Ten years ago, many people thought that the age of the physical

books (纸质书) was coming to an end. The objects that had been the

companions (伙伴) of millions of 16 for hundreds of years

were going to die out. Soon, we'd all be reading on little electronic

screens and laughing at the memory of places called “17 ”and

“bookshops”. yj·c·n·2·1·But it seems not true about the idea of the death of the physical books. At least in the UK, as The Guardian noted, sales of e-books

are falling while sales of physical books are 18 . More surprisingly, it's young people who

are buying the most physical books. More than 60 percent of 16-to-24-year-olds 19 print

books to e-books. There are many reasons and the most popular one is: “I would like to

Books become very personal objects to reading lovers. It often starts 21 they get the books. Many buyers of books like to write down their names on the inside cover when they've bought one. The “friendship”24 people develop with books isn't just about feelings. Research has shown that readers remember more information from reading physical books than electronic ones.

However, there's no 25 that e-books are here to stay. They aren't simply a “here

today, gone tomorrow”thing. But it's also certain that physical books, which have been in production since the fifteenth century, are here to stay, too.

Do you find it hard to learn math and history? A recent study carried out by scientists from University of London, may be of help to you. They found that teenagers could get higher marks

in math if they studied in the morning and better grades in history if they were taught in the afternoon.

The researchers did a study at a secondary school in Bulgaria over nine years. The results

showed that when teenagers had math classes earlier in the day, they scored on average (平均) 7 percent higher in tests than when taught in the afternoon. Lower-ability students did worst when they were studying math in the afternoon.

In history, students taught in the afternoon scored on average 6 percent higher than when

they were taught in the morning. However, it doesn't work for other subjects such as languages

or geography. 教育】21【版权所有:Velichka Dimitrova, leader of the study, said the findings show that we do better at

different times of the day.

“In the morning, our brains are better and fresher, so we are better at doing something that repeats a lot like problem solving, where we require more speed and attention,”Dimitrova told The Telegraph.

“In the afternoon, it seems that this process (过程) slows down. On the other hand, history

is better suitable for the afternoon, when we are more creative and open to discussion,”she said. Subjects such as foreign languages require both memory and repetition (重复), and they

also need people to be creative. This is perhaps why the time of day has no influence on learning.

Time-of-day effects such as those are believed to be connected to the body clock. This is

the system in our bodies that controls when we need to sleep. Some schools in the US and UK

have tried out later school starting times for teenagers, whose body clocks change as they grow

into adults.

Dimitrova believes schools should take this chance to improve students' performance just

by changing their timetables.

I'm not the kind of mother who normally brushes and styles her daughter's hair, and my

daughter has never liked sitting quietly long enough for me to do it.

But today, I put a chair outside and let my daughter Sally sit on it. She was sitting high with

her eyes closed, skin still wet from the shower, and her messy hair behind her back.

I realized she was taking in every touch from my hands. It was the last time for a week that

our bodies would connect. Today, I would send Sally away for a week of summer camp. She

didn't ask to go. This was all my idea. She's nearly 12, and I notice that I'm with my child

nearly 24 hours a day.

Living on a farm without any neighbors, I've chosen a life that is quieter than a usual

family's. But instead of requiring space away from me, Sally has increasingly depended on me. What worries me most is that she has become a “mini-me”. She follows my hobbies, my dreams, and my opinions. And that was why I pulled her to the summer camp, a nearby

wilderness (荒野) camp called Hawk Circle.

After we ate, I drove Sally to Hawk Circle. Once there, we got a tour of the grounds and

were introduced to other campers. Sally stood by the group of children, holding my hand, horror

in her eyes, trying to work up the courage to join a game of soccer. “I need you for a few more minutes,”she told me, holding my hand tightly (紧紧地).

I pulled away and walked up to one of the camp's workers. “Excuse me,”I said loudly, “I'd like to introduce you to my daughter. Maybe you could help her meet a few of these kids.”He

The tears (泪水) came down my face. It took every bit of my strength to keep driving forward. When I arrived home, I calmed down and reminded myself why I chose this path. I thought

to myself, “I want Sally to have a chance to find herself, out of my shadow. I don't want to see

only myself in my child. I want to learn who she is. If I don't set her free, I fear I'll never really

meet her real personality.”

After 12 years of being together, I want to finally meet my daughter for the first time.

A) 阅读下面短文,根据所读内容,在文章后第56—65小题的空格里填入一个最恰当的单词,并将答案填写在答题卡标号为56—65的相应位置上。

注意:每个空格只填一个单词。....We've probably all met someone who likes to show off about where he or she has been. To

some people, traveling is all about how many places one has been to. But luckily, the old “been there, seen that”mode is changing.

Last year's travel trend (趋势) was “experiential travel”. This is where tourists look for

ways to get to know local culture and meet local people so they feel less like an outsider.

So what about this year? Can creative tourists get even more out of their traveling

experience?

Transformative travel

Transformative (起改变作用的) travel is much like “experiential travel”, but takes it a step further.

It usually goes through three steps –you go to a place that has a very different background

and

meet, you people the and culture new the from wisdom learn you live, you where from

finally you go back home and use the knowledge in your own lives. This last step is how the “transformation”is completed and what separates transformative travel from experiential travel. Go green

One way to plan a green trip is to travel a shorter distance, which can reduce your carbon

footprint (碳排放量). “One trans-Atlantic flight equals a year's worth of driving, so taking a trip

in this way can help protect the environment,”suggested Warren, according to US News.

Another way to go green in your travel plans is to choose a place that will be helped most

from your trip. For example, places like Nepal will enjoy an increase in its local economy (经济) through the trip.

Disappearing sights

Some sights at risk of disappearing are also welcoming an increasing number of tourists.

Everett Potter, a USA Today writer, says that the Arctic and Antarctic have attracted (吸引)

more and more tourists since they are being greatly influenced by climate (气候) change.

Another top sight is the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. It's believed that the reef will be

seriously harmed in just a few years because of pollution and global warming. Travelers look forward to seeing the coral (珊瑚) “before it's gone or completely changed”, Potter told US
