TEXT A

On Tuesday, May 22, 1980, a man named Henry Hill did what seemed to him the only sensible thing to do: he decided to cease to exist. He was in the Nassau County jail, facing a life sentence in a massive narcotics conspiracy. The federal prosecutors were asking him about his role in the $6 million Lufthansa German Airlines robbery, the largest successful cash robbery in American history. The New York City police were in line behind the feds to ask him about the ten murders that followed the Lufthansa heist. The Justice Department wanted to talk to him about his conn ection with a murder that also involved Michele Sindona, the convicted Italian financie匚The Organized Crime Strike Force wanted to know about the Boston College basketball players he had bribed in a point-shaving scheme? Treasury agents were looking for the crates of automatic weapons and Claymore mines

he had stolen from a Connecticut armory. The Brooklyn district attorney^ office wanted information about a body they had found in a refrigeration truck, which was frozen so stiff it needed two days to thaw before the medical examicould perform an autopsy.

When Henry Hill had been arrested only three weeks earlier, it hadn't been big news? There were no front-page stories in the newspapers and no segments on the evening news? His arrest was just another of dozens of the slightly exaggerated multimillion-dollar drug busts that police make annually in their search for paragraphs of praise? But the arrest of Henry Hill was a prize beyond measure? Hill had grown up in the mob? He was only a mechanic, but he knew everything? He knew how it worked? He knew who oiled the machinery. He knew, literally, where the bodies were buried. If he talked, the police knew that Henry Hill could give them the key to dozens of indictments and convictions. And even if he didn^t talk, Henry Hill knew that his own friends would kill him just as they had killed nearly everyone who had been involved in the Lufthansa robbery. In jail Henry heard the news: his own protector, Paul Vario, the seventy-year-old mob chief in whose house Henry had been raised from childhood, was through with him; and James “Jimmy the Genf" Bruke, Henry's closest friend, his con fidant and partner, the man he had bee n schemi ng and hustling with since he was thirteen years old, was planning to murder him.

Under the circumstances, Henry made his decision: he became part of the Justice Department^ Federal Witness Protection Program? His wife, Karen, and their children, Judy, fifteen, and Ruth, twelve, ceased to exist along with him. They were given new identities. It should be said that it was slightly easier for Henry Hill to cease to exist than it might have been for the average citizen, since the actual evidence of Hill\ existence was extraordinarily slim? His home was apparently owned by his mother-in-law. His car was registered in his wife's name? His Social Security cards and driver's licenses一he had several of each —were forged and made out to fictitious names? He had never voted and never paid taxes. He had never even flown on an airplane using a ticket made out in his own name? In fact one of the only pieces of documentary evidence that proved without doubt that Henry Hill had lived一besides his birth certificate一was his yellow sheet, the police record of arrests he had begun as a teenage apprentice to the mob.

11.Which of the following, if any, were interested in Henry Hill?

A? The Drug Enforcement Agency.

B.The Anti-terrorism Arm of the United States.

C? The Department of the Treasury

D.All of the above.

12.According to the passage, Henry HilTs arrest was described by police as _______ .

A? slightly exaggerated

B big news

C? just another drug bust

D.a "prize beyond measure^

13.The Lufthansa crime _____ ?

A? was the only successful hijacking in American history

B.was the crime for which Hill was first arrested

C? was the biggest successful robbery in the U.S.

D.was masterminded by James "Jimmy the Gent^ Bruke

14.It was so easy for Hill to “disappear" beciiuse ______ ?

A.his mother-in-law bought his house?

B.there was liMle legal evidenee of his existenee

C? his family came with him

D.he had many underworld contacts

15.What's the implied message of the passage?

A.Hill played both sides for his own benefit.

B.Crime does not pay.

C? Crime pays until you get busted?

D. Hill is a unique and interesting figure?

TEXTB

More than three years after moving from Australia to this remote part of England, we are still learning how things are done here.

Not too long after we arrived and un packed, we were invited for “a drink on Sun day mor ning" by a retired couple nearby ? We got there about no on, to find the living-room crowded 一lots of chat and discussions, and in all a very jolly occasion.

Trouble was, there was no food一no self-respecting Australian would regard a tray of crisps as food. In Sydney, when you are invited for a drink any time after midday on a Sunday, you know you will be fed as well as watered and you plan accordingly. Meaning the hardworked liMle woman makes no plans to cook lunch because you are eating out.

By one-fifteen my stomach was sending up "please explain^ to me. Even the crisps had gone. There was nothing we could do except wait, and wonder 讦the hostess was going to perform some magic and feed us fashionably late? Then,as quickly as if word had spread that there was free beer at the local pub, the room emptied. By one-forty-five there were only a few guests left, so we decided to go home. Tinned soup for lunch that day because the little woman was not really interested in real cooking for us.

A few weeks ago we were invited out for "supper^ and the hostess suggest 8」5? Ah, we thought greedily, "this is going to be the real thing."

We dressed with some care 一I put on a dark suit 一and arrived on time. My wife looked pretty good, I thought 一a little black dress and so on. But when we walked in I had a terrible feeling we had got the night wrong because the hostess was dressed in a daytime kind of way and the husband was in jeans and an open-neck shirt. But no, we were greeted and shown into the sitting-room.

After a drink I looked around and saw that this was indeed a superior cottage because it had a (more or less) separate dining-room? But there were no signs of a table-setting? Not again! I thought. Were we meant to eat before we came? I decided that in future my wife and I would always carry a chocolate bar. About 9.30 our hostess went out of the room, saying something about food. Ten minutes later she returned and asked us to follow. We were led out to the kitchen. There on the table were country-style plates and a huge bowl of soup, rough bread and all the makings of a simple meal. And that is what 让was. In other words, we had not read the signals right when we were invited for "supper9; If they want you to come to dinner, they say so, and you know that means dark suits and so on. If they mean supper, they say it, and you get fed in the kitchen.

If they make such a distinction between "dinner,5 and "supper': does this mean we were not worth making an all out effort for? Candles, best silver and all the rest?

It is eno ugh to give a person a prejudice ? Whe n you think about it, it9s pretty depressi ng. They must use the dining-room sometimes, because they had all those high-backed chairs and candle-holders.

16.When the author and his wife were invited out for “a drink on Sunday morning", they though t ________ .

A.they would be the only people there

A.the hostess decided to feed her guests

B.every one had tinned soup for lunch

C? inost of the guests went to lunch at the pub

A.expected to be served a proper dinner

B.arrived on the wrong evening

C.interpreted the invitation correctly this time

19.As the evening wore on, the writer became aware that _______ ?

A.no one used their dining-rooms in the countryside

TEXTC

In a breath-taking turn of events, Asia's economies have gone from miracle to meltdown in a matter of weeks? Many forecasters who recently predicted GDP growth of 6% in South Korea and southern Asia for 1998 are suddenly projecting zero or even negative growth. In the often short-sighted world of intern ational finance, a new conv entio nal wisdom is quickly forming: that in ept policy-making is dragging down Asia economies, and that only tough austerity medicine of the Internationnl Monetary Fund, plus a good stiff recession, will bring the region's economies back to track?

In recent years, foreign and domestic investors in East Asia got a touch of what U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan has famously termed "irrational exuberance?" Spurred by years of high economic growth in Asia, these investors poured billions of dollars of loans into the region, financing many worthwhile investments but also an unsustainable real estate boom.

This over-investment need not have caused a crisis. A healthy reaction would have involved a gradual cutback in foreign lending, a gradual weakening of Asia's overvalued currencies and gradual shift of investments from over-inflated property sectors back to Iong-term export-oriented projects. Most short-term booms are brought down to earth without extreme crisis, and such an adjustment was the most likely scenario until the summer in 1997?

In the eve nt, Asia experienced a financial meltdown ?A gradual withdrawal of funds from Thailand suddenly became a stampede? Thailand's government delayed in responding to the overheating long after it had become apparent, and as a result spent much Thailancfs foreign exchange reserves in a misguided attempt to defend the overvalued baht(泰铢).The stampede came when foreign creditors realized that Thailand had more short-term foreign debts than the remaining short-term foreign reserves. A 'rationaF panic began. Each investor started to dump assets simply to get out of Thailand ahead of other investors. Panic in Thailand soon took a toll on the economics of its neighbors? The chain reaction of nervous withdrawals led to a meltdown that now includes most of East Asia.

Confidence has been so drained that Asia's positive "fundamental95一historically high rates of growth, savings and exports—are being overlooked. Economics rely on confidence, and what they most need to fear is, indeed, fear itself.

21.The word “meltdowrT in the first sentence of paragraph 1 is analogy to________ ?

A.the radioactive core of a nuclear power

B.a con trolled nu clear reaction

C? nuclear energy slips out of control and ends up in a full-blown disaster

D. the breakdown of the cooling system

22.According to the author, in normal case, over-investment _______ ?

A.can be reduced by a quick slash in foreign lending

B.does not necessarily lead to a critical stage

C? may be solved by abrupt devaluation of currencies

D. should be shifted to boom-town real estate speculations

23.The response of the Thai government was anything but ______ .

A.improper and in decisive

B.wise and timely

C? hesitant and dallying

D. stumbling and staggering

https://www.360docs.net/doc/ba11242668.html,'s fundamentals are positive EXCEPT ______ .

A.high savings rate

B.high exporting rate

C.high inflation rate

D.high growth rate

25.According to the passage, what is supposed to be the key link to the economic recovery in East Asia?

A.To attract more foreign fund.

B.To boost the exports?

C.To stop dumping assets?

D.To regain confidence?

TEXTD

Sophisticated Internet users have banded together over the last two days to publish and widely distribute a secret code used by the technology and movie industries to prevent piracy of high-definition movies.

The broader distribution of the code may not pose a serious threat to the studios, because it requires some technical expertise and specialized software to use it to defeat the copy protection on Blu-ray and HD DVD discs. But its relentless spread has already become a less on in mob power on the Internet and the futility of censorship in the digital world.

An online uproar came in response to a series of cease-and-desist letters from lawyers for a group of companies that use the copy protection system, demanding that the code be removed from several Web sites.

Rather than wiping out the code 一a string of 32 digits and letters in a specialized counting system 一the legal notices sparked its proliferation on Web sites, in chat rooms, inside cleverly doctored digital photographs and on user-submitted news sites like https://www.360docs.net/doc/ba11242668.html,.

"It's a perfect example of how a lawyer's involvement can turn a little story into a huge story/5 said Fred von Lohmann5a staff lawyer at the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a digital rights group. “Now that they started sending threatening letters, the In ternet has turned the nu mber into the latest celebrity. It is now guaranteed eternal fame:

The number is being enshrined in some creative ways. Keith Burgon, a 24-year-old musician in Goldens

Bridge, N.Y., grabbed his acoustic guitar on Tuesday and improvised a melody while soulfully singing the code?He posted the song to YouTube, where it was played more than 45,000 times.

“I thought it was a source of comedy that they were trying so futilely to quell the spread of this rm mber,^ Mr. Burg on said. “The ir onic thing is, because they tried to quiet it down it's the most famous number on the Internet;

Duri ng his work break on Tuesday, James Bertels on, an engin eer in Vancouver, Wash. , joined the movement and created a Web page featuring nothing but the number, obscured in an encrypted format that only insiders could appreciate? He then submitted his page to Digg, a news site where users vote on what is important. Despite its sparse offerings, his submission received nearly 5,000 votes and was propelled onto Digg's main page.

"For most people this is about freedom of speech, and an industry that thinks that just because it has high-priced lawyers it has the final say," Mr. Bertels on said.

Messages left for those lawyers and the trade organization they represent, the Advaneed Access Content System Licensing Administrator, which controls the encryption system known as A.A.C.S?、were not answered. In an e-mail message, a representative for the group said only that it “is looking into the matter and has no further comment at this time/'

The organization is backed by technology companies like I.B.M. , Intel, Microsoft and Sony and movie studios like Disney and Warner Brothers, which is owned by Time Warner.

The secret code actually stopped being a secret in February, when a hacker ferreted it out of his movie-playing software and posted it on a Web bulletin board? From there it spread through the network of technology news sites and blogs.

Last month, lawyers for the trade group began sen ding out cease-and-desist letters, claiming that Web pages carrying the code violated its intellectual property rights under the 1998 Digital Millennium Copyright Act. One letter was sent to Google, which runs a blog network at https://www.360docs.net/doc/ba11242668.html,?

The campaign to remove the number from circulation went largely unnoticed until news of the letters hit Digg. The 25-employee company in San Francisco, acting on the advice of its lawyers, removed posting submissions about the secret number from its database earlier this week, then explained the move to its readers on Tuesday after noon.

The removals were soon by many Digg users as a capitulation to corporate interests and an assault on free speech. Some also said that the trade group that promotes the HD DVD format, which uses A.A.C.S. protection, had advertised on a weekly Digg-related video podcast.

On Tuesday after noon and into the eve ning, stories about or including the code swamped Diggs main page, which the company says gets 16 million reader each month. At 9 p.m?West Coast time, the company surrendered to mob sen time nt.

“You'd rather see Digg go down fighting than bow down to a bigger company,^ wrote Kevin Rose, Digg's founder, in a blog post. "We hear you, and effective immediately we won" delete stories or com me nts containing the code and will deal with whatever the consequences might be." If Digg loses, he wrote, "at least we died trying/'

Jay Adels on, Digg,s chief executive, said in an interview that the site was disregarding the advice of its lawyers?"We just decided that it is more important to stand by our users/5he said. Regarding the company's exposure to lawsuits he said, “We are just going to prepare and do our best."

26- The secret code that the technology and movie industries use to prevent piracy of high-definition movies became a most celebrated nu mber immediately on the in ternet ______________ ?

PART IV PROOREADING & CORRECTION [15MIN]

Proofread the ^iven passage on ANSWER SHEET TWO as instructed.

PART V TRANSLATION [60 MIN]

Please translate the following into Chinese on ANSWER SHEET THREE.

Sometimes I have thought it would be an excellent rule to live each day as if we should die tomorrow. Such an attitude would emphasize sharply the values of life..?? In stories the doomed hero is usually saved at the last minute by some stroke of fortune, but almost always his sense of values is changed? He becomes more appreciative of the meaning of life and its permanent spiritual values? It has often been noted that those who live, or have lived, in the shadow of death bring mellow sweetness to everything they do.

Most of us, however, take life for granted. We know that one day we must die, but usually we picture that day as far in the future. When we are in health, death is all but unimaginable? We seldom think of it. The days stretch out in an endless vista. So we go about our petty tasks, hardly aware of our listless attitude toward life.

The same indifference, I am afrtiid, characterizes the use of all our faculties and senses?Only the deaf appreciate hearing, only the blind realize the manifold blessings that lie in sight. Particularly does this observation apply to those who have lost sight and hearing in adult life. But those who have never suffered impairment of sight or hearing seldom make the fullest use of these blessed faculties? Their eyes and ears take in all sights and sounds hazily, without concentration and with little appreciation. It is the same old story of not being grateful for what we have until we lose it, of not being conscious of health until we are ill.

I have often thought it would be a blessing if each human being were stricken blind and deaf for a few days at some time during his early adult life. Darkness would make him more appreciative of sight; silenee would teach him the joys of sound.
