (the tunnel's proper name) also manages the Chunnel Wood project. Katharine Kershaw, the manager, planned a typical British landscape. She wanted it to look just like the rest of the peaceful English countryside. She says that about 220,000 trees and plants are now growing around the tunnel entrance, the railroad, and the side roads. The great oak trees of the area may be gone, but not for long. In a few years the new growth and the natural growth will merge, joining to make a new Biggins Wood. People leaving the tunnel will see a beautiful, natural England.

42. We can infer from the passage that Anna McKane is _____. A. a student from Wye College

B. a reporter for a British newspape

C. the manager of the Eurotunnel Project

D. an environmental expert in Biggins Woods 43. Which statement about the Chunnel is not correct?

A. It is the name of the tunnel under the English Channel.

B. It is a tunnel that links England and Germany.

C. It is one of the greatest engineering feats of the twentieth century.

D. The proper name of this tunnel is the Eurotunnel.

44. One reason to save the oak trees was tradition. In other words, _____.A. the oak trees had always been in Biggins Wood

B. the oak trees are the symbol of England

C. people loved the oak trees

D. scientists wanted to save the acorns

45. What is the environmental manager’s attitude towards the Chunnel Wood Project?

A. Upset.

B. Pessimistic.

C. Satisfied.

D. Confident.

Dear editor,

I’m writing to tell you something about how we students use the Internet. As we all know, the Internet is playing a important part in our daily life. We often read news at home and abroad and learning foreign languages by ourselves on the Internet. Sometimes we sent e-mails to our families as well as our friends. Beside, we listen music, enjoy films and play computer games on it. We can even do shopping without leaving our homes.

However, it has its disadvantages. We waste too much time playing the electronic games, that has a bad effect on our studies. What’s worse, the bad information on the Internet do great harm to them. I hope we can make the use of the Internet proper for our studies.

Yours truly
